Give credit to John Harbaugh and his staff. They had to completely rewrite and rework the way this offense works in the middle of the season, and they did it to perfection. They aren't forcing Lamar to do things he's not good at, but instead use his strengths, which is his great speed and maneuverability, and unlike the guy a lot of people like to compare him to, RG3, Lamar hasn't really taken a bad hit so far, the worst one he's had was a freak accident when Ronnie Stanley's foot hit him in the head. He's been very good at just getting what he can get and avoiding the big hits
So, is this sustainable? Of course not, there's no QB alive that could run the ball around 15+ times a game and not get hurt. It will last this season, and hopefully into the playoffs than in the offseason they will focus entirely on getting Lamar's throwing down, and next year he'll come out and average about 10-15 rushes a game.

  • @georgefeldman5647
    @georgefeldman5647 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

One problem. Your strategy requires the outside linebacker to flatten or "fill." Only problem with that is if they run play action and the linebacker misreads the play, he will be completely out of position.

    • @sorenpotthoff3705

The problem is that people forget that this offense has been around for a long time. It's evolved but it was the same offense that got Kaep to the Superbowl. Greg Roman was the same OC. This isn't a fad. Jackson is just an insanely better QB to run it which allows them to do even more with it. But the offense works in college and the pros if you have the right athletes and coordinators.

As much as I love the option, whether that's my personal split-back veer from my highschool, or just a regular zone read, it's super gimmicky and you can't win every single game off of it unless you're the bigger and more physical team.

It's hilarious to read these comments by these Ravens fans now that they've lost in the playoffs, ironically to the same team they're so proud to have beaten 2 weeks ago. Brett couldn't have been more correct; not only was the Ravens' scheme shut down, it was shut down by safeties playing as linebackers, which shows how the run game wasn't based on physical dominance, just like Brett pointed out.

Obviously I have the benefit of some hindsight, but Lamar's dramatic improvement as a passer this season, while not dominating the Ravens' potent offensive game, leads me to believe that he will continue to improve as a passer and run less often. I think he will probably always be a quarterback who can run, but I really think he's got a work ethic and drive second-to-none... dude just wants to do whatever he has to to win. And I do think it's in his best interest, not for scheming or any of those other reasons, but just for longevity, that he transitions at least a bit more to passing more than running.
He's also really smart. So as long as he learns early on that he's not impervious and needs to make sure he protects himself, I imagine his running will improve as well. I see a lot of Russel Wilson in him, a quarterback who can both run and throw, but has always been much smarter than guys like Kaepernick and RGIII when it comes to running. I may be wrong about this, but he seems to be taking a lot fewer hard hits this season than he did last year, and yet he's about doubled his yards per run.
His intelligence has really blown my mind, the dude has improved in so many ways since last year and a lot of it is understanding the game. I don't even understand the game that well, but I can tell he does.

He was also right in his reads, the chargers put down a better clamp on the run than the teams before them did, then Lamar went ahead and showed something other teams hadnt seen yet, that he can throw the ball 10-20 times with some success if he needs to. That forced the chargers to respect the pass a little more, so the run game could open back up. That dime to andrews for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter was the difference maker, along with that terrifying defense shutting down the 9th ranked offense to 10 points and 190 yards TOTAL offense.
This ravens team is scary, and if lamar can keep on the development pace he's had so far, we can go deep, especially since only 2 of the other 5 teams in the afc playoff picture have good defenses, one of them we just beat.
I don't fault brett for this video, I had a lot of the same concerns he did, lamar just showed us what we needed to see.

