    Yes, as Blk American, I identify with Big Mama.
    My great grandma and grandma were Southern Women who sat on their porch.
    They raised all children of the community, was a healer, prayer warriors, and the backbone of the community.
    My mom and grandma called my Great Grandma "Mama." I respect the diaspora, but we have our own cultural spirit guides here.

      Yep! I'm Black American and grew up in the south (VA); we called our Grama "Big mama", up until she died 5 years ago. The generations before me called the great grandmothers "Big mama". Big Mamas definitely come with a certain southern wisdom ✨

    Fantastic!! I work with “La Madama” and have a few different ones in my court, however I always knew “Mammy” was different. For one thing, typical La Madama statues show her with a basket on her head. This was something used mostly in the Caribbean NOT in the old American South. Also most La Madama statues include her wearing rosaries because La Madama come from Latin Countries that were Catholic. Mammi of the South never wore that as she was Protestant. Even though the various colors of La Madama dresses have to do with Orisha she may have served, the bright colors of her clothes are seen mostly in the Caribbean and Latin countries. The Old South clothing was darker and more subdued .
    This video is ground breaking! Not just for La Madama sake, but it should put attention to the idea that WE have our OWN Ancestral Spirits right here in North America! We have Harriett Tubman, High John, Gullah Jack, Marie Laveau, Railroad Bill and so many others! We need to start bringing forth their Spirits because they reflect our experience here in North America.
    Thank you once again PaPa Seer for your in depth and insightful work! Welcome back and keep it coming!

      The colors were darker but still vivid. Dyes that could be made from the available natural materials surrounding them were utilized. This included indigo (grown in places like SC) , dark greens, and reds from clay (found in the soil).
      There was also trade.

I'm a young elder of 65, but we must truly thank you, and we appreciate your intuitive gifts, and knowledge of divinity. We love your clear explanation for your extraordinary gifts from the cosmos for overstanding who are spirit guides are and who's relatable to us. Madamas vary from person to person depending on each one’s spiritual quadrant. Not all madamas were slaves. Some of them were free and had their own businesses. And the reason they were given the prestigious name of madamas was because they did charity for the less fortunate. They were very powerful politically as well.

      @ their presence in Latin Caribbean espiritismo is very deep and they are considered highly elevated spirits with strong powers. Madamas were people of intense personal constitutions. They came from various nations of African magic and belief systems and they knew how heal or mess things up real good. In the old days when I was a kid the old heads that would still have hardcore spiritual mass loved it when madamas showed up. These things were an event. If you ever have your own madama present herself to you in dreams she will let you know her name and show you what her life was like so that you know how to service and petition her. People do not play about their own madamas and keep names and other details to themselves. Again there’s very deep stuff that goes along with this.

Sometimes the house workers were those children of the master....and sometimes the nurse maids were kin to the main female-as in her sister. Also my family started buying as much of those cast iron and dark skinned images as they could find....I was triggered but am learning why it was so important to them. This is a great podcast. Keep up the good work young man. Peace

    I would argue La Madama was present in North America; the Spanish colonies. Florida did not become a territory until nearly 50 years before emancipation, Spain still controlled the land. So of course, them black folks were Catholics, spoke Spanish, had Hispanic names, and probably more cultural parallels with Latino/Caribbean cultures just like in Spanish & French Louisiana. We have to look at history from the lens of our ancestors and our spirit.

    • @Papaseer
      @Papaseer  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Amazing point ! But her origin story begins in the Caribbean not Florida 🫶🏽

    • @taviangreen6420
      @taviangreen6420 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Papaseer Noted but being that Florida was ruled by Spain, I wouldn't doubt that Caribbeans from Spanish colonies were bought over. We know they were sent to Louisiana. And if anything their spiritual practices probably thrived more in Florida as black persecution was lesser compared to others. I know La Madama did not originate in Florida, for all we know, but I definitely wouldn't say she was not revered there in some form of fashion. I maybe biased because my folks come from there lol.

      The Blacks in Florida were closer to their African heritage. It actually shows today. I don't think they truly connected with the Spaniard Culture. They would be speaking the language today but they were more influenced by the English language......There is also a deep spiritual presence in certain parts of Florida... Once you get to know certain people of the community you begin to hear the stories...

You tell such a great story, it reminds me of some of the things my grandmother told me as a child. When my Cuzn asked if our kids could call our step grandma ‘Big Mama’ I stood so firm in denouncing her to even think of giving our Big Mama name to another! I believe a spirit came to me, saying no.

