It was crazy. I bought it from lady when it was already broken, so i only had to drive it a mile or so. But i could feel the back axle shifting around. It was almost like driving on ice. I did it at night and went really slow though, to not cause extra damage. Check amazon (link in video description) if you want some low cost replacements for your ZJ.
Thanks for the video! I've been driving my '94 ZJ with both upper control arms broken out for over two months and this video is finally giving me the motivation to fix them!
I spent most of last summer fixing 2 Grand Cherokees up. Ive replaced pretty much every single part imaginable. lol, have fun man! let me know if you have questions.
JerryRigEverything , yeah, did my upper on 99 Laredo. that ball joint would not pop so cut the arms off to give we room to get bolts out. did the driver side arm. about ready to bolt the joint on and then the arm today. now, I noticed the right tire is rubbing on the shock. not sure if will align up once control arm upper A frames gets bolted up or if it is because the passenger side still has the one older lower still on. will jack up the frame so rear hangs and see if it shifts back to the left an inch or so. also not sure if the lowers have an up down left or right, obviously the ends are pretty easy to figure out. this video has different lowers than mine.
They are the same part. So if you order 2 of them, you can put them on either side. I just double checked a few other sites on the net, and they said the same thing. So you should be just fine.
You'll be fine, as long as the car sits far enough off the ground so you can slip under it, you really don't even need a jack. I jacked up the frame to give me a little more room, but i left the tires touching the ground.
JERRY YOU NEED TO GIVE THIS CAR A GOOD COAT OF FLUID FILM even its rusted it will stop the rusting process ,,, i know you filmed it it in 2012 use this for future reference FLUID FILM WOOL WAX great stuff ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, jk,,,,, good video
Thanks for posting just bought a 94 JGC last week and found out today both of them were rusted and cracked! Your video was a life-safer! My bolts were rusted too-RUST DOES SUCK!
The jeep I just got has the bad bushings, feels like the front axle shifts front to rear. Shifts so bad it is causing the tires to rub on the fenders under hard braking. You didnt have to jack the jeep up to remove the lower control arms? awesomeThanks for the video
Great video, did each side in 10 minutes flat...impact wrench helped and to align the control arms, just use a screw driver, no need for the winch. Thanks!
Yeah haha im ordering them tomorrow. Are the rear uppers the same exact part? Like should I order 2 of those dorman control arms or is there a different one for each side?
wait a minute you used wrenches lol. I got pbblaster, impact tool, breaker bars and worried about snapping my equipment or bending mounting. Still fighting mine and sprayed with pbblaster letting it sit
Okay, thanks for the videos you post, seems everything wrong with your jeep is wrong with mine, so I will be following your videos until I get the kinks worked out. This is greatly appreciated and thanks for the quick reply. I pulled the right rear axle because of my suspected bad bearing, turned out the axle was ruined, the bearings were gone, grease seal was in pieces, so had to hit the junk yard, if you need help with that hit me up on here
Anyways I am adding adjustable control arms to my jeep tonight, maybe tomorrow night... any advice, if I only have ONE jack lift lol (no jack stands)... 96 ZJ
I love how you neglected to put the year in either the title of the video or the description. You didn't even show the Jeep in the video so we could determine ourselves.
hi i have a 98 jeep grand cherokee and my question is . i only need to fix my passenger side arm bar do i have to weld anything because my bar isnt broken its just hanging . the piece that holds it up snapped .
Why does EVERYTHING seem to be so much easier when you are on youtube, looking at how to's with someone working on their jeep, and you go to yours and it never goes as easy as you just saw it lol SOMETHING always happens
Liked the video, and its giving me the confidence to move forward to replace the front lower control arms with adjustable ones. ( i have a small lift). With that you jacked up the jeep... Were your stands on the frame to let the suspension hang or under the axle tube?
I have control arm issues on my wj right now. They arent rotted through like yours are, I think my bushings are shot though because im getting like a weird torque steer feeling when on and off the throttle. Think that would be a good spot to start?
I'm ordering those uppers soon. My drivers side feels like its about to snap too. I could crush the middle of it with one hand If I wanted too..haha its not too strong anymore
Bro haha why did it take me so long to figure out it was you...long time subscriber &a huge fan of your phone torture. For one did you just buy the liberty? If not you rely should pay way more attion to your ride man that was definitely a dangerous failure . Wile you was under it bench pressing them nuts off do you think it would be a pita to do the upper control arm ? Rate that pita scale 1-10
Plenty of it, I'm bout to have a bitchin time. I've got more work needing done on my jeep than it's even worth but I love it so much and you've got a video for about everything, so why the hell not? Cheers!
Very informative how to vid. I replaced all my control arms 6 months ago before i seen your video. I wasn't aware that the Bushing Lip was to face the inside so i checked mine and i have 3 control arms w/lips facing the wrong way, what is the Harm if i leave them that way? Haven't noticed anything different in the ride.

Its a pretty easy repair, have fun w/ those bolts!
You'll be fine, as long as the car sits far enough off the ground so you can slip under it, you really don't even need a jack. I jacked up the frame to give me a little more room, but i left the tires touching the ground.
Sounds like you have quite the project ahead of you. Good luck bud!
Ya, the control arms can be removed without jacking up the jeep. The leaf springs support the weight of the vehicle. Good luck!

