I wash once a day, just before bedtime, with Cerave oil cleanser. I use sunscreen every day, but rarely wear makeup. The sunscreen is not water resistant and comes off easily with just the Cerave. I'll be 77 this November, and my thin, sensitive, elderly skin has never been better, thanks to watching Dr. Dray and following her advice. Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge, Dr. Dray.
FINALLY!!!!! Thank you dr Dray to stop this nonsense. Influencers often create these trends for content and they don’t realize they might hurt some of their followers.
@@oceaneo4603 agree with you, but not everybody knows how to make their own researches and they trust influencers coming up with some loose “scientific mechanisms”.
As much as that’s true, everyone’s skin is different and people seem to forget this fact. I never used to wash my face with a cleanser either nor did I ever used to use any skincare in general until 2012 when I went to MUA school. Now I’m soon 36. Never had acne prone skin or skin issues in general until I actually started using skincare… my partner is basically 50, and he has little to no wrinkles and he too doesn’t really use skincare. I force him to use sunscreen besides moisturizer, as he’s white and of Celtic ancestry who are the most prone to develop Rosacea, and skin cancer. Ironically I got Rosacea after starting using skincare my self. I didn’t even struggle with acne when in puberty. A zit on or around my nose whenever I ate junk/sugar. That’s it. Regretting it now to say the least. That I even started it in the 1st place. From the nature side of things, the skin takes care of it self. Depending on your skin type, and climate some won’t even need a moisturizer. Only thing I’d say is necessary for certain people are sunscreen.
My dad has only ever rinsed his face with water. He's never put anything else on it before. Not moisturizer, not sunscreen, not soap. Never had a pimple in his life that I know of, and he's 88. Meanwhile I take excellent care of my skin and I break out if someone looks at me wrong 🤪
My husband is the typical man that refuses to have a skincare routine. He just showers, uses a 2 in 1 shampoo and doesn’t even bother with lotion. This man has beautiful skin and has not aged at all. Meanwhile, my oily, textured skin cannot go one day without washing my face at least once a day. I have tried using just water in the morning and was able to get away with that as long as I don’t use heavy products the night before. Otherwise, I use a gentle cleanser in the morning and a foaming cleanser at night. I think genetics do play a role here for sure
Genetics and life style. Most men I encounter that have seemingly flawless skin with no skincare routine are very physically active. Regarding biology, men have on average more thicker skin and more collagen than women. So it isn't all too crazy why men often have great skin while having horrible skin habits.
Same! My bf has the nicest skin, he just splashes it with like 2 drops of water and doesn’t use anything. Flawless and poreless. If I did that my skin would be so clogged and gross. His skin tone is also so even and clear whereas mine gets blotchy. Somehow he thinks I’m the prettier one.
I've got mine using everything, but he always did like products. His mom bought Pert Plus for the family, and he would sneak his sister's expensive salon shampoo😂
@@sowhat1674 we’re Mexican so he eats very hearty, traditional Mexican meals that I cook from scratch for him. I definitely make sure he’s well fed lol. He doesn’t work out because he has two jobs, though he does do a lot of walking at his main job so I suppose he is getting a workout there. His sleep could be better, he wakes up at 3:30am to start work at 5am and like I said he has two jobs so usually goes to bed around 9. So yeah, it’s definitely genetics 😂 it’s all good tho I’m not hating my hubs looks good 😊 lol
I try not to wash my face in the morning, but having rosacea it makes my redness worse by not washing it, and my oily skin needs a good washing 2x a day.
I have rosacea which is now under control due to oracea, a low dose antibiotic. It took a while, but now my face looks normal. I also use topical prescription azalaic acid.
I have rosacea with intolérante skin and for me no washing with cleanser , only water the morning, I used cleansing oil for remove make up and after micellar water I rinse it all , and my skin is better
I have rosacea and I dont double cleanse or use oils. I only wash one time a day w a gentle cleanser while showering in evening, and splash cool water on face in mornings & pat dry. Works great for me😊
I'm going through a really weird phase with my skin. I hit menopause recently and all of a sudden my face doesn't like double cleansing or anything that leaves a film. I have dry, sensitive type 1 rosacea. So, I'm using Aveeno calm and restore oat cleanser, a moisturizer immediately after and that's it.
That is what works for me as well. Washing too much of your face also removes the natural oils of the skin that protect and can aggravate some skin conditions. But, everyone is different..
thats what I use aveeno C&R no fragrance & niacinamide after cleanser. Try washing once a day and see if that helps. If I wash twice a day it just aggravates my rosacea
I've rarely used cleanser on my face. I washed my face with warm water every morning. That's it. I never had issues, very few breakouts even in teen years. Only started using a cleanser and moisturizing after washing as I got older (50+). I do use better products these days though thanks to you Dr Dray.
Since I work from home I wash my face every other day unless I’m wearing makeup I’ve noticed my skin is less irritated and less acne prone.. it works for me 🙌🏼
Unicorn🤣 I can’t go even half a day wo washing my face. Too much oil and I also have perioral dermatitis-for myself-not washing my face will make my skin horrible. Been there. Tried it. Didn’t work for my skin😝
I wash mine even less than that. At most, I rub a dry cloth over my face before doing my makeup. I may use a bit of micellar water in my lashes, but never more. I don’t need foundation or powder, so there’s nothing on my skin like that. My skin is very clear. I only WASH-wash it maybe once every couple weeks. Even in the shower, I don’t apply soap to my face. When I washed it all the time like I thought I was supposed to, it broke out a lot. Cystic bad. I’m so glad I personally stopped. My poor daughter is the opposite though. :(
I have depression so sometimes I will go several days without washing my face. And it shows. My skin looks dirty and dull. Sometimes it will start itching. Sometimes it will start burning. Since I have eczema I use a very, very gentle non-foaming cleanser and Cerave. If I'm having an allergic reaction or an outbreak I use Avene. That's it. No serums, no masks. My face can't take a lot of product. I mean I'd love a serum but destroying my skin isn't worth the risk.
