    This week's show: 49ers fans are head over heels for Jimmy Garoppolo - and for good reason. He's athletic, intelligent, and a great leader both on and off the field. As far as franchise quarterbacks go, he looks about as close to "the real deal" as it gets after just four starts for San Francisco. However, despite all of Garoppolo's early success, he still has some major issues to work through before he can truly take this team to the next level. We'll explore all of those issues and more on this week's Film Room.

      This is on the internet and he can easily look this video up or someone will show it to him or someone has already told him to work on it and he, of course, will work on it. When he becomes even more accurate (he has already thrown some unbelievable throws that made me "Wow! How did he find that hole?") then he will be even scarier.

      The fact that he has weaknesses means he can improve to be a better QB than he was now. Coupled with the fact that the Niners will certainly target more FAs and not spend a top pick on a QB means the sky's the limit for the offense.

      IMO he's too good for ESPN or really any major network. I dropped cable years ago, but I never remember any ESPN show/video ever going remotely close to this kind of detail. While I'm sure some of the people at ESPN have the same amount of knowledge Brett has, I get the strong sense they are forced to keep everything super simple. I personally hate that approach yet understand why they do it and think that it would severely limit Brett's ability to make great content. So hopefully this channel keeps growing and Brett can make the same salary an ESPN employee would while having full control over his content. As that would be a win-win for everyone.

      @FirstOfTheMagi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yea i'm sure a lot of his positive traits were learned in the few years behind Brady in NE, and those things aren't taught overnight so they probably didn't end up getting around to his footwork before they traded him because his skillset would've been fine to win games in their system had Brady gotten hurt. I hope for the sake of good football that he improves and NE trading him is more of their belief in Brady rather than a lack of faith in Jimmy G.

    • @aj1359
      @aj1359 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Josh Bass it was purely a belief in Brady, that's why they held on to him so long. Literally the first time I've seen or heard Belicheck express any kind of emotion was when they traded Jimmy G, they held onto him for the longest time they could. If Jimmy G would have told them he'd resign for a million a year, they would have definitely kept him, but Jimmy expressed his intent on testing the FA market, and they simply can't afford Brady and Garopolo, so they had to move him, they couldn't get nothing from the work they put in him. They believed in Garoppolo, it mainly became a dollar and cents issue

    Funny how a good QB solves a team’s problems. Makes me wonder about the good teams of the past who got deep into the playoffs or won the whole thing with mediocre QB play, such as the 2000 Ravens, the 2006 Bears, or the 2015 Broncos.

    I'm sure the Pats worked with Jimmy on this. One thing I will say, I hope Jimmy does not change his short and mid-range game due to trying to adjust for the longer throws. No other QB (maybe only a couple) could have taken the 49ers, this far. And yes, have to agree it's the quick release that is bailing out the 49ers.

    • @EliteTeamKiller2.0
      @EliteTeamKiller2.0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really do not want him to "fix" this "flaw." I just want him to be more aware of it so he will be able to choose when not to do it. It actually HELPS him on the short/intermediate stuff, because it allows him to get the ball out faster and at awkward angles to beat the rush. It does hurt him on the deep game, though. This is why I want him to master the ability to choose when to break the rules, so to speak. In a clean pocket on a deep pass, I want him to transfer his weight correctly. On a short pass where his arm is enough to get the ball there, by all means, keep doing what works.

  • @BigThizzle75

    Just like he said, the NFL is a better product when the 49ers are relevant. And with a projected $116 million in cap space plus draft picks, Jimmy G and the Niners have a very promising future.

      I sure hope not, at least not how Brett is talking. This "mechanical flaw" helps him get the ball out faster. It HURTS him on deep passes, yes. But it HELPS him on short and shorter ranged intermediate passes in the face of the rush.

      Excuses excuses. He's a good qb but he has bad footwork. Don't make excuses for yourself or your players and coaches and team just because your a fan. Brady isn't Brady by making excuses. He needs to fix his footwork and his flaws and he'll be Brady. I couldn't agree more than with the video. He's getting the ball out incredibly fast but missing on long shots and accuracy by poor footwork. He has good decision making and awesome coaches. I expect they'll clean this up within the next year and perfect it in the next two or three and you'll be watching a younger Brady kicking my hawks ass left and right if we don't fix our own shit storm. Good luck!!

But I've watched great qbs go from good qbs into great ones by changing their arm rotation, improving their release, improving their strength and conditioning and their footwork and hip rotation. Your probably one of those idiots that can't understand I'm actually impressed and looking forward to watching the 49ers get even better because that's what good people and real fans do. They realize football is better for it because rivalries improve, players and coaches increase in skill and intelligence and scheme, and honestly I don't like bad teams reaching the playoffs when they play like garbage or didn't deserve it. I guess you just wanna hate. While I'm over here rooting for this dude to become the next Brady and Rogers. So suck it ya 49whiner

      Realistically Seahawks are in rebuild mode while rams should take #1 and 49ers could take #2 with a good 8-10 wins depending upon their progression and Seahawks and cardinals regression. Unfortunately there's only one bellicheck that can plug and play and reach and win in the playoffs year in year out.