A lot of this is over simplified. And I don’t think the expiration date on this offense is as close as you think. Your defensive answer for stopping this offense is close but not quite. It’s true, the unblocked player is crucial. But his options are not limited to just spilling it outside to the backer. In a zone read game, you’ll see dozens of different plays blocked a dozen different ways and it’s impossible to script every scenario for the end and linebacker to react perfectly every time. It just doesn’t happen. In that clip you showed of the chiefs defenders spilling and filling, a simple fan block or base block on the defensive end would have sent the runningback up the pipe in the B gap because the backer over anticipated that play hittin the edge. Both the end and backer would have been sitting outside on a play that was never going there. Gap exchanging, even in the NFL is a very hard thing to do. Seattle’s defense left an 8 man loaded box on the field vs the niners to ensure that they always had a hanging edge defender with 6 players to bang around the inside zone. In fact single high defenses became popular at this time because it forced defenders and defensive coaches to exchange their chess pieces for boxing gloves. Can’t out think em? Load the box lock everybody up and just drop our nuts on their doorstep. But I digress....In a 60 min game, the zone read is not a scheme that hits like a heavy weight boxer. It’s designed so that the coordinator becomes the ultimate counter puncher. Wanna take away the dive? Alright we’ll arc block around the end with the H back (49ers/Nevada) Trynna take away the QB pullin it? Ok now the box has numbers and the backs untouched for big chunks(Lamichael James/Kenjon Barner) Wanna bring in a big space eater to help with the interior so more people can chase down the perimeter runs? Ok instead of doubling his fat ass let’s just not block him and make him wrong every Time (Stephen paea civil war 2009). It’s exactly what happened to the bengals in your own video. First clip was a great example of spilling n filling. Or gap exchange. But in between those two runs you showed, the ravens mixed in some true inside zones and it forced the backers to play solo gaps across the front. Then when they came back to the zone read, the backer was mixed up between fillin his Gap for inside zone or gap exchanging with the end for the zone read. A perfect answer, would have been to simply say, the unblocked player can dictate to the offense what they will do and leave it at that. Because encouraging these coaches to tell these ends to continue to always crash on the back is ludicrous! Then you put Lamar Jackson 1 on 1 with a linebacker in space to the edge. A mixture of sitting and spilling (pre snap communicated between both players) is a better plan. The unblocked player will pre determine who we as a defense want to carry the ball. Once we’ve decided that then it’s party on the ball carrier. Ps asking a corner to have a responsibility like final force on the run it’s just crazy to me. Good luck with the RPOs bro lol lock the box with the run players that are responsible for the run. Set an edge with Ends backers and Safeties. That’s your final force. let corners come back later after it’s all said and done.

Even if the Ravens Run game is everything you said it is plus a couple of special wrinkles, I still don't see it as being diverse or effective enough to ultimately win a Superbowl. I do think the matchup with Anthony Lynn will be interesting because of the familiarity Factor

    • @chrisjohnson8496
      @chrisjohnson8496 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Great response Isaac. I can't help but think back to the Chargers-Seahawks week 9 matchup. Seattle couldn't get anything going on the ground. They'd run it on 1st and 2nd, facing 3rd and long nearly the entire game. The difference between Seattle and Baltimore, Seattle is winning at the line of scrimmage, where Baltimore is winning with scheme. If Baltimore comes out with the same stuff they've been running, surely the Chargers will have an answer. They've had 3 extra days to prepare! Has Baltimore been holding back some of the PA passing game? Maybe. I doubt it. Baltimore needs this game and the only way they're winning is by taking chances and going for broke. If Baltimore looks at that Seattle-Chargers tape, they have to know they aren't going to win by running the same schemes, even if they're different from Seattle's.
Seattle--you have Russell F'n Wilson!!! I know your line can't pass-block, but run more PA! Seattle's another animal, I don't expect anything to change there with Schottenheimer.
I hope the Ravens realize what they're up against. Defensively, the Chargers are miles ahead of the last 5 teams the Ravens have faced. They have to do more RPO and PA pass. I doubt the Ravens will empower Lamar the passer. They may take a few deep shots, but to win this game, they're gonna have to leak some of those TE's over the middle, catching the cheating LB's. I really hope Baltimore doesn't think they'll win this game running the same stuff, even tougher coming off a short week.
      Thank you Isaac and Brett!

Its also a bit gratifying when you do a video on the ravens, and come to a lot of the same conclusions, and notice the same problems that I do. Ive been nervously waiting for a decent defense to shut down this scheme, and leave it to Lamar to win the game with his arm, which i dont think he can do yet. The chargers are fixing to be that decent defense. I want to see my team do well and i want to see my new qb prove me wrong, but I really don't think they will

  • @Taosravenfan

Just like defenses will adapt to their scheme, it will be the job of Roman and Marty to adapt to the adaptation. But to insinuate that this is all they do and we are waiting for it to crash and burn is not fair. The chargers took the lead in that game and Lamar promptly threw a 75 td to our TE.
He is a very talented raw QB. He is humble and works his ass off. But he has arm talent. He needs time.

