The stories my father tells me from Iran are crazy. He fled back in the 70s when the Sha was being thrown out. He was in the Iranian army and fought in Oman back in the 60s. The things I have told my buddies brought them to send me this video. They thought I was full of it until you helped confirm the stories my father shared. Last time I went was 2005. Beautiful place.

Ghazvini book is one of the best books I ever read on Iran. I have read many, but his book shows the hope and despair of the Iran/US relationship over the years. I recommend it to anyone who wants to understand what is happening today in the context of history between these two nations who share so many similarities yet are so perplexed by one another. 🇮🇷🇺🇸

Nice show. The 'friendly Iran' mentioned at the start was after the US and Brits helped overthrow democracy: 'The 1953 Iranian coup d'état, known in Iran as the 28 Mordad coup d'état (Persian: کودتای ۲۸ مرداد), was the overthrow of the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in favour of strengthening the monarchical rule of the Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi on 19 August 1953.'' While not many Americans remember the friendly Shah for Iranians it is not so easily forgotten.

We've had a fairly consistent upload schedule though since the last supernova episode. One a month. Keep in mind the entire time the team has been working on another series and these addendum episodes are just interesting interviews to tide us over and keep us listening. I can empathize a little though, I always get the slightest bit of disappointment when I see a new Dan Carlin upload and it's an addendum episode. Mind you, once I start listening it's always great. Not only do people not recall a pre revolution Iran, but they do not remember that a significant part of the revolution were educated ultra liberal left secularist elements who did not want religious fundamentalism, but just a secular democracy free from US hypercapitalist interests - similar to many elements of the Arab Spring. Including many women and feminists. Unfortunately the majority of the anti-Shah were religious fundamentalists who used the progressives, then turned on them and killed and/or tortured them for years, and made them second class citizens. It's part of why many were very suspicious and not idealistic about the Arab Spring at the time.

Same within the US, it’s the 1/10 of 1% who are successful to a point where they do their America’s own marketing campaign via social media, meanwhile, tens of millions of Americans are living literally on the edge of poverty. Tens of millions which is comparable in size of whole countries in Eastern Europe.
