  • Matt Risinger reacts to post frame construction. I took Matt around to a few of my jobsites to get his instant reaction and had a great time. If you are curious what a building science guy thinks about Post Frame...not a pole barn, then take a look at this video and give me your thoughts. We show Matt Risinger Post Frame structures that you'd expect like a barn...to residential homes.
Make sure to go check out the Build Show with Matt Risinger
    / mattrisinger
Big shout out to Joey P for shooting this video for me. Joey, shoots the majority of Matt's content, and I have to be honest, it was awesome not have to do all the work on a video for once.
I took Matt to an open frame project in the middle of construction, a light commercial project which was almost done....spoiler alert its the Music Garage....We then toured the Cabin in the Woods and finally stopped at my parents post home we built them.

It's great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Of course, I'm pleased with the outcome and this Ryan's th-cam.com/users/postUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans was extremely useful to me as a guide.

If you engineer your roof trusses to reposition the load you can design a wide range of roof profiles. HAS to be engineered properly and the cost is substantially more but it can be done. Like I tell people with enough time and money anything is possible. One of the two usually turns them away but not always, steel comes into play at that point but can carry significant greater loads.

The best wood is (1) ship mast yellow locust wood which can last like a rock, the next one is (2) cypress cedar wood, the next one is (3) chestnut wood, the next one is (4) heart redwood when you use only the most reddish deep red and dark red inner core of the redwood tree. All are in America. The next is (5) Ipe wood which has a fire rating equal to steel and is as hard and tough as concrete and the next is (6) Azobe wood which can even withstand marine wood borers.

The hunting lodge *is* a nice looking place. Then you guys say something and we hear what it sounds like -- a barn. That would be my big concern with this style of building. With the metal roof and the style of construction of the exterior walls, how do you make it sound and feel like a home instead of a warehouse? I'm sure the answers are getting better and better on that, but as somebody looking to build a house in the next few years, that's what would give me pause.

Some of us don't understand tall ceiling buildings in cold climate. The temps upstairs vs. downstairs are huge differences which makes it very uncomfortable. We prefer the ranch style designs with large covered porches around the structure. And of course, detached large garages complete with full bathroom, utility sink and floor drains along with plenty of 220v electric features switches and receptacles galore. Internet CAT6 cable is also a must for online access etc.

I’ve been thinking about how do use the pier foundation but built to the level of a house. What would you think of wrapping that U shaped cavity at the bottom of the wall with zip tape. Then running a vapor barrier under the slab (taped to the zip.) Then pour the slab.
I think the inside would work well, I just can’t visualize the exterior detail to keep that exposed framing mostly dry and concealed. Maybe just stone would be sufficient

The sad thing is this is truly a great option for residential....hear in Canada it only seems to be a thing in the Prairie provinces, I am looking to move to the east coast and was looking for a builder to do one, but to no avail. There is only one engineering firm in the province I want to end up in that designs Post Frame piers and the frames, but for typical commercial set ups like farms. They haven't had one for a residential set up yet. Kyle he actually mentions you when I spoke to him about a house version.

But Post Frame is an engineered product which I think is great but Now Kyle I need you to do a video for me and everyone else who is getting a heart attack at lumber pricing right now. What would a 40*60' 2 story high Post Frame run just framing costs bulk park if you use Steel now instead of the lumber which is outrage priced right now. I mean even roof trussing as steel. I know and I been looking at it more and more and have to say that price is now cheaper than lumber. But I do like to hear your cost break down as well. Light weight steel roof trusses with keymarkenterprises for example they are out of DFW area where their factory sits.
