@@GamingUniversityUoG No, I mean that in a lore sense. In the game’s lore, Alan had already been writing the novel for some time when he realized what was going on and added himself to the book in n a bid to stop the Dark Presence. Before Alan made himself the main character of the book, someone else probably was and I bet they original novel protagonist was Nightengale. Wake’s used to writing thrillers about troubled cops, which fits Nightengale to a T.
As someone who grew up in a small town that rich and famous people vacation at, even without being a boozy bully he would’ve received this treatment. I don’t understand the process, but locals tend to be very protective of the privacy of famous tourists. I’m excited to see if Nightingale becomes the new Barbara and we’ll get to see pieces of this story there.
Great video! You raise some very interesting points regarding the morality of Wake's use of his parautilitarian ability. As justified as it may seem to just want to escape the Dark Place, he's involving innocent people to accomplish that goal. Gonna have to think on this some more.

I think where I’m still confused is why Nightingale shows up at the end and “teases” that he’s now the personification of the dark presence as Barbara was (also Rose holding the lamp makes me think she’s turning into another Cynthia Weaver). It seems like AW2 has Nightingale as a HUGE point of interest for the story and characters so I wonder how that’ll play out. Also I’m confused about Alex Casey? I thought he was a character Wake created for books but he’s real now? Where did that come from? Do you have a video explaining?
is seems alan is using the lakes power to add a person into reality more specifically he's using his old character Alex Casey but when the story is over he'll ever disappear or need to be killed of.
They first mentioned Casey becoming real in the AWE dlc of Control. Well technically hinted before that in the Return trailer found in Quantum Break. Basically, he used the lake to make him real. If thoughts in that place become manifest, then his memories of Casey essentially make him real there. and if he can become real there, why not elsewhere?
@@GamingUniversityUoG I think also that if Alan's very thoughts made him real, maybe it was further solidified by the fact that he was well known in the Real World because of the fans of his series?
I'm not sure "defense" is quite the right word. Nightingale did horrible things, and we ultimately are responsible for the choices we make. But when we understand the humanity in people who go down terrible routes, it helps us to avoid those paths, and just maybe offers them a path to redemption.
My defense of Nightingale is solely in regards to his depth of character. I've seen a lot try to claim that he is a pointless and badly written character. Not that he is free from any moral wrongdoing. I'm trying to show how Remedy intended so much more for him that we never got to see and that may be the reason some in the community looks at the character so poorly.
I would agree if he independently made those choices. But did Nightingale actually make those choices on his own? Or was he compelled to make them by Alan, in furtherance of his story to defeat the DP?
Another way to look at Nightingale is that he's essentially Alex Casey, but he's wrong (as in his motive is actually twisted, and he's incorrect in his assumptions). Would we persecute Alex Casey for going after Alan with all we know about Max Payne (and by association Casey), or would we understand?
I finished Control AWE and Alan Wake today, so I don't have such expertise as you :) But what if Nightingale didn't exist before Alan wrote about him? Agent Casey is fictional character but he's alive in the second game, same could happen with Nightingale. Alan Wake just created a character because he needed a person to be possessed bu the darkness instead of Alice
From everything we have seen that's not how it works. Alan uses pre-existing people and nudges them into place. The issue with Casey is unique which is why I'm curious to see how it is handled. The idea would be that once the story is over, anything he created vanishes. So Nightingale would have simply vanished completely once Departure finishes. We know this is not the case because when Clay went to Bright Falls after the fact, he found a full life for him outside of the story. Because of this, my personal hypothesis for Casey is that he will die during the story. That way he is already gone from the plot before it ends. Considering the Return trailer in Quantum Break they have already foreshadowed this.
This is something Sam Lake keeps struggling with, I noticed. So much backstory has to be dug out of additional content, documents, forgotten tie-ins and the like. For new players Nightingale was just a "chaser", something to push the story forward, when in reality he's a deeply tragic character with his own motivations and rich background. The other example is the Ordinary AWE, something that SHOULD HAVE been in Control, if not as additional playable levels then as flashbacks. I found documents describing what happened more interesting than the main story itself. If that had been really shown to us then Dylan - just like Nightingale - would not have been just a walking plot device.
I'm still holding out hope that we will get some form of media that covers the Ordinary AWE. My vote is for a movie. It would be an awesome excuse to bring non game fans into the series.
