When we think about Aang being stuck in the ice for 100 years, we don't always think about that Aang actually went from being in the storm to waking up from being in the ice like it was the next day. The memories of his friends and family are not just some distant "happened years ago" memories. They are SUPER fresh - like imagine your memories of yesterday and then imagine being told that it happened 100 years ago and all the people you talked with are long dead

My theory on the timeline for Zhao is he proposed his invasion of the North immediately after he learned about Moon Spirit at the Library, but the proposal didn’t go anywhere because of how far fetched it seemed. But once it became clear that the Avatar had returned and he was heading North, Zhao was given a promotion and a green light to proceed gathering his naval forces for his invasion. The point he got his promotion lines up with the Fire Nation learning that, so Ozai proceeded to activate a previously far fetched Hail Mary against the Northern Tribe.
This sounds right, Zhao said "I was a young lieutenant" at the time, so to his higher-ups it probably just sounded like a pipe dream from an overly imaginative junior officer.

So I guess he kept it to himself and sent his proposal to Ozai in response to the information about the Avatar, and he got his promotion in response.

That's always what I figured happened. After you mentioned Iroh not knowing (forgot about that too), I had a thought: Could Jeong Jeong have heard of the plot (or maybe it was even reported to him, since he was Zhao's teacher) and that contributed to Jeong Jeong's disillusionment with the Fire Nation? Maybe his superiors heard of it and didn't think it was a bad plan, just a waste of resources at that time...
From what you've seen, waterbenders can heal. They can use water to focus the chi in a person's body to speed up healing. Changing the phase of water from solid to liquid to gas is a basic skill, even untrained Katara could do it. And quite recently, you saw that one guy in the swamp who controlled plants by bending the water inside them. Sandbending is something every earthbender can do with ease, it's just that because of Toph's blindness and the way she sees with earthbending, sandbending is harder for her. There's also the fact the sandbenders specialize on it as they live in the desert.
I also believe that it behaves differently to standard earth and that normal earth benders use solid rocks but sand isn't it behaves differently and so it isn't more difficult it's just not as easy to bend for how she learned than normal earth like how lightning you don't just use like fire it's different
Well, sand is just finely-grained earth, so of course it's earthbending and Toph can bend it. The difference is that sand isn't as firm as earth, so it's harder for sound waves to travel accurately, which makes it harder for Toph to see. The weird thing with ice bending is that ice is technically a solid, whereas waterbending is all about fluid motion. The weird thing with lightning bending is that lightning isn't controllable, whereas firebending is all about control. The weird thing with sand bending is that sand is loose and easy to move, whereas earthbending is all about firmness and stubbornness.
And in geology they consider ice a mineral because it fits the criteria and thus glaciers are rocks. So by the science of our world Toph should be able to icebend at the poles.
A lot of reactors get stuck on seeing the Owl spirit as a "bad guy" cause he tries to kill our heroes. Glad you saw past that and could sympathize with his motives. 25:04 When Zhao was talking to Iroh during the siege of the north he mentioned an underground library. So clearly it's been buried for a looong time. 35:13 At the beginning of 'The Chase' episode Aang said Appa was shedding cause it was springtime. We found out during the winter solstice the comet comes at the end of the summer (there's 3 months of spring and 3 months of summer so the comet is approximately 6 months away) and the next eclipse is before the comet but a few months from now. ATLA isn't to specific on timeline, but there are plenty of clues to help place things. You taking the time to record these when you just really want to binge them is greatly appreciated!
Zhao said that when he found the library, he was a "young lieutenant." And when we first met Zhao in episode 3, Zuko thought he was still a captain, but he'd been promoted to commander by then. So it was definitely some years back in his career when he found the library.

