Isn't this a more modern take on Olbers' Paradox? Why isn't the night sky evenly lit by the countless numbers of stars out there? Well, the sky is indeed lit by countless stars, gathered in virtually countless galaxies, if we would care to actually have them illuminate our means of observation.

Thank you! Will be great to have you over there! Sims are super taxing and I avoid them at all costs haha! For the water in Antarctica I think I used an ocean plugin rather than the ocean modifier but it kept going wrong so the most consistent shots were when I just used some animated noise textures with normal and displacement, much less taxing and still looked good. If you watch my video on the Milky Way and I’m on the black beach in Iceland the water rolling up in the beach there I think looks really good and that’s a video texture used as displacement from some top down stock drone footage.
@@EpicSpaceman Well crap, thats why I love channels and videos like yours, I keep learning new tricks hah. You are incredibly good at communicating unimaginably difficult concepts...concepts that, for almost all of our planet's population, are unimaginably difficult to comprehend.
@@EpicSpaceman Loved it! Just one clarification about that never before seen grey visualisation. Is it the light of every galaxy hitting us shown at once?
No joke, I am wearing my Planetary Society t-shirt as I write this! Okay, ya got me with, "It doesn't stop here." Then the camera pulls back, "It actually takes 350 of these swimming pools." Yeah, that got me. lol. I was *not* expecting that. And to think every one of those galaxies has hundreds of millions of stars and each star could have several planets orbiting them...? The scale of the universe is incomprehensible. And that's just the _observable_ universe. For all we know, it goes on like that into infinity. What a fantastic video.
I just did the math with Chatgpt, based off of the Hubble Deep Field, and... if you hold your hand out at arms length, there are about 75,000 -90,000 galaxies in the size of your thumbnail.
Nice! This is why it looks like cloud, the ‘resolution’ of our eyes can’t handle 80,000 dots in such a small space, it will even itself out into relatively uniform ‘pixels’

This is absolutely awe inspiring. Science fact > science fiction
Lets fucking go
Haha! Indeed!
@@EpicSpacemanAmazing as always, one day I hope to make films half as good
That panning shot of stars lighting the night sky transitioning into the city lights of night time on earth with you sitting on the Hubble telescope was pure art. I love your channel.
Fantastic as always. Congratulations on the sponsorship!🎉
Thank you! Really proud of that!
This channel has been my best discovery of the year. Such inspiring content!
Cheers from Brazil 💚
I thought my mind was already boggled, and then I watch Epic Spaceman and I realise it wasn't, but it sure is now.
Glad I could help with the boggling!
Always a highlight of my day watching a new video of you before going to bed. I love them.
I’m so pleased!
Quality channel - mind boggling numbers somehow brought down to a scale that makes sense
Thank you! That’s definitely my main aim, make the tricky stuff make sense visually for anyone
Every now and then, you stumble across a truly talented individual on TH-cam. I'm so happy I found this channel.
I would love to be able to sit beside you and watch how you make your videos. Absolutely amazing, literally the best channel on TH-cam.
Thank you! I’ll do a bit more of a making-of at some point soon
as an avid space lover myself seeing your videos pop up is the best way to start the day.
Incredible work. So glad I found your channel.
Thank you.
So pleased to have you here!
It's all quite literal. As a kid, Fruit Loops did make me see the galaxies 😄
This video is clear proof that we are not alone in the universe. The sheer scale of possibility out there is mind-blowing. Our tiny human brains just can't comprehend how much stuff is out there! Kudos to Epic Spaceman his videos are amazing! I am sharing this to anyone I know!
Like the Oracle said, we ARE alone in the universe. There are others, but they're alone too.
Thanks for the hard work!
You’re very much welcome!
From everything to the pacing, direction, and descriptions, to the incredible, stunning effort in the VFX to show all of this, it really shows how much time, effort, dedication, and care you put into crafting this video. Having come back after watching through some of your other videos already, your inspired view and presentation is absolutely first rate and I look forward to everything you make into the future. This was absolutely breathtaking.
EoicSpaceman what a BRILLIANT film. Thank you ❤
At 4k you can see the texture of the cereal. The visuals match the information.. Mind-blowing. I do believe I'm going to watch this again. I bet i see something I missed the first time. Crazy detail, everywhere in everything. This is a great video.
It’s stunning on my phone - 4k must be wild!
Unbelievable! Looking forward to something about big bang someday!
Once upon a time all those galaxies were compressed into a point smaller than this .
I am in awe and perplexed by everything in this video.
As a Blender fanatic specialising in water sims I am especially impressed by the quality and management of how you applied it to the video.
Ill see you on your Patreon
Im deeply impressed at the quality of what you make, it is easily some of the best educational video being made right now.
Excuse me while im off to he Milky Way video and a bunch of tutorials ;)
Popcorn ready ❤
🍿🤩
I knew that 1 pool would be inadequate but I was not even remotely prepared for how inadequate it would be. I wonder what kind of being could actually comprehend such magnitude... a terrifying thought.
Please keep making videos. The work you do truly is special. Thank you.
Thank you! Yeah I think I guessed it would have been more than a pool but I did have to check my maths a few times on 355 as that is A LOT haha
“You are wrapped in the light…” 09:30🎤drop, Epic Spaceman!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed my wording there, I like to think of the Universe as warmer and more enveloping now because of this, rather than cold and black. I just try not to think about the space between the stars or the distances haha
Beautifully said! I felt the same-thank you for shortening the distance in an unforgettable way!
beyond epic. so much gratitude for your work
11:30 I don't know why this isn't common knowledge, that just completely IGNITED my curiosity and drive to explore, I haven't felt this romantic wonder and determination for a long time.
How wonderful, thank you! I think there’s lots of amazing things in science that make me say ‘wow, I really feel like everyone should know this’ and that’s a big part of why I make these videos
As an amateur blender artist, I cannot believe the effort that went into making this video! Props to you! The scriptwriting was also amazing and this is probably the best TH-cam video I have ever watched.
Your videos always blow my mind thank you
Thank you!
Hands down the best TH-cam channel out there. I am absolutely willing to wait months for a new video if it means getting something of this caliber. Each time a video drops, it’s an EVENT.
Best commercial I ever watched. Planetary Society made a good investment here.
You are incredibly good at communicating unimaginably difficult concepts...concepts that, for almost all of our planet's population, are unimaginably difficult to comprehend.
Another banger video on the way ❤️
I hope you feel so!
I fucking love this channel
Thank you! So pleased to have you here
I just did the math with Chatgpt, based off of the Hubble Deep Field, and...
if you hold your hand out at arms length, there are about 75,000 -90,000 galaxies in the size of your thumbnail.
Nice! This is why it looks like cloud, the ‘resolution’ of our eyes can’t handle 80,000 dots in such a small space, it will even itself out into relatively uniform ‘pixels’
*This screams the creation of an infinite Creator without bonderies*
You're right, I've NEVER seen that kind of visualization before. This is so good! Thank you!
RxK Nephew: I'm like, "How the fuck-? Hold on, which telescope and what person count that with they eyes?"
Epic Spaceman:
Haha! Sometimes the ‘how’ of how we know things is just as interesting
These videos have always been an incredible part of the day when you post. What a sponsor moment too! You could tell you were genuinely proud to announce the planetary society as a sponsor. Keep up the amazing work!
Epic Spaceman has hands down the best visualization on yt and at the same time is as accurate as possible, that's just incredible.
the production level and the science communication skills are incredible. What an experience.
