I remember drooling over this synth when I was a poor college student. I would just put on headphones and play all the patches in the music store for an hour. Today I have 4,000X as many synth patches and infite ROM memory and sample in my soft VSTi synths. And I think I'm worse off in writing music. It's like Netflix... I spend more time browsing all the things I can watch rather than actually picking something and watching it. Decision paralysis!
So true. I spend an entire evening browsing Netflix and then give up and go to bed. I always lusted after this synth. The sheer number of sliders made it seem so awesome.
I've always felt that's the root problem for learners on digital keyboards where here are 100, 200 or more voices + loads of rhythms etc. The temptation to doodle and explore can swamp the determination to concentrate, focus and learn. Play becomes more important than playing.

I once tried this synth in the music shop back in the day, and I remember thinking that every patch was like a song in itself. You can make an entire ambient soundtrack with a few key presses. Never came across anything like it since.
I have 11 synths knocking around here, 1 of them is the JD 800...I can say there about 6 synths in my collection that blow this away sound wise and presets. I still prefer my D50 over this also. Korg M3 destroys it.

Kevin Moore used one of these when composing songs for Dream Theater's Images and Words. A virtuoso using this is half of the reason why the album is so flawless.
I bought a Korg T3 back in 1991 and the JD800 came out around that time. I lusted over this keyboard as it would have been a great complement to the Korg sound, but it was very expensive due to the fact that it had so much real time hardware. I always played it when going into a music shop at the time and I also loved the JD990. I ended up eventually owning 3 x JV1080s and an XV3080 all filled up with expansion boards. If I remember correctly, I think that Keyboard Magazine gave the JD800 their hardware innovation of the year award in 1991 because at that time, there simply weren't any synths coming out with so much real time control with all those faders, knobs and switches? Lawrence O doubtful. The D-50 has 8 bit PCMs used as transients. The JD-800 has 3MB of 12 bit PCMs in ROM and another 1MB of RAM. The D-50 has 1 EG and the JD-800 has 3. Both have 3 LFOs. The effects unit on the D-50 has chorus, reverb and EQ, while the JD-800 has chorus, reverb, EQ, delay, distortion, phaser, spectrum and enhancer. The D-50 has a resonant low pass filter. the crystal rhodes sounds almost identical to the electric piano heard in Mario 64. This is definitely the closest piano instrument that I heard that sounds like it. I love the resonating of the piano
It's possible that this synth is what was used, but that Crystal Rhodes sound was basically Roland's version of the DX7 Rhodes. Other manufacturers (like Korg) also had versions on their romplers. I think a version was also in Roland's Sound Canvas series (like the SC-88). The N64 ROM used compressed samples, I believe, so the music you heard (especially through a TV) would be less pristine than what came out of the synth.
Some of the sounds are soo dreamy I nearly fell asleep then I dropped my ipad on my nose while lying flat on the bed you nearly fall asleep then a brass sound like mr brass wakes you up

