    Lyrics
    Oh she knows
    She takes his hand
And prays the child will understand
At the door they watch the men go by
In the clothes that daddy wore
    Mothers pride
    Baby boy
    His father's eyes
He's a soldier waiting for war
    Time will come
    He'll hold a gun
    His father's son
    And as he grows
    He hears the band
Takes the step from boy to man
And at the shore she waves her son goodbye
Like the man she did before
    Mothers pride
    Just a boy
    His country's eyes
He's a soldier waving at the shore
And in her heart the time has come
    To lose a son
And all the husbands, all the sons, all the lovers gone
    They make no difference
    No difference in the end
Still hear the woman say your daddy died a hero
In the name of god and man
    Mothers pride
    Crazy boy
    His lifeless eyes
    He's a soldier now forevermore
He'll hold a gun till kingdom come

Many years ago while on the way to Desert Storm, I listened to this song and pictured his words. I could not stop crying. To this day, I still cry when I hear this song. It's such a sad and touching song.

I agree Leonard, Over 30 years ago I was floating on the Persian Gulf as a young Marine ready for orders to hit the Sadam Hussein electrified Beach front and all I could think of was listening to this song and the line " your father died a hero" except , I wasn't a father yet. I was just 20 years old with a lot of beautiful dreams ahead. I'm a lucky man. I lived after that to fulfill all my dreams. I hope you did too Leonard. God bless George Michael 🙏 ❤

I bought this CD right before our ship left the Gulf for Japan to get refitted. I always did like this more than the song that ended up becoming an unofficial Gulf War anthem, "Praying for Time."

I was on the USS Iwo Jima hitching a ride to the gulf. It was on the ship's store where I bought this life changing cassette. Will never forget those times. As the saying goes, " there were the worst of times and they were the best of times. Hope everyone gets a chance to watch his documentary, "Freedom" on HBO, simply amazing and must watch TV if you're a fan of his.

If anything to me this song is a eulogy to those who died needlessly in WW1 - the most senseless, most appalling, most destructive war (cause of WW2) in human history. This song is a masterpiece, George Michael’s finest, no contest.

I remember first hearing this song whilst my mother was dying from cancer, to this day it’s the only song that makes me cry. I don’t think there’s another singer who could sing this song like George, no one who could inject as much emotion and feeling into the vocals as much as he could. He was - and is - a legend who’s talent is sorely missed.

Sometimes I'm completely speechless when I hear his voice and there are instances, I must confess, when I hardly can keep my eyes dry, but if you are not touched by George's music you must have a heart of stone! On 16th January 1991 I was lucky enough to see GM's Cover to Cover concert at Birmingham, UK. The 2nd date of his tour.
As we travelled by coach (from Manchester) the country was on the brink of war in Iraq. During the concert as GM broke into this song the whole arena fell silent, people were actually in tears.
As we travelled home the coach driver announced over the tannoy that Allied Forces aircraft had started bombing and 'Desert Storm' was in progress.
The rest of the journey home was in eerie silence. All I could think about was this song we'd just heard sang live.
I still think of this night whenever I hear it.

He is such an amazing songwriter. This song makes me want to cry. His voice is so beautiful but he is underrated and I hate it so much. George Michael was the first artist I heard that made me realize something was wrong with what was on the radio today. He inspired me to explore music's past to find enjoyment in what I was listening to. I don't like modern music, some songs are okay but they'll never compare to older music and that bothers me. I have determination to change that one day. Thank you George for bringing happiness to me, and many others, through your music. I love you.

    Oh she knows
    She takes his hand
And prays the child will understand
At the door they watch the men go by
In the clothes that daddy wore
    Mother's pride
    Baby Boy
    His father's eyes
He's a soldier waiting for war
    Time will come
    He'll hold a gun
    His father's son
    And as he grows
    He hears the band
Takes the step from boy to man
And at the shore she waves her son goodbye
Like the man she did before
    Mother's pride
    Just a boy
    His country's eyes
He's a soldier waving at the shore
And in her heart the time has come
    To lose a son
And all the husbands, all the sons, all the lovers gone
    They make no difference
    No difference in the end
Still hear the woman say your daddy died a hero
In the name of God and man
    Mother's pride
    Crazy boy
    His lifeless eyes
    He's a soldier now forevermore
He'll hold a gun till kingdom come
A MASTERPIECE ! NOTHING MORE TO SAY ❤️

My father, now 96 and very well alive, lost his mother when he was only 14. I always think of this song what they both must have felt, saying goodbye to each other.

Symbolic archetype of the mother. The mother-child relationship, so different and so common. A man's cry, in which a fragile, modest, talented boy-child is revealed. 😮

The Universe led him and guided him to another sphere. For me , no one can resonate and touch my soul as George Michael does. No one. A beautiful soul who cared , authentic and spades of integrity. He loved and and he cared sincerely.
You remain loved and respected George. We are all flawed and not perfect, but you were perfect to me as a human being. We saw both sides , dark and light , that's why I still respect and love you ad a human being.
    X😇

George Michael...........a beautiful soul...........an extremely sensitive guy, who seemed to be troubled by Fame and attention, in his latter years. When he was in Wham ( with his school friend Andrew) the lyrics were very up beat and happy. As he progressed as a solo artist, his songs portray, so much hurt and pain ( listen to Older album) Of course, he had to fly the nest and show the world he was a song writing genius.............Great for us fans on the OUTSIDE.............not so good, for George fighting those inner troubles. His music, will Live on Forever. R.I.P George.
