    Was superglad to hit a running store years ago and have my pain alleviated via a stability shoe prescription.
    But that was a long time ago when I ran 2 miles a few times to "get in shape".
    Years later putting in 20-30mi a week and stability starting to feel like clunky bricks at times. Just pounded 6mi this morning on a pair of neutrals. Could better feel foot rotation and was able to adjust accordingly.
    Guess the point is our shoe needs can change especially when hard work is applied and we better grasp what the heck we've been doing wrong.

      It started off with the cool pronunciation ... then the company recommended the boring pronunciation ... now it's officially "sort of" back to the original cool pronunciation. Hoka seems happiest when everyone is right. A disclaimer: I spend lots of money on Hokas.

    I’m a lowly fitness walker (STOP LAUGHING!) and do maybe 20 miles/week, but I’m also 63 and my feet and left knee have been giving me a lot of grief lately. Naturally, I’m in search of the elusive “perfect” footwear. Never heard of Hoka before reading this thread, but I was inspired to make a trip to to my local running store and order up a pair to see if they help. I’ve been wearing Brooks Beast for the last week (aptly named). Support/correction - yeah, but they’re heavy and have about as much comfort and spring to them as my 3 year old, worn out New Balance 990’s. I forget which Hokas are coming, but they seem a lot more comfortable and less... brick-like? than the Beasts. Wanted to say thanks for your video - hoping the Hokas (and a pair of Injinji) will be the answer to my sore feet.

    Had to walk off a HM @10k today, I am in pb shape but when upping distance injury strikes, thanks for the video made a lot of sense as to the injuries I get when upping my mileage, just bought the gaviota 2, those combined with a new hip and glute strength plan hopefully will hopefully get me to and through a marathon injury free, thanks have a great week

    I changed from New Balance to Hoka One One last year! - I had problems with my Achilles running NB Zante & 890 v4's and after the switch a huge difference! - I use both Clifton 3's and Huaka 2, the latter being the most comfortable!

    I've been hitting the web doing a lot of research for trainers and you will laugh when I say that I was looking for the look of the shoe. I'm 83 and like walking a lot to keep fit and didn't want the bog standard black or white ones. As soon as I saw the Hoka range I knew I had found what I was after. The problem in the UK is that not many shops stock Hoke but fortunately I found one just 30 miles away. I had more or less by this time found the style I liked. The shop owner was extremely helpful and recommended the Arahi although I preferred the Clifton 5. Fortunately he had a treadmill where I could get a comparison. I did go for the Clifton in Wide fitting. After wearing them indoors for a few hours something did not feel right and having a pair of orthotics in a standard shoe I tried them and what a difference it made. I have since seen a review on TH-cam for them and that reviewer did exactly the same. Comparing the Hoka insole and the FootActive orthotic the arch support on the latter is more firm. I'm now sold on Hoka for the future.

    I find this to be the most frustrating part of running. I've tried New Balance minimal models and non-minimal models, Mizuno, Sketchers Meb and Go Run models, etc, and I never know what's going to happen until I've been running in them for a few weeks. Many times I develop plantar fasciitis after a few weeks, and then a I switch back and it goes away, so I know it's the shoe's fault. It's such an expensive mistake to pick the wrong shoe.

      I found the process rather simple. I first got the non-support version of a shoe that also has a support/pronation version. for example, I ordered the Mizuno Wave Runner 20. I ran in it for a few weeks under normal conditions, and found that I was getting plantar symptoms. I then switched to the 'pronation' verson of the same shoe - i.e. the Mizuno Wave Inspire 15. The plantar went away. I think the key is to get non/support versions of the same shoe to really test the difference.

    Great informative video. Sometimes is not easy to find out the right shoe, even you have tons of information about your foot, running style but you will not know until you try for real the shoes. What it may work for someone else, it might not be for yourself.
    Reading product reviews and watching videos like this one is a great help to make up your mind until you decide to give a try on a certain model.
    I have to say that haven´t run with Hoka yet but seems the Clifton may be a good suit for me but also interesting in the additional support in Arahi for longer runs.

    My first proper running shoe was Skechers(injured) way back in 2013. then Nike Pegasus(Injured), Pearl Izumis (less injured), NB Boracay (Injured big time). Altra Superior, LP2.5 and Torin (no Injured). I can say for me to avoid injuries for us mere mortals(not an elite runner), go for a low/zero drop shoe.. it'l help you especially on the trails.

    I have a very high arc. And sometimes my foot collapses. Its extremely painfull.
    It can happen after 13 K or 32 K or 50 K...
    Having a very wide forefoot and a narrow heel, I sorry to say, that I havent been able to feel comfortable locked in, using Hoka's.
    A heel that slipped around and made my achilles problem worse. Yes I have constantly painful achilles.
    But I feel that the soles of Hoka's would be better for my feet and the bones in my feet.
    Altra forefoots, Salomon mid- and heel upper and Hoka soles (and a bit more rubber to the road...). Unlike Vibram, Salomon rubber outsoles works in wett rocks.
    A Hoka like that, and I'll buy it !!!
    And I supinate!x
    Tried the Clifton 6.

