I really enjoyed this video. I would not have mixed most of these colors together, so I also learned to be a bit more adventurous with colo mixing. Lavender on its own is a bit bleh to me, but add that yellow and it can be magic. I like the bright green a lot - on my screen it looks more chartreuse than lime. A good chartreuse that isn’t artificial is hard to find. Thanks for sharing💕

Chartreuse is a good description too! My aim was to showcase some interesting colour mixes people might not have thought of, I'm glad that came across! And I don't like most lavenders but the Roman Szmal one is so nice to me. Granulating and less opaque. And the green is magical 😊

I really enjoy mixing greens. Well I just love mixing colours really. Play with Indanthrone blue. You'll get some incredible greens. My favourite dark is Indanthrone blue with Transparent Pyrrole Orange. Its more like a neutral tint and so rich and lovely

I love that mix! I also love phthalo turquoise with transparent pyrrole orange, makes such a beautiful rich brown

Pbr25 (Red brown by missioin gold )with pg50 cobalt turquoise by qor ) makes a lovely sagey earthy green

Yep, these two pigments play gorgeous together (I have both in Rosa Gallery WC)

Ahh I really want to try Rosa Gallery but really can't justify branching out into yet another brand for a while 😂

Oh how fun! You know I love your color mixing videos and this one was gorgeous. I took green for granted until I started pl a Ying with watercolors and discovered just how varied and beautiful (and fun to mix) they can be.
Am inthe only one who was hoping you'd mix up your entire palette to see what kind of green that would make? 😊
    Have a great week!

I'm sure it would have been a beautiful green if I mixed it all together at the end but probably dominated by the very strong Prussian Blue/Nickel Azo Yellow combination - and wouldn't it have been a tragedy to not be able to replicate it if it was beautiful! Thank you so much for the support as always 😁

Just fyi... A young lady that I get handmade paints from, had asked if I could find some NOT Opaque, non-separating cool gray and maybe blue-gray/green-gray mixes WITHOUT using white, or ANY PW’s. First, all the paints obviously need to be NOT Opaque. Second, she wanted them done with her paints..but since she has so many opaque’s (ie: her cadmium’s), she said try other brands & she can adjust her recipes to make them non-opaque.
What I found…semi-transparent nickel titanite yellow (PY53) + ultramarine (PB29) first can give you a pretty sage green…but THEN, add a bit of Cad Red Med (QOR & Schminke have semi-transparent/semi opaque..I THINK DS does too, but I don’t have it)..and the magic starts. Not only did I get a beautiful cool gray, but adjust it a bit with the blue & yellow..I got her..what I would call “muted” green, blue, and my favorite, a blue green.
She wants me to try some more mixes with her handmade earth colors today..with her new pigment Bismuth Yellow..this time, looking for granulation and separation. I’m just finding, while they are neat to swatch..the unpredictability of these separating mixes-combined with the already “mind of its own” quality of watercolor; it’s kind of impractical for most paintings. 🤷🏼‍♀️. The Ochres are also VERY easy to end up being dull mud.
    Live & learn 😁

PS I tried a dozen other reds in this mix..the cad red med was the ONLY one I get to make these colors

PSS You can still get natural gamboge; have a small chunk from China-it’s frequently used in our traditional Chinese paintings. It’s cured inside bamboo tubes, which is why you usually get it in chunks with these smooth semi-circular sides. It’s a beautiful yellow, HOWEVER, It’s highly toxic to both humans & pets. I leave mine in a covered dish up in my cabinet..but another issue is that it molds VERY easily (an occasional spray with 97-100% alcohol usually keeps it clean)
I’ve heard from some western artists who say they’ve tested it that it’s not lightfast. I don’t know if it’s the way we mount our work, the xuan paper..or maybe they weren’t testing REAL gamboge..but I can show you paintings from the 1200’s done with gamboge..the yellow is just as vibrant. I keep meaning to ask one of my tutors.. but it’s a VERY useful & mixable yellow, especially with mineral paints…REAL mineral paints (cough, cough). One of my tutors in China finally got a certain brand of “genuine” mineral paints back in April…I think most of us already knew what he’d find when he put them in his spectrograph and looked at the “naturally shimmery” colors. 😖. I WAS happy that 2 of my favorites didn’t have any plastic mica in them.
(Am & Bro)..unlike the others. 😔. Sorry I’m being cryptic, but I’ve been told a certain company is VERY touchy when folks talk about how their “genuine” paints aren’t so genuine. Even my Ame… had another synthetic pigment in it. A couple that Prof Chen had HOPED would be pure and like ancient traditional shimmery paints..had absolutely no reading of the stone whatsoever. They’re still pretty paints, but charging twice as much and insisting they’re genuine? 🤷🏼‍♀️🤔

Hi Elaine, thank you so much for this fab read! I saw it ages ago but only just got around to replying. As to your last comment... indeed I thought it was always clear that those paints did not come from those minerals... I don't really plan to ever use them just because of the expense. And I also didn't enjoy the circus surrounding that whole debate... handled very badly by the brand in question.

Hello Jules! I'd say that the first and last colors are my fav of the six. I suppose it is because of the separation which provides texture. But all of them are great greens really. I so enjoyed this video. I'm learning so much about pigments, just by hearing the names and matching them to their colors is helpful to know. Might you explain in a future post how the color system works for pigments, for example you will say something like "This as PB32 in it" What do these letters and numbers signify? It seems to be across brands, so I'm gathering it is a standard in the pigment world. Thanks so much for this post! Cheers 💓

    • @chromaphile
      @chromaphile  ปีที่แล้ว

The separating colours really seem to divide the crowd - I love how they look by themselves but I can see how they're a little complicated to use in practice. I'll mention the pigment information next time I make a video about paints! Indeed it is a standardised system and makes it possible to avoid accidental duplicate paints between brands 😊