i feel like the whole subset thing you were discussing was more just like- a result of where the people live (besides lightning) like water can become ice, and the southern and northern tribes do that because they live in a cold icy environment. we never saw the swamp benders ice anything, they probably can, but because of their environment they probably never thought to do that (i guess). same with earth vs sand. i suppose that a regular earthbender would have a problem in the desert, and a sandbender would have a problem on regular land. idk i’m just typing my thoughts- bending is like, a lot of imagination.
I’m so so glad you talk about Aang’s familial connection with Appa because it’s something we all know but it really hits different and puts it in perspective when Appa gets taken. You’ll see a lot more of Aang’s emotions about Appa and other aspects of his culture later on. I love that you see it from a writer’s decision point of view too. Seeing twists and cliffhangers are painful sometimes but we just love to see them from a storyteller’s view, especially when done right and resolved well, with the delicate writing of the characters involved 😌. And yes, I watched this show with its original airing. For the most part, weekly, but there would be breaks and two part specials, etc. (It’s funny cause I remember which lines and clips were in commercials getting you ready for the next episode 😁) Let me tell you, I remember watching this episode on tv and when it ended with showing Aang asking where Appa was, with that rising music and Aang’s tears falling while they realize they’re all trapped in the desert,...my 12 year old self cried. (And on TOP of that, you had to wait a week for the next ep and the internet wasn’t as active as it is now). I still get goosebumps and cry to this day. That just shows how good all the writing is 👏🏼

SPOILERS (kinda)!! I mean, it kinda still was a deus ex machina though. Sure, the existence of lion turtles was shown here, but that’s all we ever hear or see about it until later. There was nothing at all to foreshadow anything that the lion turtle did or gave aang the ability to do. Not that I didn’t enjoy the way the finale went, but the ability he showed aang still came completely out of nowhere despite the foreshadowing of the turtles existence.
About the subsets of bending, one that we already know by this point and people often forget is the healing ability for waterbenders ;) Another quick note, in the discussion, you you were theorizing about dont knowing when the eclipse would be and how quick they could get to Ba Sing Se, but Sokka pointed out when they found the date "It's just a few months away" Love your reactions man, cant wait for the next ones!

I know this was about a year ago you asked this question, if you asked “when did avatar episodes release when it still was coming out?” To put it in perspective, the show started in 2006, and I vividly remember the commercials for the show’s finale episodes in 2010
This episode always scared me as a kid. I love books and libraries and seeing this all knowing owl watching over the greatest store of knowledge ever was the greatest thing since peanut butter to little me. Then owl man does a 180 and darn near gave me nightmares, and Appa gets swiped! I came into this reaction ready to be freaked out again and...... nah. Guess I'm not bothered anymore lol. Plot appropriate that our heroes are the only ones with information that could win the war, and the “new girl” can only report that she lost the Appa. Girl’s gonna have to work here a lot longer to earn vacation time, assuming they survive. Aang used ice to free Bumi by blowing cold air onto the chain holding his containment cell.
16:00 To answer your question, yep! All the calligraphy you see in this show is real, with Mandarin and Cantonese used in specific circumstances. Just like they had martial arts experts to help with the combat forms, they had a calligraphy master write all the in-show text.
The show does use actual chinese symbols. The creators consulted an expert so that every symbol you see in the show translates to what it should say. In fact, the symbols in the show opening actually translate to some interesting bits. On the map and during the bending intros, each nation has two symbols, they translate to "Water is Benevolent", "Earth is Strong", "Fire is Fierce", "Air is Harmonious". There are also lines of symbols along the top and bottom of the map. These lines translate to "Powers are divided into Four" and "The world [all under heaven] is guided by one." On the title card for Avatar the Last Airbender when you always do "dooo do do doooo" above is a list of symbols that translate to "the spiritual medium who has descended upon the mortal world".
The Library and the Desert (next episode) were actually released on the same day (July 14, 2006) but the episode after that (The Serpents Pass) wasn't released til September

I feel like Toph's powerset just becomes more important as the series goes on. Especially once she gets her upgrade, almost none of the big plans they pull off would've worked without her specific abilities or level of power and expertise. Like Katara is a master waterbender, Sokka is a creative warrior, and Aang is the fuggin' Avatar, but Toph is the GREATEST EARTHBENDER IN THE WORLD, she's kind of on another level imo.