Hi there! I have a question for you and I'm interested to know your opinion. Two theories are circulating on the internet regarding the creation of things using the Dark Place in the context of Alan Wake. The first theory suggests that Alan can create things and characters for his story and that Alex Casey, the agent, is a creation tool he utilizes. Additionally, some believe that Tomas Zane is the one who created Alan. The second theory proposes that Alan is clairvoyant and uses his visions as inspiration for his writing. He cannot create out of nothing but only manipulates events and characters. Like in the AWE DLC. It implies that Alex Casey is a real person, and Alan somehow had knowledge of this and wrote about him. What are your thoughts on these theories? If Zane did create Alan, it would diminish the story and the tragic nature of Alan's character.
Personally I think it is a mixture of the two. American Nightmare and the QR Code visions flat out say that alan gets information from the outside world. Some through TV sets, some through dreams. He learns of things he otherwise shouldn't know which is used to write his characters. That being said, Casey is an example of him projecting a creation out into the world that didn't previously exist. This is the first time we saw it. Zane (aka Bright Presence), says he is not the author of Alan's story. It is entirely likely that alan just wrote that Zane wrote about him. In a Meta way. But even if Zane (real person zane), did write about him, it wouldn't diminish anything for me. In the same way that Alan brought Jesse into his story, he doesn't control her actions or manifest her from nothing. She is her own person making her own choices. Alan is the same.
Rewatching this after the release of Alan Wake 2, and I got one question. **Spoilers** Why was nightingale nude when he surfaced from cauldron lake? He is the only person who is, if i remember correctly. When he was abducted by the dark presence in the original he was in full uniform. No mention of the other victims being nude, when Wake/Scratch surfaces, he is fully clothed. So why is Nightingale naked? Did something occur to him between the original Alan Wake and the sequel? Perhaps something we'll learn in the future? (Like in the Bright falls DLC) Or was it just for shock value
if Emil Hartman didn't got obsessed to the power of cauldron lake, it wont led to more lives being on stake (alan, nightingale, everyone in brightfalls) so i will forever be the #1 hater of hartman
I beat alan wake 1 when it came out and I was only a kid so it only succeeded in scaring/ creeping me out. Same with control I just didn't know it was linked. I was excited for alan wake 2 and after beating it, I am playing everything and watching everything related to it. These videos are a godsend!
Looking forward to the next video. Addressing AW's morality is worth exploring, since imo he's really a monster. At least right now; pre-Departure, it wasnt his fault because he was being controlled. But now, hes not much different than some Lovecraftian monstrosity trying to tear a way into the world by controling and sacrificing the innocent.
Is Alan wake a story of a man’s redemption? I mean his name is the title of the game and we play as him and see him the most so we assume that he is the protagonist. but after hearing this brother break it down like that and I’m about 3/4 away intoAlan Wake two….dude kinda is seeming like a jerk who wants pity…to me. Perhaps Mr. Scratch has been at the wheel most of the time?….I’m sure I’m missing something that makes him more redeemable ..right? Like ask your self…what is his motivation besides getting what he wants? Even if it means massive collateral damage……
First of all yes the narrative is about examining the main characters flaws. Forcing him to confront and overcome them. However I think it is unfair to say he does things and causes mass collateral damage out of pure selfishness. Is has 0 control over what happened in the first game. A literal lovecraftian entity took over his mind and controlled 95% of the story. The only thing Alan did of his own conscious intention was to sacrifice himself to save his wife.
It is currently being edited. These wouldnt be dropping now if the AW2 trailer didnt come out. They were all made months ago so it is not interfering with the Psychonauts release.
Hey, that's not what "titular" means. It means "in title only." So, like, a titular writer would be someone who calls themselves a writer but doesn't actually write anything (which, I guess, does apply to Alan Wake). If you want to say, "the writer whose name is in the title," that would be the eponymous writer, or the title character.
