  • How I draft, cut, and sew a half-circle skirt | Jaclyn Salem
    Materials and tools I used:
    Scissors
    Measuring Tape
    Coloring pencil (for marking fabric)
    pins
    2 yards of fabric
    Interfacing
    A waistband piece from any project you like (or you can cut a rectangle!): I used the Pauline y Alice Rosari Skirt waistband piece
    zipper (I recommend the brand YKK- not as expensive as Riri, but still a great option.) - you'll want a zip somewhere in the realm of 9"-12" ideally
    Fabric:
    Telio Rayon Crepe Print Ditsy Floral Blush: www.fabric.com/buy/0761836/te...
    Interfacing (by the yard): www.fabric.com/buy/0606691/pe...

      @@laurenalise3488 so glad you found it useful! Learning to draft skirts opened sooooo many doors for me- for example, I see a bodice I like, and then just add a half circle skirt to it to make a dress allllll the time! 🫶💕

    Thank you so much! This tutorial was so easy to follow. So many other use specialty markers and terms that I don't have or understand.

    Great skirt and I love that serger. I learned that same zipper technique in Home Ec. in the late 50s in high school. We also had to hand baste the zipper to the pressed open basted seam which kept it from moving around while machine sewing it in. It's an extra step but does work.

    10/10! I think a half circle might fit my body type, too...adding it to the postpartum sewing list!

    Thank you, you did the zipper very professional. I work the top part of the zipper a little different so it doesn't touch my skin at the waist. It just gets sewn between the 2 layers of the waistband. But your skirt looks really good. I sometimes insert an elastic band inside the waistband but only in the back, that way it stretches a little when needed.

    If you have just a little positive ease like that, you could insert elastic into the waist band, and it would probably look ok. And for finishing the waistband you could “stitch in the ditch” on the right side and catch the inside waistband in the seam , instead of hand stitching.

    If it helps, I do my zippers the same way but baste (by hand) the open zipper face down with the teeth centred so that when closed the zip is centred over the seam. When I get to the bottom I close the zip and baste by hand up the other side. I then undo the original machine basting of the seam and sew the zip with it open which is easier to place the sewing evenly from the edge as you like it. If the zip pull gets in your way stop with your needle down and move it past with your foot up and then lower your foot and carry on. Thank you for all your videos. They are very inspiring.

    After the zipper seam has been basted, take the time to hand baste the zipper into the seam. This is totally worth the time! It never fails me!

    • @gerriebell2128

      I use a glue stick (they make them for fabric too) to hold the zipper while I sew. Basting or gluing is way better than pinning.

    You might like invisible zippers. It’s basically the same insertion technique that you like but you don’t see the zipper exposed as much. There are special feet for this but I use a regular zipper foot and it works just fine. 😊

    Why do circle skirts cause the possibility for larger waist when measured?

  • @ruthchada6102
    @ruthchada6102 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

    When i try this the waist comes put 8 inches to big? What am i doing wrong? Is that happening to anyone else? Shouldn't it fit my waist exactly with just an inch extra for seam allowance

    Love your new skirt Jaclyn. Looks like spring! Your videos are getting better and better with details. Thanks for sharing even your bad moments 😄. When I saw you drawing out the bottom of your circle skirt I remembered something I had read on this topic - tuesdaystitches.com/how-to-cut-perfect-circles-of-fabric/ The image towards the bottom (using a string) would be perfect for this situation. Looking forward to more videos! 😍

    What is the width of the 2 yards?

    • @jaclynsalemwaxtel
      @jaclynsalemwaxtel  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It varies from fabric to fabric, but usually I try to go for those wider fabrics in the 55-60" range. If you using something from a 45" bolt, the skirt will have to be a lot shorter. Hope that helps!
