    P.S. The reason why the race was close at the end is because I slowed down a lot in tack A to avoid riding onto the shore and this helped me shoot upwind :P

    Great video Mike, my compliments! I have noted a thing, my Ozone Edge I think is optimized to get great upwind angles going pretty fast I can't sincerely say how much of an advantage I can get slowing down also if I'm pretty sure it exist, but perhaps when I'm using my Ozone Reo with a surfboard I realise that going upwind slow with a surfboard (that is advantaged also by floating) it's incredible, I can get crazy upwind angles going very slow, probably kites have some specific advantages to their nature

    Hey Mike. You should do a video about relative wind. Maybe put shorter lines on a big high aspect ratio kite and glide up wind from where you take off. I think that would be cool

    I disagree with the body balance on the board. To go the most upwind in light wind (as in good wind I don't care much, you always go upwind well) I put lot of pressure on my front leg. Thanks to this bigger part of the board's edge is in the water and it helps to control its direction. Maybe it also gives the board more planning... Don't know exactly the physics behind it but many years of experience conforme it. Try it!

    • @JustKB8
      @JustKB8 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The mechanic behind what you experience is as follows. In very light wind, digging your heels in will slow you down too much, so indeed it's better to put a bit more pressure onto your front feet and level your board out a bit more. The board will plane more easily that way, lowering resistance, increasing your speed which can be translated into a sharper upwind course.
      However, when there is plenty of wind, the technique like Mike explained works best.

      The goal is to minimize the cross-sectional area in the direction of travel and maximize the cross-sectional area perpendicular to that. So yeah, you want your weight as evenly distributed as you can get while maintaining the control to carve upwind. This also let's you go upwind while maintaining a higher speed, but at the cost of tiring yourself out super fast because it's hard to hold the board in that position when lit. It's way easier to lean back and just accept going slower.
      If we look at the extremal case of foiling, you have a tiny cross-section in the direction of travel so you have super low drag. This gives you the ability to go way more upwind than with a twintip. If you look at sailing with a boat that has a super long and skinny keel, you can also go upwind harder than a boat of the same size/weight but with a shorter and wider keel.
      For a given wind speed, board size, and rider weight; assuming perfect technique, you will have a max speed you can reach at any upwind angle. And it's true that the more upwind you go, whether sailing, foiling, or twin tipping, you will lower your max speed. But upwind progress=speed*sin(upwind angle) so if you want to go upwind as fast as possible, you want a moderate speed. And to minimize your drag in the water while maximizing your carving ability, you want fairly even weight distribution on your legs to engage the whole edge of your board.

    Hi i would appreciate if you could answer my question: I have a friend which dad makes carbon boards at his shop for way less than on the market since they are off brand. I dont know if branded wooden boards ( for a similar price) are better just because of a brand. What do you think is it better to buy normal branded wooden board or these carbon board which is inspired by Duotone jamie.
    Hope to receive a reply... thanks

    my core xr pro in size 12 has turned into an old rag the back edge in 8 months because it flutters like a flag in the wind! the company representative said that it is normal but I do not think so this is the most expensive 12 in the world and its threads have come out and stick out along the entire back edge in a year the whole canvas will have to be replaced! soon I will release a video about the truth about the quality of cora!

    Hi Mike! How does this change when you’re riding in low wind?

    • @gethighwithmike
      @gethighwithmike  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yoo Lorenzo! Same consequence for riding fast in low wind. The direction of your apparent wind will always shift and your riding direction will suffer as you pick up speed.
      The trick is to get enough speed that you're able to plane steadily at an aggressive angle upwind, without dropping in the water.

      I would say, the trick in low wind is to ride even slower😂.
      No really. Where most kiters lose out is when they change direction and want to get up to speed quickly again.
      Especially in lighter or gustier winds, where your are sometimes short on wind, keep your upwind edge no matter what, keep tension on the lines by up/down steering the kite, and only, and slowly, accelerate when the next gust hits. This way you held your course and all your buddies gave theirs away.

    • @GaetanoCrisci
      @GaetanoCrisci 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@annesmit112 in very low winds the main problem is keep the glide on the water, if you go slow at the same time you sink, in kiting there are many variables more than sail boat so at the end in veri light winds you can almost only sail abeam

    • @annesmit112
      @annesmit112 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@GaetanoCrisci All that matters is keeping your ground. You prevent sinking by keeping tension on lines and board by steering the kite. Just dont try to ride glide too much and wait for the next gust. Try it.

  • @omanovitsh
    @omanovitsh 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Apparently what matters is picking the right point of sail. For a given point of sail, there is no advantage to slow down. Figuring out the best point of sail for a given wind speed is not easy though. In sailing you check the polar diagram but in kiteboarding we obviously don't have this luxury

    • @gethighwithmike
      @gethighwithmike  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Picking your point of sail implies picking your speed. I think that this video shows the relationship between speed and point of sail. The faster you ride, the more your point of sail shifts away from the wind

    • @omanovitsh
      @omanovitsh 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Mike ! Thank you for all your helpful videos !
      I'm sometimes scared of speed and slow down even when going broadside, that's why for me it helps to think in terms of point of sail.
      For most people, avoiding going fast while going upwind should be sufficient 🤟
