"That just Southern, not poor..." No, she was poor. Dolly Parton grew up dirt poor in rural Tennessee. This song is a 100% true story about her mother not being able to afford a coat for her.
And she never forgot where she came from. She has done so much for the people of Sevier County. She even has an amusement park there called Dollywood. Not long before the pandemic they had a big wildfire in Gatlinburg near Smoky Mountain National Park and Dolly donated millions to people affected. Her child literacy program is called Imagination Library and it sends a free book every month to children in the program. She won an award from the Library of Congress when they gave out their 100 millionth book. And she gave $1 million for Covid vaccine research. She is a national treasure.
@@rhodesd98 Dolly’s original coat is long gone. After the success of the song, Dolly's mother made a "near duplicate" (to the best of her memory), which is the one on display at Dollywood, along with a fancier version from the movie.
My favorite Dolly story is when she got her statue in Pigeon Forge. She asked her dad what he thought about it and he said something like, It's nice but birds still poop on it. Just to kinda keep her humble a bit I guess. Yet Dolly didn't know for a while that every evening her dad would clean the statue as best he could.
As a Tennessean, Dolly is our queen! She started the imagination library for every child in Tennessee. Both my girls got a book every month in the mail until they were 5. She started it cause her dad was illiterate ❤️ she is a gem.

@@lizs.5046 Yes she did. Dolly is from Seveirville so that's her home and her people. The park was orgionally called Silver Dollar City. Here's a quote from Wikipedia: In 1986, Dolly Parton, who grew up in the area, bought an interest in Silver Dollar City. As part of the deal, the park reopened for the 1986 season as "Dollywood". In 2010, Parton said she became involved with the operation because she "always thought that if I made it big or got successful at what I had started out to do, that I wanted to come back to my part of the country and do something great, something that would bring a lot of jobs into this area." Dollywood has approximately 4,000 people on its payroll, making it the largest employer in the community
This song always makes me cry. It’s based on a real event that happened to Dolly. My mom grew up in Tennessee in the 50’s (dirt poor), and literally the exact same thing happened to my mom. Every time I hear this song, I think of the undying love of my grandma. Such a beautiful and touching song.
What flies under the radar here is the sheer perfection of Dolly's musical performance. This was filmed in the 70s, before pitch correction and fancy effects were a thing. She filmed this in one take in a studio in the UK, no backup musicians or ANY editing. Just her on the guitar and her singing. Every note on the guitar, every pitch of her voice, every storytelling element is flawless. Dolly has long been known for her ability to recreate studio-quality performance in live concerts. Very few of her time or since have been able to match her.
Her guitar skills are unreal! I can’t believe they didn’t catch it. She’s playing rhythm & lead simultaneously with perfection. No one today can do that
My Aunt was a reading tutor. She passed away last year. Since there was no funeral, I donated to Dolly's Imagination Library in her name. $25.00 sends two books per month for one year all over the world. Best money I ever spent.
Dolly Parton - what can you say? She is one of a kind. I love her music so much and have listened to her for about 50 years. My mum took me to see her in Glasgow in 2011 - she had no support act, did both halves of the show herself. I've been to a lot of concerts over the years and seen artists that do so many different styles of music but she has got to be right up there with the best I've ever seen. She explained the significance of the songs without being a time waster. She plays so many instruments and is so bubbly, her personality is infectious.

Would you believe that I was just watching a documentary on Dolly parton and had only finished a portion on this song. Such a true song written by Dolly herself. What an amazing woman. I Love her... I believe that she broke barriers for women in Country Music. and a pioneer in many ways.
@Dolly Parton It would have been sweet If it were the REAL Dolly.. BUT I am sceptical.. Besides most here knopw my name, (kinda obvious.) Have a nice day.
I love that line "One is only poor only if one choose to be." Dolly is such a treasure and her songs are little windows into her soul. This one hits me right in the feels! Especially because my mother has passed on and I have very vivid memories of her knitting a scarf and mittens for me and my twin sister. And as she knitted, she talked to us about the Bible and laid that foundation. I'm so blessed that my mother was engaged with us. So many kids today don't have that.
I have always loved the way you can hear her nails clicking on the strings as she plays the guitar. This song was about unconditional love and still brings me to tears.
This song connects to her religious background and to the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors. Joseph was cast out from his brethren. A very touching song. Dolly is a true country lady
Guys, there's poor, then there's Appalachian poor. My granny and pawpaw lived it. No electricity, no running water, no doctors. But there was always music to help make it through another week.
