I saved so much money by switching to Worth A Buy reviews instead of the sponsored TH-camrs
It's a strategy that works if you're a hardcore gamer that cares mainly about mechanics and realism. If you're interested in trying less hardcore games for their artistic value, story, fun factor, etc. then you might miss out on some compelling titles. Worth a Buy has some pretty narrow requirements for what constitutes a good game, so it may or may not line up with your requirements. Personally, I have a broader set of requirements that him. I tend to agree on games like Fallout 76 being devoid of meaning, but I disagree about games that are meant to be casual and fun, like this Tomb Raider game.

Worth a buy thumb'ed down Dying Light and The Evil Within for no good reason. Which are very good games, Dying Light Enhanced edition, as of today, does not have any bugs or performance problems that Mack ranted about (but i understand why Mack thumbed it down back then, because the game truly had those bugs and performance problems in early 2015). But today it's a great game, very addicting gameplay, shittons and then some of content. Very strong 9,5 out of 10 game.
Right, The Evil Within 1. The game's framerate is not locked at 30 FPS anymore, you can set the framerate to unlimited and the game works perfectly fine even when playing it at 120 FPS or above. Forced black bars bullshit can also be easily disabled in graphics settings option, so black bars are not a problem anymore either. Good survival horror-action game. 8/10 i would say.
Meanwhile Mack thumbed up Watch Dogs 2 and fucking Assassin's Creed Odyssey (lol). Like seriously? These two poorly optimized, shitty ass console ports were thumbed up but not Dying Light and Evil Within 1 (which are optimized very well, if I do say so myself)??
Eh whatever, at least Mack gets the absolute majority of other games right. Those were the only falsely reviewed games that rustled my jimmies.

Shadow of tomb raider was mediocre as all hell. 6,5/10 and buy only during sales and if you truly care about the franchise. otherwise not worth a buy.

I grew up when there were lots of terrible games and very little artistry to most of them, so when I see a game that people dedicated a lot of time and imagination to, I can't help but feel like Mack has lost the ability to truly savor the little things.
Brett L this game was a letdown from the previous two rebooted games, if you want a good narrative critique on this game you can watch LaZzerz video on it; because he really hit every point on why this game suck in the narrative aspect.

After Halo 3, I expected as a lad to see AI in games blow our fucking minds by now. The challenges and replayability would be potentially endless with proper, next-level AI working together and the game would be a puzzle in itself, like the Original Halo Trilogy but to an Nth degree. I was excited.
Instead, AAA publishers used their resources this generation on fucking resolution bumps and loot boxes, making shit games and ruining existing franchises to make a quick dollar.
And people wonder why I'm so cynical.
IKR? Remember the FEAR AI? That game literally had me sweating in my pants as a kid on the hardest difficulty they would absolutely butt rape you. Now? 90% of the time AI in games can't even detect my presence untill I fill them with buckshot.
Gaming is so piss easy now its not even worth the effort of playing.
Ai, Physics and Positioning 3d audio got dumbed down since 00s. Fear had amazing AI - now ai in games is awful, Physics in HL2 and Crysis - now Physics in majority of games are not existent outside ragdolls, 3d audio? - what 3d audio? not a single game outside insurgency sandstorm are using well made positional audio

Is it any better than Rise of the Tomb Raider? The setting got SUPER monotonous and boring, and the gameplay was a little tedious.
I'm playing it now and its not awful but painfully average. Should have waited for a sale. AI is shit like mack said.
The challenges and new game plus helps and the graphics are great on ps4 pro and xbox one x i hope they update the AI on future patches also season pass is not worth it.
If this is average then our standards need to be reevaluated...
Rise is absolutely still the high point in the series I finished Shadow this morning very underwhelming and disappointing conclusion however it certainly had high points and fun rambo style combat encounters

Mack's too subjective and kinda bipolar in his reviews. He has a very weird, erratic taste. He slams a game for having a certain element, and praises another one despite having that very same element. Honest? Yes. Crazy, inconsistent, biased? Totally.
Tomb Raider has lost its identity. Developers keep chasing current industry trends instead of setting itself apart from other games.
I miss the old Tomb Raider games.
And it's using Denuvo, a very anti-consumer DRM. Maybe it would be worth mentioning that in future reviews.