I think my favourite thing about your videos is seeing all the things you got wrong, and trying to figure out how you did it. I reached all of the same conclusions you did after years of playing every game Remedy has made (yes, even Death Rally though it isn't part of this universe, I played it as a kid), except where you were wrong. Example: Alex Casey is referred to, by you, multiple times as a fictional character over the years when it is clear he never was - Alan was never even so much as hinted as having the power to create people from whole cloth; only to take what is there and use it for his story. I have always assumed Casey was a real man that Alan pulled into his stories. This became obvious to even non-scholars in the very intro of Alan Wake II that you show here, when Casey mentions his resemblance to the character and how he has been poked at for it ever since Alan wrote the books. If that wasn't enough, the previous rules established, you know, literally everywhere in the games made the conclusion that Casey was a real man pulled in the same way as others have been (Saga being the latest, but we can also point to Serena Valdivia, Emma Sloane, Dr Rebecca Meadows, Rose, Mulligan and Thornton, and others who have been used in Alan's stories and touched by the power, on top of Casey. These were all real people - some of whom were talked to by the FBC; a fact I've never seen mentioned in any of your videos.) Anyway, just came to say that, and that you have somewhat inspired me to perhaps create my own youtube channel, since this is the best one I have found and apparently, I know more about the topic. No offense intended, just honesty. :) There are other examples, such as you being fooled along with everyone else that the "evil" Alan we see was Mr. Scratch, when he never really was. Mr Scratch was destroyed at the end of American Nightmare, and if I wasn't already certain this new "Scratch" was actually Alan possessed the moment we saw him, then the song "Herald of Darkness" totally gave away the game with the line "Show me the Champion of Light; I'll show you the Herald of Darkness" meaning they were one and the same. Mr Scratch never appeared in a single scene of Alan Wake II, because he was destroyed. The possessed Alan is only referred to by that name by the characters in the game because they are unaware of what I figured out immediately, and what most players only figured out when the game outright told them - and even then, I've seen people continue to refer to Possessed Alan as Mr Scratch when they are two distinct characters; Scratch was the manifestation of both Alan's own insecurities and his public persona as a bad boy jacked up to 10,000 - destroyed by Alice's documentary, "Sunrise" revealing to the world what Alan was really like, eliminating that idea of him in the public consciousness, as well as Alan's own acceptance of his dark half and embrace of Alice's view of him at the end of Alan's "Return" attempt in American Nightmare. This is why he wears the Clothes: the flannel he wore during their desert vacation was created by him in his mind to remind him of that time and clothe him in Alice's love and ideal of him. (Also, another hint we get that when Alan comes out of the lake, it is really Alan Wake himself in his own body, and not "Scratch"). I look forward to more of your highly entertaining and well-crafted videos. About to watch the playthrough to see if you admit all the ways you've been wrong over the years yet. :P I hope you do, and take this in the spirit it is intended, because admitting when we are wrong, and accepting new truths is a huge part of being a man, or a good human. Good luck.

I'm so glad I managed to get this out before the game. Didn't realize he'd be involved in the plot. Lucky break.
That’s why I’m here
@@RedAvery1 same same
I feel like Nightengale was the original protagonist for Departure before Alan tried to write himself free.
Definitely a secondary protagonist. AW2 will show us what this will look like considering the setup of the 2 characters in it.
When The Gale in the Night rages on GU still comes throw with the Videos 😃👍.
Respect and keep up the epic work.
Thank you good sir!
Interesting perspective. I can see that small towns tend to form ranks. Completely different sense of community that those in big cities.
Great video, love that the quality just keeps going up!
Thank you so much! We are always trying out new techniques.
I really felt bad for Nightingale despite being a enemy to Alan!
Once we get the full story thenpoor guy was just trying to protect people but had no clue what was happening so he hunted an innocent man.
Great video! You raise some very interesting points regarding the morality of Wake's use of his parautilitarian ability. As justified as it may seem to just want to escape the Dark Place, he's involving innocent people to accomplish that goal. Gonna have to think on this some more.
It is a weight around his neck whenever he uses this power. Can't really get away from it.
We are getting closer than ever before comrade. This was a great insight in his theme
Once it comes out I'll see you in the other side! AW2 is going to be nuts.
For me its 11 am and I am watching your video while preparing my meal. Can't wait for your videos and of course Alan Wake 2! Greetings from Germany, you have a lot of german viewers haha
Greetings from the US! Hope your afternoon is going well over there.
I'm so looking forward to being able to make Alan Wake 2 content
just read the book Alan wake files recently, had it since I bought the special edition for x360 12 years ago 😂, good stuff.
you raised some interesting questions, putting Wake into Nightingale's shoes helps to look at him with fresh eyes
Shouda turned left instead of right?
Well to be fair, in that case there was-- eep! There's something on your back!
Definitely one of the best episodes of Series 4 hands down.
I am so convinced that Sam Lake is Mr Door from Dylan's dream, he was in the Alan Wake interview and now in Alan Wake 2, there has to be something up with him, or he just put himself there for fun
Also I want to thank you for making these videos, I would have never enjoyed Remedy's stories this much without you to find the unknowns. Much respect
We just got the screen shots of Mr. Door and a hint of his involvement in Alan Wake 2
Hows it feel being way off base
YES. Awesome videos as always! Looking forward to the next in this series. Happy to be a Patreon supporter ❤
Thank you so much for the support! I'm glad you enjoy all the work we do here.
Amazing video as always
I'm going to be having a field day mmonce thise games come out.
I just want to say thank you for everything you do on this channel!! Every time I see a new remedy related video I get so excited, and I cannot wait for everything you’re gonna cover leading up to Alan Wake 2. This channel is everything I have been looking for.
