Blows my mind that after 17 years there are still things like this undiscovered. Between the internet, and the fact that most games tell you if you've found everything, you'd expect the top players know every last tiny detail, and then it turns out they totally missed a coin sitting on the ground.

Every DK64 speedrun is now a 101.99999% run
The fact Is, neither coins nor colored bananas are part of the game % progress. [Of course, It's escential to progress]
Note that Banana Medals, which require getting 75 colored bananas in each level, are required for 101%; colored bananas are not essential to progressing in the game in a speedrun though, as it is fairly trivial to clip into each boss room.
Captain Catfish nope, all previous speed runs are 99%. if you missed this coin, you didn't 100% it
j hrk Coins don't count toward the game completion percentage. So this makes no difference. 101% is not "all collectables". There is an All Collectables category, but it's like 7 and a half hours long and nobody likes it. Lol

+Chris Beach it's very likely! Isotarge just happened to be the first to document it. It's kind of like any discovery of an animal species. It's pretty likely somebody has seen it before, but there's no way they would know it's important or unknown or even feel like reporting it. The fact that speedrunners knew about coins that were OOB before knowing about this one is really a testament of how hard it was to find.
Or the game is just incredibly glitchy :D
EZScape probably one of us as kids found it and didnt care i have a file with 70+hours on it and i couldnt find the dirt patch i know the spot and it wasnt there i played a new file and it was there so i must have got it long time ago
People have literally bombed every inch of every Zelda game to look for secrets but DK64 players couldnt even spot a bump on a grass patch SMH
DK64's hidden areas are clearly marked by switches, unlike Zelda, which has weird puzzles like Song of Storms next to a random tree to open a grotto, or Mario 64, which had breakaway walls without clear markers. DK64 didn't give players a reason to search for secrets.

@Paul Martin technically people already knew it was there, they just didn't know how to activate it outside of glitches or ID clip, and you can also activate it by save and reload method, since your character "falls through" the floor for less than a second before going back to it's original height, so Doom 2's case isn't nowhere to be comparated to the DK64 one, because people knew it was there since the map of the level marks that place in purple when you walk over it, but it doesn't consider it a secret revealed because the secret trigger was placed way too low on the map for the player to trigger it via normal gameplay, it was "unobtainable" until zero master figured out a way that didn't require the save/load method, which isn't allowed during Demo records. Donkey kong 64 however, there's simply no fucking way to see it unless you notice a very small change on the surface type, which people probably did in the past but never called it out.

I seem to remember knowing about this coin as a kid, but thought nothing of it as I never thought anyone would want to collect every coin, mainly because the game gives you way more coins than you need to beat it.

I am 29 years old. I remember the exact moment I turned off Ocarina of Time for the last time, because I realized I had done everything you can possibly do in the game. It was an intensely sad moment of my childhood. So it makes me very happy that people are STILL finding new things in these old games :)

I was a fan of SM64 and I was also sad when I beat the game multiple time 100% and realize there was nothing more to do in the game, so when I realize there was like *A LOT* of decent fan made hack of that game it took me years to do all of them. lol

This video was recommended for me, I couldnt deny my curiosity as DK64 was the First game I bought myself. After watching this video, I had to consult my own Save file so after unpacking my n64 and finding my copy of DK64. I Have discovered that 8 year old me found this rainbow coin. Well done 8 year old me, 24 year old me hates collectibles and would never find that.

I found it when I was 4 (back in 2005.) I called it "Coin Grass" since I did not know there was a dirt patch underneath.

Let me get this straight: The speedrunning community, notorious for hitting basically every movement combination near every wall and piece of floor, and spending days at a time practicing everything to try and shave 2 seconds off of their time or the record, even hitting out-of-bounds objects/warps in some cases, and literally nobody ever noticed this one dirt patch that was in the game normally?
Damn, would be kinda cool if somebody finds an extra red-coin in Mario 64 that can spare seconds off of the world record and can only be hit with one of those break-dance kicks. I'd imagine the insanity if that happens.

Wow. I was expecting something like the uncollectable coin in Super Mario 64. You know, something out of bounds, and that's why it went unnoticed.
Can't believe this went unnoticed by the larger community for so long. The list that he was using that said that this coin was not a part of it, was it a list compiled by the game or whatever guy made the program? If it's actually registered as not a part of collectibles in the game, then I guess I'm inclined to believe that Rare hid it so well, they forgot it was there at all.
TheDisarminghinkle someone made the program and listed all collectible's, since a program like that would be the end all be all to finding all items, I suppose it's easy to think that there's no way somebody missed 1 coin

I kind of want to imagine the conversation that followed the runner finding that patch. And the conversations that lead to those runners discovering that their runs are now invalidated. I'd have loved to have been the fly on the wall of that shocking conversation.
My brother and I actually found this one back in the day. I vividly remember us both being really surprised by this Rainbow Coin, but we didn't think anything of it. If I recall, I found it because (being a child) I was spamming the slam attack everywhere I would walk, so I was bound to run into it eventually.

I remember getting that as a kid and I thought it was in a stupid spot. It is right next to the character change, so it is really easy to notice your character raise up randomly in the grass. I had no idea this was not none by people

Does anyone else find it weird that people found a way to glitch ocarina of time so you could teleport to the last boss as young Link after the first dungeon, but couldn't find a pile of dirt under some grass in DK64? XD
Yeah but that kinda has to do with the popularity of the games. I bet people are waaaaaay more for oot and are more hardcore searching in oot than dk64. But i found this as a kid so i got that going for me..