I never have had skin or hair problems. I have used Toleriane gentle cleanser for years, because I felt other cleansers were too drying. Since listening to you I have learned ALOT. Thank you. I now double cleanse at night. As to my hair - unicorn - If I am not swimming or doing extreme sport, I wash it about 2x a month. I don't feel I need to do more. My scalp is always healthy and I have abundant hair down to my middle back and I am going on 73. I feel very fortunate, but I am vigilant and listen to you every day.
Not too long ago, I was told how beautiful my skin is and I don’t need to ruin it by washing my face every day. Although flattered, it doesn’t take much effort to wash my face twice a day and it’s probably the reason I have decent skin. so as you said, everything is not for everybody. Great info once again. Thank you 😊
Often during depression episodes every month or so I don't wash my face at all for 2-3 days rather I use all my willpower to apply Sunscreen & honestly I don't get as bad pimples I used to get back in teenage... I think the cumulative positive effect of skincare from rest of the month plus sunscreen is what saves my skin during this!
What's "gross" exactly? The fact that the original poster gets regular bouts of severe depression which make it like hard work to do ANYTHING or the fact that face washing is one of the things that falls by the way side during these episodes? OR is "gross" referring to your commenting without exercising the grey matter inside your head??? @@janecoe9407
It is neither gross or wrong. I have gone a couple dys. of not washing my face, when my skin barrier has been impaired. Then I return to my normal routine after it is better. I applaud your efforts during those difficult times. I’m sure you look just fine. Take care
I dont want to make the rule of my case, but I dont wash my face, appart from water. I have very dry skin, so no washes, no make up. Well, in the very seldom event of having wear some make up, which again, i almost never do, or very heavy SPF, then I use a very gentle wash. And I notice the dryness on the following days. My skin looks clear and fine. Better since I stopped washing. Like I say, it is just my case.
@Dr Dray I appreciate the realism (and subtle humor/sarcasm briefly at the beginning) in this video and that you still accept that some “unicorns” may be able to skip face washing but the rest of us realistically still need to take this important step. I like that you recognize there are some lucky folks out there who are being honest about their skincare practices, but their routine isn’t necessarily the right one for everyone.
Yes, I love that Dr. Dray mentioned the Unicorns being the exception to the rule. It’s usually the Unicorns that can do this and the majority are duped into thinking they can but is not good practice for them. If I don’t wash my face my skin gets congested! Also, I NEED to wash the drool, sleep, possible sweat, and any microscopic debris from my face. Ugh! I can’t imagine not doing this. Lol! 😂 Same thing about not moisturizing. I’d turn into ash and crack if I didn’t hydrate and moisturize. And don’t talk about eczema. And in winter! Good Lor’!! 😳
Maybe the enviroment is more polluted. My dad skin is so nice. He never had a pimple and his skin always look normal, never oily or dry. However I do not win the genes lotto and I have the most sensitive skin ever. Skipping face wash would be equal to having really bad acne. But when I use face wash, toner and a light serum my skin condition is pretty stable 😭
At most, I rub a dry washcloth on mine, and that’s it. My skin is very clear. I actually feel bad for people who either wash twice a day or else they get break-outs. My daughter is one of them-her pores get so clogged soooooo easily.
Good Afternoon Dr Dray . Thank you for your videos. I am a fan of cleansing. I have simplified my routine massively over the years. Thanks to you I’ve incorporated sunscreen into my routine and can see the benefits. The whole cleansing regime is something that I enjoy and do for myself.
Off topic: my eye Doctor recommended I use a eye cleansing pad to wash my eyelids. It removes allergens and other debris from my eye lashes that otherwise can’t be cleaned properly. Doing this helps with dry eyes.
Truth be told I only double cleanse at night before I go to bed and I do that religiously whether I am wearing makeup or not. In the morning I just use water on my face and rinse it really good in the shower and a toner and then proceed with my skin care routine and my face is thriving. I have adopted this routine for my body too because I love showering 2x daily but it was drying out my skin. So at night is a full scrub down and then moisturizing and in the morning just rinse off but only hit my intimate areas with soap and my skin has improved drastically plus it has cut my shower time in the morning in half. My skin is doing so much better and I am still getting the benefits of getting myself clean without damaging my skin.
I’ve always had problems with face wash. Had oily skin, had makeup to remove, but it always bothered my skin. Even when I switched to a cleansing balm for my first step, the second step cleanser always annoyed my skin. That’s newly 40 years of a poor annoyed face. I listened to your skincare recs and tried Cerave hydrating cleanser. For the first time since my teens my skins is ok. Only residual redness now, no new redness or dry patches. I really appreciate it.
I think the environment you live in plays a huge part. If the air is clean your skin will be too, if there is pollution you’ll need to wash. Also, you need to give your skin the opportunity to decrease oil production gradually. The more frequently you cleanse, the more oil your skin produces to replace what is lost so reducing the frequency gradually allows the skin to adjust. The same goes for washing your hair. I wash my hair once a week and exfoliate in the shower the same day. I cleanse my face if I’ve been wearing makeup, if my face feels greasy I swab with micellar water. This has been my routine for the past 30 years, I’m 60 and have unblemished, wrinkle free skin and thick, glossy hair but that’s just me. Find a routine which suits you but don’t just suddenly stop cleansing,.
My daughter wanted to start wearing a little concealer under her eyes and eyeshadow; I told her it was also necessary to cleanse it off. When she started a gentle cleanser and bland moisturizer, she started getting irritation that looked like acne all over her forehead, chin, and sides of her nose. We stopped everything and her skin is healing. I couldn’t do that, I’ve tried, without the same happening to me! So for now, nothing for her and she is happy.
@helenadosul I think we will try that next! Just using a micellar. Thank you! My local Walmart has Bioderma Sensibio micellar now so I think I’ll get her some of that. She just uses the Elf Hydrating Camo concealer.
@@ashlynnkaplan680I like the Elf holy hydration cleanser and fragrance-free moisturizer. I never know when dyes, fragrances, or a new product will give me a reaction, but these two products are okay. I also try to introduce only one product at a time. ❤
I definitely think the body reacts to the product you use. As someone who has oily skin, using a strong cleaners never helped. When I used cetaphil's gentle cleanser for an extended period my skin was finally manageable. Now I use cosrx low ph for a deeper cleanse but still stick to cetaphil gentle 3/4 times I was my face. When I moved away from using shampoo and stuck with using ACV for extended period of time I got to the point where I dont even need to shampoo, but still do once every 2 weeks. My hair is alot less oily and when it does build up some oil it's never excessive and actually makes it look healthier than ever. Be patient and the body will react
I’m a hairstylist. You only wash your hair once every 2 weeks?! 😖 I’ve had to wash people’s hair that didn’t wash it for weeks and the smell was like rotten tomatoes and the feel of the hair was so greasy. 🤢 There are so many dead skin cells, oil and loose hair that accumulates on the scalp/hair every few days that one should wash/scrub to get rid of.
