It's one thing to know the number in an intellectual way, billions and trillions, but to see those numbers displayed in such a visceral relatable way makes all the difference for many of us. He did a great job of doing that.
He did though. He said the distance between our Milky Way and our nearest galactical neighbour on that scale was a ruler length which is about 300mm. That's why he just poured them on top of each other because even with the space between removed it's still mind boggling. That's kinda the whole point he was illustrating. Thanks for your help though.
Yeah, same here. These 355 pools left me speechless. Holy sh*t, our complete existence is waaaaaaayyyy less than nothing! You have to deal with it. Very grounding. Thank you. 😉

I have autism and am absolutely obsessed with space. This is the first time I could conceptualize the galaxies and I almost cried. Thank you so much for animating this. Your videos are now my most favorite thing in the universe. I appreciate how long this video must have taken to make, let alone all your channel. You have a subscriber for life.
Cosmologist here. Beautiful video; thanks for sharing! At 8:52 I was *really* hoping we'd be able to see the cosmic web at this point; I think you really missed out on a golden opportunity there to talk about the structure of galaxies out there. It's not just white noise; there's a *structure* to the galaxies we see on the sky!! They look like a vast, neural network, something akin to a brain or a sponge. Would've been cool to see, but I get that would've been immensly more work to program up.
Thanks! You can see some of the web in the 10km sphere as I’m flying through it, branching and flowing, however I don’t think you’d see any of it at the end of the video. The Universe (as I understand it) is quite uniform when viewed in totality, especially in the visible light spectrum when dark matter isn’t highlighted, you’re right that you might see a little bit of the ‘webiness ’ as the zoom starts and you sort of see that as a noise pattern but it soon disappears to be lost in sea of low resolution when viewed as a human, where thousands of galaxies of the deep field is only a couple of cones or ‘pixels’ of our eye in visual acuity. Glad you enjoyed it otherwise and keep up the amazing work!
@@EpicSpaceman But looking at images you'd get when searching for "Galaxy filament" it is not uniform. It seems to me that depending on where you look you could be looking at a big cluster (with even more overlapping galaxies than in the Deep Space photos) or a relatively empty area (with, perhaps, less), so you'd get different densities of galaxies and thus levels of brightness in the sky, making the light vary in threads instead of looking like an uniform cloudy day. Right? The question is how big and how many filaments there are, or whether the areas humanity imaged happened to be areas with less or more density. I'm not an astronomer so I have no idea of how close we are at answering these questions. But it'd be awesome to see that approximated in the simulation, making a new skybox based on one of those filament images where you superimpose more deep space galaxies in the brighter areas and (perhaps) spread them apart in the darker areas. This could be confidently simulated if we had deep space photos of half the sky. Some day! Also, congratulations on the _incredible_ quality of videos you consistently produce. I haven't seen anyone come close!
I expected the one pool getting filled up but when you showed the actual number of pools needed I got tears in my eyes. I knew about the 200 billion galaxies but you made me feel that number and it is overwhelming.
Thank you! It’s really important to me that the numbers make sense and can be tangible because as soon as you get into millions and billions they lose all meaning to me normally
@@EpicSpacemanHello, really appreciate your job. Don't you think it's just impossible that we're only one in the universe? I think till year 2500, we will find thousands of signs of life out there.