    From my understanding a low arch doesn't always equal over pronation. Over pronation is excessive movement medially. If your ankle is always leaning inwards from having a low arch but doesn't move excessively when you are running or walking a stability shoe might not be best. A stability shoe doesn't really address arch support it just helps with someone with excessive ankle movement aka over pronation and some would argue that one of the only things a stability shoe does is help make your running shoe last longer as your body will always find a way around what you put under your feet - unless it's a motion control shoe. If you want support underneath your arch then look at an orthotic. I think one of the most important things is arch flexibility and ankle movement. I've working at a specialty running store for the last couple of years however This whole statement is really an open question as I believe that you know more about this subject than I do. I also know that knowledge and opinions on this matter are constantly evolving.

    Was recently advised that I had to wear stability running shoes. So went ahead and purchased them. I have ran 40 kilometres with them and I have never witnessed pains like i have running with them before. The shoe was the Brooks adrenaline GTS 19 shoe fantastic comfortable shoe but not just for me. Going back to a neutral running shoe the good reliable ASICS and maybe fit a light insole.

    Each brand of shoe has a cut specific to them. The most important aspect of picking a shoe is finding the brand(s) that fit your foot shape....the width and arch height. Each brand has a multitude of models to fit each person’s style of running. After you find the brand(s) you can pick the shoe in their line-up that fits your needs.

    If you find a shoe you really like, buy as many pairs as you can afford because the shoe company will "upgrade" it and it wont feel right anymore. Happened to me with Asics (Cumulus) about 8 years ago. I'm still trying to find the right pair. Hokas are too narrow and squishy for me. Still looking.

      I actually think you should get maybe 2-3 pair, but not 'as many as you can.' the reason why is that you want to vary your shoe over time, or the 'bad' elements of the shoe (every shoe has them) will affect you. Then after 2-3 replacements, look hard for another shoe that works.

      Olhildr I'm also having problems with my sesamoids and I'm trying to figure out what the problem is. They've been bothering me for over 2 months now and it is super frustrating. I had an x-ray done in January and they didn't see a fracture so I thought they would have been healed up by now. Do you have any tips or advice on what I should try to help with healing? Maybe I should go see a podiatrist?

    • @Olhildr
      @Olhildr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have had the problem for a similar amount of time. The pain is now almost gone. After the initial pain subsided, I took a look at my biomechanic and saw my calf and plantar fascia were compensating for the injured sesamoids ( they were tight) so I took care of those two the most. What I do: I do not run, at all. I freeze a plastic water bottle and roll it under my foot, as you would do with plantar fasciitis. Stretch my toes towards myself, hold the stretch for 30 seconds and then release. Stretch calves by doing lunges, leaning against the wall or similar. Grasp a towel with my toes. I make sure I don't overdo these. Usually, I do all that in a session that takes around 15 minutes a day and then leave it be. I went through 2 weeks where the pain was enough to make me use Voltaren gel. The gel is a much better option than a NSAID for this issue, as the sesamoids are almost right under the skin and you avoid all the GI and other issues commonly experienced with NSAID. Reducing pain might seem pointless but pain reduction lessens the need of other body parts to compensate for the painful sesamoids. Rest is paramount so for the first 3-4 weeks I did minimal supplementary training or cardio. After that time I was back on my usual regiment of yoga 4-5 days a week, core and stability work. Stability work ( various exercises each done while standing on one leg) are great at correcting compensatory imbalances I developed to avoid pain. I also rode my bike, but only after the initial 4-5 weeks and I started riding gradually. I do not use road shoes and clipless pedals but regular pedals and my running shoes. This ensures that the sesamoids aren't aggravated by the activity ( while researching the injury found that it hits cyclists quite a bit). For shoes, I switched to a pair with the least drop, widest toebox and firmest insole I could find where I live. I settled for Nike terra kiger wildhorse 3. I wear these whenever I am out. Around the house, I wear crocs or slippers. I also meditate in the morning, keep my sleep schedule consistent and eat only whole plant foods, supplemented with B12, and D. Reading is what kept me sane. I devoured quite a bit of books since getting injured. Chi running, Waterlogged, Running with the Kenyans are some running- related that you might find interesting.
      ( Stuff that didn't work or made things worse- custom insoles, metatarsal pads, walking everywhere to make myself feel better about not running- bike is much better and naturally leads to walking less )
      What are some tactics that you employ?

