  • It is a very common practice that might take place at our jobs where all the employees put money together for a chance to win a prize. Does that count as playing the lottery? Is this something that is permissible for us as Muslims to participate in?

    1) Buying a ticket to get something, haram.
    2) Buying a product in hopes to get the prize, haram.
    3) Buying a product to get the product, the prize is something extra, permissible.
    4) A fair competition that benefits the ummah, students pay participation fees, permissible with khilaf.
    5) Add a competitor that is not handicapped, we are clear of khilaf.

I am Harouna TRAORÉ and I live in Mali (a West African country). Here, telecom companies organize competitions by means of quizes (sometime about Islam) and as answers are sent by SMS fees are cut. And sometime it is the one who answers most questions that wins. I would like to know the Islamic ruling on this.

problem is that "defense mechanism" is not something islamic, it is a dunya phenomenon, but still maslaha....... i prefer the logic of the hanafis, the prophet peace upon him was talking about anything that is maslaha, and science competitions today bring perhaps more benefit than military itself........ its like the hadeeth of " teach your children swiming, chevalry, and archery" ....... some dumb people you all know them, no need to mention them, say that it is the only sports halal to teach you children ............. -_-
