Another great video Karen I need more ! You will have to train your Dad up on editing to give you more time to film 😂. Calf is a belter, and your animals are a credit to you and your dad. You are building a pedigree, which, like you is impressive.👍💙
Karen I found your channel a week ago and caught up on some a recent videos. I am not surprised that you have hit 10k subscribers because what you are doing is wonderful. I'm non farming but appreciate the hard work and dedication. Good luck and kind regards
Congratulations on the 10K. Karen. You deserve it. I’m always so impressed with how you just get stuck into the work, on top of having a full time job. Dad must be so proud of you. Stay safe
Hi Helen, I would like to make some comments on general items that might help you out, that you review in more detail. Water- a hydraulic ram pump, simply made, 30 eu, with 1" wavin piping would send water to all troughs. Hedging- mixed double thorn hedge, planished after a few years around a boundary, will last for a lifetime. Hazel ,holly, or "scrub" trees can always be cut for firewood. Cattle stick- find an old hazel trees and cut 10 straight 8 ft lengths from 5 trees, 3/4" on the hand, in November, cut to 5/ to 5 1/2'ft long, and put away. You now have 3 legs over boggy ground, and a great yard stick. Your cattle are in great thrive, dry stock should be tame, it is Limousin/ cross that are wild. Call cattle rather than hunting them, tease them with nuts in a v small bucket, or carrots, Yeosht- you will enjoy this. I can go in to a suckler field that a dairy has fecked up and in 1/2 an hour settle them. Throw the word yeooosht across a field slowly, 3 times, and the cattle will come slowly, turn your back on them, 5 mins, stand there, and they will settle. You can walk around and they will follow, they will get your sent then. Same in a yard, say it before you are about to do anything. ie- talk to them first. You are rushing. Check this from a cattleman. You are starting at zero every day. The worst thing you can do to drystock land is put urea on it, anytime. Pumping. short stubby sweet grass, 5 varieties, that a dairy would laugh at is exactly what you want for thrive, gain. For drystock soil is the most important, for dairy grass volume. See crumb, clay, soil mixture-if you get excellent at soil you cannot make a loss- in general. Good topping, and great to see the value of a chain harrow, for light and air on grass. Gaps- road fill, old stones, ask around to lorry drivers, take all, drop near shed. Find the hydrological map of your area- are you on shale, andstone ,sand etc. Wet ground- Are you on iron Pan? are you on marl? an 4"auger might tell you the depth/type of what you have, get 3 holes per field, then you might use a mole plough at an angle. However there is another trick- 1850 clay pipes were put in in a lot of wet land- at the end of field does water appear at wrong time? boggy? you might find these drains and open, spade, over winter etc. Springs- knowing the ground type you might good water diviner, put a ramp pump on strongest, highest, with valve, over winter. Take pipe off for topp. Cattle can self rotate around a field, confining them fecks them up, silent pneumonia, poaching, again, not suitable. Put in hedging, hazel for sun, to shelter NW wind and summer heat shelter for smaller paddocks. Greedy cows get fooled by this. Rotate a lot. Bag manure- 1 bag/ac in Spring, after a dressing of FYM, rest 1/2 bag even with sand, to top up, 18/6/12. Silage ground- Again 2 bags/ac,18-06-12, 2/3 of crop but way sweeter, far more efficient, not sour or chew gum. The most dangerous thing you have are- your wellingtons. If you fall off MF it is a cost. A kick in to the chest from a heifer because you are puddling in welly.Buy Aigle parcour wells, spray silicone 1/month. You have a lovely manner, and older people would like to help you, but everything worthwhile needs to be checkable. You can review most of this and Moorepark would have trials on silage/bag value, etc. LU- you appear low, stay that way. Hard to make a loss with very low inputs, that is your real aim, least cost. It would be surprising if a dairy farmer within 50 miles of you has ever seen a finished animal. They always miss the last 6 weeks of gain(1CW) as they have never really seen a finished animal. Keep to 24 months. Feed some straw with molasses to all ,all winter, with a handfull of nuts.
