This taught me more about my off road more than a dozen other videos combined. Thank you!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it
Nice explanation of drivetrain operation and the A Trac. I have a 16 4Runner and its a beast in any snow depth. Never had to use ATrac yet.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks, Jason! I bought my second 4Runner new in 2016. A Trail Premium, it was my retirement gift to myself after leasing for so many years. She is a wonderful vehicle, and I never knew many of these things. I get into snow quite a bit, so all of this is very helpful! She only has 11k miles, but I want to really enjoy her with the time I have left. All good!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks , great review of ATac
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
Really like your videos. I thoroughly enjoy them. Nice and well thought out explanation of the different traction control systems. Very helpful. I would like to add something I copied from another site which I feel really helped me understand both systems.
• Multi-Terrain Select (MTS). It is very different than A-TRAC. A-TRAC is a tool that works best helping you accelerate from a dead stop by using brakes to stop wheel spin.
MTS can do that as well but it is also a system that is designed for active driving.
• Multi-Terrain Select regulates the amount of wheel-spin by adjusting throttle performance and brake pressure. Note that I said "throttle performance" and brakes. A-TRAC only uses brake pressure. MTS uses both brake pressure and throttle.
• A good wav to think about it is that A-TRAC wants to eliminate wheel spin so vou can accelerate from a stop. MTS, on the other hand, will allow different amounts of wheel spin based on the conditions vou are activelv driving in. So, for example, in sand or mud some wheel spin can be good. When rock crawling, you want virtually no wheel spin.
• Here's how MTS works. You can select between four terrain types: (1) Mud & Sand,
(2) Loose Rock, (3) Mogul, and (4) Rock. The first setting allows the most wheel spin and as you move through them up to Rock, it allows almost no wheel spin.
Fantastic info. Thank you. I also have a full video on the differences between atrac and mts and when to use each. But it sums up to what you just said.
Always great content - you convinced me to buy the last 5th gen 4Runner.
Such an amazing vehicle. Congratulations
Thanks for the narrative. you nailed it.
Thank you.
A TRAC is a life saver. I had to get to the airport for a flight out to go to the Bahamas. There was a snowstorm and 2,3, 4' of snow I went through unplowed highway. I was in 4-wheel drive. I got to an accident where a truck and couple vehicles blocked the highway. I had no choice but the media strip. the snow was up to my door handles. I had switched from 4 high and shifted into A TRACK. Toyota 4 runner went into the high snow media strip and went around with no problem. This happened to me twice before i got to the airport. if I could not have gone around the accidents i would not have been able to get to my plane
4 runner is a very capable offroader for sure
Only if you have SR5 IMO. I have TRD ORP and fine that MTS is much more refined. Didn’t skip a beat in the mountains with MTS dialed
To rock mode and love it on the beach with Sand mode
Mts is great! But atrac is as close to fully locked as a toyota can get and pretty dang powerful for when you are stuck. Mts is great for not getting stuck. When Stuck atrac is your best friend and the rear locker.
@Jason-Samko do you have to engage A-trac if you want to use Multi-terrain Select? Thanks.
yeah, when you have a locked or solid diff its not like a skid steer, my first car, which i still own has a locked dana 60 rear end, at low speeds you'll never feel like the tires are pushing you a direction like you explained. at high speed it can break traction if you aren't skilled at that kind of driving. Love the explanation was wondering what that button did.
If both rears are locked on slippery surface and your fighting for traction it will do exactly as I showed. If it's actually locked. If it's lsd that's not truly locked like an e locker.
just subscribed. very informative. i have 2021 4 runner TRD pro. i use 4 hi a little in winter (illinois). i didnt realize you should engage 4 wd modes every month. My problem now is when i try to shift to 4Lo while in neutral and in 4 hi it will not allow me. any ideas? did i ruin it??? Thanks for your time
You didn't ruin it. It can be finicky, pull forward and try again if that does work try rolling at 1 or 2mph and then engage 4 low.
Have sr5 4 runner been using a-trac for a while now to get me out of situation recently just put an eaton rear locker havent tested em out yet..Question is Can You engage a-trac and rear locker at the same time? TIA
great question. Never tried both at the same time
Can you tell me how you like the Eaton e-locker? Can it be engaged without activating 4WD? How much does it cost to install one? I want to do the same for my 4Runner too.
@@AP24673 havent really tried engaging it without 4wd but it can be engage either 4H or 4L..less than 3k
Well said
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent explanation. Thank you! God Bless and stay safe. Sub.
Glad you enjoyed it
hello. can i ask you one question?I bought a used 2015 sr5 without mts because its very basic. Ii put gear on natural , L4 and then push the
A trac button but there is no indicator light on the screen. is this normal or has some issue?
@@erickim28 i believe it has to be in 4 low to use atrac
@@Jason-Samko yes I put on 4L and push the A trac button. thank you anyway
Use A-Track only in 4-low? What is the max mph one can ho with A-track? Under 50? (In not low)
I believe atrac has to be in 4 low and under 7mph to engage. But I'd check your manual to be sure. Been a long time since I used it
I see other comments. Only for 4-low
Does A-Track work on 4Hi?
No
So it's like a tank and how that turns
Great analogy. I like it

😂😂living the dream
Jesus, I just wanted to know what it was and how to use it and I got a life story
@@galactus192 isn't "what it is and how it works" it's life story
Answer it please
Mine just says trac not atrac
TRAC addresses a different problem … it limits throttle if your rear wheels are spinning due to ice or other loss of traction.
