Sri Lankan government should pay for all the damages done to the vehicles for allowing animals to roam freely.
If I'm not mistaken that's the Kataragama -Buttala road. I just rode it on a scooter. The driver's first mistake was going down that road in the first place. There is an alternative route between the two towns and it only ads about another 20 kilometres to the journey. Part of the problem is Sri Lankans are terrible drivers. That truck driver could have stopped sooner and held back further up the road, giving himself time to reverse straight if the elephant started to approach. Instead he ended up reversing into a ditch. The whole problem starts because people are feeding wild animals.
Never mess with a hungry, angry elephant. 1. If people are feeding them, then it's going to cause issues. 2. If there is an alternative route, then cars should be encouraged to take it. 3. Another thought is fining people for feeding them.

Wild elephants in Thailand have something like agreements with rangers team and pass them on to others in the herd. It was like a truce and there was a clear pattern to passing through the streets or collecting sugar cane tax but still suspicious of each other.