These games will probably stop working in the future, like games from 2005-2008 or so that used these kinds of DRM don't work anymore (like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Colin McRae Rally 2005.) The DRM servers don't exist anymore, the DRM system driver isn't compatible with new versions of Windows, etc. Most developers do not go back to update a 10 year old game to remove the non-working DRM.
I have games from the 00's that just don't work anymore. I've been burned by this kind of DRM before, and I would always like to know if a game uses it so I know not to buy it. Intrusive DRM means games have a built-in expiration date, that once reached, renders the game unplayable.
No reviewers ever mention this, even though putting expiration dates on games is as anti-consumer as you can possibly get :-/

I don't want to pirate games. I have legit copies I should be able to use, since I paid for them. Going to shady sites where every other download is a virus is not something I should have to do just to play the game I paid for.

"Shadow of the Tomb Raider" - at least they got the title right. This game is merely a shadow of the original series, it's a dumbed down casual game for spoiled brats, who never got to experience the real Tomb Raider series. The same spoiled brats are probably laughing their asses off, when watching youtube videos, comparing the old games with the new ones: "OMG such bad graphics xDDD, no scripted events and no boom boom bang xddddd. Mum get me my chicken tendies, mooom pls gib credit card, i need to get sum DLC for muh Tomb Raider xdd!".
i played the original one in the 90s and the modern version does not touch that in difficulty and skill. I do like the 2013 version, found that fun but not very taxing. Lara looks very hot in that game so what have they done to her now

3 games in and this is what you get. At this point you'd expect her to be back to her original self, confident and fearless, and sporting 2 pistols. But nope, she's still pussnboots, as if she hasn't changed at all since the first game like this. This has turned into call of duty or assassin's creed, where they want to just keep doing the same thing over and over, to print money. So long as it works, you're going to have a never ending supply of these, all pretty much the same.

A few of my buddies were developers on that game. According to them, some of the people on the team were so discouraged and bored, they did literally nothing all day without anyone keeping them accountable. Its sad really.

If you think Lara Croft can climb you should see Nathan Drake he’s like a gibbon,also you do have 1080 graphics cards but you have old portable jaguar cpus creating the baseline for Ai,that and to make it easy to finish,I played the last one,same as the one before.This one I will skip.

99% of AAA sequels are creatively bankrupt, shame.
I mean the original Tomb Raider games didn't age all that well but they're way better than this - the series has gotten so homogenized; regenerating health, dull stealth, easy platforming that plays itself and whiny arse Lara who you'd think would be a fucking badass after saving the world twice before and hunting down all sorts of mercenaries, predators and otherworldly entities. I miss the old Lara, I want her back dammit where the games were an actual fun challenge. And for the love of fuck make me find health kits, so sick of regenerating health.
Seriously though, at this point she's murdered hundreds of mercenaries in one-on-one combat and outright twenty-on-one warfare. She has also completely destroyed 2 different ancient civilizations/cults/magical entities... if that doesn't turn you into a badass I don't know what will. What on earth is she crying about in this game?! Kind of the same issue as the Uncharted series, where all the gameplay that takes place seems to have no impact on the actual story... Nathan still smiling and telling jokes even though he just strangled 13 guys and had a tank destroy half a village in an attempt to kill him... I love those games, but it gets old after a while. This whole "trilogy" is supposed to be Lara turning into a badass but there's no progression form what I can see.

Every words in this review is truth. Basically the only good in this game is the graphics, and the model of Lara is decent. So yes, watch a trailer and a few screenshots that is all u need to capture the essence of this game. Do not play this if u have play any old Lara game or any classic adventure game

But I got one question: Why is she always clean?! WHY?!
I'm not talking about the parts, where you can put dirt in your face to cover yourself.
I'm talking about scratches and blood on her or dirt on her clothes, that's not so easily washed off.
She has a freaking plane crash and is covered with dried blood. Then jumps into a mud puddle and makes her way through the jungle. In the cutscene you can see scratches and blood everywhere.
Next scene: Lara takes a dip in the jungle pool to get a plane-knife. She climbs out of the water and OH WONDER! all her scratches are healed and her clothes have been machine washed with Mr. Proper or Cillit fckn Bang.
She always looks so clean. What happened? I don't remember her being clean or magically healed in the first game?

