If you watch interviews with Aretha back in the 60s, she's very quiet, reserved and shy. It isn't until she becomes more popular and somehow realizes how much impact she's having that she is able to come out of her shell.

Great review. I had no idea Janet lived across from Aretha in LA. Loved that tidbit 🖤 that's a good to focus on the just recording the album and having some flashbacks. 🖤 Mariah Carey did a podcast with Questlove and she talked about trying to get some rehearsal time with Aretha for Divas Live. Mariah does an impression of Aretha that makes me laugh. 🖤🖤

Nick-you are dedicated and I’m so glad that you and Joseph are iconic balancing personal/professional. Joseph-I’m with you on Patty and Chaka. However, like Nick-my parents were very Blues Brothers oriented and I saw it a lot-later learning my mom-a singer in the 70s-met Aretha and sang with her for a night. Anyway, I love love love your (both) take with all of this.

Delighted you mentioned the TH-cam series Got 2 Real, one of my favorite go to events, but when you described Aretha’s Amazing Grace project it reminded me of the controversial Wendy Williams Show Review. Would love to see you review classic films of old but be careful describing the Natural Women of old to the Superficial look of today’s stars.

Finally, someone else who’s seen more movies than me 😆 On a side note: my grandmother met a sister of Aretha’s before I was born and gave her a necklace that had little locks on it. We still have the necklace. My grandmother has early onset Alzheimer’s now so maybe I should have her relay the story to me one more time. Anyway, that’s my connection to Aretha.

Not true, Aretha did write some of her hit songs, "(Sweet, Sweet, Baby) Since You Been Gone," and "Think," by Aretha and Ted White, and "Call Me," "Spirit in the Dark," "Daydreaming," "All the Kings Horses," and "Rock Steady" were written solely by Aretha, and those were huge original hits....

There's so much dirt on Aretha, her father and his shenanigans. Crazy stuff. Knowing all that it's not surprising she was pregnant so young. I think Aretha was smoking and drinking at those parties that young. The family scrubbed all that out.

Wish I can find a review that compare this film to the mini series GENIUS: ARETHA which was also excellent. Maybe after the Oscars and Grammys, you’ll decide to do a comparison of the two.

Yeah, not watching this. I went to middle school followed by high school with a girl that was pregnant at 11 and by the time we graduated she was up to 4 children. Everytime you saw that blue windbreaker, you knew she was pregnant. Why the teachers did nothing I will never understand and resent them for that. And to think, I thought she was just overweight until we got in high school.

I did not hate it it was interesting and it had the actual music which is nice. I can say I liked it, I would not say the performances where nomination deserving but they were good. I enjoyed it and if they had a part 2 i would want to see it. I'm more interested in her later life When she had her weight struggles and living as a living legend diva with financial problems. Part 2 would be a more interesting movie.
