We're history fans! If we got the patience to read history books we got the patience to listen to an extremely interesting conversation for hours! Never feel bad about the length!
The trick is to ease your way into history books and pick which ones to read smartly. You don’t want to accidentally end up with a college history textbook that is more scientific in its approach. I recommend listening to the audiobook version of Dictatorland by Paul Kenyon to start. It’s a harrowing account of some of the dictatorships that overtook Africa post colonialism. An extremely good read and one of my favorite casual history books.
@@darkflamemaster824 if you listen, they kept saying they didn't want to stretch it out. Hence why it's in parts. My comment was for them to not consider length when having these conversations. Could of been 4 hours long I would of listened to it all
Far out I had to go waaaay back to find this episode. I'm here thanks to Dan Carlin and I am really interested to listen to more of your work. It's always nice to find a new channel 😊 liked subbed all that goodness!
On the discussion of Kaiser Wilhelm and invading Belgium -- the Kaiser absolutely did not want to go to war with Britain, and he ordered Moltke to hold back troops from invading Belgium, but Moltke refused, leading to a massive shouting match. Historiansplaining podcast has a good episode on this, "Origins of the first world war, pt. 13, The July Crisis and the Outbreak of War."
I have to share this. Whilst listening to the line "After the Tsar had signed the mobilisation order, he turned to his generals and said..." at which point an ad started with the song 'Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match"!!! Perfect timing and how different world history could have been if Nicolas had done this... :0)
My choice for most influential leader of the 20th century is Ho Chi Minh. Ho fought and struggled against the French for decades and then the Americans to achieve Vietnamese independence. The 20th was the century of dismantling the imperialist European empires. It was Ho who led the way and showed dozens of other small colonised countries that is was possible to stand up to larger more technologically advanced powers.
Tom Holland and Dan Carlin - together! I occasionally fantasize about who I'd invite to the ultimate dinner party - if I was Bill Gates rich and could send private jets to collect my guests. Dan and Tom are always two of my guests - along with Marc Morris, Catherine Hanley and Levi Roach. Obviously there would be very many others I'd love to invite.
But if Wilhelm hadn't caused WW1, then we'd be talking about Cho, leader of Fascist Korea, and the 15 million Manchurians he killed in the Great East Asian Wars. (which is to say, its very likely some form of horror is inevitable regardless of the path it takes to arrive at it)
Why did you turn your comments off for your rebuttal video to Putin's Tucker video lol. Is it because you mis characterized why he said he invaded? Which was to get rid of the Nazis who were still holding out in the Bakhmut region of the Donbass since the end of ww2. Something that if you have read Col. Glantz work on the eastern front then it seems pretty reasonable.

And if you don’t have the patience, just score some Pervitin and listen to it on 8x speed…
Yea

Absolutely thrilled that I came across this. Been a devotee of Dan Carlin for a few years and recently fell in love with The Rest is History.
This is rapidly turning into my favourite TH-cam channel.

What an absolute delight. I’m a long time fan of Dan and Tom, and could’ve easily listened to a 5-hour long discussion. (:
11 minutes in and this is awesome. Just subscribed.
I’ll be subscribing. You guys are great and awesome having Daddy Dan on.

First time I seen one of your videos awesome work
If this is a Marvel superhero team up, surely Tom Holland would be Spiderman.

You had me at Mongols, subbed
Brilliant discussion.

Storytelling seems a trait we all have and all love wherever we're from.

Seriously somebody give me a reading list with these guys man😂 interesting perspectives on some previously unknown stuff if you ask me.
Was the Kaiser scuffing up the boards with those shoes?
Yahtzee. Carlin in the house.
Can I humbly request a Spanish Civil War episode?
It rhymes a bit too much with today's America in many ways.
Yes please. Spanish Civil War.

Poor Willi! 😢
How can you omit Winston churchil as one of the main military leaders in the defeat of the Nazis?
Fantastic
in Dan we Trust..
"The Kaiser's Deck Shoes" should be the name of a porn spoof.
If you don't pay TH-cam the ads on this are ridiculous!
The Romans. I might be freed someday.
neat
Tom Holland knows virtually nothing about Lenin. These were not the big questions. "If" in history is next to useless.

An advert every 3 mins.. Wtf
Big fan of your shows Byes...but i can't listen to this guy.I did because of your commentary...but not this fellas podcast on his own.
When you pass a restaurant you do you feel the need to go in and tell them how you don’t want to eat at said restaurant?
History doesn't exist 😑
