This was the first time I've heard of Mary Booth. I couldn't imagine what she went through as a child. It was absolutely traumatizing. Especially being saved at the last minute from hanging. Her youth was stolen from her, but she endured. I imagine she probably had a psychological breakdown. After all she went through, who wouldn't. I hope, she finally found peace and lived a long life. Thank you for the information. As a black woman, I take stories like this to give me strength to keep fighting my injustices.

I had not heard about Mary Booth, either. I am jus sickened by the violence against this little girl. I did not know that so much ugliness was leveled against black women in the aftermath of the Civil war. I am so very sorry for all of this, it grieves my heart and soul. Because I have always had a heart that abhors injustice, I would have been a child and woman that was whipped for advocating for others whom society villiefied. I experienced my own forms of this as a divorced, single mother for decades. Mary, I am so sorry, so sorry.

Killing is entrenched deeply within THEIR genes. They have to have sacrifices when one of them dies. In 1944, fourteen yo George Stinney was convicted by a jury not of his peers for murdering two white girls and sentenced to death by electrocution. Stinney who was 5'1 and weighed about 80 was accused of killing eleven and eight old girls. Stinney was so small that he had to sit on a bible in the electric chair. Years later the state of S. Carolina determined Stinney was falsely convicted! That didn't do George Stinney or his family any good because George was still dead.

Oh so sad and heartbreaking. My husband asked why I watch these sad historical events, and it is to not forget injustice and to remember the abused innocents. Thank you for your research and telling this story.

Thank you for telling this story. We should never look away from the injustice of our past, if no other reason than to learn from it and keep it from happening again. I would like to think we have come a long way but I'm afraid we are still fighting these same battles again and again.