@@EpicSpaceman and you nailed it. most people including me, have a hard time understanding what a billion means. For example, if you make 100K $/€ per year (which is pretty much. for me at least) and save it all. How wonderful, thank you! That’s really the ultimate compliment for me, helping people get to that feeling of child-like awe that’s hard to find as we get older
Wow. Just, wow. The final visualization really brings it all home. Some people feel nihilistic dread when confronted by the enormity of the universe. I feel hope and awe.
Same, some scifi writers may think of aliens as hostile but I say so what? With so many galaxies out there, there may well be more species of them than bacteria in our own oceans, with highly diversified forms, biology, and psychology. Some of them being hostile doesn't cancel out the sheer possibility and beauty of it.
At just over 4 minutes in, I was thinking, "Bravo! This was a great video!" And then after another 11 minutes, I was like, "What I thought before was, perhaps, the greatest understatement I could say about anything."
Thank you! This was an awesome comment to read, I'm so pleased that you felt the video got even better after that first 'reveal', makes all the effort worth it
@@EpicSpaceman I appreciate the reply! And I definitely appreciate your effort. Every scene was packed. Just the pool scene was enough to impress me...and that was just a small part of the whole! (And I know there's so much I didn't notice, which also required effort.) Thanks again! 👍
Thank you for this video! This is AWESOME and mind-blowing to see the scale described, organized, and animated in such a clear and entertaining way. I seriously appreciate it lol
You seriously make some of the best content there is (can u do a magic school bus/ inside our body type video?) It fascinates me that when we look around & see all of this complexity throughout the Universe. This complexity basically comes from: ~{"Differences"}~ Differences seem to be a key factor to keep dynamic systems functioning. Just look at: *{High pressure/low pressure, hot/cold temperatures, different densities, viscosities, turbulent flow, static electric charges/discharges, +/- electromagnetism, different frequencies of photon's, different velocity/angular momentum, different amounts of energy/mass/vibrations. Different boundary layers between different regions such as: (Land/water/air/layers of the atmosphere/space/ the different regions in space with different particle density/background radiation, solar wind/membrane layers/bubble's/surface tension/cloud regions, nebula's/Galaxy's/Galaxy clusters/ Cosmic filaments/less dense regions of space compared to dense regions of space.) All of these things are basic differences but create a way for the dynamic engine with-in Nature to continue flowing and operating to create and convert energy.} Just Like How a battery 🔋 transfers + charges through a membrane layer to a - charged side. Like how regions of high/low temperature 🌡️ create winds. In water- add some factors and It creates ocean currents and flow. Then internally inside our planet it creates plate tectonics, planetary convection, geothermal activity, a magnetic field around our planet, to hold a atmosphere. The list goes on 🧲🌡️📡🔆☢️🔌🔊🔋♻️🌐☯️⚛️ The natural world around us is utterly facinating.
I'm 38. I first watched Carl Sagan when I was in community college. I saw an episode of Cosmos in my basement. I was so fascinated not only by all the unbelievable things he was showing me, but the way he made my brain stretch to see the beauty and wonder in the universe. I watched all the rest of the episodes, then read every book he had ever written, watched every video I could find of him and of the people who knew him, such as his wife Ann Druyan. I get that same feeling when I watch your videos. I can definitely see the influence of Carl Sagan in your videos and your thinking. Thanks for being so awesome.
Just thinking, of people saying there are no aliens, Man with this video it just confirms that there is alien life, statistically speaking!! Maybe not in our galaxy, but in 1 of these swimming pools!!