I can't understand game design where the designers come up with a challenge/problem to the player (like the diving sections) and then immediately introduce a singular, very specific way to counter/solve that challenge (the air pockets dispersed at exactly right interval to avoid drowning). What is the point of such a challenge when the entire challenge is timed perfectly around the "objects" used to solve the challenge/problem? They should at least put the air pockets away from the main course so that the player had to use their eyes to find them instead of planting them in the middle of the path.

Just was about to mention it Mack, where are her damn iconic pistols?!? I get this started as a 'how Lara became herself' series but it's now the third or what game. And not to mentions she seems to use everything BUT the kitchen sink(pistols).

As for the graphics in general i think you need to come down on games harder. Impressive? Nah! Crysis was 2007. THAT was impressive. Now 10+ years later games look barely better if at all when the crysis look should be a rough draft in 2018. As you said we have i7's and 1080's, what for?
Uhhh... yea, go back and play Crysis to refresh your memory. It looked amazing for the time, but games these days are *far* better looking in most regards. Crysis still has fucking awesome physics though... that's what I'd like to see more of. If you're seriously criticizing the graphics in a game like this you need to step back and think about how much you actually like *games* (you know, the actual gameplay part). Graphics are basically the only thing these AAA developers focus on now, and it shows.

That reviewer on Gamespot who gave it a 6 is getting hammered hard by comments for stating the truth. Sadly Mack, people "want" to be treated like sheep without even knowing what a good game is. As long as the game has flashy collectibles, unlockables and easy QTEs to crawl them through the game, they will worship it!
I read that review, and while the score might make sense, the actual review is bogus. He showered the game with praise for all the same aspects Mack here tears it apart, but seemed to give it a low score because Lara is unlikable and the gameplay is nothing new. As an independent reviewer it might have been okay, but slamming the game for unoriginal gameplay while the same website is giving 9's to sports games every year is definitely gonna piss off a lot of people lol. He doesn't actually say anything *bad* about the game though, unlike this review here, which paints a good picture of why it's getting a negative response.
In this case then he deserves the hammering. All in all what Mack says is absolutely right. Gone are the days when you would spend hours figuring out the intricates of a puzzle and enjoying the cleverness of each chamber and "actual" tomb they put you into. I miss Tomb Raider 4.
Yea, the GS review doesn't say anything negative about the tombs themselves either, just that they're an improvement over the past 2 TR games. To be fair, your original comment is probably on point, because I doubt most of the people calling out the review have actually read it... they're probably just upset at a 6 like you said lol.
Thanks for your review Mack. I had bought the Croft Edition on Steam, but only got round in playing the game after watching the long intro to the game. It was really "Cinematic" and I climbed a little more. I was Luckily enough, to know what buttons to press, since they flashed a lot. The Graphics are awesome, just like the past game that I had played before.
Fek Me, I pulled my old chair out and got ready for old School, leaned back and played (not up right) with my xbox controller.. But to be honest, when I needed to aim, I was shit at it, being compared to M+K, even for looking around.. I felt like an old lady with the xbox controller.. I had also looked for the throttle movements in the controller options, to no avail 8(.

9:00 - IDK why exactly, but Lara Croft using shotguns seems out of place to me. I know she originally had 2 pistols though in the older games, so meh..
She had shotguns and rocket launchers in the originals.

She had shotguns but if you watch the clips, when she fires point blank into a tribesman's back...with no kevlar vest on he just shrugs it off but then gets shot again further away and dies. Another unarmoured tribesman takes a shotgun blast to the face and needs a second shot to put him down...who the fuck thought that was realistic.
tomb raider 3 had a secret ledge with a shotgun hidden under what i assume was a treetop from lower down right at the start of the game

This game is getting a lot of positive reviews on Steam but as it's obvious your not into this Lara Croft reboot series, as you've stated. So It's hard to take this review serious but I've only played an hour into the game and It's been pointed out this one is steered more towards Tomb Raiding/exploring than gun play, which I like.

