The grinding only happens when going from 2 hi, through 4 hi straight into 4 lo. Make sure to shift into 4 hi, drive a few feet, stop, then shift into 4 low to avoid the dreaded grind.
Golden advice. Thanks!
I think you left out after stopping, shift the transmission into neutral then proceed to shift into 4 Low.
The grinding has nothing to do with the frequency of shifting into 4WDL. It is the synchronizers in the TC.
Thank you, was having that issue and didn't know what I was doing wrong.
Proud new owner of a 2021 4Runner Venture and I’m not too proud to say I was in way over my head with all the 4x4 features it came with. I experienced grinding the first day we had it when I was trying to get aquatinted and shifting from H4 to N to L4 and it left me intimidated and thinking there was something wrong. This sent me down a rabbit hole of TH-cam videos trying to get advice. I had probably watched 30 different ones before finding this. It gave me this confidence to take it for a long drive in H4 and then give it a slow spin in a parking lot in L4 and grinding is gone now. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to your future content!
Thank you for this comment! I’m happy that it has helped you in the way it has. Makes me feel great about making these videos. Happy trails!
Was it grinding after 4h was engaged and moving? Or just when you engaged the 4h? Sorry need help with our 2021
Great video...I just bought a 2023 TRD Off Road 4Runner and this info really helps understand these features. Thanks man, much appreciated.
Congrats on your 4Runner! It’s Gonna last you a lifetime of fun! I appreciate you watching!
I've seen a lot of tutorials on 4 Wheel Drive... this was the best and straight forward approach. Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate.
Thank you! Appreciate the love
Finally! A video made easy to understand and gets right to the point! Thank you so much, this was really helpful as I've been pretty intimidated looking at the extra shifter lol! Plan to go on my first overlanding trip and this was the last thing I needed to do.
Yay! Glad this was helpful for you. Go out and have some fun!
I would like to do the monthly 10 mile exercise of the 4wd. Can I just do that on a fire dirt road in 4hi ? Am I able to turn in 4hi as well?
You should be able to do that yes.
I own 2018 trd off road 4R . Not sure which one of the four terrain options is snow terrain. Maybe same as sand or mud ?
ATRAC can be activated and used *_while_* Multi-Terrain Select is on and active?
Or,
Must Multi-Terrain Select not be activated to safely use ATRAC?
2022 4Runner owner… great video & detailed explanations
Thank you!🙏
the 4runner is such a cool and unique vehicle. The rear locker is one of the most useful options there., it'll get you through almsot any terrain if you maintain speed
Yes it sure is. Very capable out of the dealer!
Thank you!! I just got a 2024 4Runner TDR Premium and we are going to take it to the river and use it drive down over loose rocks. I feel much more confident shifting through the modes after this video. Especially knowing to drive a few feet in 4 Hi before going to 4 Lo, and being in 4 Lo to switch the terrain!
Congrats and you’re welcome! Get out and enjoy! Each time you use your shifter you will get better and more confident in it. If all else fails just go back to neutral and try again. Take care!
Thank you Otzlee. I just bought a new 4Runner Off Road. You did a very good job explaining how to operate 4H-4L & the Crawl Control. I really appreciate it. Subscribed!
Glad it helped! Have fun out there!
Hello
Your video is very informative. But I have a question; is it for the stick to shake when you are driving without the 4x4? Thank you
Yes it is very normal for the shifter to feel vibrations
@@OtzleeExplains thank you for answering back.
What about clicking noises when turning the steering wheel? Just got a 2023 Off-Road and I'm getting clicking noises when turning the steering going forward and back at low speeds.
Can the rear locker be used when multi terrain is enabled? I would think you would need both rear wheels to spin for better traction.
Yes it can. I would try that if you get stuck and need the rear lockers to help get out.
Very informative video. I just received my 2024 4Runner TRD PRO. I just subscribed.
Thank you!
Very good video, bro!