For the most part, Avatar was weekly. But there were some really big breaks at certain points. The show took about 3 1/2 years to fully air. The show also did 1-hour long “specials” which were two chapters back-to-back. Each book had three of them. In book 1, there was the first two episodes, the Winter Solstice episodes, and the Book II finale. In Book II, this episode and the next episode made up a one-hour special, as were the next two episodes.
They came out weekly, every Saturday, the third season was split between two years though, THAT was rough as a kid. So basically they took like a 6 month hiatus at the half way mark in season 3, you would have hated it.
Aege theorizing here got me HYPED to see him move forward. All I have to say is strap in cause this show doesn’t stop from here on out. Every episode is either action-packed, beautifully realized, or both. I love watching you react and give your in-depth thoughts, a lot of reactors kinda skip through it but you go IN DEPTH, keep up the great work man 👍

(because I think owls are cool as hell) 😁 Seriously, though, there is SO MUCH to dig into, in this episode: We get Sandbending and Sandbenders for the first time, delving deepr into the subsets of Bending styles. (BTW, without spoiling anything, you're definitely in the right ballpark with some of your theories regarding possible subcategories for the various Bending styles; all I can say is, "Keep watching.") You're also correct regarding assclown Zhao, and how he messed up Won Shi Tong's attitude towards all Humans, by destroying most of the records regarding how to fight/defeat the Fire Nation. Speaking of Won Shi Tong, Fun Fact: they call him "He Who Knows Ten Thousand Things", and his name, translated into English, literally means. "he who knows ten thousand things. We see more of Sokka Big-Braining things, figuring out exactly how to use the planetarium to find out the date of the solar eclipse in the fastest and most efficient way possible. Buuut... We also see he can be a bit of a hypocrite - Sokka, Season One, in "The Waterbending Scroll" was annoyed at Katara because "stealing is wrong". Sokka, in this episode, yoinking every piece of info that he thinks might help, "I'll take this scroll, and this piece of paper, and those other scrolls over here, and..."..... 😐🤨🙄 We're shown ,again, how insanely strong Toph is, holding up the entire HUGE-ASS library, just by the relatively small and thin tower at the top of its dome... That's like you or me trying to hold up an elephant by just a few hairs on its head, all while the rest of its herd is trying to pull him back down... our girl Toph gots some MAD power!!! The Professor dude spends his entire adult life looking for this library, then decides he's going to stay there, knowing that decision will cost him his life, by either starvation or thirst, even if Won Shi Tong doesn't kill him right away. Understandable, seeing as there is no way he could ever get back to this library, but still an odd choice. And Katara, without even a second thought, is like, "Bye; have a wonderful time!" 👋😑... Damn girl, I know y'all were under serious pressure to leave, but that's still kind of cold! And now, Appa's stolen, and they're stuck in the middle of a gigantic desert, with very few supplies, since most of them were on Appa, and probably not even any real sense of direction, to help them get back to some sort of civilization. and no ride of any kind, so they have to walk... THIS is when we fully realize what a vital part of the group Appa REALLY is, and has always been... Things are very BAD for the Gaang!... However, we know there's more episodes, and they have to make it, somehow; let's find out how they manage, in the next episode. See you there!
The other thing I realized recently- not only did they only have to check dates between then and the comet, but they also could have tried looking at how close the moon was to the sun each time they stopped, and adjusted the next guess accordingly.
Seeing your reaction to this brought back so many memories. I love that you get why it would be so awful for Aang losing the one person (because Appa is a person, fight me) he's had with him all along. Bumi is alive, yes, but he was with Appa during the storm and he spent 100 years frozen with Appa. And at the end of the day Appa was part of the air nation and other than Aang is the last piece of them. Poor Aang. You always make the best reactions. 💗

The weird thing with lightning bending is that lightning isn't controllable, whereas firebending is all about control.
The weird thing with sand bending is that sand is loose and easy to move, whereas earthbending is all about firmness and stubbornness.
And in geology they consider ice a mineral because it fits the criteria and thus glaciers are rocks. So by the science of our world Toph should be able to icebend at the poles.

