This game is known as Gaiapolis: Koganedaka no Ken in Japan, and has art and character design by Twinbee character designer Shuzilow HA. Also, there was actually a home port, but it was a bootleg NES version made by Sachen. Apparently in the bootleg NES port, the playable characters have given names like Lin, Amy and Ken (which are the names of the developers of the port). This game runs on the same Konami arcade board that also runs Metamorphic Force, and Violent Storm.

Dude! I remember Gaiapolis. This was the first, and only arcade game I ever finished.
The old bowling alley in my hometown in Australia had the cabinet and my mum made me join a team to get me out of the house on saturday mornings. This was back in the 90s.
One week they had a sleep over night where we watched movies and bowled and I had the chance for a proper play through. I must have pumped about $30 worth of coins into that thing but I eventually completed it. It was such a cool game.

Ok so the length of this game probably makes slightly more sense in it's original Japanese context. Japanese arcades in the 80s and 90s had community notebooks that were up by the front counter (though some popular games may have had a dedicated book) and these notebooks acted as a sort of pre-internet community forum. You could leave messages, note a high score, declare yourself the King of All Cosmos, draw a wang, all kinds of stuff. One common use was to write down tips for other players. For example if you discovered a secret, figured out a good strat for a hard boss, or solved a puzzle, you could write it down to help out the next guy. In a setting like this, arcade games with passwords don't sound so crazy.

these sprites are lovely. Konami gotta bless us with an arcade compilation of unreleased games. The unlock system sounds pretty innovative for a 90's arcade game.

Great review! I miss 90's Konami! They put out some really fantastic games! I've never even heard of this one, but it actually looks really fun! A shame it never made it over to North America. A 2 hour arcade game, though? I've never heard of an arcade game so long it required passwords! I can't imagine desperately trying to find some way to jot down the password in the middle of an arcade back then! 😅

Not only is it in Tate mode it's also a slightly higher horizontal resolution compared to other Mystic Warriors Based Hardware games, it's about the same resolution as a CPS2 game, that's why it looks sharper, especially on a CRT. I think it's the first arcade PCB I ever owned. Unfortunately unlike other Mystic Warriors Based Hardware games at the time the music on this is not nearly as good as any of the other games (Mystic Warriors, Metamorphic Force, Violent Storm, Bucky O Hare).

I remember I wanted to try this game a decade ago and the file I had must have been wrong as it did not work. I finally got around to playing it about a year ago and I thought it was good and enjoyed it. It might be a bit too simple and repetitive for some, but I thought the balance was pretty good overall. Having more stuff isn't always better. One thing I wanted to add here is that there's another move for each character, which I think wasn't mentioned. I forget where I found this out, in a comment somewhere, but there's a special melee move attacking in a circle immediately surrounding the player, which can be helpful when surrounded. It's done by doing a circle with the joystick, clockwise for the prince and dragon, and counter clockwise for the fairy. It's really not even a full circle having just tested it, as it will activate on the fourth direction. Also, from having just checked, it looked like only the fairy can block, but that was at the beginning of the game and maybe that changes later.

And how many arcade cabinets did they really sell, especially just in Japan. The password system really helps though! Never heard of this game, looking forward to playing it.
