    Non-color data basically turns off gamma compensation. Gamma compensation changes the mapping of pixel values to brightness and is applied because your eye is more sensitive to slight changes in dark areas than it is to slight changes in light areas. So if it's data that won't be interpreted by your eyes, it's non-color data. (There's probably a gamma setting on your monitor, to play with it.)

    I do use fur brushes, but they tend to become extremely repetitive. The best result is to use them simply for a start, then carefully pull up the tips of each with the snake hook tool. Makes very intricate looking hair and fur. Not recommended for objects that will end up as low poly though. I make objects for 3D printing.

    • @cgboost
      @cgboost  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Totally agree. In the course, I actually sculpt the entire fur by hand with no alphas at all. This here is a bonus lesson I added for everyone that don't want to do it manually, since it takes very long.

    This method is amazing and something I would gladly take a blender course in. I just have a few questions before I pay for the course.
    -Do this method alter the shape of the original mesh (the normals)?
    - Can you animate the model afterwards?
    - Can I use this method on an elastic cartoon character with stretchy bones?
    🤩

    • @cgboost
      @cgboost  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is actually deforming the mesh using the Multires modifier. The model can be animated but usually to provide good performance of the model for animation the high level details are baked into textures. The cool thing with sculpting with Multires is that you keep the optimized lower poly mesh and the higher subdivided levels of detail can be switched on and off.

    By the way, by choosing non color data mode of texture -- you just restrict blender from converting your colors to sRGB. (so, non-color data basically means "keep linear color space", while srgb is like "compensating visibility of darker colors by taking less bright ones, to avoid colorbending"
    In blender, the colors are saved not in 8-bit color palette, but in float numbers (aka R 0.6224 G 0.7253 B 0.5923) so you wont see colorbending in srgb either (since color resolution is much bigger).
    th-cam.com/video/izoBj0b-hfE/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=MultLabs this video gives great explanation of that topic. But its voiceover is russian (it has eng subtitles in options tho)

    im probably keep using hair generator with card board texture for that kind of feather look, it can work with very low poly model, geometry node is also a good way to populate a model with other tiny one but for 3D printing the sculpt mode is probably the best way to achieve that.

    • @cgboost
      @cgboost  ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, if you want to achieve a more realistic look, other methods are better. Here I wanted to focus on how to sculpt these, so they are "baked" into the mesh. Good for printing and these kinds of things.

    Correct me here if I am wrong please: if the fur alpha brushes would have transparency where the fur begins and gets to 100% at the end of the fur we would get from zero to higher standing fur. That's how I am creating my alpha fur textures. They stand with an angle to the base shape almost as they were grown outwards and upwards away from the vase shape.
    In ur example they are looking more like stickers.
    Also the next advantage playing by the creation of alphas we can get the feel if the lower fur is coming from below the other fur. Hope makes sense...

    Awesome job mate!.... But this texture deform the mesh ?... i mean if the quads take the shape of these texture ..?

    • @cgboost
      @cgboost  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. In fact the brush displaces the mesh according to the alpha texture data (black and white hightmap). It's most commonly used with multires modifier for sculpting higher level details. There is also a new type of such textured brushes called VDM (Vector DIsplacement Maps) that allow displacing a mesh not just along the normal direction (perpendicular to the mesh) but also other directions (allowing for overhanging shapes). This is a very cool new feature (not covered in this video) but very useful for quickly applying more sophisticated shapes.

    Great tutorial. If this could be combined with the mask brush, you could avoid the overlapping. Just imagine everytime you draw an alpha it automatically masks it out. you could just place another alpha in the gap and it would look fine. Is there a way to do this without scripting? So draw + mask drawn area?

    • @cgboost
      @cgboost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Leonard! So you mean that with each fur brush stroke, it will draw the same shape of a mask over it? So that later you have all the fur strokes masked out, and you can sculpt in between? That would be super handy, indeed! I tested this a bit, and by default Blender seems not to offer this option, unfortunately.

    • @leonardliebler3510
      @leonardliebler3510 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cgboost yeah exactly! I thought about it when you placed those tiny fur patches in between. There should be a better solution for overlapping. Another approach would be smooth or flatten underneath and then draw the shape (same approach 2 brush actions at once) so it would look more like actual overlapping fur. more like placing an object (like a hair curve for example) on the surface instead of blending the secondary details. I think that would be a useful behavior for that use case. Unfortunately I dont know blenders brush engine and I'm not a good coder, so I dont know if its doable (let's call it "dual brush"). Do you know the best place to propose something like that? Maybe you can use your connections *wink wink*. I guess right now the workaround for overlapping shapes is to copy a bunch of fur objects and snap them to the surface (backside protruding into it). They could also be curves. Then bake them later. What do you think?
      *edit* I just had another idea. What about "Textured Snakehook". What I often do with stylized fur is to pull out shapes with the snakehook brush. If there would be a way to influence the shape (default is round) and give it like a "side profile" you could snakehook out hair or fur patches that are pretty much done and detailed.

    • @cgboost

      With the alphas you are changing the mesh, this is not affecting the textures. Maybe you're using a Multires modifier, which might be turned off in Object Mode. Increase the View Layers in the modifier settings.

    Is there a way to change the size of the texture brush? I have a smaller model I'm working on and changing the brush radius or texture's x/y/z in brush settings isn't helping. Works fine on the larger surface area like the back in this vid But I have to drag the mouse far out to get the fur to appear, and I'm working on a smaller area like a finger.

    • @cgboost
      @cgboost  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, you can change the brush texture size by scaling up or down the radius, or the stencil or the brush aplha in the brush settings. This of course depends on the method you are using to sculpt. If this is a problem of the brush scale reaching its minimum dimension, you might also consider to scale up your mesh just for the sculpting phase. Once you're done with sculpting, you can then scale it beck to its original dimensions.