Yup, that was the sound that sold me on the JD-800. Bought mine new in 1996 and will never give it up. Get yourself a Jupiter-X and the JD-800 expansion pack. Sounds are very true to the original keyboard. Plus, the expansion pack has lots of additional sounds based on the JD-800 waveforms.
+Nicholas Seaks Ha! That happened to me once - I was at a Minimoog, keyboarding for a live band, and some people in the audience thought I was doing the sound ... coz of the knobs. (They had some complaint about the volume.)
That is the best looking keyboard ever, I have one. And I had to get a Roland A-90 controller, is the 88 keys controller with the same layout. Those 2 are what is left of my vast collection of keyboards.
I had 40 some keyboards in my rig doing commercial scores when that first came out. I bought one and liked the feel of it, but it didn’t sit well with many of the samplers and other analog synths. It demanded to be out front. I also wasn’t blown away by the stock sounds, but the amount of manipulation that was possible quickly was a game changer back then. The thing was as heavy as a Buick. 🎹
Nice presentation! I remember when the JD-800 was readily available in the early '90s. I always wanted one. I was especially interested in the easy access, real-time programmability it had with the sliders-unique on digital boards at that time.
I'm back for more. I just picked up a damaged JD-800. Everything works via MIDI, but the keybed top octave stopped working after I cleaned it. Oh well, I think I'll probably just plug it into something and eventually have a professional see if he can get it working. At any rate, I enjoy this video of yours. This synthesizer was a mandatory purchase for me. :) Your TH-cam Friend, Sam.
Theres one for sale nearby me and I am trying so hard not to buy it. He is asking a lot of money for the synth but these videos are just wowwwwwwwwwww. Good to see you out in the Wild West my friend!
@@MRTUNA Yeah, I don't check my TH-cam messages that much. Well, make sure you join the JD-800 group on Facebook. I need to clean the contacts on mine. Totally! th-cam.com/video/Zqa2mgjbOIM/w-d-xo.html
The Mario 64 e-piano is the Dyno Piano preset from the KORG 01/w .
It's like a pre-version of the same piano. The Dire Dire Docks piano comes from the JD-990
Wow that guitar blew me away! And fantastic player too!!!!
Some of the sounds are soo dreamy I nearly fell asleep then I dropped my ipad on my nose while lying flat on the bed you nearly fall asleep then a brass sound like mr brass wakes you up
Lol lol lol lol lol
i really missed this awesome synth. i used to learn and play this since early 90s. it nails every sounds effects i need. a great instrument... i missed this so much..
so glad to have one of these, Found it for $800 in 1997...
my cutoff & reso sliders started jumping like 20 points1.2.3.4.5.25.26.27...
iSapien1956672
Same problem here. And one white key just quit registering.. :'(
I'll send it to one of those guys that restore it someday.
Found mine for $600 in 2018 ... with Strings cards!!!
I SATELLITE lucky 😊
Keyboard needed a lot of work due to the red glue issue. Found an old U-20 for cheap which uses the same keys and contacts. Now fixed!!!
82 Pulsation, my gosh. So much memories.
Thanks for share it!
wow! amazing synth! Eric Persing do sound design for this one. So, you can check Omnisphere for similar sounds and more )
andivax people keep asking "why is this older keyboard better than newer Rolands? Answer: Eric Persing
Magic synth with a magic sounds! I know that JD-800 was not perfect with faders and its lifetime, but Im really want this wonderful machine! No the JD-XA, just the JD-800!!
20:21 The polysynth here is made out of polysynth!
Beside the great sounds you really play very good ! Every melody fits to the sound - Thank you for presentation !
Thank you very much!
Anch'io l'ho sempre amata da quando e' uscita nel... '90, mi pare. Dovrebbero fare una macchina simile, con tanti sliders e la tecnologia di oggi. Venderebbe, secondo me...
You're Italian!
@@AllenAndersonTaylor Yes he is!
D'accordo.
Io sto pensando di iniziare a suonare un synth... Sapresti consigliarmi e uno che abbia un suono di strings simile a quello di Como estais amigos degli Iron Maiden che si sente al secondo verso?
Preset no.21 can be found playing on -
Turn Your Radio On (by Sharespare's Sisters 1992)
Deep Forest (by Deep Forest 1993)
Radio (remix version by the Corrs 2000)
1:12 wow, that sound Awesome! Makes me want to buy one.
Thank you - yes, one is an Eventide Harmonizer and the other is an AMS delay
You can see Neil Tennant from the Pet Shop Boys playing one of these in the video for DJ Culture.
Respect for performance, balanced and sophisticated.
15:20 smash bros mele piano
You’re almost correct but it’s actually a SC-8850 and JV-1080
I really like how your playing matches the character of each sound. And that Dire Straits guitar is just boss😀👍
I wonder how many people saw this the first time and thought it was a mixing console with all the sliders on it.
+Nicholas Seaks These people wouldn't be here at the first place. They're busy watching Biber videos.
+Nicholas Seaks
Ha! That happened to me once - I was at a Minimoog, keyboarding for a live band, and some people in the audience thought I was doing the sound ... coz of the knobs.
(They had some complaint about the volume.)
What I wouldn't give for an original model D
Nicholas Seaks My father own two.
mickey thompson Lol
I love you riffing on the piano. Great tune, that! They must have used that synth because it's bang on!
KMFDM used 2-way slide for the intro to The Problem (on Angst)
ding, ding, ding
and 1974 is the intro for "Glory" on Angst as well.
That is the best looking keyboard ever, I have one. And I had to get a Roland A-90 controller, is the 88 keys controller with the same layout. Those 2 are what is left of my vast collection of keyboards.
5:05 Christina Aguilera - Beautiful (in case anyone is interested)
I had 40 some keyboards in my rig doing commercial scores when that first came out. I bought one and liked the feel of it, but it didn’t sit well with many of the samplers and other analog synths. It demanded to be out front. I also wasn’t blown away by the stock sounds, but the amount of manipulation that was possible quickly was a game changer back then. The thing was as heavy as a Buick. 🎹

