Dolly's version is a loving goodbye to a friend, Whitney's version was reimagined as an intense love song, same words, different contexts, both stunning. Coat of many colors is a GREAT song to show your girls, it's sweet and all about family and pride. Her most famous upbeat song is from the movie, 9 to 5, the main theme song by the same name.

She has said she still would have loved for him to have recorded it...but there was no way she was giving up 50% of her song to anyone.
Someone asked Dolly once how long it took to do her hair, she replied "I dont know, I'm never there "...love her wings! She also said one time that it takes a lot of time, money and makeup to look this trashy...lol (that comes from a childhood memory of seeing a "lady of the night" in town one day and she just thought she was so beautiful with her big hair, jewelry and make up and her momma told her that was nothing but trash and Dolly decided that's what she wanted to be when she grew up....lol
Dolly Parton's hair are wigs, which she has worn throughout her career. She created this big boobed, ditsy blonde image that people wanted when she started out when she is, in fact, a very intelligent woman and a shrewd business woman as well. I read somewhere that she said that she had written over 3000 songs at the time
She's recorded this again decades later from this first time she was sharing this song she had written for Porter Waggoner. What a story they have. He gave her a chance and her light shown so bright she had to leave. Beautiful, dear, sweet angel Dolly Parton. I would imagine her emotions were all over the place, too, when she sang this in the video. You may be interested hearing her singing it again decades later and after she's become a worldwide success. She's still so humble but she's more sure of herself with her voice, too. And Coat of Many Colors is not only a must for the vocals but she also plays the guitar with those huge fingernails and she slays it. Go now and listen!!
Dolly's version is delicate, fragile, and pure. Whitney's version is power, production, and perfection. Same words, most of the same melodic themes, but barely even the same song. Both of them are emotional as all get out, but Dolly's is the one that makes me tear up.
Hard Candy Christmas by Dolly....i love her vocal talent in this song. Well, truly, i love her voice no matter the song. Its not upbeat, neither is Coat of Many Colors. Try 9 to 5 for upbeat. She was one of the main characters in the movie 9 to 5. Another upbeat is "Why'd You Come in Here" (looking like that)
She always said "It takes a lot of money to look this cheap!" She is the REAL DEAL......She loved Whitney doing her song "MADE ME A LOT OF MONEY!!" Dolly is the QUEEN .......
Dolly Parton set several records in country music. Every time another singer breaks one of her records, she is the first person to congratulate them and tell them how proud she is of them.
It takes ages to get her hair looking that good, she's glad she doesn't have to be there when it's happening. I think she said something like that haha!

Dolly is known as the Queen of Country Music. I don’t think one is better than the other. You hit the nail on the head with your assessment. Dolly’s is very soft and gentle, to me it coveys the internal pain of leaving. Whitney’s is very powerful. To me it says I know I have to do this, but I will be ok. 💕
Dolly is one of generous and giving people the is. She has a great program called the Imagine Library where she gives free books to children around the world. She's given away over 160,000,000 books.
This song was number 1 on the charts in three different decades.
It went to the top of the country charts when Dolly first recorded it in 1974. In 1982, Dolly recorded a new version for the soundtrack of the movie “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” It hit number one on the country charts again. In 1992 Whitney Houston recorded it for the soundtrack of “The Bodyguard.” It was number one on the pop charts for 14 weeks.
I love that y'all love Dolly! I know you reacted to Linda Ronstadt, too, so I want you to listen to some Emmylou Harris first then find the album, Trio, all three of those fantastic voices together are sublime! Enjoy!
Dolly has one of the most unique voices ever. It sounds light, sweet and pure, but then you hear the incredible resonance and depth in her lower register.
