This kind of thing is so annoying. This happened to my restaurant coworker bc he was a ballet dancer. They were always insisting he needed to come out of the closet, even though he had a longtime girlfriend, and he got frustrated trying to fight this lie. One day when he wasn’t around I stood up for him and told them to leave him alone. And there were these two very large black guys in highschool (i'm using large as a descriptor both ways here, they weren't skinny and were well over 6' tall.) The scary guys no one messed with because they looked strong enough to pick you up and throw you into the roof tiles and pretend nothing happened. ...and I saw them 18 years after highschool in Walmart. Together. Engaged.
Also, I worked at a spa for a long time and let me tell you we had a LOT of guys make pedicure appointments because getting their toenails trimmed and rough spots on their feet smoothed out made their wives happy (no itching them with their feet in bed) and saved them podiatrist trips since nothing was getting infected due to neglect. As a woman where almost everyone thought during my late teenage years that I was a lesbian: I feel this in my soul.
According to people, the reason for that was because I had shorter hair than most girls, an alternative clothing style and I hadn’t had a boyfriend yet (still haven’t). Also, I appear straight forward (but not in a straight way ha ha) and confident (sometime put offish)… apparently I should be insecure and demure and look mainstream, otherwise I can’t be a straight woman.
I find it truly annoying that one has to adhere to a really set in stone list of characteristics to be considered truly straight or truly gay or whatever else. As many people have said in the comments: How’s about we don’t assume stuff anymore? And just let each other be ourselves? And in turn we are kind in turning down people of the gender/s that we aren’t attracted to without flipping our shit when they assume to approach us (when approached with respect ofc)

Classmates, my family and a few strangers often assumed that I'm lesbian, because I'm not girly enough and haven't had a boyfriend yet... as a teenager I really struggled with this assumption, but now with 26 I'm just laughing about it.
It's nothing bad, but I personally started doubting myself and who I am. I tried getting rid of this "image", by wearing stuff that's considered "feminine".
Even though I struggled I learned a lot from this time. Your sexuality doesn't define who you are or how you look. I also really hate this typical feminine, typically masculine agenda.

I did date someone and I'm still with him to this day, but then my mom thought I had a crush on my work best friend and told me she thinks I'm lesbian. That sent me spiraling questioning everything about my past, identity, and relationship. Im still dealing with it 2 years later as a 20 year old. No matter what I do, people think I'm lesbian. I hope in the near future i stop caring and just marry the man I've dated for the past 5 years. I'm currently going through an episode of "am i gay?" and it's torture. Lmao it happens to me all the time! I’m a straight gal, I look “feminine” enough (I mean, my hair isn’t short and I wear makeup sometimes), but people always assume that I’m a lesbian because of my hobbies, my style, my manners and the way I talk to people (especially guys). What I mean by that is that I love building and repairing stuff, I love firearms and am good at shooting, I’m spending a lot of time repairing my van by myself, I never wear anything “sexy” or “feminine”, and talk to men like they are my pals (from my experience, they perceive this behavior as something absolutely not sexy and don’t try to hit on me, which is my goal lol). Y’all just can’t imagine how many times my friends tried to find me a gf! I told them I’m not lesbian, but I believe some of them still think I’m secretly gay and just don’t want to come out of the closet yet. Absolutely annoying, yet sometimes hilarious.

Yep, I’m a straight woman, but I have a Mohawk with shaved sides, don’t wear makeup to work (because why would I want to look like a crackhead raccoon after 8 hours??) and don’t wear my wedding bands because they’re infection vectors. I have been asked MANY times if I’m a lesbian. My favorite was a psych patient in the ER. I walked in to introduce myself at the beginning of my shift and he went on a tirade that ended in “you must be one of those LGBTQ liberals!” To which I answered with a (somehow) straight face, “sir, I’m a republican” and he looked mystified.
I asked colleague of mine to switch patients with me. She’s a beautiful woman with long flowing hair and always looked “put together.” She was a lesbian, married and with a baby. I asked her to, “go touch him with your GAYNESS!” And she replied, “imma spread the GAY with my gay spirit fingers!!”
I miss working with her, she was hilarious.
Moral of the story; don’t judge a book by its cover. ..especially when the book chooses your needle size 😜 (j/k for anyone who does not work in the medical field, we don’t do that. I may dislike a person, but I’m a professional and always treat patients with ❤️ and respect)

It's a stereotype that I read in the mannerisms of people. High pitched voice, likes fashion, and very talkative. Every single male that I know who fits those characteristics is straight but if they were characters on a TV show, they'd be created to be gay.
I won't appologize for my initial thoughts BECAUSE I cam control them but I'll appologize for any actions I take due to having these thoughts (usually just avoiding certain topics until I know them better). I try not to go too far with that but I'm sure my actions or inactions might seem off when I'm have the thought and am trying not to assume.

I think I'll add my character-defining favorite line from Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede- it's a conversation between a princess and her father who is upset by all the un-princesslike things she keeps doing. In this case, fencing. Her response is, "aren't I a princess?... Well, I fence... So it is too done by a princess."
In other words, your activities, looks, fashion, and the general public do not decide your gender or sexuality. You decide those things. And they come first.
If you are a man and you like to knit, men do too knit! Because you are a man and you like to knit. If you are a woman and love to work on automobiles, women do too love to work on automobiles! Because you are a woman and you love to work on automobiles. And so on.
In other, other words, society and all of its preconceptions can go hang. Women or men or somewhere in the between or beyond, don't let anyone get away with telling you how you ought to be or how you ought to act because of what you love.

Ngl, I feel like there are at least a few people in my life who've been wondering for years whether I'm lesbian or not (simply because I've never dated). Truth is... I've just never had any interest in dating (men or women). Even when I was in high school (graduated 2017... currently 24 years old). Didn't like when guys would try flirting with me. Never had a girl flirt with me so idk 🤷‍♀️.
If someone at work starts talking about sexual type stuff it makes me feel uncomfortable and I immediately try changing the subject lol 😅.
In all honesty, I'm pretty sure I am asexual 🤷‍♀️

I can relate. I'm asexual, and definitely had people ask if I was a lesbian for years, because I was never interested in sex, even though I had romantic crushes on men. I actually thought I was straight until I was 34, despite romantic crushes on men, women, and enbies, because I didn't understand what sexual attraction is.

Growing up, everyone thought my dad was gay for those same reasons. He was petite, well-groomed, and it really didn't help that he was caught dressing up like a woman once. (He was trying to sneak into a lady's dressing room. Dad's a perv.)