Dolly is the 3rd biggest purchasers of books behind Amazon and Walmart. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five. Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write Dolly started her Imagination Library in 1995. Today, her program spans five countries and gifts over 1 million FREE books EACH MONTH to children around the world.
Dolly is an international treasure. If more of us acted like her what an amazing world this would be. Love her program of giving books every month for a child's til they are 5 yrs. old. Think how many children will be able to read because of her foundation. Jordon, she's worn a wig ever since she started singing professionally. She grew up w/her family as dirt poor as you can get. No bathroom, no inside water, no electricity, no refrigeration. Wood stove for heat. Now you know why so many of us wanted you to hear this song.
No,she was dirt poor. Go hungry, pass me down clothes and shoes, patched clothes poor. But she never gave up on her dream. She is still a very humble person.
I made a sweater for one of my nieces, and she got laughed at the same way, because it was "made, not boughten". This wasn't down south, it was northern Ontario. There are small minded people everywhere. She'd gone to school wanting to show off her new sweater and came home in tears. My heart just broke for her.
Being an elementary teacher, you may have seen the book that goes with this song. I used to impress the kids by acting like I memorized a whole book and I would say the words while they read along in amazement!
Just to make context for those who have not encountered me before: I’m from the US, my husband is Swedish, I lived in Northern Germany for ten years before moving to Sweden. That said. We have a German goddaughter who is now 20. (I was there when she was born.). When she was no older than two she heard one of my Dolly Parton tapes. (No CD’s then!) From that point on, although she did not understand English, she DEMANDED to hear what she called “La La” music whenever we played music. She didn’t care what song it was so long as it was Dolly Parton and she joyfully sang along using “words” made from her understanding. We don’t know why she called it “La La Music”, but we did know that she meant Dolly Parton. As I recall, her favorite song was “Jolene”. Just another proof that Dolly Parton reaches hearts of every age, no matter someone’s spoken language. Personally, she continues to be one of my most significant role models.
They weren't lower class, Dolly's always been very clear that they were dirt poor but that they had each other's love which sustained them. Many of her songs are autobiographical but she said this one was probably the most so.
thank you for stating the above- for they were not lower class- that just sounded so mean I guess to hear it put that way- everyone it appears to me worked so very hard in her family to make ends meet-
There goes Dolly showing her amazing talent for playing guitar with those crazy acrylic nails again! That's the kind of talent that gets you famous enough to own your own theme park. lol
It has been years, a lot of years, since I've heard that song. As a single father who can't provide all I might like for my daughter it can still bring me to tears. Thank you.
Not only is Dolly a great song writer and singer, but she has also starred in many movies and t.v. specials. She has a very sharp sense of humor, is always incredibly positive and is just an all around wonderful person. The world could use a whole lot more people like her!
My love of Dolly came from my Mom. This was her favorite of Dolly’s hits because of her Mama & reference to the biblical story of Joseph. She’s been gone 6 months now and today as I listened I could almost hear her singing with Dolly. Thank you for choosing this song…just when I needed her.
I live only about 30 miles from where Dolly grew up. She is definitely the real deal. She has contributed amazing assistance to people in the area, from storybook hiking trails and age appropriate books monthly to EVERY kid living in the area, to many jobs at her Dollywood theme park to help raise folks out of poverty! She has good roots and hasn’t forgot it.

Not lower class, she was extremanly poor. They lived in a shack with her 12 brothers and sisters. Dolly is a surviver. She came from a really poor family. She is one of a kind God bless this woman.
Dolly is a great choice and person. Next female Friday- You need to do Melissa Etheridge- I'm the only one! She can really belt it out and play guitar.
Several years ago, Dolly made a movie about her Coat of Many Colors. Three movies hoping you watch someday with Dolly, Coat Of Many Colors, 9 to 5, and a real tear jerker Steel Magnolias. Dolly shines like the beacon she truly is. Thanks for playing this sweet tune.
I saw Dolly once, a number of decades ago, at LAX as she was walking through a concourse. Someone asked her to stop for a picture with their child which she did quickly. She also responded and waved to people who said hello. I still remember being impressed by how cheerful and sincere she seemed (beautiful smile); nothing forced or phony about her.
