  • Antique Indian Swords are truly something amazing to behold. However there is a lot of confusion on how to hold them and wield them. Here Gurudev Nidar Singh, the last master of the ancient art of Sanatan Shastra Vidya goes into more detail about his favourite sword as well as how its used in conjunction with other Indian Weapons.
Traditional India had amongst the widest variety of weapons in the whole of the ancient/medieval world. Unfortunately most of our Martial Knowledge has been lost. What is left is mostly for demonstrational purposes.
Sanatan Shastra Vidya taught by Gurudev Nidar Singh is one of those exceptions. The art he teaches is still very much rooted in Traditonal Indian Culture and the Ancient/Medieval Tactics that our ancestors developed over thousands of years.

I know I'm 9 months late. But thank you so much for posting this. This may sound stupid but for years I had always wondered if the katar was ever used as companion piece to the sword. As someone who has practiced HEMA, I had a chance to experiment with a practice katar and from my perspective with European swordsmanship, it felt amazing as a parrying weapon. I wanted to check from Shastar Vidya sources to confirm if it actually was, but either I wasn't looking hard enough or I couldn't find examples of the katar as an offhand. Thank you again for posting this and finally shedding some light.

@@lighthavenindia is this style the sikh way or indian?

    • @lighthavenindia

Sikhism originated in India and adopted alot of the martial traditions that already existed in India.
So the answer is both. The Sikhs however have another art as well called Gatka.

Gunpowder coexisted with melee weapons on the battlefield into the beginning of the 20th century. Considering that gunpowder was invented in the 10th century I'd say swords had a pretty good run.