35:13 At the beginning of 'The Chase' episode Aang said Appa was shedding cause it was springtime. We found out during the winter solstice the comet comes at the end of the summer (there's 3 months of spring and 3 months of summer so the comet is approximately 6 months away) and the next eclipse is before the comet but a few months from now. ATLA isn't to specific on timeline, but there are plenty of clues to help place things.

Zhao said that when he found the library, he was a "young lieutenant." And when we first met Zhao in episode 3, Zuko thought he was still a captain, but he'd been promoted to commander by then. So it was definitely some years back in his career when he found the library.

i feel like the whole subset thing you were discussing was more just like- a result of where the people live (besides lightning) like water can become ice, and the southern and northern tribes do that because they live in a cold icy environment. we never saw the swamp benders ice anything, they probably can, but because of their environment they probably never thought to do that (i guess). same with earth vs sand. i suppose that a regular earthbender would have a problem in the desert, and a sandbender would have a problem on regular land. idk i’m just typing my thoughts- bending is like, a lot of imagination.
I’m so so glad you talk about Aang’s familial connection with Appa because it’s something we all know but it really hits different and puts it in perspective when Appa gets taken. You’ll see a lot more of Aang’s emotions about Appa and other aspects of his culture later on. I love that you see it from a writer’s decision point of view too. Seeing twists and cliffhangers are painful sometimes but we just love to see them from a storyteller’s view, especially when done right and resolved well, with the delicate writing of the characters involved 😌. And yes, I watched this show with its original airing. For the most part, weekly, but there would be breaks and two part specials, etc. (It’s funny cause I remember which lines and clips were in commercials getting you ready for the next episode 😁) Let me tell you, I remember watching this episode on tv and when it ended with showing Aang asking where Appa was, with that rising music and Aang’s tears falling while they realize they’re all trapped in the desert,...my 12 year old self cried. (And on TOP of that, you had to wait a week for the next ep and the internet wasn’t as active as it is now). I still get goosebumps and cry to this day. That just shows how good all the writing is 👏🏼

I mean, it kinda still was a deus ex machina though. Sure, the existence of lion turtles was shown here, but that’s all we ever hear or see about it until later. There was nothing at all to foreshadow anything that the lion turtle did or gave aang the ability to do. Not that I didn’t enjoy the way the finale went, but the ability he showed aang still came completely out of nowhere despite the foreshadowing of the turtles existence.

I know this was about a year ago you asked this question, if you asked “when did avatar episodes release when it still was coming out?” To put it in perspective, the show started in 2006, and I vividly remember the commercials for the show’s finale episodes in 2010

This episode always scared me as a kid. I love books and libraries and seeing this all knowing owl watching over the greatest store of knowledge ever was the greatest thing since peanut butter to little me. 16:00 To answer your question, yep! All the calligraphy you see in this show is real, with Mandarin and Cantonese used in specific circumstances. Just like they had martial arts experts to help with the combat forms, they had a calligraphy master write all the in-show text.
The show does use actual chinese symbols. The creators consulted an expert so that every symbol you see in the show translates to what it should say. In fact, the symbols in the show opening actually translate to some interesting bits.
On the map and during the bending intros, each nation has two symbols, they translate to "Water is Benevolent", "Earth is Strong", "Fire is Fierce", "Air is Harmonious". There are also lines of symbols along the top and bottom of the map. These lines translate to "Powers are divided into Four" and "The world [all under heaven] is guided by one."
On the title card for Avatar the Last Airbender when you always do "dooo do do doooo" above is a list of symbols that translate to "the spiritual medium who has descended upon the mortal world".
The Library and the Desert (next episode) were actually released on the same day (July 14, 2006) but the episode after that (The Serpents Pass) wasn't released til September

I feel like Toph's powerset just becomes more important as the series goes on. Especially once she gets her upgrade, almost none of the big plans they pull off would've worked without her specific abilities or level of power and expertise. Like Katara is a master waterbender, Sokka is a creative warrior, and Aang is the fuggin' Avatar, but Toph is the GREATEST EARTHBENDER IN THE WORLD, she's kind of on another level imo.