Such a good , good song. She grew up dirt poor and what I love about her is she doesn’t shy away from talking about it. She’s humble and kind and pure class.
Dolly has had an amazing career, and yes she has done Bluegrass. This song is her signature song. I've heard it thousands of times and never get tired of it. Just so beautiful!
This was one of my mom's favorite songs. I used to play and sing this with mom when she was alive. Watching this reaction choked me up, in a good way. The beauty of classic country music is the real stories. Thank you for including this.
You mentioned the Imagination Library- we did that for both of our kids, and it was great. This song is actually also a book you get at about their 4th year and if you have more than one child the books aren't just the same every month, but this is one that you will get for each child. Very nice children's book, beautiful song.
Dolly is the nicest, most talented, true artists ever. There is a Dollywood!! Dolly brags about her wigs, her book, her surgeries. She has actually laughed that there isn't an inch that hasn't been nipped, tucked, pulled,or I jected.
"Coat Of Many Colors" is a masterpiece. The lyrics are so beautiful and Dolly Parton's singing is so sincere and lovely. BTW: "It doesn't matter what someone has on, it matters what's in their heart." Very well said, Jordan.
You have to love Miss Parton gift of singing voice, you can tell especially in this song coat of many colors. It’s true story her voice tells that it genuine, her song writing is for real. She has a library for kids as daddy was illiterate, she has a amusement park in smoky mountains called Dollyworld like Disneyland to give back to like Walt Disney people, when Miss Parton in town walks around park says hi so humble.
My grandson got books from Dolly's Imagination Library when we lived in North Dakota. He loved getting books in the mail. And the books always had great subjects, like getting along with siblings, going for walks with grandparents, etc. Dolly is a national treasure.
Dolly grew up dirt poor, literally. No indoor plumbing and no electricity in those mountains. Paper on the walls to keep the winter cold out. Seeing snow through the floors and walls. One bed for too many kids. This legend is very humble and has given so much back. Her theme park is in Sevierville that employs a lot of her kin. She started the Imagination Library to combat illiteracy and it has grown tremendously through the world. When the wildfires destroyed many homes in 2016 she helped organize a benefit that raised millions and gave out checks for six months and than a final check for much more. This woman truly never forgot her home. She purchased the land her parents had their cabin on and she built a a little cabin on it. She will retreat to that when she wants. She took care of her parents, family and hometown and continues to do so.
Love Dolly. Regarding her hair,, one of my favorite quotes from her is "It takes a lot of money to look this cheap." LOL. Yes, she grew up dirt poor, one of several siblings in rural Appalachian Tennessee. So beautiful how she takes stories from her youth and puts them to meaningful and relatable songs.
Thanks for doing this song. Dolly is a queen & fairy godmother rolled into one. Her family was so poor they had no electricity, running water or indoor bathroom. Counting her 12 siblings and parents they were 15 people living in a two room "shack" in the Smoky Mountains of TN, an economically depressed area of the state. A replica of the shack, built by her brother, is located at "Dollywood". Dollywood is a theme park she had built once she became successful to bring jobs to the area she grew up in. Dollywood is the largest employer in the area and employs approximately 4,000 employees. Dolly has a long history of philanthropy. She is not only beautiful on the outside, she's beautiful inside too, talented and has a wicked sense of humor.
I think you'll like Brandi Carlile's "The Story". It's been covered by other singers but she's the original as far as I know. It was used in the movie "Lucky One".
Dolly had a piece of that coat hanging in her room on her tour bus. I had the privilege to see inside that bus. This was my Dad's favorite Dolly Parton songs. He got to have dinner with her and Jane Fonda, sometime after they finished 9 to 5.
I always thought that Melissa was really the only one that could play Janis Joplin and now they waited so long to make a movie Melissa's too old to play her now. Unfortunate.
I am 58 do not know my life without Dolly such an amazing person, humble almost 60 years in still going Strong. Alot of young bands have invited her on a few songs. That was guitar pickin.....Ohh goodness you guys another lullaby Love is like a butterfly....... so happy for you all Blessings

Guys, there's poor, then there's Appalachian poor. My granny and pawpaw lived it. No electricity, no running water, no doctors. But there was always music to help make it through another week.
She’s like a warm hug everyone needs
Y'all should do Dolly's 9-5 and watching the movie. Y'all would love it.
That movie never gets old!!
I second this on a movie reaction combo.
Great suggestion, fantastic movie. :)
I love 9 - 5 the song & movie.
