Discovering Nino was such a huge moment for me. His training philosophy is very demanding on the human side of the leash, but it is incredibly rewarding and the ceiling is sky high. I also got a confirmation of many thoughts that I had at the time. Just one example of how he influenced my training for the better:
Speed of performance and learning was crippled by the amount of pointless interactions distracting and confusing the dog. Unnecessary abstractions in communication.
    ----------------------------------
    Before:
    1) Verbal
    2) Movement(phys cue or luring)
    3) Dog's performance
    4) Marker "No" + correction(neg reinforcement, pos correction or occasionally repetition of the command given)
    5) Reward system( Marker + food/toy/access to the environment )
    • "yep" - reward is coming to you, you stay still or continue to do what you're doing(duration marker) until released + rewarded
    • "free" - end of action. Come get your reward in a standard position in front of me).
    • "Break" - release from a position. Next command(rewarded) is coming
    ----------------------------------------
    Now:
    1)
    2) More emphasis on how the dog moves, how I move, where is the dog's driver at(desired reward, not necessary the one I have to offer), what's gonna be a transition between positions, what is the end position for completion etc etc
    3) Much faster performance as a result of luring at 80-90% of max speed as part of our regular training. Much more confidence and muscle memory in the dog's actions, especially helpful for fearful dogs and those with low confidence or drive.
    4) Immediate corrections applied with no marker used. Luring assistance is the one added to pos correction and neg reinforcement. Figuratively pushing the dog to a reward, not interfering. Always ends on a positive note with the dog getting its reward for either % of completion or full completion, as opposed to shutting it down with a marker and delivering corrections.
By doing so, the context is not wasted and corrections don't get in the way of the dog's performance, thus disrupting the flow of execution. It's also much easier to deliver corrections and the dog is more likely to comply with them bc it's always rewarded in the end. Success is built upon success.
    5) Reward system:
    a) "yep" is used ONLY when there's something to do next or it was used as a duration marker meaning to remain in that position until I say "free" or "break" depending on whether it's going to be rewarded upon the release.
    b) I substitute "free" with a combination of Placement and Timing whenever possible.
    • Placement of the reward is a strictly defined position of my body and hands in space with one of my hands specifically positioned to present a reward upon completion. The position is based on a final position in our movement phase that we train regularly with sharp mechanical luring like Nino does it. It allows me to fire off my next command almost immediately, preserving the drive and not distracting the dog with unnecessary words. Building a system of such motions-to-reward patterns glues together numerous behaviors that can be sequenced and executed flawlessly as a result. Nino is a master of this.
    • Timing defines how much things will happen in between the command sound and the dog receiving its reward. The shorten this window is, the more refined image of a certain behavior will be imprinted in the dog's mind, decreasing confusion of decision making while also decreasing the amount of energy wasted on resisting distractions/competitive drivers before getting what it wanted, thus resulting in higher odds of the dog doing it again. Motivation is crucial for good timing and nothing motivates better than success and this is where extensive luring comes into play as a huge factor for imprinting that image of "easy job. Easy money" in the dog's mind. Countless successful repetitions at high speed makes it an attractive option to perform this command fast and get rewarded. Positive feedback loop.
This is just a sneak peak at what I learned and applied from just observing Nino working with dogs/talking abt it online. I'd love to graduate from his master program one day. He's a master of his craft

Just found out about Nino 10 minutes ago. Thanks for your input here. Intriguing. Have trained a dutch shepherd and now a malinois. I'm just a pet owner/enthusiast but am hooked on training. It is pure joy to see when a dog generalizes something or just shows you that they are loving training/game/or way you are spending the day. I've gleaned so much from Michael Ellis, Ivan Balabanov, Omar VonMueller, Haz Othman, Nate Schoemer, Andy Krueger. You can see all of them in my dogs. No competition. Just after the relationship and engagement. Nino seems to be able to open those two areas to a whole new level. Thank you very much for the exposure.