    His flaws remind me of Bradford. Of course, when healthy, Bradford is quite decent, however the lack of hip rotation limits his downfield velocity and accuracy. Hopefully Jimmy G can fix that as it would really limit his upside.

      these mechanics are interesting....in martial arts for a nice solid hit when you deliver a rear hand punch you want the foot and knee slightly closed when delivering the punch because the energy weight transfers from the back leg to the front then moves up and across the body to the extremities ....do baseball pitchers turn out their front foot I don't think i've seen that really...i guess the slight pivot to open the foot to the target must be specific to football.

  • @toohawg

    Tom Brady's former QB tutor the late great Tom Martinez of San Mateo college, coached to lock the front foot inward as Garappolo does. This was to prevent the hips and upper body from over rotating and having the ball pulled to the side. He was adamant about staying in the sagittal plane, making sure your mechanics operated in a straight line so you would never miss left and right. I was fortunate enough to attend his last QB camp before cancer took him from us 7 years ago.
    I have no idea if this coaching point exists in New England with Brady still, but I was surprised when you referred to it as a flaw.
    Great video! Thanks!

    Can some one correct me if I'm wrong~~~ I feel like *if a QB cannot throw the ball finishing with the snap of the wrist, they will not have much success in the NFL.*
    I say this bcuz Ive watched *Dak Prescott* since he came in to the league and his throwing motion is so painful to look at.
    For one, Dak uses his shoulder far too much than needed. For two, he cannot gently but quickly lob the ball to nearby players with just a flick of the wrist.
    This is why i feel that *he's having such accuracy problems.* His mechanics is so messed up that not many ppl are actually *taking notice*
    With *jimmy G* on the other hand, he throws the ball so effortlessly. You can see how easily he flicks the ball off his hand....and the throws are very accurate!
    Its crazy how even a big guy like *Big Ben* can flick the ball off but not Dak.
    I hope someone agrees with me
    *P.S.* to my fellow *Bears🐻* fans....Our GM, Ryan Pace *needs to hire an offensive minded coach to help Trubisky get better* ~~From McVay to Kyle Shanahan, they have shown us how rookie QBs can have success in the NFL. This is whats needed for Trubisky. 💯

    • @wolf2109
      @wolf2109 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ty Reek well maybe bcuz he doesnt trust in his throwing ability. He knows he has to wind up to throw the ball, hes unable to flick the ball off like Rodger,Wilson,Ben,Brees,Ryan.
      He literally has to use his whole body thmo throw a somewhat fast ball. I hate this and i feel like this is the reason for his problems.

    • @wolf2109
      @wolf2109 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's rather asinine to compare a veteran to a guy that's still on his Rookie contract. Dak is, by no means, dumb. He's not great, and he knows it, so he's gonna put in work because he knows that he has to. Being without Zeke showed that much. He'll look much better for the 2018 season.

    • @bunghole47

      but do we have a good offensive if we do find another GOOD QB? if we find another QB that's as good as jimmy Garoppolo or baker Mayfield then my cowboys are going to be ELITE. cowboys defense are the second best under Baltimore and if we draft that QB then we might just get a few more rings like we did back in the 90's.

    What a storehouse of dissective skills you have, Bret!! Bravo!!! I love JG and what I've learnt from your video makes me even more convinced that JG is the Franchise QB for the 49ers. And, I do believe that Kyle will work with JG as they go through the films and work on fixing his flaws. Thus far, he never had the opportunity to start in multiple games and now those game speed limitations can be unearthed, as he continues to start, and worked on. All in all, an excellent trade for the 49ers

I will say though that one aspect that was overlooked is that of pocket presence; the ability to move as little as necessary, as late as possible, while keeping his eyes downfield that is perhaps the most important skill a quarterback can have. And Jimmy has got it. Bigtime.

    • @donaldd4136
      @donaldd4136 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Micah Harkins It’s not even about the o line. It’s that he sees pressure coming and he stares it down, knowing he will get lit up, and gets rid of the ball at the very last second and then takes a big hit on purpose. This habit will lead to serious injury.

    • @EliteTeamKiller2.0
      @EliteTeamKiller2.0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think some of the flaws you mentioned come as a product of being behind a terrible offensive line and being rushed. Look him up in college and he was better on the things you mentioned. It should be improved once he gets more comfortable and confident in the guys blocking upfront for him and isn't pressured to get the ball out so quick. Tbh this analysis gets me more excited because it shows it isn't a lack of arm strength but a lack of mechanics and proper footwork. He's making these throws with all arm strength imagine when he gets his lower body involved.

      Razeo that’s actually what I’m talking about. He didn’t completely follow through, especially in his lower body. But I’m not totally counting that against him. With a LB that close, completely shifting your weight to the front leg can result in devastating injury if you get hit low.

      He'll no. He's pretty solid at staying with the throw. He's taken some pretty big hits. I watched every game he played this year, and one, you should want your QB to shy away from those type of hits but two, I've watched him hang in there, get nailed and still hit his WR

    • @hagamapama
      @hagamapama 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He's been on the bench for most of his NFL career. That can lead to an odd situation where some aspects of his game are highly refined and others are neglected, depending on what the coaches focus on. Clearly the NEP coaches focused on quick release and good situational play. Just as clearly, there's some other areas he could get better at.
