2015? Sheesh. That's so long ago, yet so recent. It's sad that US arcades were long dead by then. It was nice that Japan's arcade scene stayed relevant for far longer. These are some lovely sprites.
Japan's arcade scene is STILL relevant. Not as much as the past, obviously, but not dead yet. Also, the system this game is on was effectively a souped up Neo Geo (with some key differences) also made by IGS. The PolyGame System. It doesn't have a lot of releases, but the majority of them are actually pretty good.
Man, I FEEL you. I was born in 1980, and big arcades were MAGICAL. And in the early nineties, I knew where every SF2 style game/cool beat 'em up was, within a 2 mile range of my house: THIS laundromat had Art of Fighting, THAT gas station had Samurai Showdown and Alien vs Preadtor, etc. THEN there were the cool pizza spots and video rental places with dedicated arcade rooms. Mega arcades do survive in one form, at least: the arcade bars in hip cities where you can play everything for free, if you pay the cover charge. At least that.
4:44 "What am I playing?! Goof Troop all of a sudden?!" got me a nice morning giggling. Great video, as always. This game kind of remind me of NeoGeo's "Sengoku 3", both in visuals and in its special attacks. Keep up the good work!
I never heard of a beat ‘em up series getting _ten games._ That’s absolutely bonkers in the best way. I like you mentioned Capcom’s series too. The first game where you’re battling tens of guys while mounted on a horse and a zoomed-out viewpoint looks rather amazing and like no other beat ‘em up.
Having watched an animated summary of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, I have somewhat of a grasp of it. I can verify that polar bears are 100% not a part of the narrative (but dudes taunting people so hard that their blood vessels erupt and kill them is).
This series is also known as both Sangokushi Senki and Sanguo Zhanji and I remember playing this one, but I like the Atomiswave one more. This game apparently runs on the IGS PolyGameMaster hardware, which also runs this game's sequel and several Cave games. This game was also released on the Switch as part of a PGM compilation as well.
There was an IGS collection just put out on Switch. It has 3 Knights of Valor games, plus a handful of others. A bit pricey (29.99 USD) but when there's a good sale I am picking it up. IGS made a bunch of games based on classic Chinese novels - all very stylized and fun.
I'd wait for an update. If you're one to care about emulation options it's worth noting that there are no filter options and the screen is forced at 16:9 ratio.
Yeah, that series gets crazier with every installment. KOV3 has more RPG elements like quests. And leveling your characters gives them more advanced moves. It's a HUGE game for a beat'em up
KOV3 is just a grindfest though, it goes against everything that makes a good arcade game. You can't do a 1 Credit Clear of it, you have to buy memory cards (each with a limited number of uses) from the arcade operator just to save your character progress each time. Put in another coin, grind the same levels over. Repeat. It's near enough a scam of a game as far as arcades go, and a massive drop down from the original title and earlier sequels (and not even that good artistically, enemies die with a puff of smoke?) I put in a lot of work to get KOV3 emulated in the first place (along with those I was working with to get the task done) as it was by far the toughest of the PGM2 games to get working due to the extra layers of encryption, but it absolutely was not worth it if all you care about is the game. Even before it was emulated, I was often asked about it because people wanted to hack it into a more regular, fun, game instead (although strangely, since it was emulated, I don't think anybody has)
@@mamehaze Well, i totally agree with you. Game is too massive for a simple beat'em up. It looks like a game made for consoles... and exploitation (of modern monetization schemes). Thank you for another awesome arcade review. I like weapon beat'em ups more than others and this game looks fun as hell. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms tie-in in fun too lol.
When it comes to Chinese inspired games I was partial to Destiny of an Emperor on NES, I know it wasn't a strategy game but a fine Capcom RPG. This game did appear in an arcade in New Jersey though I had no idea who IGS were but I found out this was a huge series years later.
I went from Destiny, to the Romance series, then to various movies, the live action TV series (1995 and 2010) and the novel. Love Romance of the Three Kingdoms!

Sitting here watching your video in my Faith No More Tee shirt and hear you make a Mr. Bungle reference...you've earned a subscribe from me. Nicely done, sir.
I played this game with my friends at the arcade. We got so good and knew all the meta so we’d be playing for hours using only one coin. There are combos and magic swords. Very fun and fond memories.
It funny how Koei went from making the deepest grand strategy games for 8 and 16-bit consoles to spamming Dynasty Warriors and its countless spin-offs, and the exact turning point was a Soul Calibur clone of all things.
I played the hell out of this for a long time on the PS. There's a free to play version there. I am a HUGE KOEI fan and I loved all the ROT3K games, and still do to this day.