Jake Johnson Not easy at it sounds, you can’t just get away with it. If you just hold the edge the Ravens can start running power and QB draw plays, which they do.
The difference between the ravens and a high school offense (and why Roman is a good scheme designer) is that they mix in a lot of different running styles and looks throughout their formations, you can’t just focus on the ones that look like read option the ravens run the ball in power and zone a lot too. On top of that if you’re always holding the edge it takes the teeth out of your pass rush which is actually what the ravens want so Lamar can be given the cleanest pockets.

For all ravens fans. This guy is right, the ravens offense when broken down is not based on execution, but it is based on preying on defenses lack a fb iq, like he said. But do not stress, what this guy doesn’t know is the new OC Greg Roman. He makes the ravens offensive play book simple and tries to dumb it down which he does a good job of but he’s not a ravens fan and doesn’t follow and study the team enough to know this. Greg roman creates this offense for one reason and one reason only. For Lamar’s short term success and success of the team short term!!!! This isn’t his long term solution. Jackson was not ready to start this year they didn’t expect him to but you can’t predict what will happen they didn’t want to just throw him into the fire with no plan. This whole scheme was to save our season not to be the future it’s a place holder until Lamar develops. Also they lost in the playoffs I know that this comment is late. Wait and see next year this offense will be different because the best way to put it is Greg Roman is the king of unpredictable he’s not a one scheme oc he always switches schemes to cater to players strengths which ironically is what the patriots do not saying he’s bill but the concept and outlook he says is the same.

You do a fantastic breakdown of the "force, fill, and spill" strategy and unwittingly expose why the Baltimore offense becomes virtually unstoppable. That CB" force" releases the Baltimore WR . That WR is literally set free. You now have a previously occupied Will on the "spill". The WR only has a safety to beat. No defense is going to let a WR roam free whether they think LJ can throw or not. Therein lies the dilemma for defenses. LJ forces defenses to play 11 on 11. Not the traditional 11 on 10. And few 11th men can match LJ's speed. I know this is post your report but you see what the Baltimore offense did to one of the best defenses in football. Spys on LJ do not work. Lyn said so himself. The Ravens dominated the Chargers.
Yes this offense is totally sustainable ( the new catch phrase of the haters and doubters) all the way to the SB. Even if LJ gets injured RGIII is there to fill in. I look forward to your future reassesment.

Yep. Sounds good while watching film. You still have to show up and play. Go RAVENS!!!!!

Man you called it. The Chargers were all over this in the wild card match up. Force, fill and spill with 7 DB’s. This wild card game between Chargers and Ravens will be the film that most teams study next year before playing the Ravens. Lamar Jackson is a talent for sure but take away his legs and he proved that he cannot beat you with his arm. I’m afraid he will fall under the same category as Vick, RGIII, and others. In my opinion NFL QB’s gotta lead with the arm and the legs are a bonus and not the other way around. We’ll see, but I don’t see long shelf life for Jackson and the Ravens offense unless they get the pass game going. Great video and breakdown... you articulate well. You had me hooked and I’m not even a Ravens fan.

Vick could throw most of the time though, that's what separates him from the rest modern mobile QBs

Waifu Wars Racing you’re right. Out of all the running back QB’s he was the one that remained consistent throughout the years. I personally love a quarterback who is a pass first threat versus a run. This is why you have RB’s.

Aye Brett, the scheme is still working like a charm. They just beat the disciplined patriots.

it's not the same scheme thought, when roman took over they remade the offence, they were even talking about bringing in option coaches (they brought in the old navy coach at least iirc) to help make some option plays to stall during the year.

LetsGetWilly I should have specified, I mean the footage that looks to be NFL Films. In the early parts of the video.

Noe Hernandez he’s fine. Flacco gonna get paid by someone next year considering how many teams need a qb. RGIII must be pissed you mean.

Great video, now do a video on Seattle's rushing attack, the only team who's better at it than the Ravens.

I've been asking for this one for weeks now. The transformation between Cable's concepts and Solari's concepts is staggering, and I want to see the nuances of it that I can't catch on film myself.

Great video. If they can figure out different schemes or are able to alter the current one they can remain successful, staying ahead of defenses figuring them out. At one point that will inevitably lead to more passing though. I think he will become better on that.

This is so similar to Warriors' offensive switching. They throw so many switches and packages that you start to wonder what as a defender do I do?