I’ve had tinea versicolor a couple times from being sweaty all day while living in FL. I’d be soaked from the moment I left my house in the morning til I came home in the evening, so it didn’t matter if I showered twice daily. This is when I realized hot humid climates aren’t for me.
I have never heard such a detailed explanation of rosacea and the products that are prescribed to treat it! Wow! Dermatologists are known in the rosacea community as not understanding the role of the mites and we have to figure all of this out on our own. I am 33 and almost NEVER washed my face in my entire life. I was so sensitive to everything I would wash with, and if something worked for me it wouldn't last long- I determined that it was best to just skip it. This worked for me until I was close to 30 and had rosacea like you couldn't fathom!!!!!! I have been trying so hard to fix this for like 5 years now! I finally have a routine figured out and it includes washing twice a day with two different cleansers.
Hello fellow rosacea sufferer! Would you mind sharing which products are working for you? So far, the best and least irritating/inflammatory line I've found is Aveeno Calm & Restore oat-based cleanser & moisturiser, but it's still not perfect. And I still can't find a serum or oil or exfoliator that doesn't make me flaky and burn me tomato red!
@pendafen7405 I am a rosecea suffer, and I can share what I use. I use the new cerave facial oil cleanser.,and I use either their cerave lotion during summer months because it's light and during the winter I use their cream. Laroche Posa facial cleanser is another great gentle cleanser. I wash my face only at night. Hope this is helpful.
I’m quickly nearing 40. It took me a very long time dealing with improper products and awful hormonal breakouts… I still break out some, I finally found a system that works for me. Water only in the AM, and a salicylic acid cleanser in PM… I also stopped wearing makeup daily. PROFOUND difference for me.
I don’t wash my face, I never had a cleanser only micelar water for makeup. Ever since cerave cleanser destroyed my skin, giving me scarring acne. I can’t tolerate any cleanser, no matter how gentle. I only use micellar water and it is enough.
@@JayBobert-h1l it did, I cant use most of skincare because they break me out and breakouts give me scars. I have never experienced that before I mean scarring. Even products that I used before now I can’t tolerate and will break me out. It was years ago. So it is not a barrier problem. Also I didn’t believe that it was cerave since “it is so gentle” so I used it on my chest to see if I will break out, now I have acne on my chest when I didn’t have acne there before. It was like 4/5 years ago, allergic reactions don’t work that long ! I believe that cerave must have killed off some good bacteria on my skin, that was stopping formation of acne on my skin.
@@JayBobert-h1l yea, as I said before skincare doesn’t work for me after cerave. I just don’t understand what are you trying to do here, win an argument? Prove that you know better? Trying to be the one who is in the right? Fight over semantics? I have wrote my comment for people to know about cerave, I don’t want them to end up like me. On Reddit there are a lot of horror stories about cerave products. It is better for people to be informed about them. Is there a problem with it? I just don’t get what is your problem dude, trying to do hardly prove i am in the wrong. Chill a little, you are fighting over a cleanser.
@gab1888 The way you're completely missing the point I'm making......YOU being allergic to an ingredient in cerave doesn't make it a bad product and it doesn't give you the right to fear monger. Cerave caused your skin to not like any skincare? Girly that makes 0 sense
When I was 21 and met my bf, he told me not to wash my face and just like rinse it with water in the shower, so I tried it and.....no definitely need to wash my face with a cleanser I love Cetaphil and I use multiple toners and witch Hazel now as well as snail mucin, drink lots of water, and I'm so so happy I found ur channel!!! My routine has improved a tonnn
I've always washed my face twice a day and don't plan on stopping now. I've never had any issues doing so and can't imagine what my skin would look like if I didn't wash at all. Appreciate your opinion on this latest trend. Happy Halloween, Dr Dray! Hope you have a spooktacular evening. 🎃👻💕
Actually no. I wash with a salicylic cleanser in the morning and do a double cleanse with a cleansing balm and then Cerave cleansing oil in the evening. 😊
Before I became an avid sunscreen user, I was able to clean my face with just water and never had an issue. I only used a cleanser and an oil if I wore makeup. Now that I do wear sunscreen and reapply throughout the day, just water doesn’t cut it. Proper skin care def requires nightly cleansing 👏
did your skin ever get worse this way? I use to have clear skin and only used warm water & a washcloth once a day. When I began skincare for a few puberty pimples and from people pushing spf, my skin texture and tone has been worse.
I'm one of those people on the other end of the spectrum where if I don't wash my face 2x a day, I will _always_ experience a breakout where my face will be covered in smaller, red folliculitis-like bumps by the next evening that _usually_ go away after a few days of regular cleansing. *However,* I fell asleep once without cleansing (all I was wearing was that day's skincare) and went to bed with clear skin and woke up with a _intense_ infection all over the face that looked like 1:07 but also on the neck and behind the ears that could only be treated with antibiotics. While not washing the face at night is expected to result in more issues, I certainly was not prepared to such a severe and long-lasting reaction... I wish I knew 100% what caused it to be so severe
Twice a day for me. Developing and maintaining a consistent skin care routine has made a WORLD of difference for my skin - and my confidence, too. Before I found Dr Dray, my skin was a hot mess. A lifetime of skin-picking, cystic acne, rosacea, using hot water & harsh scrubs, no moisturizer, no sunscreen, ugh - I mean I had not one clue. It took me a while to sort out my Holy Grail products, especially finding sunscreens I didn't hate. Now and for the last five years, I've had a pampering and soothing daily self-care routine with astonishingly positive results. And it's very affordable too. My skin is soft, clear and glowing. Thank you a thousand times, Dr. Dray. Hugs Sam
I am one of those unicorns. I have cleansed my skin sporadically throughout my life, going through phases of twice daily to nothing for months besides shower water. I regularly fall asleep with makeup, almost never wash off sunscreen. Have a baby- like skin with maybe 10-15 pimples over my 50+ years of life. I do understand the importance of cleansing though:)
I will be 70 next year, and I have very fine textured skin with hardly any wrinkles. I don't get many compliments but, when I do, it's always about my skin. In the past, dermatologists always told me to use Dove unscented soap, so I do, either once or twice a day. I use moisturizer, day and night and always use sunscreen. Oh, and also foundation.