Dolly is absolutely the Queen of Country. She embodies everything that country music is about; her kindness and generosity, her sincerity and humor, her talent being among the greatest of all times. But there were several women that came before her and paved the way. Loretta Lynn and Patsy cline were on the charts more than a decade before Dolly and deserve that recognition. If you haven't yet, you need to react to "Crazy" by Patsy and a couple of Loretta's number 1 hits... there are 16 to choose from! I'm a Honky Tonk Girl was her first, but "Don't Come Home Drinkin" was pivotal for her career. "Coal Miner's Daughter" was her biggest hit, but also near the end of her career. One of my favorites is "One's On The Way".
Dolly wrote "I Will Always Love You" when she was leaving the Porter Wagoner show. It was a tribute to their years of working together. A bittersweet good bye. When Whitney Houston reworked it, it was for the movie "The Bodyguard". She turned it into a love song, and put the power and passion into it.
I think Whitney's version was a self-assured declaration; Dolly's is more like words of comfort, with some sadness and regret. I don't think either one is necessarily "better" and that would be unfair to compare them like that. I think they were just two different expressions of the same song.
The bridge between Dolly's recording and Whitney Houston's is Linda Ronstadts 1975 cover from her album Prisoner In Disguise. As told by David Foster, Whitney heard Dollys song and wasn't interested in doing it, she didn't know what to do with this country song. They were also going to use the song, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted, which Whitney didn't want also.. David went into Long Beach to get a copy of Dollys recording. The record store only had Linda Ronstadt's album with the song on it. David said as soon as he heard Linda's recording he knew what they could do with the song. When Dolly found out that David/Whitney were using Linda's recording as the template for theirs, she called David on the phone to give him the final verse, which Linda did not use in her recording. Dolly felt it was important to the song. David said this was right before they were ready to record the song, so he had to add another 45 seconds to the arrangement.
True,Dolly never disappoints! LOL! I loved this song when it came out! It took me years to get used to hearing then liking Whitney's version. I came to finally love them both.
Would you believe I saw 6 other reaction videos to THIS song before yours. I am so happy I found you two doing this. You are so genuine and your love for great music is heart warming. The spoken lyric part is why I love Dolly . Whitney Houston did no justice to that part of the song. And guys... that "perfect" hair is a wig 😱
I have to add my vote for Coat of Many Colors for your next Dolly reaction. I don't know if you would characterize it as "upbeat" but it is a beautiful song, based on Dolly's personal experience and has a sweet and profound message.
Whitney sings from the heart too… They both do. But her version is so bombastic that it may get lost on some people. But that’s what happens when you do a David Foster arrangement.
@@Rosannasfriend true, the thing is dolly interprets the lyrics of the song, it's NOT a song to be BOMBASTIC to. If Whitney was a true vocalist, not just a powerful singer she would haven known this. a tender melancholy love song and ode to someone you're saying goodbye to is to be sung to the listener and relatable, it's suppose to be a feather touch, not a sledgehammer!. Course i've never been a fan of whitney's style of singing, so perhaps i'm biased! i don't want to be overwhelmed and yelled at it especially in a love song. My favorite female singer of love and romance songs was/is karen carpenter, i think that says it all.
I hears Dolly Parton’s when it came out. It is a very emotional song on the sad end. Many years later when Whitney did her version, it seem to me it was of anger. It was like she was yelling at the other person. And at the end it seem more of regret. I also love them both. Hats off to both Dolly and Whitney. Both great, great voices and talent.
Thanks for allowing many people to hear, for the first time, this very sweet song as written. I hope we'll return to hearing really great singers and musicians like what we heard back in the day.

Dolly said she's not sure if I Will Always Love You & Jolene were written the same day, just that they were next to each other on the same tape, so they were written very close together & that it was Possible they could have been written the same day.
Linda Ronstadt also does an amazing version of this song. Linda and Dolly are the best of friends, and Dolly gave Linda her blessing when Linda aske if she could record it. They, along with Emmylou Harris released two albums in the 80"s of beautiful songs with amazing harmonies between the three of them.
Another funny comment from Dolly on British tv , she was asked by the interviewer how long it took to do her hair. She answered “ I don’t know, I’m not in the room!”😂😂 ( A reference to the fact that she always wore wigs) 👍🏴
Dolly is amazing! Come Christmas time, you two need to react to her song "Hard Candy Christmas." Another good one with her is "Islands in the Stream," which was a duet she did with Kenny Rogers.