I think this is possibly a biased review, but there are some valid points. The rise of the tomb raider is my favorite of the three at the moment. Wait for a deep sale if you're not sure.
If you really looking into steam reviews and get effected by them you're sheep which can't create it's own opinion. 99 people may like something and 1 not. It's political paradox. There is no %100 perfect game out there and never will be. As long as it's not technical (optimization, performance) comment I'll mostly ignore them.

Especially considering dual-wielding was present in the very final moments of the first game, as a clever symbolic way of showing Lara becoming "the tomb raider", and probably being added there by a team who actually gave a fuck about what they were doing.

What developers dont get is that jumping, swinging, climbing etc are some of the most fun mechanics in games when you are actually in control. When you run to an edge and make a jump you shouldn't magnetically attach to the 'right' ledge and climb up. Remember the old tomb raider when you could grab any edge even if you couldn't climb up on it and you had to actually be holding the grab button or you would fall? You could climb around just for shits and giggles and that led to finding secrets. Here you see a mountain and think "oh wow just think of all the ways I can scale this" but the reality is there is one path to the top. Boring.
Thats the same as the originals tho....the only differencs is the locked jumping mechanic and yes the ledge grab button, at first this ones animations are weird, but if you need a reveiw to watch of this game, karak from ACG
I know ta a game with lots of flaws but I've been playing Conan exiles and you can climb everything...your stamina runs down as you move and if you run out of stamina you fall off and at a height you die...which has some potentially hindering consequences rather than just respawning..
A lot for places there are little ledges you can rest and regenerate your stamina...a lot of places in that game you have to plan routes up and when you get to the top there are some spectacular views!
Games these days such as this so called TR game are too fucking automated, scripted movies and it is soooo boring and it feels uninspired and like it is made for braindead people.
I remember. The fun came in figuring it all out. The grid system worked well since you could be sure that if the jump was two squares then by walking to the ledge, hopping back, holding forward and jump you would make it. And it made you nervous holding that button for dear life while shimmying closer to the next save point. I really dislike the magnetic grabs. Game looks phenomenal but good gameplay keeps the player in control
I think you should re review it with a 2080ti and check out those rays..just to be sure.
Well, I actually bought it today for 83 PLN (an equivalent of 17 GBP). Gotta wait to get it dowloaded from Steam, and my Internet connection is a bit on the slow side. I didn't expect it to be special, but I kinda liked the last two games, so I hoped it would be on par with them. Now, I begin to wonder if it's even worth as much money.

@@ellisscott9840 from my experience he doesn't wish he was back in the 90s 28 years ago, more a case of why haven't games advanced more in 28 years. It's a fair point, we're now flooded with pretty graphics and generic gameplay which is getting high reviews, why?
I would agree Mack can be harsh yet stating a games flaws is no bad thing, it's actually his job. It's then your option to decide if the flaws are an issue for yourself. If I bought a game he recommended and he hadn't pointed out it's shortcomings I'd be pissed. Sooner overly critical than blindly praising like 90+% of other reviewers.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the games in the 90s are indeed the best out there, 90s was once the golden age of games. Now, like movies and music, games have been commercialized and ruled by capitalism. It will take another video game crash to re-experience the 90s.
The personality thing is what bothered me the most, same as the last one. She's so quiet, and always has long dramatic pauses while she stares at something. We get it she's beautiful, but can you give her some damn character? She's complaining all the time and is just negative. Yawn
Just finnished this one, i liked rise of tomb raider much more, thanks for the honest review, i will be not playing again, even there is new game plus mode, many others games to try, one time shot, thats it, but not by paying the full price !

I wish they would mimic stealth kills from Prince of Persia The Two Thrones, where you have to left-click at a precise time point to properly stealth-execute an enemy. I am honestly surprised that mechanic wasn't picked up by other games at all. I always thought it was super fun and definitely more challenging than "pressing J."