I don't wear make up at all. I only wash my face at night ( CeraVe hydrating face wash) and then I'd apply some light weight lotion. I found my skin to be very oily the next morning tho, I just use the oil absorbance sheet and that's it, I'm good for the rest of the day
Thank you. Always good information. For decades I have been using Cetaphil to clean my face. A few other products, but the feeling of Cetaphil is lovely and thorough. It has the bonus of not needing a lot (none) of rinsing, so my late mother also liked it when in hospital/hospice bedbound times.
I'm recovering from a nasty virus, on top of a different serious medical issue. I completely dropped most of my hygiene routine, including face washing, for several weeks. I have dry skin, and some of the meds I take make it even drier. So oil and acne were not a problem. However, my skin was not exfoliating properly ... I developed very rough textured skin, and even started peeling in some body areas. Once I felt better enough to resume my routine, things got better very quickly. I'm not back to normal quite yet - and winter low humidity has arrived where I live. But I'm looking, much, much better, and feel better, too. FYI, I used to be one of those "no cleansing" unicorns. Not any more.
I will say though, unless I'm wearing heavy make up, sometimes just a bit of rubbing with warm water is the best thing I can do for my skin. My skin would get really dry and sometimes even break out more. It wasn't until I started kind of leaving things alone that my skin improved
Dry, sensitive, hyperreactive, type 1 rosacea. My face doesn't like LRP cleansers. My face doesn't like niacinamide. Cerave, Cetaphil, and Neutrogena all burn and sting. Vanicream's gentle face wash is too drying. So, I get along with Aveeno Oat Gel Cleanser and I get along with the Avene Extremely Gentle Cleanser. I hit menopause and double cleansing or anything that leaves a film is aggravating my face and eyes. The tugging from a balm doesn't help either. My face doesn't like cleansing oils anymore either. I feel like I can't win lately.
Well you are not alone! I too cannot use any of the liquid cleansers you have mentioned. I can only tolerate Dove Sensitive Skin Bar and Aveeno Calm & Restore Cleanser in evenings. I have actually skipped cleansing for a night or two when my skin barrier was destroyed by products. I might be an exception, but I find my skin looks more wrinkly & irritated when I use the newer cleansers & moisturizers. Olay sensitive skin & Neutragena sensitive skin moisturizer are my “safe” moisturizers. Cleansing oils are a big no for me. Can’t win either!! PS No eye creams for me due to ocular rosacea and blephritis.
@Lilah13902 I have gone a week without washing my face before. I know how you feel. When our barrier is weak anything hurts and all we want is moisturize and CALMING. 🤣 Yea, my face is going through a strange transition. I was using albolene and vanicream but with menopause and these hot flashes my face just doesn't tolerate the "film" left behind. Then I tried LRP dermo cleanser. Same thing. My face and eyes don't like it. So even though I'm dry I'm just using Aveeno oat cleanser then the Aveeno oat moisturizing cream on my face.
I’m way past menopause! , but still have issues. I was thinking of trying the Aveeno oat cream face moisturizer. Neutrogena sensitive is no longer available, but I still have some. For me, less is best. When I was a teen ( many ages ago!), my grandmother who had beautiful skin and couldn’t understand why I washed my face so much, used to suggest I just wash with water. I was horrified! 😂
Living in tropical high humidity country i used to follow the trend of only rinse the face with just water in the morning. Believe me it not a god idea at all. Malassezia fur fur is no joke in hot humid country.
Whenever I try to wash my face everyday (I have combination sensitive skin), the area around my mouth and cheeks get very dry (vaseline or mosistruizer make it worse), so I try to wash my face every 2 days and my face not only feels better, but looks better.
I used to wash my face with cleaners and lotions and all kinds of things every day…I would suffer breakouts and red splotches and just shit looking skin. Gave it all up a few years ago and my skin is so much better. I wash with water only. I guess I’m a unicorn 🦄
I stopped using face wash and only wash with water twice a day and my 5 yrs severe acne improved tremendously so… as you always said people skin are different so there’re def people benefiting from this method and I know many people that say their persisted skin problems vanish by stop using face cleanser.
Very informative! I appreciated hearing about different skin conditions that can develop or are affected by not washing. As a teen I had oily skin and acne. In my late 60s I developed seborrheic dermatitis. I didn't realize oily skin and acne could make my skin more prone to seborrheic dermatitis, and that it is related to overgrowth of a fungus naturally growing on my skin. Those mites though. 😮
I'm a twice a day cleanser cuz I gotta take my tret off!! I use Arazlo in the evening and 15% Azelaic acid in the morning (both prescription). I am very oily and my 2x cleansing routine with my prescribed products is what is giving me the most success! I trust my derm and Dr Dray over anyone on social media.
My mom had the most beautiful clear from any blemishes skin, never washed her face with face cleaners - there were none in the Soviet Union. She often went to bed with her decorative cosmetics on. Used a face cheap moisturizer, nothing more. Never wore sunscreen also :) Very young and beautiful skin until very old age, people often asked her beauty secrets :)
I'm from Serbia, and have the same experience with my mom's skincare 😂 I remember only creams that sometimes my mom and grandmother were using Nivea classic and the classic apothecary panthenol cream.
I couldn't go without washing my face in the evening. I don't wash in the morning most times. I have very dry skin, and it helps not to wash it in the a.m Thank you. I hope you have a great week.
Does anyone out there understand the desire to wash absolutely nothing at all once menopause has happened???? Whyyyyy? i used to shower twice a day, always wear makeup ALWAYS WEAR A BRA!!! What’s happened to me!!!???