Just got a 2018 TRD ORP and I’d read the manual. Seeing what I’d just read out into practice helped me retain in. Well done
Thanks pat! Appreciate you checking out the video.
Great video! Hey, where'd you get thet carbon shift knob🧐🧐
Cartrimhome use PL7P for discount if you purchase it
This is great! Exactly what I was looking for, just got my TRS off-road yesterday
Congrats! Enjoy the trails!
Bro which axle is working when on H2? Is it front or rear axle? Thanks
Rear axle when on h2
This video is awesome! Super helpful and you did a great job of explaining all the features. Thanks again!
You’re welcome!
Watched on other TH-cam videos that parking brake had to be activated when switching to 4LO?
Nope parking brake doesn't need to be on. But you do need to be completely stopped in order to switch to 4LO
You are the man! Thank you for the great explanation
No problem!
Very informative. Question, so when I’m on 4H, can I drive it like all wheel drive? Meaning can I drive it 70 plus mph?
Yes you can! You can only shift into 4H from 2H if under 55mph tho.
@@OtzleeExplains I appreciate your reply. And enjoying all your useful contents.
This is a common question that you'll see answers vary. The manual states only shifting under 55mph. The Car Care Nut who is a master Toyota technician (check out his channel) said not to go over 60mph. While people claim you can, the question is should you.
When do you press on that locking differential button next to A trac button?
Is the SR5 4wd just as good? Why or why not?
The 5th gen 4Runners are equipped with the same 4wd. The limited has a turn knob vs a shift knob on the sr5, orp, and TRD pro
Very helpful as I am considering the purchase of a 4 Runner
It’s a great car that will last thru all your adventures
Hi can you use H4 on tarmac/asphalt steep twisting road / like in the highest point in georgia, i am asking this because i went there and i just use 2H, i hesitated in using H4 because its tarmac/ asphalt not offroad/dirt and i am afraid i will ruin 4wd system/ trnsmission/ transfer case, thank you, hope you give insight it will be helpful in future adventures, thank you again.
H4 should be fine, it’s not too sensitive. Most limited models come with all time 4wd anyways. 4lo should only be used in rougher terrain
LOL..I just came to search for a video like this…literally just tried to put the shifter into 4lo (trans in neutral and vehicle stopped) and try to engage it back to the 4H position but it kept grinding when I tried to put it back..finally just stop the engine and put it back while the engine was off…does the grinding hurt the trans or gears?
A little bit of grinding is normal. Toyota does recommend going to 4lo once in awhile to keep things shifting. You should be fine bud
@@OtzleeExplainsafter I engaged into 4h then moved the truck there is some grinding or clicking noise coming from front left side. Lmk thank you much mahalos🤙🏽
My 2023 ORP just did the same thing. Went to 4Lo fine and as I’m going back into N then to 4Hi I kept getting grinding noises as I was parked.
Very informative, thank you for sharing.
Thx you!
Great video… super to the point
No problem!
Can you press the rear locker button while moving in 4L?
You should be completely stopped before engaging the lockers
Thankyou.... im just learning and was struggling with mine yesterday in the snow. Can you talk about hwy 4x4 use in snow?
Do you have multi terrain? Hwy I would not use 4LO. Stay in 4H.
Did I hear you say none of the the terrain features can be used in 4H? Do the terrain features and A-Trac only work in 4L? Thanks
The Multi-Terrain Select and Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) features are typically designed to work in conjunction with the 4WD system, particularly in 4LO mode.
Multi-Terrain Select allows you to choose different traction control modes based on the terrain you're driving on, such as mud, sand, or rock. A-TRAC is a system that helps maintain traction by controlling the brakes on wheels that are spinning freely, redirecting power to wheels with traction.
Both of these features are most effective when engaged in 4LO mode, as it provides the most torque and control for challenging off-road conditions.
Thank you for awesome explanation
You’re welcome!