That movie is so hilarious and SO relevant today!
Dolly Parton is unequivocally! one of the greatest songwriters, EVAR!
😢
My grandmother made me a sweater, at my own request, of her yarn scraps. It was beautiful.
😮😢
My mom made a lot of my clothes till I got to highschool
Being an elementary teacher, you may have seen the book that goes with this song. I used to impress the kids by acting like I memorized a whole book and I would say the words while they read along in amazement!
@@shoesagogo1 huh?
That's why we down here love Dolly. Most of us grew up that way.
thank you for stating the above- for they were not lower class- that just sounded so mean I guess to hear it put that way- everyone it appears to me worked so very hard in her family to make ends meet-
Low class, middle class, upper class... it's a societal classification not an insult.
Dolly wrote this about her childhood. There's also a movie. She's a treasure!
Thank you.
Dolly is one of the top song writers. Love it
I have the pleasure of seeing Dolly Parton in Toronto about 15 years ago and she still looked and sounded like perfection
I cry every time I hear this song,it is one of my Mom's fav,🙏
Not only is Dolly a great song writer and singer, but she has also starred in many movies and t.v. specials. She has a very sharp sense of humor, is always incredibly positive and is just an all around wonderful person. The world could use a whole lot more people like her!
Dolly’s live performance of Little Sparrow at the Ryman is mesmerizing.
It DID hurt ...the other kids laughing. Dolly is the real deal, like you guys, she really did grow up so pour. She really is a good person. No drama.
I can't wait for you to listen to "Love is Like a Butterfly" - this 70's classic will be right up your alley.
Loving your channel from Australia and had to comment about the ""We Dont do this in our house"" from Amber Bless you both the world needs more of this keep up the good work
PS Barrys a Legend HaHa
Amber, you looked like you were really feeling Dolly's story....I'm sure being a new mom deepened their meaning. It's actually pretty cool that you have artists that you feel always sing beautifully. You just move onto the meaning of the lyrics knowing their singing is going to sound perfect. Lets you dig a bit deeper under the surface. Thanks for your reaction, guys. I always enjoy listening to Dolly. Take care and be well. Peace.
@@AL-jb1mh Thanks, AL..... I have been following Jordan and Amber for quite some time and I know they already have two daughters. Being a mother/grandmother myself, my thought came from the female body's perspective after giving birth..... there's never a time a woman is more maternal than after giving birth (no matter how many babies you've had) so this where my thought came from. I'm 65 and have listened to Dolly my whole life (thanks to my Dad) and I totally agree with you about the depth and beauty of her songs and their meanings. Take care. Peace.
Dolly sings about her own life. This is a true story. She still talks about that coat.
In 2015 there was a made for tv movie called Coat Of Many Colors about this song starring Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland and Tim McGraw you should check it out. Dolly owns her own resort and amusement park in Sevier County, TN called Dollywood
It’s a fantastic movie - with Ricky Schroeder and Gerald McRaney.
"One is only poor, if you choose to be". There is a huge lesson to be learned there. Love you guys!
Dolly is amazing. She gave 1 million dollars to Vanderbilt Univ, to do research into Covid Vaccine. The Dolly reading program is awesome to. She provides them to whoever.
Not lower class, she was extremanly poor. They lived in a shack with her 12 brothers and sisters. Dolly is a surviver. She came from a really poor family. She is one of a kind God bless this woman.
My favorite TH-cam videoto watch of Dolly is her "He's Alive" which is an Easter tribute performance that is just incredible!
Amen! I've seen her perform that live. It's a precious memory I'm blessed to carry with me. Be well!
We need to teach our children at the earliest ages to be thankful for what they have. If they are truly thankful, they won’t act entitled.
Dolly grew up really poor in the mountains of Tennessee. Her early musical influences were definitely Appalachian bluegrass!
Watch the movie!! The girl that stood up for her and everyone else shunned is STILL her best friend today!!
I have never heard a Dolly Parton song that I did not love!!!! 💖💖
I met Dolly in 1983 I was 13 all I could do was cry in joy. In the 60s Dolly called my mom to thank her for the flowers my mom sent her.
Dolly is a great choice and person. Next female Friday- You need to do Melissa Etheridge- I'm the only one! She can really belt it out and play guitar.
I've been asking for Melissa Etheridge for weeks now maybe we can talk them into it.