Remember you are looking at the highlight footage. lol, i spend most of my unrecorded time with slipping wrenches and punching metal.
Nice man! Big tools sure do speed things up ;-)
Thanks for posting just bought a 94 JGC last week

I linked some from Amazon. Usually they arent too expensive.
the ratchet strap trick, nice work jerry rigging !!!
Its pretty simple. Unless there is rust. Then you're in for quite the ride ;-) Good luck!
rust never sleeps ... neil young
I did the same thing with the ratchet strap today. Doing the fronts tomorrow. Wish me luck!
ITS MUCH BETTER TO FIND OUT YOU HAVE RUST FROM SOME GUY WITH A HAMMER, THAN IT IS TO FIND OUT ON THE FREEWAY AT 80MPH.

Great video, did each side in 10 minutes flat...impact wrench helped and to align the control arms, just use a screw driver, no need for the winch. Thanks!
Its a 94 or a 95, but I think from 93-97 all the parts are basically the same.
PRESIDENTELDER MARKHOFFMAN Who gives a fuck, don't you see that he probably can't afford fancy tools, at least he tried.

Can you tell me why someone told me that the front end had to be taken apart to do this
Anyways I am adding adjustable control arms to my jeep tonight, maybe tomorrow night... any advice, if I only have ONE jack lift lol (no jack stands)... 96 ZJ
So how much did you pay for the replacement parts and how long did it take you to get this installed?
Question for the [A frame] upper control arm bolts to the body. Seems one of them spins any tips for repair / fix thanks.
do you need to replace the uppers and lowers or can you just replace the lowers cause my uppers are fine
This job is a million times easier to do when your bolts aren't bent up from hitting a boulder. But basic instruction helped. Thanks
Joey Collins lol, I feel ya, bent bolts are the worst. Thanks for watching!
i noticed on mine that there are spacers between the controll arms that are rusted totally out were do i get those
Anyone know where to find a replacement bolt for the upper control arm to axle ,torx head bolt
I love how you neglected to put the year in either the title of the video or the description. You didn't even show the Jeep in the video so we could determine ourselves.
hi, do you need jack stands to do the upper control arms or you just can replace them with the car on the ground ???
You can replace it with the car on the ground. The jack stands just give you more room to work. I would recommend them.
JerryRigEverything thanks, i just got the polyurethane set of bushings, i hope they work better than rubber.
hi i have a 98 jeep grand cherokee and my question is . i only need to fix my passenger side arm bar do i have to weld anything because my bar isnt broken its just hanging . the piece that holds it up snapped .
It sounds like you'll need to weld it. (Unless you are talking about the control arms.. than just replace them.
Yeah I think I need to weld it .... Can I just strap it up for tempo uses
Did you ever strap your broken mount bracket? The reason I ask is the same thing happened to me
Why does EVERYTHING seem to be so much easier when you are on youtube, looking at how to's with someone working on their jeep, and you go to yours and it never goes as easy as you just saw it lol SOMETHING always happens
The strap works for lining up the bolt holes but a floor Jack under the front of the rear end is much much faster. FYI.
Liked the video, and its giving me the confidence to move forward to replace the front lower control arms with adjustable ones. ( i have a small lift). With that you jacked up the jeep... Were your stands on the frame to let the suspension hang or under the axle tube?
They were on the frame. Raising the rig up enough to let me underneath to see what I was doing.
I have control arm issues on my wj right now. They arent rotted through like yours are, I think my bushings are shot though because im getting like a weird torque steer feeling when on and off the throttle. Think that would be a good spot to start?
My wife has a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have to replace the upper control arm ( The Boomerang ) Do you have a video for that part ?
James Vann I dont... I only replaced the rear control arms on this rig.
James A. Vann did you ever figure out how to get the ball joint to break free?
Thanks for the vid, I just found out that i need new control arms
I'm ordering those uppers soon. My drivers side feels like its about to snap too. I could crush the middle of it with one hand If I wanted too..haha its not too strong anymore

Would that be causing a death wobble? I have it on my Cherokee and these are the only things I find loose on it
Alexander Gonzalez yes
do u know what size bolts r on the upper rear control arms i need replacements
bboor111 I thought he said 15 s
Plenty of it, I'm bout to have a bitchin time. I've got more work needing done on my jeep than it's even worth but I love it so much and you've got a video for about everything, so why the hell not? Cheers!
Good video. Thanks for the good info.
if you don't have a breaker bar use your hydraulic jack.
GOOOOOOD fuckin idea. Hope I don't have to use that one tomorrow. Also CAREFUL when you do this, don't lift your car off the jackstands!!!!
1trucavalier thanks for that idea 🤔😂 (new tool use)
What year is this on?
I have been an auto mechanic for 37 years the best way to bust your knuckles is that way get yourself a grinder cut it off
Hey good video, I think your title is a little misleading though, as you only replaced the lower rear control arms not the upper.
NJJJ112 he did uppers bud....watch the first couple minutes....uppers take the torx bit and a 15mm...
Very informative how to vid. I replaced all my control arms 6 months ago before i seen your video. rosslato You should be just fine. I doubt it matters. I was just going off of how the control arms were installed originally.
What year is this vehicle ?
James Vann I *think* it was a 94 or 95. Its been awhile.
2001 Lincoln navigator
Lkq
lol, ya... the sooner the better!
You need to invest in a breaker bar
+Josh Fellows ...And pneumatic tools... maybe a car lift... a garage... but whos keeping track.
Who needs power tools? I'm the same way. I do everything by hand.
Great! Thanx Jerry
rosslato No problem! Thanks for watching!
This was only the lower arms not upper and lower
That's not broken off!
It's eaten away!🤣
jerry riging jerry springer >??
Death wobble? ^^
more time spent on removing a bolt rather than ino on the project. nice teaching plan.
Terrible wrenching star bolt seriously
So much rust ...trash the frame and get a new one
Why is he whispering the whole video
10 uears old and still useful