Dolly has many wigs that she wears. There are always jokes about her "chest" and she makes some of the funniest remarks herself. When Dolly sang this song in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", she was singing to Bert Reynolds as they were breaking up. That version will bring you to tears.
@@Violetr863 It was originally done as a goodbye to Porter Wagner but she also sang this song as a goodbye to her lover, Bert Reynolds in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. You probably shouldn't tell people to do their reading.
I believe it is worthwhile to mention that Dolly Dean Parton was a young woman at that time, as I recall, right about 1970. This was recorded on the Porter Waggoner Show and was one the first musical programs filmed in color. Finally, it should be noted that Dolly was dressed very modestly and not accidentally. Consider that distinction compared to the more recent productions others have made.

Dolly's original.
Dolly is the original not a version. She wrote it. The people doing music for the body guard obtained rights to use it.
@@trinityharris1337 yes, I was referring to the context of the intent in each version, same song, 2 versions 🤔
I understand. But the lyrics and song itself weren't modified to another version just the context of when it was used portrayed a more romantic love than friendly love
@@lisemzarate4029 The difference is that Whitney's is how artists fake emotion by overacting and overdoing it in every note... Dolly's version is how a real human being feels emotion...
Dolly is the KINDEST, funniest, sweetest and most talented person. She really is just as adorable as a person could be.
Yes yes yes!!! Dolly is one of the best humans to walk the face of the earth today!!! She is an angel. Her voice is so sweet. Both versions of this song make me cry. Both are equally beautiful in their own unique way!!! Whitney is an angel in heaven and Dolly is an angel that walks among us hopefully for a long time still. Thank y'all 💓
Dolly Parton is a national treasure. You can't beat this song. Her voice is so sweet, you just want to cry.
She wrote this song to Porter Wagner when she left his show, Elvis offered her over a million dollars in the 70s for the rights to all her songs, she is so classy she thanked Whitney
Dolly is nobody’s fool
Elvis wanted to record this. Dolly wanted Elvis to record this. A smart businesswoman, Dolly said no when Col. Tom Parker, Manager for Elvis, said they would need 50% of the rights to the song for Elvis to record it. She has said she still would have loved for him to have recorded it...but there was no way she was giving up 50% of her song to anyone.
How about a duet? Doll Parton and Kenny Rogers "Island in the Stream" I do believe you two will love it.
She's one Beautiful Bright Light in this world. Thank you for this reaction.
And Coat of Many Colors is not only a must for the vocals but she also plays the guitar with those huge fingernails and she slays it. Go now and listen!!
Dolly Is a Force of Nature
Interesting that J used the term "godmother."
Dolly Parton is the godmother of Miley Cyrus.
9 to 5 is an up beat hit song by Dolly.
Dolly's version is delicate, fragile, and pure. Whitney's version is power, production, and perfection. Same words, most of the same melodic themes, but barely even the same song. Both of them are emotional as all get out, but Dolly's is the one that makes me tear up.
Dolly makes me cry with this song
Whitney and Dollys versions are so different, but what they have in common is how effortlessly they both sing. It’s like it just pours out of them.
"every hair is perfect" LOL Yes, Dolly makes no bones that she loves her wigs. ;-)
It takes ages to get her hair looking that good, she's glad she doesn't have to be there when it's happening. I think she said something like that haha!
This song was written bt Dolly to her manager as a goodbye song and she truly meant every word because she thought if she stepped away from him it would be better for both of them and it was
She's a awesome lady too. She's always giving back.i love both singers and both versions of dolls song
A DJ once said of this song: When Dolly sings this song, she breaks your heart; but Whitney Houston breaks your eardrums." However, I love BOTH versions; and even Dolly loved Houston's rendition.
She made 10 million off the Whitney Houston version... You bet your butt she liked Whitney’s version...