For the most part, Avatar was weekly. But there were some really big breaks at certain points. The show took about 3 1/2 years to fully air.
The show also did 1-hour long “specials” which were two chapters back-to-back. Each book had three of them. In book 1, there was the first two episodes, the Winter Solstice episodes, and the Book II finale. In Book II, this episode and the next episode made up a one-hour special, as were the next two episodes.
They came out weekly, every Saturday, the third season was split between two years though, THAT was rough as a kid. So basically they took like a 6 month hiatus at the half way mark in season 3, you would have hated it.
rewatching your binge and it’s like rewatching for the first time lol i love it…this episode still gives me the sweats.

Seriously, though, there is SO MUCH to dig into, in this episode:
We get Sandbending and Sandbenders for the first time, delving deepr into the subsets of Bending styles. (BTW, without spoiling anything, you're definitely in the right ballpark with some of your theories regarding possible subcategories for the various Bending styles; all I can say is, "Keep watching.")
You're also correct regarding assclown Zhao, and how he messed up Won Shi Tong's attitude towards all Humans, by destroying most of the records regarding how to fight/defeat the Fire Nation.
Speaking of Won Shi Tong, Fun Fact: they call him "He Who Knows Ten Thousand Things", and his name, translated into English, literally means. "he who knows ten thousand things.
We see more of Sokka Big-Braining things, figuring out exactly how to use the planetarium to find out the date of the solar eclipse in the fastest and most efficient way possible. Buuut...
We also see he can be a bit of a hypocrite - Sokka, Season One, in "The Waterbending Scroll" was annoyed at Katara because "stealing is wrong". Sokka, in this episode, yoinking every piece of info that he thinks might help, "I'll take this scroll, and this piece of paper, and those other scrolls over here, and..."..... 😐🤨🙄
We're shown ,again, how insanely strong Toph is, holding up the entire HUGE-ASS library, just by the relatively small and thin tower at the top of its dome... That's like you or me trying to hold up an elephant by just a few hairs on its head, all while the rest of its herd is trying to pull him back down... our girl Toph gots some MAD power!!!
The Professor dude spends his entire adult life looking for this library, then decides he's going to stay there, knowing that decision will cost him his life, by either starvation or thirst, even if Won Shi Tong doesn't kill him right away. Understandable, seeing as there is no way he could ever get back to this library, but still an odd choice. And Katara, without even a second thought, is like, "Bye; have a wonderful time!" 👋😑... Damn girl, I know y'all were under serious pressure to leave, but that's still kind of cold!
And now, Appa's stolen, and they're stuck in the middle of a gigantic desert, with very few supplies, since most of them were on Appa, and probably not even any real sense of direction, to help them get back to some sort of civilization. and no ride of any kind, so they have to walk... THIS is when we fully realize what a vital part of the group Appa REALLY is, and has always been... Things are very BAD for the Gaang!... However, we know there's more episodes, and they have to make it, somehow; let's find out how they manage, in the next episode. See you there!

The other thing I realized recently- not only did they only have to check dates between then and the comet, but they also could have tried looking at how close the moon was to the sun each time they stopped, and adjusted the next guess accordingly.
Seeing your reaction to this brought back so many memories. I love that you get why it would be so awful for Aang losing the one person (because Appa is a person, fight me) he's had with him all along. Bumi is alive, yes, but he was with Appa during the storm and he spent 100 years frozen with Appa. And at the end of the day Appa was part of the air nation and other than Aang is the last piece of them. Poor Aang. You always make the best reactions. 💗
