  • I have an old boat of indeterminate age, since being moved to her berth in 2018 the engine hasn't been touched. Fired her up just to check she still worked before moving on to a full service.

    A Gardner will always start no matter how long it has been standing, the best diesel engines ever built!, will run forever with minimum maintenance!

    I had a boat with a Gardner best engine I ever 8 lxb had . No turbo shit, and whispering sound stationary could not hear it in the wheelhouse.

    It shouldn't have needed throttle with the cold start pushed in, just keep the rack latched till it picks up 👍, can't beat an LW or any Gardner for that matter

    Pretty painless for a year's lay up. Reminds me a bit of my old Volvo engine. Now I can see your boat is a bit rough around the edges. I love these engines.

      Very rough around the edges, but seems to be solid enough under it all.

      You won't regret buying a Gardner, nothing comes close on long life, reliability and excellent fuel economy, fishermen will tell you that any engine can get you out to sea, but a Gardner will always get you home, when turning into a strong tide and winds the Gardner digs in strong and that is great piece of mind, good luck with your project.

    What gear box do you have? (2uc 3uc twin disk) also she sound lovely
    Just a bit of advise
    Blow hot air into the intake. It helps them start up when sitting awhile
    And the lift pump needs more presses on it so get fuel straight to the injector pump

    Being a boat must have a hand throttle?

    • @popuptoaster
      @popuptoaster  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has a hand throttle and gear lever up in the wheelhouse.

  • @bovnet
    @bovnet 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    why not fit a starter button instead of fannying around

    • @popuptoaster
      @popuptoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's got one up in the wheelhouse, the engine wiring in the engine room was all removed as it was unsafe. Seems like a bit of a stupid question though, you really think this is how someone would start their boat every time?

    • @bovnet
      @bovnet 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@popuptoaster add a second starter button in the engine room. I have a bus with cab starter and engine bay starter. The engine bay starter does not enable the gearbox for safety it does however bypass all engine door and hatch safety switches. I did imagine you had one at the helm.

  • @thomascatford2627
    @thomascatford2627 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That engine would start after 50 years its a Gardner. A bit like a choke nawh nothing like a choke its an excess fuel button.

    • @popuptoaster
      @popuptoaster  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Which is what happens when you engage the choke on a petrol engine, it gets extra fuel and thus is a useful way of illustrating a point for most of may mates who grew up with cars with chokes. 🙄

    • @thomascatford2627
      @thomascatford2627 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@popuptoaster no when you engage the choke on a car it closes the choke butterfly in the carb restricting air intake and richening the fuel air mixture, an excess fuel button on an old diesel engine allows the fuel pump rack to open more than the maximum operating range, it does not restrict the air flow on the intake but does allow the fuel pump element to charge with more fuel to be injected.

    • @matui6983
      @matui6983 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When you pop the excess fuel button on any Gardner from a 1L2 up to a 6LYTi it wil allow 2-3times more fuel than the engine burns at max rpm into the cylinders for easy starting.