To each their own, but ngl I am shocked that people don't wash their face daily. Just because you dont have acne or some visible skin condition, doesnt mean your skin isnt dirty/dry/oily or couldn't benefit from a wash in general! Sweat, makeup, pollution, hands touching your face, hair products, your bedsheets, dust, sunscreen etc...your face comes into contact with so much every day, I feel like its a hygienic thing to wash your face. Not saying everyone needs an entire 10 step skin care routine, but a really gentle cleanser daily wouldnt hurt. But everyone should find what works for them. Also besides just health and hygiene, i feel like skincare has benefits in mental health! It can be relaxing to pamper yourself at the end of the day and nice to have a routine and structure if you need it in your life!
All my life i hated washing my face with cleansers as it was hurting me. Luckily never had big problems with my skin, just pores and occasional acne in certan parts of my cycle. As i was also never interested in makeup or skincare i have only recently discovered CeraVe and other afordable, non-perfumed and super hydrating skincare world. my skin ADORES it and at 45, besides the wrinkles and structural aging - my skin looks better than ever! azelaic, aha, bha, urea and centella, and petrolatum are the magic. and altruist SPF - very affordable quantities of good quality sunscreen to slather myself in as the base! thank youuuu so much!
I didn't wash my face or use skincare until my late 30's. Clear skin up until that point. I met the love of my life, and my hormones went crazy until they settled down lol so at that point I was struggling with hormonal acne but it went away after my hormones settled. Also getting older effects skin so I just replaced what my body was losing internally so it's been smooth sailing. But that is just my experience.
Back in my twenties the acne they said would go away was only getting worse. So I started washing more often. Skin got a lot worse. So I applied logic and did the opposite and stopped washing. Didn’t even use water for a month. After that time I had a clear face for the first time in years. I learned over the following years what caused flares. Soap is the worst. Also straight oil used as a moisturiser. As the months went by the sensitivity reduced and I could tolerate water and then baby lotion as a cleanser and finally gentle face wash. So my acne was more an allergy or sensitivity than caused by too much sebum or the wrong bacteria. Not sure if that is unusual but there are now forums for what they call the ‘Caveman Protocol’ and for some like me it’s the real solution. It doesn’t work for everyone but it’s worth giving it a month or three. After all it’s free!
I think the most important piece of advice about facewashing that nobody seems to mention is just like... for a lot of people, it's not necessary or ideal to use the exact same amount of the exact same soap the exact same number of times a day based on someone else's advice?? You need to adjust it to how your face *feels* on that day and what you did that day and where you were and what else you put on your face. I think most people just need to get used to feeling their face while they are washing it and adjusting what they are doing to how their face feels and not going by some generic routine that is supposed to be exactly the same every day. If you don't wear foundation then obviously your cleansing needs are different from someone who doesn't but if you don't need to remove foundation then just start with water rinse and *feel your face* and then decide what else your face needs that day from there - when you do a water rinse you can feel exactly where the oily parts and the dry parts are... you can use soap on the oily/problem areas and skip the soap on the dry areas some days to give them a break because they won't need cleanser as often. Depending on whether you went outside that day, how many products you use, what the air is like where you are, etc. etc.your face may OR may not need cleansing twice a day. I'm in my early 40's and don't wear much makeup most days so I rinse with water twice a day, but mostly I only use cleanser on my nose/chin area (once OR twice a day; depending on how it feels when I wake up I might skip the morning), just because that area gets oily and breaks out easily. Most of my face only gets water in the morning, and if I stayed inside all day and didn't wear sunscreen or it's winter (dry heating in my apartment) then sometimes the rest of my face only gets cleanser every few days because I'm in my early 40's and my face doesn't get super oily in all areas so there's no need to dry out the dry parts of my face *twice a day* if I'm not doing anything that'll make my face dirty and those parts of my face aren't producing extra oil on their own; not everyone's face gets exactly as dirty at exactly the same rate, you just have to adjust it to your lifestyle and skin type. Likewise if it feels greasy when you are doing your water rinse, then you wash it. It's not really rocket science. I'm as tired of the "dont' wash your face it's bad for you!" advice as I am of the "you MUST wash your face TWICE a day EVERY day with CLEANSER/SOAP or else you're GROSS and DIRTY" people because depending on what else you do to your face every day you probably don't have to do that either; the answer for most people is going to be somewhere in the middle and if you don't do exactly the same activities/makeup/temperature/locations every day then chances are the answer might not be exactly the same every day either.
I skip washing my face in the morning sometimes since I've been on tretinoin. Usually only when my skin is starting to get a little dry or recovering from being dry. Prior to tret, I never thought skipping my morning face was even an option lol.
My face looks it’s best when less is more. The aveeno oat line retinol and lactic acid on some days and spf has completely transformed my skin and I look better now then I did when I was younger. Don’t follow trends ppl.
I stopped washing my face, and it has never looked better, so healthy and flawless. I tried all the cleansers and acids my dermatologist recommended, and I even took Accutane twice, when I was 17 and 24. Despite this, my acne always came back. Today, I feel so frustrated because it seems like we've been misled for years by the pharmaceutical industry, and we have believed it. There are tons of skincare products, yet our skin has never been worse. God made us perfect, and when He did, He didn’t create skin products full of chemicals that are destroying our skin microbiome.
I have exactly the same story as you! I keep trying to really slowly integrate some ingredients to help with my uneven skintone and hyperpigmentation from old pimples and sundamage. I keep falling into the trap. I stopped everything except for micelar water, cerave moisturizer and spf in the morning. Cant really stop washing when I still use spf but otherwise i would. I used double cleansing method from skin1004 with centella, my skin got so irritated, clogged, uneven... After quitting for a week all inflammation has calmed down. I can see why people post those videos and im glad they do, the skincare industry lies more than the ‘unicorns’ do.
for some reasons, I had to stop washing my face for a while, I then have been broken out and my skin was darker. I nearly cried when I go back to my usual skincare routine. darn, it feels so good😅 now, back to the game💪
I heard the “don’t wash your face” thing in the 80’s. I think lots of these ideas are old and just resurface every once in awhile. Our human ancestors suffered a lot and died younger. I don’t want what they had. I like face washing, novocaine, antibiotics, sunscreen, seatbelts and child car seats, and ibuprofen, to name a few amazing modern things. My grandparents would never have wanted me to suffer the way they did.