    I can't express just HOW MUCH this made sense. I've always said the science is the magic, meaning knowing the facts makes the rituals more effective.
    As SOON as you mentioned breast feeding, you won the argument of Mammy not having the Big Mama image. Obesity was not common before the 80's many fail to realize.
    Even thinking of my own family this was ALL FACTS. My grandmother was a tall big woman with lots of children and a fiery fearless attitude who lived to her mid 80's.
    My great grandmother (her mother) was half Cherokee, slim, caramel tone with straight hair and very pretty. I have her picture plus she walks with me. She was a house maid for wealthy whites who always gave her gifts and everyone always talked about her beauty. She worked A LOT & she died of a heart attack at work in her 50's.
    I was born in 1981, so these 2 women were born a loooong time ago. My Great Grandmother was born 1908.

      I agree ... but in the telling of many of these stories the aspect is slavery is so important, while it was such a horror story for our people it set the landscape for many of the belief systems that emerged in necessity , thank you

      History say otherwise. And there are beings on this Earth that are dark and they penetrate all stations of life today. Spirituality is no different. Because there is dark magic. So the practice of racism in the form of dark magic is brought into the practice of Spirituality... But I guess people don't think dark saints exist in this world...

    I have seen the same issue in WICCA I seen Caucasian witches say to people who are black, Hispanic, Asian, native American etc that they shouldn't be worshipping pagan European gods again it's a calling who are we to say they don't have a European pagan distant ancestors who calls them to their craft

    • @Zimaala
      @Zimaala 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wicca and the covenant of witches are not what we think they are. They have stolen many practices amongst the actual various cultures, spiritual systems and have applied the art and practices to their coven and philosophy.....Masters of Trickery and deception is how I see them .....History and timelines is a powerful tool to learn and understand.....Wicca practices started in the 1900.. And the narration of witches was a narrative born within the churches of Europe...During the Inquisition era..

      Aside from being a Hoodoo, I am an active Spiritist , and yes I very much believe in reincarnation, that many of us have been here many times over and have experienced life as different genders and races

      Thank you for your response. In my high school, many of my friends and I, believed that we were black and past lives. It was something we spoke about quite freely among each other but didn't share outside the group because we were sensitive and didn't want to sound like posers. Yesterday was the first day I found your content. It's really great and I will continue to explore it. How do you feel about respectful white people attending your classes? My intention is not to go out and re-teach or anything like that but I do feel called to explore it more deeply.

    I appreciate the video, however I'm sure we've seen the vintage photos of "nurses" who breastfeed the masters children and they are darker skinned women (which would have been a Mammy). So I bring that up to say darker women were definitely in the home, whether they were perceived as attractive or not.
    I also understand how you're not saying dark skinned people aren't attractive so I'm not attacking

    I am not interested in the awful days of slavery. What did she do before her capture. Where did she develop her practice of Hoodoo before she landed in the Americas. We are still totally lost.

    • @Papaseer
      @Papaseer  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Understandable, but the awful experience of slavery is apart of her story you skip over that then you don’t really know who she is … whether we like it or not , it was her truth

    • @wynterseymour1471
      @wynterseymour1471 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      We are not lost, we’ve journeyed. And hoodoo being created on southern US soil means her hoodoo story and identity as Mammy began during enslavement. Many of these women were born into enslavement. Before enslavement she wasn’t mammy so that would be a different story entirely. The stories and identities of our ancestors can be studied if you study West African and total continental African history. We won’t ever know the full stories, but the information is out there. You are only lost if that’s what you accept

    • @Zimaala
      @Zimaala 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If I am not mistaken the term Big Mama was born in the Sahel, not West Africa....She journeyed to the soil of America and took on the form of Big Mama on the Plantation her pre identity and enslaved identity is still pretty much the same. It describes an older woman of wisdom and power and a leader of her clan....

    • @Zimaala
      @Zimaala 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Mammy is also linked to the name Big Mama. The European culture scarred her image and made her to be this big woman who cooks and cleans. Still the symbolism is within the degradation of the story...Her being big represents her power and her being in the house represents her wisdom and authority over the house. Which also explains your description of her being influenced in politics, arts etc etc.

    • @Zimaala
      @Zimaala 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      And also the movie Soil Food is a symbolism of the Big Mama figure......The kitchen represents Alchemy magic and power and social action and the four women each( her daughters and niece) represents the identity of the Big Mama spirit. The niece is the sexual image of the true Big Mama the one with vitality, charisma, seduction, charm. The youngest daughter is the emotional artist the creator, her giving birth is a representation of her creation. The middle daughter is the nurturing healer, the one who holds the family together and the oldest is the political figure......

    I want to say I agree that the use of Mammy as a slur is a misinterpretation… the physical appearance however is where I disagree… she is apart of the Hebrew bloodline so her appearance is that of the American Negro tribes… The bloodline is not mixed and has never been mixed… the idea image of beauty has only changed for those not apart of the bloodline… because they change and are influenced by social norms and ideas of beauty… this is not true for the true Hebrew bloodline (closer to the first image)… because just as the deity Matrika is a bigger woman … our past images of deities were as well…