There is so much more emotion in Dolly's voice. You can almost hear it cracking like she's about to cry.
She has such a beautiful voice besides being a beautiful person \
I love both the original AND Whitney’s rendition. Two beautiful voices, singing an amazing song!!
She has no effort in making that angelic sound, i love it. I’ve never seen this specific video of Dolly, thanks for sharing
I always wondered if Whitney even understood the lyrics to this song. It's a song of regret and melancholy, but Whitney sang it as this huge anthem. It was a powerhouse technical performance that totally missed the point of the song. But it put millions of dollars into Dolly's pocket, so that's cool.
It also screwed Whitney's voice, the way sang it.
@@nzlemming that's a lie lmao
It was for a movie you clown.
She wrote this to Porter Wagoner when she was leaving their partnership on a television program.
If you're talking about mega famous female pioneers in country music, you'd have to do Tammy Wynette: 'Stand By Your Man'.
Yep, tammy much more of a pioneer. So was the girl who sang the other 60s Mega hit. Jeez. God help me. I have the album. But want to remember the title. Epic pioneer of womens country on par with stand by your man. I am thiiiinking!!!! Yes!! Yes. I remember. Lynn Anderson- Rose Garden. Thought I had a few too many, but I remembered.
Dolly Parton. A beautiful angelic voice and amazing songwriter. Really speaks to your heart
One of the most beautiful souls on this earth.
Loretta Lynn Coal Miner's Daughter is the pioneer but she would say Patsy Cline, crazy
Funny you bring up a willie nelson song 😂
@@victorbradshaw7359 Why so funny?
@@shoesagogo1 ironic they didn't know Whitney didn't do this song you think they'll realize patsy covered willie?
@@victorbradshaw7359 But did he record it or just write it? Before he started his singing career at the age of 40, he was a songwriter in Nashville, so other singers singing his songs was his job at the time, so I don't know what point you're making.
@@MChantal76 yes it was on his demo lp guess his career started at age 27 singing
I've heard this so many times & it still gives me chills with its sweetness & sincerity.
She's actually the Godmother to Mylie Cyrus!!!... lol.. But ANY Country Woman Singer will tell U..that the "Mother" of Country Music is...non other than the incomparable...
Ms. Patsy Cline!!!!...
There were other women in families that were great Country singers..but Patsy was a one woman show.. busting her butt..touring and paving the way for the Future Women of Country Music...
✌️❤️😎🙏🌎👍👍
Jay, you said it all when you said listening to Dolly is like listening to the voice of an angel.
The simplicity of this song is absolutely beautiful, like the lady herself.
Y’all’s vibe is sooo chill and positive! Dolly is a national treasure!
I can’t listen to this song without crying. The power of this song has everything to do with her authenticity.
Dolly is one of generous and giving people the is.
She has a great program called the
Imagine Library where she gives free books to children around the world.
She's given away over
160,000,000
books.
Dolly sings it with emotion and intimacy. Whitney sings it with explosive power.
This song by Dolly always brings a tear to my eye. Her voice is that of an angel. I will always LOVE YOU DOLLY .
You gotta love Dolly!!
Side bar: I love how you can hear her smiling when she sings
Dolly wrote "I Will Always Love You" when she was leaving the Porter Wagoner show. It was a tribute to their years of working together. A bittersweet good bye. When Whitney Houston reworked it, it was for the movie "The Bodyguard". She turned it into a love song, and put the power and passion into it.
Actually Dolly Parton sang it as a love song to Burt Reynolds first (before Whitney) in 'the best little whorehouse in Texas'
I think Whitney's version was a self-assured declaration; Dolly's is more like words of comfort, with some sadness and regret. I don't think either one is necessarily "better" and that would be unfair to compare them like that. I think they were just two different expressions of the same song.
Despite appearances Dolly’s version is nuanced and sensitive.
Dolly Parton is one of the most beautiful people. Not only for her musical Talent for what she does is amazing
She is so effortless. Perfectly well said. She’s got spunk and personality but you know she’s wholesome and sweet too.