I get a grinding noise going from N to H4 and shifting from L4 to H4. The grinding happens only when passing the Neutral position. You're saying this is normal. Does the grinding happen less after driving in H4 or H2 for 10 miles? My TRD Off Road is 2024 with less than 100 miles.
The grinding is normal, it should appear less frequent if you utilize your 4wd more. Congrats on your new runner!
Very helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
when shifting from 2wd to 4H you have to stay under 55mph so can you shift gears let’s say from 20mph or 30mph 2wd to 4H?
Yeah tactically you can shift from 2wd to 4H from 5-55mph. Only 4lo do you need to be at a complete stop
Would you ever need the ATrack for snow?
Yes, Toyota's A-TRAC (Active Traction Control) system can be quite beneficial for driving in snowy conditions. A-TRAC is designed to enhance traction by automatically adjusting the braking and throttle to reduce wheel slip. Here’s how it helps in snow:
1. **Improved Traction**: A-TRAC detects when wheels are losing traction and applies brakes to those wheels while redistributing power to the wheels with better grip. This is especially useful on slippery, snowy surfaces.
2. **Enhanced Stability**: By preventing wheel spin, A-TRAC helps maintain vehicle stability, which is crucial for safe driving on icy or snow-covered roads.
3. **Better Control**: A-TRAC allows for better control when starting from a stop, climbing hills, or navigating turns in snowy conditions.
4. **Automatic Operation**: The system operates automatically, so the driver doesn’t need to engage
Great explanation! Thank you
You’re welcome!
Is it a thing to use a-trac and the locker at the same time? I heard mixed opinions about this.
Don’t know if you’ve found an answer but absolutely yes you can use both at the same time. I myself always engage both if I’m stuck, they compliment each other.
Question, please, 10 miles driving on 4 high or 4 low? Once a month. On 55 mph? Or below 55 mph is good as well like street driving in 25 mph
You may not need that much frequency but it’s a good thumb of practice to engage once every few months to keep your 4wheel drivetrain nicely running. It's important to remember that four-wheel drive is not intended for use on dry pavement or at high speeds, as this can cause damage to the vehicle's drivetrain. Instead, use it only when necessary and disengage it when you return to normal driving conditions. You’ll be fine.
Thanks for the reply. So i will do it every few months 👍🏻
Thank you sir! For explaining so well! More power!
Np! Appreciate ya
Awesome info! Thanks!
No probs
Thank you
How fast can you drive on 4hi
55mph max
Question for all of you with 4runners. My is 2020 trd pro premium and when my is in 4hi and make turns left or right i hear grinding noises and it kind of stops is that normal? Is that a 4runner thing? Thanks
It shouldn’t be making any noise when turning, does it only happen when you are engaged in 4wd? Does 4lo make any sounds?
When in R, the shifter won’t move, has to be in D or N. But after entering 4H, can you reverse?
Yes you can reverse on 4H as well as 4L
Awesome..💯thanks for sharing...
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching! Appreciate the subscribe!
Do you need to brake when switching from 2wd to 4high?
No you don’t. Just stay under 55mph
@@OtzleeExplains copy. Thanks!
Hi is it normal for the 4wheel shifter move around when the car is in motion? Thanks.
You meant vibrate? Yes the 4WD knob vibrates normally
Great stuff !!!
Just FIY A-Trac does indeed also work in 4Hi, it's the rear locker which only works in 4Lo.
Thank you
Thanks for sharing 👍 awesome video
Thank you!
Very good video.
Thx Lucas
What about the buttons next to the A-TRAC button?
Rear diff lock. Only works in 4 low.
Whhat speeds for 4 lo? Under 10mph?
4lo should really not exceed 10-15mph max. 4hi should be between 50-55mph.
Thank you 🎉
Anytime
Appreciate Cha Dude!!
No probs man
👍
Thank you
You’re very welcome!
Keep it 55 mph? you mean 55 mph and under for H4?
Yeah stay under 55 for h4
Thank you