I actually knew about that coin ever since I was a little kid but since I never watched the DK speed runs I never knew that it was undiscovered by the DK 64 community. I found out about that patch of dirt because of what you said. How the kongs slightly go up when crossing over it. Damn, if only I knew you guys didn't know about it I would have totally told the community and been "the first to discover it" hahah

Ruler Of The Wasteland I was expecting something that had never been discovered before, like some kind of easter egg, Not something that 3 people he asked hadn't found before, that thousands of people have probably found but thought nothing of it because it's not even that well hidden, It's right next to that character change barrel thing so the chances of walking over it are very high.

Well this will inevitably lead to an interview with Grant Kirkhope in which he tells us why it was hidden so well and probably also tells us how many of the sexual innuendos were deliberate.

It's more like 17 years to find something that a minority of people found. Sounds like the vast majority of DK64 runners had no idea that this was even in the game. They found OUT OF BOUNDS coins before they did this. It may seem silly and obvious, but keep in mind if someone who did know about the coin cared about this, they didn't speak up. Nobody spread the information about the coin before for the years this game was being speedrun.
New Zen It's not the first time someone discovered it but because none of these people bothered to document it till now, might as well have never existed in terms of speedrunning. This happens pretty often with animal species. The ceolocanth was thought to be extinct but fishermen have been catching them no problem without a scientist bothering to fully investigate it lol.

I find it hard to believe that this coin has never been found before. It probably just hasn't been found by anyone who cared about documenting it.

What's funny is that someone posted a video claiming they discovered a pile of dirt in 2017, and now this apparently becomes the first time such a thing was discovered... while me and my friend knew about this dirt pile since 2006... unbelievable that how a video uploaded on TH-cam can make you the first discoverer of anything just because you posted about it first on this platform.

I use to mess around in my games and go exploring. I actually noticed a hump in the tall grass when I walked over it. I thought it was some secret so I tried ground pound and etc until I did that move leart from the Banana fairy. So this coin was no secret to me...
So yeah! It was found 22 years ago :P Had no idea Speed Runners didn't know about it though lols! I'll just take this as my DK64 flex! ;)

It's hard to believe people ran by those obvious dirt piles and never noticed... I definitely remember the rainbow coins from when I was a kid.
Yeah, it seemed clear to me too. If I had know most people did not know of it I also would have spoken up.
The thing is it's such an obscure insignificant thing in the back of my mind's memory that I never imagined it would have been important in any way. I also hadn't watched any speedruns on the game until recently, but even then I doubt that my memory of it would have been triggered until I had seen this video. As, I would have just trusted speedrunners to have figured all this collectable stuff out by now.

Lachlan Barclay video games don't work like that. it's not like there's a line of code that says "rainbow coins 100/120". like explained in the video, it's all a mess of random flags even with softwares to assist in sorting through the code.

I get this is a case of something hidden in plain sight so it's funny it wasn't documented, but that still means it wasn't discovered by the Donkey 64 community. It's like that hidden programmer message in the port of the original Donkey Kong to Coleco or one of the other old systems. It's went undiscovered for years, but you know there was probably some guy who got it to show up and just never noticed or just went, "Oh cool." and never thought of it ever again.

I really thought that I knew everything about it and that I had collected all the secret or special things... it's almost heartbreaking to not know that there were 2 rainbow coins per level and that hidden rainbow coin in Fungi Forest. I'm glad someone found it, but it's so sad it wasn't me

A lot of people are making this point, but think about it. There are probably hundreds of people who speedrun DK64, and these guys spend hundreds of hours dissecting this game on a super deep level, so the fact that not once has one of them noticed it or recorded is still totally crazy.
But does it give you an inflatable coconut gun? And can it fire in spurts?

That's surprising, I found it pretty much the first time I played through the game.
At the time I thought it was odd to hide a stomp pad where it was difficult to see, but I figured the kong elevating briefly when passing over it was enough of a giveaway that the majority of people playing the game would find it.

Pesquids Gamer only about 3.7 million copies have been sold worldwide. I somehow doubts a third of all people who have ever played the game found this coin. I'm also not doubting that SOME people found it, but damn near every comment on this video is someone claiming they found it easily by themselves when they were three weeks old without a guide and there is absolutely no way that they are ALL telling the truth.
j hrk not obvious, there's bumps and hills in the ground all over the place. Also, even if I had a way to check your save file , which I obviously don't, I never said that NOBODY found it, I'm saying there's absolutely no way that EVERYONE found it who's claimed to.

My sister actually found that rainbow coin years ago on DK 64. It's possible other people who has played DK 64 and don't broadcast or share there gameplay could have found it before also. Still, it's amazing when a item/collectible is found that at least most people didn't know existed. It would be so awesome if Nintendo would graphically remake this game in the future.
Dk64 was the first game I ever played. Its cool to see that new stuff is still being found all these years later...

This specific one in Fungi Forest was never discovered because for some reason they completely hid the mound from the player.
It was covered by grass, literally no one knew about it and it raised the coin count, which invalidates a ton of categories.

Lol, the first time THEY found it, I had the game on the console and found that one by using POV mode with Diddy Kong and I'm sure I was not the only one that found it like that!

Actually I remember finding that coin as a kid because of the ground was slightly elevated and questioning the game developers. I couldn't beat the game until I was an adult though. The original DK arcade was too hard for me lol.
This makes me wanna play back and explore all the levels now.

Crazy how many things get discovered out of nowhere a decade or more after a game's release. Like the fact that you can insta-kill Kalle Demos in Wind Waker with sacred forest water.
So funny story, I definitely found that coin as a kid. About five years ago, I decided to replay the game. I remembered the coin was under all the dirt piles, though I couldn't remember exactly how you got the coin from the dirt pile.
