      @@tfft I agree with you about the food, we only went to the main dining room once and mostly ate in Oceanview Cafe the other nights, except on my birthday, when we ate at Tuscan Grille, which I loved, the staff even brought me out a cake for dessert

      I did this tour in 2011 on the old Celebrity Century, Food was great, even Sushi was included, but the ship had problems with the rooftop, rain was pouring in and the crew was very busy with cleaning the lounge under the rooftop. But apart from that and the mediocre summer weather in New Zealand the cruise was great, I got a birthday cake 😊

    Excellent overview of my 'go-to' cruise line: Celebrity. I have been on Constellation, Equinox, Solstice, Reflection, and Apex with upcoming cruises booked on Millennium, Silhouette and Beyond.
    Your opinion matched mine as I prefer Celebrity's passenger demographic, its modern ships, specialty restaurants (e.g., Murano and Tuscan Grill are wonderful), etc. I recognize that not everyone wants to book a suite on a cruise ship, but I do. The specialty restaurant, Luminae, for suite guests is great and far better than the main dining room, which I agree is average. For the ships that have the 'Retreat' (i.e., private area for suite guests), Celebrity also excels.

    Just returned from Alaska cruise on Solstice.. They had the new MDR dinner menus which were very disappointing. No more appetizers, just salad and soup, and you can get the Caesar salad, shrimp cocktail and escargot every night. They did away with the “classics” entrees, which were my “go to” when nothing appealed to me. They also removed the chocolate cake from classic deserts. The entrees are all made with cheap ingredients, like pasta (spaghetti, ravioli, fettuccine), chicken, and trash fish like tilapia. Sides are mostly potatoes, cauliflower and squash. The buffet for dinner was one third of what it used to be on our previous cruise on Equinox in May. I have a TA on Silhouette from Southampton to Florida next month, but will not book another Celebrity cruise after that one if the food is as disappointing as it was on Solstice. Planning cruise to Japan in 2024, but after more than 30 cruises on Celebrity, I am looking at Oceania and Viking Ocean. The costs are comparable and the food has to be better than school cafeteria grade.

    • @tfft
      @tfft  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's disappointing. Over the years my experiences with food on Celebrity (except for MDR) has generally gotten better and better, but perhaps I was just on a lucky streak lol. Thanks for watching 🩴

    Great review. Interesting how tastes varies. I honestly liked the design of the Costa ship much since this one looked quite tacky and outdated to me in comparison. • @tfft
      @tfft  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve thought about doing Aqua class before, but it usually comes down to knowing I’d only get to Blu once or twice in a sailing (assuming I went to the specialty spots I like) which makes the price difference over normal balconies pretty pricey… perhaps for a transatlantic I’d consider it. There are different Celebrity ships. I sailed the line from back in the 1990s and they were different. There were days with zero captain announcements or announcements of any type. The MDR food was fantastic and presentation was stressed. But standards started to drop and food is up and down.
    The 3 types of ships are the expedition type of ships (not usually associated with Celebrity), the Millennium and Solstice class ships and the latest and most generic Edge type ships. The Millennium and Solstice class have a lot of Celebrity signature spots and the style is retro modern evocative. The Edge ships are following the ship within a ship style and contemporary trendy and really almost prohibit some prime real estate from non-suite passengers. The whole top forward part is the "Retreat" where the suite passengers get their own deck and interior spaces. The result is, areas that all passengers used to enjoy are off limits. And areas like the Sky Lounge and forward deck spaces are gone. The whole style of the ship is different but a lot of the restaurants are the same and some areas are moved to other spots. The magic carpet doesn't move when people are on it. Eden is a multi-tiered performance space with a specialty restaurant. I say the ship is generic because it lacks the style of established Celebrity. It's not just modernized familiar Celebrity, it's just different. You know when you've sailed Celebrity from the Horizon to Century to Millennium to Solstice, they're all evolutions. The Edge class ships aren't really an evolution but more like other ships. That's all I can say about it. It's pretty but not distinctive and characterful IMO. There's also the issue of the lack of real balconies on most of the ship. Only a few of them exist.
    There's a different CEO and I think more nickel and diming going on. Food is compromised as many have commented on. The line is still good but to get back to its better self the CEO has to go and someone who will bring back Celebrity standards needs to take the helm IMO. They are expanding because the ships are much bigger than they once were hence they're serving more passengers. IMO, Celebrity is trying to expand having passengers pay more money to cruise with the Retreat feature and will try to expand the amount of suites with each coming class. I have no use for "suites," which many are just larger regular rooms, and that aspect of cruising turns me off. Perks should be about loyalty, not about oversized rooms that I don't spend that much time in.

    Going to disagree with you (a first) on the quality of the buffet on Celebrity - Lunch is superb, but dinner has noticeably been cut back c.w.. our previous cruises over the last 8-9 years with Celebrity, this based on a cruise earlier this year on the Eclipse from Australia. On this cruise the evening buffet felt it was mainly burgers and hot dogs with some poor quality steak available to be grilled if you wanted it.

    • @tfft
      @tfft  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if it has something to do with the itineraries as in the past (more so the further back I think) id say the lunch was better than dinner, but on the specific Euro cruise I was on last year, lunch and dinner were equal.

    Main dining room is total disappointment, they use powder for their watery soup base, such as for clam chowder, and pasta fagioli, they are unacceptable. They also use baby meatless mussels, baby shrimps and baby scallops, they try save money, or they may need a new chef.
    Coffee and the powder Creamer, * one star, just lack of taste and lack of aroma, they taste so bad