Being an astro-fan boy I knew these concepts in words...but oh man you have an incredible talent for making them an image in my mind. Thank you. Kindest regards from Scotland.
I misread "astro-fan boy" as "Astro Boy fan" and it made me flash back to the 2003 anime series episode where Astro meets an alien after receiving a sort of "help" signal that only he could hear, and it shows him beyond what his civilization knows, then thanks him for his kindness and says they will meet again.
Yes! That was the scene where my brain went, "................................................................................................................................................................................. riiiiiiiiiighhhhht"
This is an amazing way to visualize space. I was already aware that there are billions of galaxies out there, but to see it visualized like this gives me a better perspective of just how immense and amazing it is. Thank you.
It's just mind boggling to know that in our galaxy alone there are 11 billion planets like earth... So I think there must be life out there somewhere in the vast desert of this unimaginable universe😮
universe? try couple light years. every galaxy alone probably has over a million species of life conscious or just microbial. we just haven’t discovered anybody yet.
This made me see life in a whole new light. After realizing how small we are , It made me stop taking things so seriously. Just seeing things from such a broad perspective gave me a sense of relief. I don’t even know how to explain it but I’m glad he was able to put the universe into a perspective that we all can understand
Fun fact: 9:01 the color of the sky here is called "cosmic latte." It was the result of astronomers at John Hopkins University averaging together the colors of all galaxies and stars and nebulas in the sky, so it really is the exact color the sky would be if there was no darkness.
Isn't this a more modern take on Olbers' Paradox? Why isn't the night sky evenly lit by the countless numbers of stars out there? Well, the sky is indeed lit by countless stars, gathered in virtually countless galaxies, if we would care to actually have them illuminate our means of observation.
I saw your video for the first time, and I liked it, subscribed, turned on notifications for future videos, and shared it with my colleagues. Then, I went on to watch all your previous videos. I love your work, Boss. I appreciate the hard work you put into making these videos. They are amazing.
I do disagree with you on 1 thing: To say that this channel plays an important part in helping people better understand the universe and do so in a very unique and interesting way. That.. might just be the biggest understatement ever! Looking forward to your next video!
I just did the math with Chatgpt, based off of the Hubble Deep Field, and... if you hold your hand out at arms length, there are about 75,000 -90,000 galaxies in the size of your thumbnail.
Nice! This is why it looks like cloud, the ‘resolution’ of our eyes can’t handle 80,000 dots in such a small space, it will even itself out into relatively uniform ‘pixels’
Simply mesmerizing! I also can't get over the fact that it takes light 93 billion years to travel across the universe, and if you were going that speed, the trip would seem instantaneous from your perspective.
Observable universe. Also it's now literally impossible for light to ever get from one side to the other as the expansion of the universe is now faster than light speed alone
I genuinely feel on the verge of tears whenever I watch one of your videos. It's like a feeling of pressure in the blood vessels in my face and brain that makes me want to break out of the shackles my mind imposes on comprehension and just float in enlightenment for things we can't even begin to perceive. the 355 swimming pool reveal destroyed me, and I already know a good bit about astronomy
It's one thing to know the number in an intellectual way, billions and trillions, but to see those numbers displayed in such a visceral relatable way makes all the difference for many of us. He did a great job of doing that.
@@Stewkers I was thinking “oh yeah the pool will be filled that makes sense” then the reveal hit lmao I was not ready
@@gravitygames4495and he didn't mention inter galactic space between galaxies .
Its still much bigger than 355 pools
He did though. He said the distance between our Milky Way and our nearest galactical neighbour on that scale was a ruler length which is about 300mm. That's why he just poured them on top of each other because even with the space between removed it's still mind boggling. That's kinda the whole point he was illustrating. Thanks for your help though.
Yeah, same here. These 355 pools left me speechless. Holy sh*t, our complete existence is waaaaaaayyyy less than nothing! You have to deal with it. Very grounding. Thank you. 😉
When i clicked the thumbnail, my plan was to get the brief idea about this and end the watch in 5 min or less.
But now, i'm watching this over and over again😅 everything about this video is just PERFECT.
I think you were able to bring back my space enthusiastic persona that was buried by all those garbage fb,insta and yt videos long time ago........... THANK YOU 🖤
Love this comment, thanks so much, I’m so pleased you felt I could bring back some of that love for space

The number of stars in the universe vastly outnumber the amount of seconds that have passed since the beginning of time.

It's like becoming a kid again! 👍
I teared up a little when you panned out and showed us not one, but 300 swimming pools. It’s just overwhelming.
Yes the threads
The universe is a big brain 🧠
Criminally underrated channel and as usual - WOW!
(no interests blabla) you have a million $/€ in 10 years. pretty nice huh. But it takes you 10000 years to make a billion. Now take that times 200 ;-) Awesome videos E>

How wonderful, thank you! That’s really the ultimate compliment for me, helping people get to that feeling of child-like awe that’s hard to find as we get older
💯
Wow.
I feel nihilistic optimism.

You seriously make some of the best content there is (can u do a magic school bus/ inside our body type video?)
It fascinates me that when we look around & see all of this complexity throughout the Universe. The list goes on

The natural world around us is utterly facinating.
Fun side fact, it was miscalculated to be a pale turquoise at first.

if you hold your hand out at arms length, there are about 75,000 -90,000 galaxies in the size of your thumbnail.
Nice! This is why it looks like cloud, the ‘resolution’ of our eyes can’t handle 80,000 dots in such a small space, it will even itself out into relatively uniform ‘pixels’