We lost one horse and ten cattle one year due to tansy here in the USA Karen you bring back lots memories in my past love your videos God bless you and your family ❤❤
Hi Helen, the ram pump for field drainage can be made from 1/2" piping. A field spike would aerate your ground easily, you would really see difference.Maybe 7ft wide, but light. There might be one in a grain farmer ditch, vintage show etc, ask straw lorries.if you had to you would drive spikes in to a length of tree.Cross the lanes. Somewhere near you is a seed fiddle on the rafters in a shed, for spreading seed. If your grass is too dairy, I hope you have no triploid, you can now hand spread old grass type, Timothy,- see seed savers- or check UK for one bag. NI would be big in to this. Double amount if by hand, but still do. Old grass types held well in cold ground. Change the hydraulic oil, a lot, if using a spike in winter in MF. There is an idea the pedigree herds make more income, selling stock ,but a bit too tricky now.
youve got 10000 subscribers Karen because they all like me seeing you get stuck in to the work and how you go about everything, none of its easy work but understand you get a kick out of doing ti ,as i expect your dad enjoys seeing you just get on eith it ,its so interesting listening to your comentry Karen , keep up the fantastic work your doing XX
Congratulations on the beautiful calf. I'm very impressed with putting a ring on him. I started doing that when I saw Tom Pemberton doing it, and I'd never do it any other way. Very impressed with catching the cow before you handled the calf. Top class work!
Oh Karen How lush is that calf!!! Your family must be so pleased that your able to help out ....outside your day to day job... Your a Saint....the videos you post are fantastic....and addictive..... You make my day ...... Stay safe Eddy xx
Brilliant video Karen, as usual your absolutely amazing . You are so impressive, and interesting too listen to it doesn't surprise me that so many people are following you , your a breath of fresh air .😍
Hes a beaut kar a fine square looking calf.,great to see ye using the local anesthetic it's only a few mill but makes all the difference to the calf.,halfway from the corner of the eye to the bottom of the ear kar you'll hit the sweet spot everytime. Mind yourself you're doing great
Lovely video as always and congratulations on 10000 subs. Great job on castrating debudding and tagging. I think its easier to put rings on calves rather than castrating them when they are bigger. You take such great care of your animals and are so kind to them.
Glad to see you have reached 10k, congratulations. We always found using the rings was easier and safer than waiting till later when the animal was older and harder to handle. Reply
Hi Karen You will be on 20k very soon, your such a likeable girl and your not arsed about getting your hands dirty and getting the job done so well done x Hope the hangover wasnt to bad after the hen 😊x
I think farmer p given you another mention would of help get you to 10k 🤩we ring bulls for us it's easier but there is two of us👌 Your a inspiration to farming and we're all proud of what you achieved Take care stay safe 😘😘
Great video again, lovely calf… he won’t be sorry that he’s finished with that crate. Letting the dung heap rot down a bit before spreading is probably the best job even though you’d probably prefer to keep the yard tidy.
Good job! Don't worry about how others might do things. There's always another way, but you do it how it best works for you. The calf didn't seem to mind all that much. Thanks!
Ringing is the only way to do it Karen. A calf getting squeezed will stand with a hunch in its back for 3/4 days and not do any thrive. I ringed a calf today and it was bouncing around the pen 10mins later! Dehorning paste is a super job too and a lot less stress too!
Once again Karen a Job well done. Love the feling you show for the Cows and the young Bully. Keep up doing what is best for you as you have found out some like the easy way and not always the best way as often with the cream they do need to be re done then a chore you wont need. Fit and Healthy Family you have and maybe i would if mine milk the Lower teet to keeep the fresh from sitting on top all the time. Great Videa and we love your energy. Aussie Bob.
I remember my dad doing the dehorning like that when we were young. He had a purple antiseptic spray that he used on cuts etc on the cows . If we cut ourselves when we were young he would use it on us too. It used to sting like crazy and we would go to school covered in purple dye
Well done Karen, you are correct dehorning is just totally cruel and unnecessary. That is a lovely calf you have there, good luck with the rest of the calving
10 k already well done! I am a fan of taking out the bud myself , just to avoid slugs , we knock out the calves here for the last few years, just an I.m. Injection and they go to sleep, seriously handy hop in the pen inject 6 calves wait 10 minutes and debud them no crate no dragging them out or in couldn’t be handier.
I actually tried to get that but they wouldn't give it to me at the vets. Told me a vet would have to do it so I just went with the local anesthetic again
@@karenmoynihanfarm one of my sons is a vet so we didn’t have any problems getting it, must ask him if it’s normal for farmers to get it, however I think I heard that some farm relief people are offering a service to go to the farm and do a lot of calves for so much a head, could be wrong.
hey Karen good to see you back and congratulation with the first calf regarding his mon i would milk her to the milk don't go sour inside her because then you will have a whole other problem like mastitis, (and you are not sure just call a vet on the phone and ask the don't cost much) she will still make more then enough milk for him after you milk her, i wish you and your dad a happy easter, love from Denmark

i wish you and your dad a happy easter, love from Denmark

I would not milk her she won't go wrong by leaving the milk in her pull a few swarts out of 2 back tits to check for mastitis, great cow & calf
