- This is a drum breakdown, analysis, lesson I did for @modern_drummer online a couple years back of some of Alex Van Halen’s drum parts from “I’m The One”; the awesome high speed double kick shuffle tune off of Van Halen 1.
This is the raw iPhone camera audio only that I happened to stumble across on my phone. The one for Modern Drummer had the vocal mic and drum mics mixed from Pro Tools over this video. But, you can still hear what I’m saying on this. Alex rules! 🥁👍🏼 - เพลง
Ugh.. just noticed this is the unedited lesson, so I pause and leave gaps and repeat myself and include a couple performances things that I thought weren’t happening.. ha .. that’s what ya get for not being thorough before posting.. but thanks for the kind comments anyhow … 🥁👍🏼
Monumentally great Ludwig sound!
Killer, man everything sounds fantastic.
That way you Play that ride just nails it.
I’m a guitar player and I love this!
Got to say I frickin’ love thus video, Brian. A thumbs up simply doesn’t suffice! ❤
The swing and jazz elements to his playing on this are just so smooth and creative. Anyone who says Alex isn’t good is clueless.
I’ve never in my life heard anybody say Alex wasn’t good! I’m almost 50 and my brother started going to VH shows from the 1st tour on.
@mikes51501 absolutely spot on. The reason why other drummers seem to replicate his parts but fall short is because Alex has such an innate sense of swing. When you listen to his solos you definitely hear those jazz and latin chops. Really looking forward to his autobiography. Cheers for the lesson @Briantichydrums.
Brian the best today
So helpful! Thank you so much, Mr. Tichy! Love AVH’s dbl- bass shuffles! Bravo
Great Lesson thank you
Kicking Drum Ass👏👏👍🏻 Drum On!!! Love them Fills 😉
Love shuffles and triplet feel that you got going on.. Great exercises! Thank you, Brian!🤘
Great video Brian! I studied with Bob Cook when you were at Berklee. He was so proud of your accomplishments and happy that you were able to achieve so much.
Wow! Do you have keep in touch with him, know where he is, have a number or email you can DM me?
@@Briantichydrums Last I heard he was living in Florida. Don't know anymore than that. I miss studying with him and listening to his stories about Muzzy. Good times!!!
Love it. Thanks. Great break down, great song.
Alex does rule! Love Alexs drumming!
Also love Brian Tichy! Absolute beast on the drums...drum on!
I love this.....another one of Alex's shuffle grooves that really moves is Source of Infection on the OU812 Album....
Superb! Thanks Brian!!
You make it look to easy xxxxx 🤩
great teacher too thanks
I need this in my Algorithm. Notify ME!
Awesome
I’ve gotten some sticks from Leroy and they’re fantastic
Also awesome to see this, thanks!!
I'm the One, Outta Love Again, The Full Bug, Hot For a Teacher, Girl Gone Bad, Source of Infection just to name a few. I wish to see somebody, anybody do a breakdown of "Pleasure Dome" from the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album. That triplet pattern on the kick drums is pretty cool
I remember seeing you with Vinny Moore at Sparx on Long Island in '92 (?) & my jaw may still be on the ground somewhere out there. Been a huge fan since. This breakdown & exercises are next level depth. Awesome job is an understatement. Im supposed to play this next week figured id see who had cool breakdowns of it & thankfully you have all the nuts & bolts figured out. Me? Im so fucked next week haha!!
Alex VH super underestimate drummer of all the time!!! I love AVH always one of my favorite drummer for style, for sound, for personality for to be in one of the best RnR band of all time!!!!!
You have your hats locked closed. Alex must have either had a drop clutch, or they overdubbed the tss-t-t-tss on the "bop bada shooby doo wah". Whaddya think? I used to play to this when it first came out (I was 22 - energy and strength to spare), and without another kick I just played the off-beat on the single kick. So after starting double kick a few years ago, the down beat naturally fell to my left foot. I like to hear you acknowledge there's no "right" or "wrong" for which foot plays the downbeats. BTW I like to refer to this as a boogie (which I believe is what a fast shuffle is). Now that I'm pushing 70, this is a great physical workout for me. Brings back old memories!!!
I have assumed AVH shut the hats for songs with double kick and close hats (I’m the one / teacher / full bug / loss of control/ get up ). I don’t think they were overdubbing hats …
I lead with the left for any continuous dbl kick playing, and it depends on what it is whether I play left or right lead …. Yes , it’s whatever works for you.. thanks!
Thanks Brian, I am learning! Check out Alex's speed metal feet on 5150's "Get Up" , it's a movin' groovin' tune, Peace!
Get up is sick!
I always thought Alex Early on really sounded a lot like Both Cozy Powell and John Bonham With that speed
🎉
Super batteur 👍👍🎼
👌🏻
"Most" rock drummers are playing the downbeat, but AVH played on the ups quite often, which made VH's rock songs sound a little bit different. Swingin!

@brian Hey bud. Can u Do a video on launching the stick off the floor Tom? 😊
Ha. I could … but even now , every time I do it , it’s guess work … not sure if it’s gonna go straight and high, or be a dud , or spin fast or slow .. it’s totally luck and having been doing for a long time so I kinda know where it should be placed in order to get luckier .. it’s like a big old rimshot that you release …what I want to know is how to do off the snare a la Tommy Lee / Keith Moon…bc that is crazier as it’s right under your face and the potential for serious injury is high …
Nice Brian..! Your BD What size. 24/14 ????
Thx! 26x14
@@Briantichydrums Great Drumming Brother...!
