Excellent clear overview, I remember using this on a radio course in the mid 90s... funny enough I used it to make a space landing sound for a women’s radio workshop group from the BBC... Great fun , but I didn’t have a clue what synthesis was really...but I loved sampling, and would just sample the sounds to an Akai S1000 they had as this was at the time a step forward by triggering the samples on cue to the production script. compared to cueing the sound effects from 1/4 inch tape....for some reason, I had trouble saving the patches. 🤡 It’ll definitely be great to see a patch making session.
Lovely video that touched on several impressive things. I adore this machine and the time period in general where these digital synths were evolving in the late 80s/early 90s. They catch a lot of flack from purists, but there was a TON of magic in the early digital machines.
I have a JD-800 with the Dance Drums cards. Does the software version of the synth lose the Group A FX in multi mode like the JD-800 does? It's one of the biggest drawbacks of the JD-800, and the reason I never actually use Multi mode - the FX are such a part of the sounds, to remove them in order to get multitimbrality means you lose the "oomph" of the sounds.
Key scaling is as well a remnant of the D50. The D50 had though the different "Algorithms", where you could employ Ring Modulation (RM) between "Layers". There then a constant pitch across the keybed of one "Layer" would have the 'classic' RM effect. With negative pitches it was going extremely wild. It was reintroduced only with the JV1080 later in 1994. Unfortunately, the possibility of creating 'Pulse Width Modulation', which was possible on the raw separate square and saw waves in the D50 could not be handled by the JV1080 or JD800, because all waves were then only "Samples", already. The D50 was in that regard a virtual analog hybrid.
I'm so happy I found a great tutorial video for my JD-08 in your Step by Step sound design video for the JD-800 😁 - I did have to chuckle at 25:16 though 😂
I'd love a video on sound design from someone who knows this synth as well as you do! I just ordered my boutique, and this already helped me so much. I bought it for the lush pads. I heard someone emulate great 'bird-like' ambient sounds with a jd800 somewhere. this is something I would love to see, how thats done. I appreciate the insight into this beautiful synth!
Wish we could get the 128 cloud version patches onto the JD-08. We get the original 64, but the lack of compatibility between the Cloud version and the JD-08 is frustrating. They have the same tones and I could manually program the extra 64 into the JD-08 by hand, but honestly wish I’d saved $250 and bought the lifetime key instead. Hopefully some day Roland will address this - they both came out at almost the same time, so seems like an oversight.
@@Nu-trix I would really love to. I looked online and haven't found them anywhere. I'm interested by the JD-08 since I'm blind and I want a D-50 like synth. En passant, je suis au Québec également!
It's so funny You mentioned exact model of Boutique name just few days before release but I think You knew it was coming and couldnt tell at that moment ;) One question I have that bothers me - whats default value for Key Fallow slider ? Is it 50 ?
I honestly did not about the upcoming JD-08 at the time of the video. I don’t work for Roland. For the key Follow the default value change depending which key follow. The one for pitch goes from -100 to +200 if I remember well. The default would be 100. For the envelop it is a personnel chose linked to the sound that you are aiming to control.
@@Nu-trix Thanks for quick reply :) I thought You knew some rumors about release. I was asking about Key Follow for pitch in Waveform Generator section so thanks again for clearing that up.
would love your opinion at some point on if the JD-08 has enough features. Saw you briefly mentioned effects in this video and I wonder if the JD-08 can do that too? I've never had a Roland Boutique so I'm not sure if there's companion software that lets you go deeper with the Roland Boutiques
ACB is for the Analog Circuit Behavior found in the TR-08,09,TB-03, Sh-01a and all the other analog recreation ( not the SE-02, it’s real analog) and DCB is how they call the Digital Circuit Behaviour found in the D-05 and now the JD-08.
Made meany a Techno and House track on one of these in the 90s what a beast it is
This is a fantastic video. I could watch you teach this all day.
Please do more videos and teach us some sound design with the JD-800!
I think I will.
@@Nu-trix After watching your video, I'm going to go buy this thing. Now I just need them to release the JP-8000!
Thanks again!
I still have my JD800. It’s amzing
Thanks mate, whenever Roland comes up with something new I just come to your channel right away :)
ty for the incredible information on this awesome synth
Cool demo, as well for the hardware user and general Roland gear from D50 to XV5080, because they all have similarities.
Thank you so much for great editing tips.
Love this synth ta for sharing

My church would LOVE this board....
Looking forward to your review of the new JD Boutiques, especially the 800
More please! All 80s, EBM, Italo things about it please.
I don’t have the JP-8000 anymore.
Cool!!! Hi! How do we record patch change in trhe middle of a song? Thank You.
Great video, used to sell these back in the nineties. ( amazing synth, it virtually sold itself ) a tutorial video would be amazing.🎹🎶😎👍
This is the best synth ever made. I wish I could afford the new jd-08

I could not imagine it at the time!!!
Hi, Question: Can you pan of the 4 tones (left - right) like in the JD-990?
Great Vid. I have 1 simple question: How do I octave up or down the whole synth?
Very informative, thanks!
Oh this is also a synth i wish i bought 2 years ago !!
wish it was a plug out of the system 8!! other than that probably my fav legendary synth.

Ah man this is great! More JD-800 videos please! Man were you wrong about the Boutique assumption though! Haha!
Yep.
Can you do a video on the 108 wavd forms?
You would like to earn the JD-800 waveform dry?

From what I saw in the Roland videos, it seems to have all the same features, including effects.
25:15 I come from the future to tell you that you were wrong. They made a JD-08 and crammed 99% of those buttons on it. 😂
Yep.
Funny. The jd-08 boutique is just announced :-) Not sure if this is all Zen or ACB.
Yes i just saw it and it’s DCB not zencore.
@@Nu-trix Of course, it is digital. Is DCB the official term for this ?
ACB is for the Analog Circuit Behavior found in the TR-08,09,TB-03, Sh-01a and all the other analog recreation ( not the SE-02, it’s real analog) and DCB is how they call the Digital Circuit Behaviour found in the D-05 and now the JD-08.
@@Nu-trix are we sure about this? I thought it was confirmed the Boutique is zen based, identical to the new plugin, just in a case.
the hardware unit still somehow sounds better....magic maybe.

What a pitty the extension cards are not included, the strings and drums were great.
Maybe if we all ask for it?
@@Nu-trix I really hoped it would be included in the boutique, being hardware and more expensive, but it's not in there either.
Lol spoiler from the future… they did come out with a JD-08 😂😂
You sound extra french today.
What is different? The accent? The choice of words? The structure of the sentences?
@@Nu-trix more accent. I mean no ill will. Just an observation.