To b honest, I don’t wash my face in the morning and only use cleanser to wash my nose and chin and area beside nose in the night from time to time. It def helps to restore my skin barrier (I accidentally damaged the skin Barry on my cheeks ).
Dr Dray says I'm a unicorn!! It must run in my family, my mom taught me to just wash my face with luke warm water as a child and even now I only use cleanser when I use waterproof sunscreen or if I've been unusually sweaty & I'm afraid my face stinks 😊
I wash twice a day. But w oily skin and perioral dermatitis I have to. And I am actually on my second giant bottle of LRP Toleriane gentle hydrating wash! It is by far the best cleanser I have ever used for my skin For my double cleanse at night I use the LRP sensitive skin micellar water then use my cleanser. I know it may be redundant but I wear and reapply SPF and need to ensure it is all removed. Thr simpler I am w my skin care, the better. The only time I have to use a different cleanser is my few times a week face wash w P Zinc in it. It is a tad drying but worth it to help w my dermatitis.
I cleanse at night to take off my makeup and sunscreen but just splash my face with water in the morning. I know many rave about double cleansing, but every time I double cleanse my skin gets red and irritated! Not cleansing at all doesn’t make sense though, especially if you wear sunscreen and makeup.
I always thought it was gross not to wash off lotions and dirt and pollution from your face. Even in the morning. There's dust and who knows what floating around in the air while you sleep.
I have a routine where I use Laroche Posay (creamy) cleanser in the morning then Vit C serum, moisturizer if needed and finally sunscreen Evening I use CeraVe (hydrating )cleanser and do my HA serum, retinol followed by moisturizer. I use different moisturizers based on dryness of my skin. Every single day. My skin looks and feels great
My mother never washed her face with water she used ponds skin cream and she always had the most beautiful skin and no wrinkles well into 70s until she passed away and I believe we need to listen to our elders 😊
Oh please, I hear ONLY on the internet about these miraculous old women with no wrinkles. Never seen one IRL in fifty years. Everyone who is human has lines with ageing. Everyone. I know a girl who claimed she had totally unlined skin. Then she finally got new glasses after years of wearing ones too weak for her and oh boy, she stopped claiming she had no lines and RAN to the chemists for skinscare.
After having a newborn I fell asleep almost every night without washing my face out of exhaustion. Nothing bad happened so now I just wash my face when I'm in the shower or if I happen to wear makeup.
My mum is one of these lucky people who wash their face with water and has perfect skin. So i learned from her and did the same. Also had beautiful skin ... until my mid 30s. Just took it as a sign of ageing. 2 years ago the skincare trend on TH-cam didn’t pass me unnoticed. Here i learned about cleasing your face every day. Since then my skin has improved so much.
I used to not wash my face. I’d get maybe 1 or 2 spots now and again but my skin was so so much nicer than it is now after 4 years of daily face washing. I started cuz I wanted even better skin but now my face is covered in spots and scars
My skin starts to itch and get micro bumps due to that just due to sweat. I can't even imagine what will happen to my face if I stopped washing it. People are really daring.
When the lockdown happened I was obsessed with skin care. Serums, moisturizers, etc. My skin was a mess! Then, I got tired of my skin routine and stopped all together. Washing my face in the shower only and very little moisturizer and no serums or other products. Suddenly my face cleared up and has never looked better. I’ve stopped the crazy skin routines and just use moisturizer every few days and I use spf when I go out and my skin looks good 👍.
I only wash once a day, at night in the shower. Can’t remember the last time. I washed my face in the morning upon waking up. My skin tends toward dry, so I use the Cetaphil ‘gentle skin cleanser’. And whether or not, I have a make up or water resistant sunscreen I always double cleanse, mostly because I like the way it feels 🥰
One of my dermatologists told me back in the 1990s that about 10-15% of the population will NEVER have a skin condition like Acne, Rosacea, Eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, Keratosis pilaris, etc. Not even freckles or wrinkles! Both of my grandmothers had flawless skin like this, pretty much throughout life!
i never washed my face only water and occasionally some soap bar thats it i really don't care other than everything thing is expensive now my skin looks perfect for me
I’ve battled seb dermatitis & a little Rocesea. I have slightly dry skin & the only products that helped me was the La Roche Posay Tolerian line. The mild cream cleanser and the double repair cream. I also cut back on food that can inflame my condition & added a probiotic that contains L. Paracasei strain in it. I kept my skincare simple but also worked on my gut health because what we put in has an effect on the outside as well I think.
I love cleansing, my skin is dry/sensitive and 60, finding the right cleanser has been a journey, my morning single cleanse and evening second cleanse hasn’t changed for about 3 years, I use QV FACE Gentle Cleanser (Australian pharmacy brand) inexpensive available at every pharmacy and my dermatologist’s recommendation. First cleanse and I’m a daily tinted mineral sunscreen user, mascara, lip tint and sometimes light makeup…..both The Ordinary Squalene Cleanser and The Inky List Oat Balm Cleanser work beautifully for my skin and I love the whole massage associated with the balm application, I use a warm wrung out soft fluffy cotton face washer held over my face then gently wipe away (I picked this tip up from Caroline Hirons and I just love it) my derm suggests for my skin a gentle terry flannel is enough daily exfoliating. I then jump in the shower and wash with my gentle cleanser. I think QV FACE is a similar line to Vanicream, but locally owned manufactured cruelty free and vegan.
I have normal to mildly oil with mild rosacea. My lifestyle is mainly indoors. If i do not wear makeup, moisutrizer, or sunscreen, I can go without washing my face more than twice a week. However.... than my skin is more flushed from natural and painless redness (my family is naturally ruddy). So I wash my face for anti aging/vanity reasons. I want to wear suncreen and makeup. I want to use retinols and vitamin c and other things. So i wash with a gentle cleanser at night and then use glycolic acid and retinol and a very lightweight moisture. In the am I only use cool water on my face and then a vitamin c serum with glycerin. Too much moisture gives me acne. Too much washing activates my rosacea and things sting.
I'm a unicorn. However, since getting well into middle-age, I have to cleanse and moisturize in the winter when my skin gets dry and a bit of eczema. ETA: I rarely wear makeup so there isn't a lot to wash off in the first place.