It's amazing to watch Nino work. It's all about the speed and flow. He's not thinking about what he's doing, it's just happening like a well choreographed dance.
I know I bore dogs because I'm not going at 100mph (terriers - I'm talking to you).
We should all be more Nino, I know the dogs will appreciate it.

I just came across this video and I love it. I’ve done several live online seminars with Nino and use The same premise in my pet dog training business. I’ve been a trainer since 1980 which is a long time. But when I saw Nino for the first time I recognized this is it! This is what will engage any dog. And engagement is what dogs need. This is an art form. Thank you Nino! PS my jack Russell terrier loves this!

This is how we trained in the 70's. MINUS the treats [not invented then or science] BUT it was at DOG CLUBS, village halls, church halls. We both, dog and I, became addicted. Our trainers were fellow members who knew more, no professionals, just competitors. We became competitors too, and qualified for Crufts Champions. Never went, I was never competitive, the FUN was enough. She worked like this [energy, engagement outside the ring all the time as well] Beware the whole thing is a lifestyle, not 10/15 mins 3 times a day, 4 days a week.

    • @SigmaDogs
      @SigmaDogs  ปีที่แล้ว

"MINUS the treats [not invented then or science"
Are you saying that Treats are not part of the science of Operant Conditioning? If food is valued by the dog, the food can become part of Positive Reinforcement, just as a tug, ball or bite sleeve is.
If you have been training like this for 50 years, please feel free to share a link to some video of you and your dog or you and someone else's dog. I am always motivated to encourage and promote good training.

@@SigmaDogs My reply stated 1970. ALL engagement was with the owner. There were NO dog trainers or treats available [commercial]. We did occasionally jackpot with cubes of cheese, to mark the end of a session, but only outside. If we managed then, and I manage now. If I ask about The 4 Quadrants. I get different explanations, anyway. I didn't need them then. and I don't now.

@@patmunro3531 "If I ask about The 4 Quadrants. I get different explanations, anyway.. I didn't need them then. and I don't now.
You get 4 different explanations because you are not going to EDUCATED dog trainers. If someone doesn't want to take the time to understand the psychology and science behind training they don't have any business calling themselves a dog trainer. A trainer should understand WHY things work. You have commented on my other posts where you almost want to indicate that your eCollar is a Walkie Talkie and not an Aversive. This is what happens when people buy into bad marketing. Again, I use eCollars all the time but I don't proliferate lies.
If you want to understand the terms you can pick up most basic Psychology books and everything is clearly defined there. If you don't want to pick up a book you can find various free courses online that will educate you. Just because you don't understand doesn't mean there is some value in having a common vocabulary.
      "I didn't need them then. and I don't now."
Yeah you do.... You maybe don't need to understand the labels but you are engaging in the principles described if you are in fact training a dog. Operant Conditioning terms have value for trainers to be able to have communications about their approach.
If I had said Reward Based training, instead of +R would that have made you happier? Honest question.
Ultimately this video was put here to celebrate an Excellent approach to training. You seem to want to visit my videos simply to find flaw. Lots of people have enjoyed the video and I don't think it causes harm in any way, so why the negativity?

@@SigmaDogs So, the other 2 were uneducated? It is true, then, "put 3 dog trainers in a room together, and the y will agree on only 1 thing" I saw an exuberant, keen, puppy, highly engaged with the HAND of the trainer. Did the dog CARE WHO was holding the treat??? Seen this SO much, Watch a video of how to increase food drive. Only feed from the hand. Train only when hungry. [starve??] So like "tire your dog out before training" How would you create a 3 year relationship with a client's dog in a few weeks. Or, if the problem WAS the client's relationship, how will you be able to help the person. I am NOT looking for a dog trainer. I train my dog. I'm looking for someone to train ME.

@@l26wang This is why I have respect for Nino beside his dog training. He gave me access to a bunch of his early content for free. I am one of those people that tell it how it is, or I truly believe it to be( more accurately). I was HIGHLY critical of much of his content. Many people of his caliber, would have simply called me ungrateful and angrily stomped off. Instead, months later he contacted me and gave me access to his Master Path classes. I could not believe the difference. He had listened to most of the things I said and made the changes.