    • @Vo2maxProductions
      @Vo2maxProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      sesamoids take a while for the swelling/pain to go down. Time off from running and from impact...possible added padding.....ice. Practice stretching/flexing the big toe up and down They usually get irritated from blunt force/impact and repetitive pounding

    • @rawfooducation9125
      @rawfooducation9125 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I'm planning on just taking a complete break from running until I have no pain for a few days. I think my shoes were too worn and that is what caused the injury in the first place...
      I have been doing daily stretches with my toes as well as icing the ball of my foot 2-3 times a day. The stretches seem to help the most. I just need to start focusing more on stretching my calves as well, because they seem to be extremely tight.

      inflammation and lower pain feeling I recommended:
      !!DO NOT DRINK ON AN EMPTY STOMACH!!
      Half a teaspoon of olive oil, a half teaspoon of turmeric, a decent pinch of black pepper, a little water (I use boiled water or tea) in small swallow drink.
      Rubbing on the painful spot I recommend:
      Olive oil with Himalayasalt
      That's my personal recommendation, it helped me. As an alternative, I cook turmeric with food, rice, etc.

    Well this is very informative, i’m planning to switch from nike airmax (neutral) to hoka, but i’m nut sure, should i get neutral or stability shoe?
    I tend to supinate sometimes when running and not concentrating on my form.
    Also i put around 40-60 km monthly on the shoe.
    Mainly i run on roads (asphalt ) and it’s 5 times a week.
    For my case :
    1-is it a good idea to use stability shoe ?
    2- is it better to look for more plush ( cushion ) or less plush ?

    OK, a question: as you have reviewed shoes for asphalt surfaces, is the Pronation/Stability also an issue for (Ultra)trail runners? I have an overpronation issues and have selected Speedgoat 2 (for long distances, due to good cushioning) and Chalanger ATR 4 for short/medium runs, which both are to be neutral. I have also heard, that in trails pronation is no a big issue because the soft surface can stabilise it. Can you also make a movie about shoes for trails?
    Best,
    P.

    I currently wear Adidas Supernova Sequence Boost as I mildly overpronate. My biggest problem is that every few months of continued activity, I seem to get problems with my Achilles. It doesn't tear, but I do get a lot of pain and stiffness. Is this something that the HOKA Arahi could help with?

    Sage, what do you recommend over-pronators wear on trails? I know trails provide more variety so your foot isn't hitting the same way every time and there is more variation in ankle movement, but I still get more pronation than normal on those foot strikes that do cause pronation, since I am already prone to it. Thanks!

    What type of shoe do you recommend for those with flat feet that don't over-pronate? I'm pigeon-toed so I don't pronate much. Generally, I run in Kinvara's due to the lighter weight with the added cushioning.

    Can I ask for some advice? I overpronate, however when I have used stability shoes in the past I have ended up with pretty serious arch blisters (especially when I run over 5 miles). In the last year I have been wearing more neutral shoes and these have completely stopped the blisters, I am currently using ASICS Cumulus 18. I would like to try some Hoka shoes, however I am not sure what to go for. I do not want to start experiencing painful arch blisters again, but it would be good to have some stability for my overpronation. Do you have any suggestions? Katie

      @padraiggarrihy8025 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Katie Hainbach I also find arch support to be painful in many instances as on overpronator. I think it is the medial posts which can cause that pain - curious about the technology in the Hoka stability range.

    • @Vo2maxProductions
      @Vo2maxProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      depends on exactly how much you overpronate. you could get away with a neutral cushioned type of shoe to prevent blisters and if that is more comfortable. Also it could depend on the shoe fit/shape. The curvature of the arch, the depth and how the "in - step" is in the design. In this case it sounds like a matter of trying the shoe on (i.e. Clifton v. Clayton v. Arahi) and just seeing which fits better and doesn't put pressure on the arch that could cause a blister.

They were both very comfortable for walking but running in them makes my shin extremely tired within a mile. I went back to running with my cheap $50 Adidas I bought for the gym yrs ago bc it looks cute...n I had no problems. Within 1 week of training I was able to run a 5k n 3 weeks training a 10k. I love my cheap Adidas so I decided to buy a new model adizero that is just as light n thin bottoms.

    The science about pronation and over pronation doesn't stand still. So do stability shoes. Shoes that were recommended in shops years ago now look very wrong. The biggest mistake to make is to think your foot gait needs correcting by a piece of plastic. Our ancestors used to run, hunt for hours and didn't wear stability shoes, despite all sorts of foot shape. With the right transition period and the right ankle and ligament strengthening almost anyone who over pronates can run in neutral shoe (an over pronator who used to even wear orthotics and now runs in neutrals). Just don't believe all the marketing hype.

    Hey Sage, I have been having some problems finding the right shoe. I have been fitted at my local running store but am still having some issues. My left foot is relatively flat and my right foot is normal or high, I have been running on trails mostly the past few months and love it. I am currently switching between the nike kiger 3 and more recently pearl izumi em trail m2 which is not very comfortable at all but has some stability features. I notice some pins and needles sensation in both feet in the pearls which seems pretty clearly to be no good. I love the wide toe box on the kigers but think I may need some higher volume cushioning for longer runs. I seem to be constantly balancing on pain between my left arch and right knee. Any help would be hugely appreciated because I am spending wayyy to much money on running shoes... says my girlfriend.
    thanks - Tristan