I’ve found that if I wash my face with ANYTHING except the cerave hydrating face cleanser (OG formula, not the foaming one) I break out. I use a cleansing balm (I like the neutrogena makeup melting one) to take my sunscreen and makeup off and then follow with the cerave. I use the daily cerave lotion and then the Madagascar centella sunscreen during the day. I only wash my face at night. My skin is thriving! Went from cystic acne break ours nearly all over my face to the clearest skin possible.
I had moderate acne from puberty up until just after I graduated college. I never went to a dermatologist, just tried a plethora of over the counter products. After about a year of using something that seemed to mostly work (can't remember what), it ceased to and I just gave up. Of course by only rinsing, oil began to build up and I became a little more aggressive when drying my face with a towel in order to remove it. Eventually, I realized that simply rinsing and gently exfoliating with a regular old cotton towel in the morning and evening essentially cured my acne and by that I mean one or two pimples every few months. Once I figured this out and stuck to a routine, my acne improved immediately. I do now follow up the towel with another rinse and air dry because it helps with dryness. That's my entire facial skin care routine, no moisturizer or anything else and for the past eight years it's worked nearly as well as I would expect anything to, at least for acne. HOWEVER, I obviously should have been using sun screen and I do have large pores on my nose that never improve. So, I am finally going to go see a derm. Maybe it's a bad idea long term, but don't be surprised if this method works for you at least until you can get in to see someone legit yourself.
THANK YOU FOR THIS! The irony was that this morning my face felt so dry so I washed it off with water and threw some moisturizer on, but I felt guilty that I might break out and then I see this on my recommended. It's like you knew what was gonna be on my mind a day ago haha.
I wash my face at night, but not in the morning. I will say the past month or so I have been slacking in my routine, but my mental health was on the decline. I’ve gotten back into the habit, thankfully.
For years I used to just wash my face with plain water daily and at other times would get washed in the bath but not scrubbed with soap. I never had spotty facial skin, my face did not get dry or patchy or anything.
My mom who is 83 no longer washes her face with a cleanser. She uses a wet wash cloth twice a day and that's it. She doesn't leave the house though. I would never not wash my face though. If I didn't, I would have every kind of bump possible on my face. LOL
Someone said to “Stop brushing teeth?!” Totally gross, I’ve seen people that don’t brush their teeth and their teeth have plaque all over them, are yellow, their gums are red and swollen. What an absolutely stupid thing to do. 😖
I wash with only water because in allergic to soap on my face- I break out into hives and I have EXTREMELY dry skin with eczema on my face 😬 putting soap on my face it burns so bad 😞
Dray.
What sunscreen do you use?
I started using cleansers this year only. I love using riceberry face wash. It has reduced my acne and improved the brightness of my skin.
FINALLY!!!!! Thank you dr Dray to stop this nonsense. Influencers often create these trends for content and they don’t realize they might hurt some of their followers.
At one point, you gonna have to put 2 and 2 together, so if some people don't wanna use their brain, so be it.
@@oceaneo4603 agree with you, but not everybody knows how to make their own researches and they trust influencers coming up with some loose “scientific mechanisms”.
@@oceaneo4603 🤣🤣🤣🤣I know what you mean.
Followers should also have to have their own brain
My dad has only ever rinsed his face with water. He's never put anything else on it before. Not moisturizer, not sunscreen, not soap. Never had a pimple in his life that I know of, and he's 88.
Meanwhile I take excellent care of my skin and I break out if someone looks at me wrong 🤪
😂
My husband is the typical man that refuses to have a skincare routine. He just showers, uses a 2 in 1 shampoo and doesn’t even bother with lotion. This man has beautiful skin and has not aged at all. Meanwhile, my oily, textured skin cannot go one day without washing my face at least once a day. I have tried using just water in the morning and was able to get away with that as long as I don’t use heavy products the night before. Otherwise, I use a gentle cleanser in the morning and a foaming cleanser at night. I think genetics do play a role here for sure
Depends on his diet and routine too. If he skips skincare, and make it up by eating healthy, workout and get enough sleep then it's not just genetic.
Yeah those little mites love oil I think…
I tried this yesterday and my skin was irritated and inflamed all day so I think I'll keep washing twice a day
I have rosacea which is now under control due to oracea, a low dose antibiotic. It took a while, but now my face looks normal. I also use topical prescription azalaic acid.
I have rosacea and vanicream works for me in the morning then I used my prescription azelaic acid 15% then sunscreen
@@anad05very true. I found the less I mess w my face ( cleansing once) keeps my rosacea calmer
I can't use just a gentle cleanser cause I wear makeup :(
I've rarely used cleanser on my face. I washed my face with warm water every morning. That's it. I never had issues, very few breakouts even in teen years. Only started using a cleanser and moisturizing after washing as I got older (50+). I do use better products these days though thanks to you Dr Dray.
Same here!
Since I work from home I wash my face every other day unless I’m wearing makeup I’ve noticed my skin is less irritated and less acne prone.. it works for me 🙌🏼
Does work for sensitive skin, no doubt! Same here
Unicorn🤣 I can’t go even half a day wo washing my face. Too much oil and I also have perioral dermatitis-for myself-not washing my face will make my skin horrible. Been there. Tried it. Didn’t work for my skin😝
@@PilatesbyGina lol 😂
If you told me this during my adult acne era I wouldn’t believe you
@@spacealien_xx 🤣I get it!!
Same. I go a week at a time with out washing my face when my depression is bad. My skin looks worse over time not better
Same😢
I never have had skin or hair problems.
GROSS
GROSS
@@janecoe9407What an insensitive, rude, ignorant thing to say. What's wrong with you?
What's "gross" exactly? The fact that the original poster gets regular bouts of severe depression which make it like hard work to do ANYTHING or the fact that face washing is one of the things that falls by the way side during these episodes? OR is "gross" referring to your commenting without exercising the grey matter inside your head??? @@janecoe9407
It is neither gross or wrong. I have gone a couple dys. of not washing my face, when my skin barrier has been impaired. Then I return to my normal routine after it is better. I applaud your efforts during those difficult times. I’m sure you look just fine. Take care
I do the same - I feel like my skin looks almost better for the first few days, but then I get horrible rebound acne about five days later
Twice a day. Every day. Absolutely, my skin loves the cleansing, and the attention!!
