Even way back then at such a young age you could see the incredible screen presence of this great actress ..... when she is on screen nothing else matters ....... simply amazing. If I were the head of a movie studio I would have already signed her to a multi-movie deal. It's pretty obvious that Jodie Comer can do anything.
The entire thing has this feeling something is very wrong. Made me physically tense. Great acting by the 2 main actresses. Of course Jodie gives it her all. She never overacts. Superb.
I am just learning about your career before Killing Eve (the White Princes ...oh my goodness what a role and performance I am in awe ). You amaze me with the talent that you already have in this film with Ruth Gemmell. The (micro)expressions you have are such a delight to watch.I can so read between the lines because of it. The tension not spoken about is creeping up on me as I watch. You are truly gifted and I am so honored to have discovered you. Jodie I wish you a lifetime of enjoyment in what you do. Be, and always try and stay true to yourself whatever you choose. Thank you for sharing your talent. Wish you all you need to stay happy, Sandra
this whole movie is too good for hollywood and the message is strong, its prob why its not listed on imdb :( Letita wright and Jodie Comer are both extraordinary int his movie, and its not listed for either of them, they deserve so much credit here! Just saw Letita again in an episode of Black Mirror, she was great in that one, and ofc Jodie is amazing in whatever she makes as well! Loewe!
@shawn bla I think the main theme of the film is the sexist education girls receive regarding sex, and the impact this education has on their experiences and identity. That's where Hanna's suffering comes from seeing her best friend lose her virginity to a random boy; Ideas such as female virginity is sacred, or the criminalization of female desire and pleasure (a girl is a slut if she enjoys having sex) are the trigger of the conflict which both protagonists struggle whith, particularly Hanna. That's why is so meaningful Gemma lose her virginity, it helps to illustrate the all conflict.
Hello Jodi, I have just seen this beautiful short film when you were just 20 years old. And as a young girl you show that you are a great actress. I know you for the tv series Killing Eve, which is a great success and well deserved have you two -Sandra and you- those awards. I ask that each video or interviews that you place, be with subtitles, like this one, because the ones of the automatic translator does not exist and if it exists it is terrible. Thank you very much for your attention and I thank God for having been able to meet you as an actress that you are and a very good person ....
I just watched this twice through and I believe the reason Hannah is returning to Sierra Leone is for the coming-of-age tradition/ceremony of female circumcision. There is that one scene where her mother is telling her that her grandmother's mother, her grandmother, and she had had it. Then Hannah asks if it hurts and she said "a little bit." I think this is the reason for the title "Big Girl."
Gemma is to be head bridesmaid when her mother Lynn marries her partner Paul and they both tell her she looks a 'big girl' in her pink dress. On the eve of the wedding she meets Hannah, once her best friend at school though the girls have been estranged for six months, each blaming the other. Hannah is to return to her native Sierra Leone next day but will not say why and refuses to get drunk and have sex with boys along with Gemma though they part on good terms. As the wedding day dawns Gemma realizes that Hannah is returning to Sierra Leone for the ritual of female circumcision and, in her pink dress, rushes to stop her, thus reuniting her with her erstwhile best friend.
Why do I feel like Hannah was secretly in love with Gemma? Does anyone else feel that? And I get the sense that there was this silent acknowledgement between the two of them that Gemma knew, or at least thought that it could be the case. Hannah was upset with her, and I don't think it was simply for Gemma getting her into trouble at school. There must have been a reason why she mentioned that she was a lesbian and seemed so hurt when her friend had sex with a random boy just for the sake of it. She was jealous and she also hated the fact that Gemma didn't seem to know her own worth. I think that in the end, Gemma realised that the feelings weren't one-sided. She was forced to acknowledge her own feelings when faced with the reality that Hannah was leaving. That's just my initial reading anyway watching this through once. I could just feel so much tension between them, something heavy....
I don't think the purpose of this film is romantic. I think the main theme is the sexist education girls receive regarding sex, and the impact this education has on their experiences and identity. That's where Hanna's suffering comes from seeing her best friend lose her virginity to a random boy; Ideas such as female virginity is sacred, or the criminalization of female desire and pleasure (a girl is a slut if she enjoys having sex) are the trigger of the conflict which both protagonists struggle with, particularly Hanna.
@@IndraniLk ...... Same here I never heard it!! .......At 12:34 the young man asks her if she is "Muslim" ..... but he says it in such a weird way that I think some people thought he said lesbian. Either way, I feel she did not want to leave because she has been in love with Gemma for years.