As far as I'm concerned, Tomb Raider ended with Underworld. This reboot series, has been digital vomit.
I bought it for Ray Tracing. I always see the reboot franchise as home theater tech demos.

I'm pretty far in and my biggest problem has been, well a lot, but for one there was this big fight in the town and this kid got kidnapped and a bunch of people got killed and then Lara escapes. Then you can turn right back around, walk right back and the wall you just busted through about 2 seconds earlier is repaired and no one seems to be aware that they just watched their family get killed with spears. I mean in Tomb Raider 2013 escape from enemies was long and crossed long distances and was exciting and actually changed the world around you, but this game is basically just puzzles. I've been playing at least 6 hours and I think I've only used around 30 arrows and 100 bullets.

You know that this story is supposed to be how it all began, the first adventure of a young woman who is alone and is nearly getting killed every 5 minutes. And then you complain at the end that she is not "badass" enough...of course she isn't.
And you know what, if she were, you'd probably say something like "how is it even possible for her to be this calm and focused, she is traumatized in nearly every cutscene".
His videos are all about ranting, he'll find the stupist stuff and just go off on it, take for instance the guys not notecing their friends disapearing, that's basicly every stealth game out theres problem, but he makes it sound like this game is the first one to have this issue.

I know his videos are about ranting, but you can't rant about points that aren't valid. This is a review, it literally in the title, and reviewing a game on the basis of false or logically faulty arguments/observations invalidates the seriousness of his comments overall. Yes, he is ranting, but ranting is a STYLE of commenting, meaning that if you rant about something like "Lara only has two arms, what the fuck, every human has 3 arms, what a piece of shit game *ding*" that is ranting, yes, but the observation the rant is commenting on is faulty.
Ranting is fun, but as soon as the rant is unjustified, it becomes embarrassing, as you should really only rant about stuff if you're reeeally sure it's shite.

I agree with you about this one, but the 2013 and 2015 ones are awesome, especially the first one I've played it 3 times,one of the best games ever made in my opinion

Found a game review on steam for this that I thought was pretty interesting.
"I may be the only one that cares... but like they are pocketing TONS of profit by selling EVERYTHING about you I mean like WTF when you first log into the game they throw a bunch of agreements at you and say basically everything you do and who you are we will track and sell for profit. aka you just downloaded a bunch of tools to help them track you. Below are some highlights of some of their tracking services but note that they track your browser history your gender your prefrences for things etc - i dont show this below but read the agreement at first its like okayyyy then its like WTF mate. and they allow 3rd party tracking that piggy back off of their tracking and they are all like we dont know what 3rd parties take from you but they take stuff too go to their site to find out what - Game content i cant speak to obviously but What the actual hell to this agreement I know a lot of places have these agreements but a game? like wow... I usually watch your reviews and then play the games anyway. The big titles at least. And every time I happen to have a decent time with all of them. Your reviews help me to go into these games without looking for innovation. I accept there will be bugs or broken mechanics or whatever qualm you had with a game. You help me keep my expectations low. As a result I sincerely had a fucking blast with this game. I accepted it for what it is and it proved far better than I expected. Its a video game. Thanks Mac. Tomb Raider 1 2 and 3 were awesome. No hand holding there for sure. The heights were actually scary. I remember being genuinely lost...like you ought to be as an explorer of tombs. Puzzles were hard. And no xray fucking vision!
How long do you think it will get to get to $20. BTW Uncharted seems better.
Love this honest review. I've been a TR fan from the very first one. Back then sometimes I was stuck on the puzzles for hours. Nowadays same old same old. Sheer laziness and lack of imagination.
They've really got to fix up the way the AI react to the player. AI saying things like 'oh, I guess it was nothing' when three of their comrades are laying dead around them was acceptable in the past. But nowadays? Come on.
Surely the AI could drag their dead friends away? Call for a couple of extra soldiers?
It's crazy that this hasn't been improved.

I had this game preordered 3 months in advance seeing how its the third installment and I've played the previous two prequels. But with that being said, after the lackluster trailers and lack of a interesting story for this installment, I just knew I had to cancel my order. Now I'm glad I did.