THERE IS NITHING SO NICE AND BEING C;LEAN AND FRESH.
It wasn’t sarcasm. You call something very rare a unicorn. So some people can rarely be ok with not washing your face.. so that’s what she said 🤷
Good Afternoon Dr Dray . Thank you for your videos. I am a fan of cleansing. I have simplified my routine massively over the years. Thanks to you I’ve incorporated sunscreen into my routine and can see the benefits. The whole cleansing regime is something that I enjoy and do for myself.
My mother is 92 and washes her face every day! She still uses Neutrogena hydro boost. I learned early to take care of my face and skin.
How long does it take you to shower?
@@ashlynnkaplan680If her skin is sensitive I recommend rinsing it off. Eye makeup must be removed to avoid irritation or damage to the eyes.
I kind of had those ordeals. But unlike you, I pointed the finger on the products I used. Some are very 💩ppy, not for you, and sometimes both.
I’m a hairstylist. You only wash your hair once every 2 weeks?! 😖
I’ve had to wash people’s hair that didn’t wash it for weeks and the smell was like rotten tomatoes and the feel of the hair was so greasy. 🤢
There are so many dead skin cells, oil and loose hair that accumulates on the scalp/hair every few days that one should wash/scrub to get rid of.
@@user-hx7mi7ml8u like i said i use ACV In place of shampoo. All those chemicals aren't good for your scalp
I have rosacea and still didn't find THE produtos, can you share the ones you use?
@pendafen7405 I am a rosecea suffer, and I can share what I use. I use the new cerave facial oil cleanser.,and I use either their cerave lotion during summer months because it's light and during the winter I use their cream. Laroche Posa facial cleanser is another great gentle cleanser. I wash my face only at night. Hope this is helpful.
@@butterflygagirl3757 🙏thank you so much! Gonna get these products and see how my skin likes them. Happy holidays🌟
You were allergic to an ingredient cerave didn't destroy your skin lmao
@gab1888 An ingredient in cerave destroyed your skin***** There I fixed it for you. You even say most skin care doesn't work for you lol
Do you wash with the same cleanser twice a day? TIA❤️
Actually no. I wash with a salicylic cleanser in the morning and do a double cleanse with a cleansing balm and then Cerave cleansing oil in the evening. 😊
@@marylawman8603i do the same also. Cerave with SA in AM and double cleansing at night(using regular cerave face wash)
As someone with oily skin i cannot stop because if i do my skin start having pimple and it not cute for me at least having pimple they get big
Dray. Hugs Sam
What’s your routine like as in which products do you use?
@@annekimuhu4108 seconded, I really wanna know too!🙏
I am one of those unicorns.
I found my skin to be very oily the next morning tho, I just use the oil absorbance sheet and that's it, I'm good for the rest of the day
I feel validated, i have some eczema around my nose and skipping washing a few days out of the week seems to help prevent irritation
I'm liking lubriderm advanced therapy (maroon label). It's rich and emollient but dries down quickly and doesn't leave the greasy filmy feeling
What cleanser and moisturizer do you use?
You actually don't have to take off tret. It's absorbed into your skin but am
I have very dry skin, and it helps not to wash it in the a.m
Thank you. I hope you have a great week.
Does anyone out there understand the desire to wash absolutely nothing at all once menopause has happened???? Whyyyyy? i used to shower twice a day, always wear makeup ALWAYS WEAR A BRA!!! What’s happened to me!!!???
Not menopause. I have to shower daily and hate wearing my bra. Depression
Oil can physically never be used as a moisturizer. It will only lock in any water present. Only water hydrates skin.
Yes this omg I am a unicorn to

I wash my face in a diy mixture. Green tea, aloe vera and olive oil. Works for dry skin.
Im yhe unicorn because I dont remember last time I washed my face and my face looks amazing. Using active ingredients
Thank you! I stopped believing these professionals when it comes to skincare... my skin feels and looks better without using anything on my skin!
for some reasons, I had to stop washing my face for a while, I then have been broken out and my skin was darker. I nearly cried when I go back to my usual skincare routine. darn, it feels so good😅 now, back to the game💪
I can't believe that some people are suggesting not to use a cleanser to wash your face with all the grime and pollutants in the air.😮
Kudos to electricity and refrigeration, without it we’d be in the dark ages
To b honest, I don’t wash my face in the morning and only use cleanser to wash my nose and chin and area beside nose in the night from time to time. It def helps to restore my skin barrier (I accidentally damaged the skin Barry on my cheeks ).
I have a very sensitive skin and acne prone skin too....but washing my face twice a day with gentle face wash helps alot ...
Happy Tuesday!
I have a routine where I use Laroche Posay (creamy) cleanser in the morning then Vit C serum, moisturizer if needed and finally sunscreen
Evening I use CeraVe (hydrating )cleanser and do my HA serum, retinol followed by moisturizer.
I use different moisturizers based on dryness of my skin.
Every single day. My skin looks and feels great
My mother never washed her face with water she used ponds skin cream and she always had the most beautiful skin and no wrinkles well into 70s until she passed away and I believe we need to listen to our elders 😊
You do you bo
Even during shower, bath?
@@gal5402 I guess not I never was with her when she took a bath but growing up I always saw her use ponds cold cream only 🤷🏻♀️
My mum was the same. Ponds was her one skin care item.
Good morning Dr Dray ❤
Morning!
Hope everyone has a great week!!!!
You too!
My skin starts to itch and get micro bumps due to that just due to sweat. I can't even imagine what will happen to my face if I stopped washing it. People are really daring.
I AGREE THAT IS NASTY TO NOT WASH..,
I've always washed my face at least 2x a day. Not always with a cleanser, but definitely with a cloth.
Both of my grandmothers had flawless skin like this, pretty much throughout life!
i never washed my face only water and occasionally some soap bar thats it i really don't care other than everything thing is expensive now my skin looks perfect for me
Dr Drey you are looking very healthy!!
I always double cleanse at night but just use water in the morning.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Happy Tuesday and Happy Halloween, Dr. Dray ❤
Same to you!