Great video as always;)
Agent nightingale appears at the end of Alan wake could he be a dark person aswell like that Dr Hartman guy
According to the new trailer, Nightingale is presumed dead. But it wouldn't surprise me if he makes an appearance.
@@GamingUniversityUoG nightingale may be dead after he sacrifice his soul to save Alan wake to get out of the dark world but I still fall back on Alan trapped in that house and we gotta save him and he can't escape the house until something been cleansed and jack Joyce and Jesse faden help him I want credit if I am right or close enough to it dispite the lack of evidence on my behalf but if I am right I want gaming university to put it in there libraries I predicted future events yeah your probly smiling like that's a long shot buddy but if I am right in anything I posted I want it written on gaming library
Wasn’t that guy in the dinner window being that dead sherif that loved the coffee girl?
13:32. Wait, was that an Alan Wick "Yeahh"?
Love this!!! I can't wait for more!!
Next one is already finished and going up shortly.
Nightingale is such a tragic character. Especially do after playing Alan Wake 2.
Here you go.
th-cam.com/video/9zZo8TTGYrM/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/oapcsGvg5qI/w-d-xo.html
is seems alan is using the lakes power to add a person into reality more specifically he's using his old character Alex Casey but when the story is over he'll ever disappear or need to be killed of.
@@GamingUniversityUoG do we know if Alex Casey knows he’s a fictional character and a manifestation?
4:50 Agent Mulder, is that you?
Oh definitely. Love that show.
Wonderful as always, I really shouldn't watch your videos in bed though as your voice is too relaxing, I did sleep great though. 😁
Hope you had a good nap!
I finished Control AWE and Alan Wake today, so I don't have such expertise as you :)
But what if Nightingale didn't exist before Alan wrote about him?
He has smoll pp
Poor dude lol
Yeah but that would've destroyed some of the mysticism surrounding Ordinary, like the Not Mother and the kid that turns into a dog-like creature.
I'm still holding out hope that we will get some form of media that covers the Ordinary AWE. My vote is for a movie. It would be an awesome excuse to bring non game fans into the series.
nightingale saw the lake, but we kmow he was in an ocean
He had no clue just how deep it went
Oh dang I'm early. Commenting for algorithm!
Thank you so much! Welcome to the early bird club.
13:41 Hartman might be a scumbag but him calling out Nightingale was cool.
Can you make an Alan Wake Files Playlist, please?
Sure I can break these up. I'll keep then in both though since they are related to the game as a whole.
and I thought Agent Nightingale wasn't a fan of Aln books or just did not like how the Alex Casey trilogy ended after only six books.
The first time i played i thought Nightingale didn't shoot Alan because it was written in the manuscript that he wouldn't shoot
Well it is true that Departure states he would never shoot. But all actions have to be within character for the person.
But he was actually right, Alan’s creativity did kill hundreds of people
Remedy just released a video on saga Anderson
Thanks
Thank you so much! You're awesome.
That about Nightingale having visions of Alan like Clay did was actually stated or it's just speculation on your part?
Question, how much control did Alan Wake have over Nightingale's actions?
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks bro!
Rewatching this after the release of Alan Wake 2, and I got one question.
**Spoilers**
Why was nightingale nude when he surfaced from cauldron lake? He is the only person who is, if i remember correctly. When he was abducted by the dark presence in the original he was in full uniform.
No mention of the other victims being nude, when Wake/Scratch surfaces, he is fully clothed. So why is Nightingale naked? Did something occur to him between the original Alan Wake and the sequel? Perhaps something we'll learn in the future? (Like in the Bright falls DLC) Or was it just for shock value
if Emil Hartman didn't got obsessed to the power of cauldron lake, it wont led to more lives being on stake (alan, nightingale, everyone in brightfalls)
so i will forever be the #1 hater of hartman
Did they change his death scene in The remaster?
No. He was dragged out of the sheriff station in both versions.
I beat alan wake 1 when it came out and I was only a kid so it only succeeded in scaring/ creeping me out. Same with control I just didn't know it was linked. I was excited for alan wake 2 and after beating it, I am playing everything and watching everything related to it. These videos are a godsend!
Agent agentgale
Cool. Whens the next psychonauts? Pls im begging you i need my fix
Good luck.
Love your content 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you so much!
They should've just kept the original Saga Anderson instead of going woke. The character was already a woman FFS. I am surprised they didnt make her LGBTQRSIYYREREUYGBXYZ+ too. That way all the woke agenda checkmarks would've been checked.
I see this take a lot, and I am genuinely curious, what is so "woke" about Saga? If you're willing to elaborate. No hostility here, just trying to see this perspective.
@@HellBoundYEAHHhe’s mad about saga being black. Simple as that. Racist crybaby crying, nothing new.