That is a fabulous choice for Melissa, I'm the only one is powerful.
@@vickilloyd7472 Me too. I know they will be wowed when they hear her, but I can't seem to get them to listen to her. I asked many times too.
Melissa's banger is Brave and Crazy...
I've been asking for her too for months, I'm the only one and Come to my window
Several years ago, Dolly made a movie about her Coat of Many Colors. Three movies hoping you watch someday with Dolly, Coat Of Many Colors, 9 to 5, and a real tear jerker Steel Magnolias. Dolly shines like the beacon she truly is. Thanks for playing this sweet tune.
This song always reminds me how strong her faith is and how many country artists use their faith to promote themselves but very few actually live it.
Exactly.
It is UNBELIEVABLE what she has done for the state of Tennessee! Check her out. Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge.... Crazy!! She's an Angel on earth!
I saw Dolly once, a number of decades ago, at LAX as she was walking through a concourse. Someone asked her to stop for a picture with their child which she did quickly. She also responded and waved to people who said hello. I still remember being impressed by how cheerful and sincere she seemed (beautiful smile); nothing forced or phony about her.
she and Elvis(another very humble person from very poor beginnings)..........Tennessee's great favorites!
Such a good , good song. She grew up dirt poor and what I love about her is she doesn’t shy away from talking about it. She’s humble and kind and pure class.
We were all lower class but we had talents, pride and love. That's why we love Dolly. She sang for all of us.
Dolly has had an amazing career, and yes she has done Bluegrass. This song is her signature song. I've heard it thousands of times and never get tired of it. Just so beautiful!
Alannah Myles is a good one the song is called Black Velvet
Absolutely... Teach our children to have an open mind and a heart full of love and compassion.
Congrats on your baby boy Luca's arrival to your family and this world! Blessings and many thanks for this reaction video.
This was one of my mom's favorite songs. I used to play and sing this with mom when she was alive. Watching this reaction choked me up, in a good way. The beauty of classic country music is the real stories. Thank you for including this.
"Me and Little Andy" is another tear jerker song. In that she does a 6 yo girl's voice.
A very sad song too.
That is one of my other favorite dolly songs.
You mentioned the Imagination Library- we did that for both of our kids, and it was great. This song is actually also a book you get at about their 4th year and if you have more than one child the books aren't just the same every month, but this is one that you will get for each child. Very nice children's book, beautiful song.
Literally cry every time I hear it. I lost my mom to cancer when I was 23 and everything she made for me is still treasured so much. Dolly is amazing.
Y’all should also check out her “9 to 5” for a different, awesome side of Dolly!
Dolly Parton's "Hello God" is her masterpiece. It will hit you like a ton of bricks.
I just love Dolly! My favorites from her are Hard Candy Christmas, Do I Ever Cross Your Mind, and 9 to 5.
and Here You Come Again
From Here To The Moon and Back, and When I Get Where I'm Going will have you reaching for the Kleenex.
My grandson got books from Dolly's Imagination Library when we lived in North Dakota. He loved getting books in the mail. And the books always had great subjects, like getting along with siblings, going for walks with grandparents, etc. Dolly is a national treasure.
Tammy Wynette's "STAND BY YOUR MAN" is a great country classic!
My Mom loved that song. 💗
I really loved Lyle Lovett's version.
You should watch the movie Coat of Many Colors, about Dolly’s childhood and how this actually happened!🥰
I love this song because 1) it is a true story and 2) it is such a great message.
He got to have dinner with her and Jane Fonda, sometime after they finished
9 to 5.
Melissa Etheridge - "I'm The Only One" is awesome. Fun Fact: Melissa was up to play Joplin in a bio-pic but it all fell through.
I always thought that Melissa was really the only one that could play Janis Joplin and now they waited so long to make a movie Melissa's too old to play her now. Unfortunate.
She would be the perfect choice to play her.
She would be perfect! I can’t think of anyone else who could do better
There are two movies that tell you more about Dolly’s life. One is “Coat of Many Colors” and the other is a Christmas movie called “Circle of Love” … Both are just amazing and inspirational!
Here I Come Again by Dolly Parton from early 80's
You can actually see the Coat of Many Colors in her museum located in her theme park Dollywood in Tennessee which is actually the largest ticketed attraction in the state. :)
She was once asked in an interview if her hair took a long time to do. She replied that she didn’t know as she wasn’t there when it was being done.