Allison Krause: when you say nothing at all . Definitely an amazing voice .
If you do ANY Allison Krause then you MUST do “Lucky One.” The angels stop whatever they’re doing when Allison sings this song.
I agree completely
AMEN!
Agree with this song selection!! Great song
Dolly really is the queen. period. the end.
You should hear the trio of Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. Three of the greatest singers and they made great music together.
When they do Bury me Beneath the Willow live it's amazing
To me, the harmonizing of that trio was something that really brought out the best in all of them.
Please please please ... react to Dolly and Kenny "Islands in the stream" you are going to love it
Should have mentioned it was written by the Bee Gee's!
There is only one person who will EVER sing this song as it should be sung-- Dolly Parton!
I have to add my vote for Coat of Many Colors for your next Dolly reaction. I don't know if you would characterize it as "upbeat" but it is a beautiful song, based on Dolly's personal experience and has a sweet and profound message.
She is the ultimate class act.
Christmas candy is wonderful
She has written over 3000 songs
My favorite Dolly quote is: “It takes a lot of time and money to look this cheap, honey,”
Dolly's version comes from the heart. A huge difference from whitney's version
exactly! dolly is singing to the listener, whitney is showing off and singing AT the listener...
@@tomschmitz261 yep
Yea Female Friday this song was written for Porter Waggoner which she was on when she was younger, dolly sang this song in the movie The Best Little Whore House in Texas anyway this song breaks me up everytime
Yeah I can see her every time I hear this singing it to Burt Reynolds in the bathroom house in Texas
When Dolly sings this song it sounds like she's singing it to you! When Whitney's Houston did her version it, it sounded like she was singing to the whole world! Both are excellent! Dolly wrote this song and Jolene on the same day! One of Dolly Parton's thing she saids, is it takes a lot of money to look this cheap! Lol if you really want to get to know who Dolly really is. Always do a live version where she tells stories about the song. Before she sings the songs! Y'all stay safe!
One of my favorite upbeat Dolly songs is called Here You Come Again.
Dolly is amazing! Come Christmas time, you two need to react to her song "Hard Candy Christmas." Another good one with her is "Islands in the Stream," which was a duet she did with Kenny Rogers.
I like the version from Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Great harmonies.
Dolly has many wigs that she wears. There are always jokes about her "chest" and she makes some of the funniest remarks herself. There is a version she sings this with Vince Gill and she sings it to Burt Reynolds in Best Little Whoehouse in Texas. She is a national treasure. You need to hear her sing You Can't Make Old Friends with her friend whom she loved, Kenny Rogers. Upbeat - 9 to 5, Romeo (with other artists). You also need to watch Forever Country.
The joke about Dolly's chest that was doing the rounds when I was a kid was "what do you call Dolly Parton in the bathtub? Islands in the stream" ...
And I guess I just dated myself rather!
Dolly
“I Don’t mind being called a dumb blonde, because I’m not dumb and I’m not blonde”
I like both. I'm waiting for someone to come along and blow us away with a new cover of it, honestly.
This is a very calm, stripped down version, she has sung this other times and kicked it up a few notches and belted it out. All of them are beautiful.
"Voice of an angel" perfectly describes Allison Krauss.
No one can sing it like Dolly ❤️
When Dolly sang this song in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", she was singing to Bert Reynolds as they were breaking up. That version will bring you to tears.
She sang that porter wagner not bert reynolds you really need to read her bio
It brings me to tears too. When she thinks that he's going to leave her.
@@Violetr863 It was originally done as a goodbye to Porter Wagner but she also sang this song as a goodbye to her lover, Bert Reynolds in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. You probably shouldn't tell people to do their reading.
Hard Candy Christmas either alone or the movie version. One of my top favs..."Still I won't let sorrow bring me way down."
@@Violetr863 > she sang it to Burt Reynolds in Best Little Whorehouse. This song was written for the movie version.
Hard Candy Christmas is one of my favorite Dolly songs.