先生がよく使ってたのはこれですよね、他にもライブで危機馴染みの物が
16 Fantasia 90's was my favorite! That sound was the most beautiful and most nostalgic sounding!
Ladies and gentleman, please welcome the Pet Shop Boys! VERY / RELENTLESS, the best.
Nice presentation!
I remember when the JD-800 was readily available in the early '90s. I always wanted one. I was especially interested in the easy access, real-time programmability it had with the sliders-unique on digital boards at that time.
#61 2-way slide is used on KMFDM's The Problem
salt tank eugina too
I'm back for more.
Some of the notes are going crazy again and triggering out of control. I'm using my D-50 to control it via MIDI. BTW, almost all my synthesizers were found here in the Northwest.
Fantastic sounds...there is no VST (or really good samples ?) so very unique. One of favorites synth used by rick wakeman...
Roland Zenology has it, but they also made the whole keyboard into a VST for their Cloud service
Thé synthesizer of the 90's;it's stays a must for the ear when you hear his sounds again!
pianos sound sweet on this !! oldschool rave pianos ;) 15:00 - total uk rave sound ... 20:20 sounds familiar too
Chris Nova777 garage house
Race used the M1 mainly
20:20 DJ Bobo hahaha
Le piano numérique portable ft8 1992 moins lourd moins cher
Wow… found this channel and got inspired to learn keys asa second instrument… this synth sounds amazing.
Wailing guitar = Daft Punk's "Aerodynamic"
Prodigy - Voodoo People
I swear you that when I heard the drop, I thought literally the sound was a natural electric guitar.
and Charly Lownoise - speedcity :)
Stefano Feik Filio Saavedra - Lol. I'm guessing you mustn't play guitar, then ... ? X)
It's a cool sound, but nothing like a real one ...
could be, however it's stated by several sources they used korg trident for that. obviously through distortion pedal
@ 13:56 #48 - Harlequin, though. Wow. :) Clear and lovely. AND, 21:19 - AWESOME licks there, Mark! :D
I like the one at 6:07 because it's like The Perfect Kiss by New Order!
Que belleza de teclado muy buen sonido, sin duda tener uno de estos es un sueño.
Was excited to get a new one of these in 1991. Then Nirvana hit. The end.
fuuuuuuk
It's a shame, as while Cobain was a great writer, there was no finesse in the sound of grunge.
Brian McNitt Lol
@@jgh548 hence the name....grunge there's a clue there

Really epic ethereal 80s / 90s sounds
That 53 piano patch is such a recognisable house piano sound !
I love what you are doing on this chanel! keep on!
I alsow love the 80s inkluding all the legendary synthies
Sound like something Jan Hammer would do. By the way, DJ Sasha used this synth extensibly while recording the Airdrawndagger album.
+Luis Reyes Sánchez (TsunimokiTrance) you are right i love it
Waldorf Wave too
Great pads sounds. Tony banks used this keyboard on the We Can't dance tour for the Firth of Fifth lead sounds.
