    I learned this when I began boxing when I was younger and brought it to LARP, then to HEMA when I was done with LARP’s stupid rules and I decided I wanted to sit at the big boy’s table 🤣 it obviously takes a bit of transition to go from voiding movements in a fist fight to voiding incoming sword attacks, but the muscle memory for this technique is one of the most transferable to almost any contact sport or sparring bout… “dont get hit, but dont leave yourself so open that you get hit on the follow-up either” 😂

    Obviously its still a game, but the dodge movements in God of War, the newer ones, are really good because they're small movements and they make more sense than these big wide dodges we get in a lot of games. They're much more akin to voids.

  • @BarsusDraco
    @BarsusDraco 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Deflecting is also an great option. Requires quite some movement, but when done correctly, and when you're quick and cunning enough, you can perform an attack before your opponent can recover his posture. This is great on one-handed, shorter blades when fighting two-handed, longer blades. Since structured parrying is risky when a blade is longer and has leaverage from the second hand, deflecting works best.
    I am a huge fan of one-handed falchons and sideswords, and deflecting was always my best way to deal with two-handed swords. However, the void is still safer. But deflecting is higher reward, higher risk.

  • @pavelmatusu4457
    @pavelmatusu4457 หลายเดือนก่อน

    In kendo we quite often dodge by side stepping or back stepping a bit and the swords are even faster. But that's practical mainly if you predict his attack and you start the motion before the oponent swings his sword, usually you follow up by immediately closing the distance and a quick strike.
    If you don't have a lot of time voiding is better.

      He's just pointing out that you need to use your weapon and your body together because you can move the weapon faster than the rest of your body, my Jujutsu and recently my HEMA instructor have always told me that you can move your weapon faster than your body and your body faster than your feet

      @@valandil7454 "Void" in the vocab I'm familiar with means to take the body part being attacked and move it out of the way. A leg void, for example, means pulling it back, out of reach.

    Can you talk about how effective shields can be in this situation, defending on the size of the shield you're using it can cover most of your body from most attacks leaving the only exposed parts being your sword arm and leg, one of the techniques i learned for protecting the leg was to either duck down, causing the shield to cover your leg or alternatively raise the leg to be behind the shield. Bith are equally effective but I've always wondered how effective the leg raise would be as for a moment you're losing contact with the ground and makes it possible for your opponent to charge into your shield and knock you over

I admit against an overblown or out of measure attack it might work but you'd have to read the attack right and it would be safer/easier to keep your sword between you and the opponent. Though if you are using a thrusting only weapon like Olympic foil a proper dodge goes a long way as it’ll take a long time for them to bring their blade all the way back for another thrust giving you time to attack, alternatively you could do the backwards Michael Jackson on your tippy toes with the reach-around though you might get a bit tangled if you’re doing electrics.
    Edit: I just realized that anyone who isn’t an experienced fencer will understand none of this but it’s quite hard to explain the backwards Michael Jackson on your tippy toes with the reach-around until it’s happened to you at least once.
