I’m 52 and just had hip replacement 5 days ago. I’m so glad I found you guys. You have been so helpful in extra information to aid in sleep and does and dont’s. I also enjoy your sense of humor. It keeps me engaged. I’m am happy to be one of your “people “😂 I work in a hospital and can’t wait to share your channel to the doctors I work with as well as my coworkers. Keep up the good work!
I’ve been following these two therapists for sometime and have found them to be very knowledgeable and very helpful in getting me back into shape after various surgeries. You can’t go wrong with them.
Quick tip: if you don't have something to help pull your leg up, using your Good leg, place your foot being the heel of the surgery leg and move both legs at once. All the strength comes from the good leg, no strain & it's fast & painless. I found it especially helpful the first 3 weeks, keeping the legs together in one movement is much less painful too.
Hey fells, I'm 7 days post op and picked up one of your knee sliders. Works great! Sleeping is rough, I'm usually a belly sleeper so it's a new learning curve for me.
I found a blanket with a foot pocket sewed in and I put both my feet in the pocket and pull my feet up using the blanket. It’s soft, yet supported. Works great.
I had both hips replaced about 4.5 years apart, I was a side sleeper before the first one and had to learn to sleep on my back which after a couple of weeks was fine, each time I was given a triangular wedge to put between my legs to prevent leg crossing while sleeping.... I had to posterior surgery each time, don't regret it at all, it completely changed my life...
I had both knees replaced 3 months apart. Have always been a side sleeper and slept with a pillow between knees for pain relief, after the surgery i added a flat pillow under the affected knee to support the joint. it's been 6 years and I still sleep this way. i am 77.
ohh, now what is your position of sleep and now you setisfy that opration, I'm Avn patient both hip, 4 stage, I'm going to have surgery soon , I have only one relative, hope you are better than ever, please reply i will waits
Thank you so much . I came out of hospital yesterday after having a total knee replacement. My hospital bed was so comfortable and could be moved in various directions. Now that I'm home my bed seems very unyielding and I was wondering how on earth I was going to sleep. Thanks to your video and tips on what to do with pillows I'm sure I will be able to sleep much better from tonight onwards. Love you guys.
Thank you -- 9 days out on TKR --- 2nd one. Trying to sleep was miserable the first time and this time--- again as bad. No one tells you how to position yourself--- Just DO not's ( pillow under knee! ) Appreciate these suggestions will try tonight. Maybe won't be crying for an hour plus while trying to get to sleep! Love your videos !
Had total hip done 9 days ago, and am experiencing serious pain during the night time. Haven't been able to sleep very much at all. When I lay in the bed at night, I place one pillow under my surgery leg, from behind the knee, to the ankle , to keep my surgical leg elevated. I'm experiencing serious to excruciating pain in hip , thigh and knee during night time and is causing me to stay awake all night . I'm relatively young, 44, and expected the recovery to go more smoothly than it has. ** I'm adding this comment after watching the video. As I stated in my comment, I'm having really bad pain at night in hip, thigh and front and back of knee, I just tried the wedge, and I'll be dammed that I've been in this position for over 30 minutes, and the pain in the knee and thigh is gone, only slight hip pain at the moment, but I feel A whole lot more comfortable. So glad I watched this, thank you so much !
@@hotjoose9415 I use alot of ice. I'm at a bit of A disadvantage when it comes to managing the pain. Not to get into too much detail, but I've been on A medication the last 7 years that is used for opiate addiction, it blocks the opioid receptors, even though I stopped using it 3 days before surgery, pain medication pretty much doesn't help at all. I'm also experiencing withdrawal from said medication, which is making things much worse than normal. By the time I do my left side in a year or two, things will be much easier and my system will be back to normal, and I do not plan to continue the medication after my recovery. It has made this A whole lot worse than it should have been.
Jon Means gotcha. Some people glaze over the swelling part so just thought I’d add my 2 cents if needed. I hope all goes well with you from here on out!
@@jonmeans2637 I've been on methadone for years, since I have tolerance to it, it didn't give any pain relief. Dr. prescribed me morphine before surgery, methadone blocked any euphoria but still got a little pain relief. I stopped the morphine one week before hip replacement but continued methadone. After surgery I was given hydromorph every 3hrs. helps some but still a lot of pain at night. I can't imagine you had to come off everything before surgery, that must have been a nightmare or discomfort
I'm 3 weeks out from a TKR, I think I have benefited so much from ur show. The x-rays, ultra sound were all excellent. Only thing is my PT worked me too hard, my knee was swollen /stiff all day with pain. I let my surgeon know. I love ur humor!
I am 16 and just had my second hip replacement done on the 11th of June, I forgot a lot of this info, and I am super glad I found your channel, as it has been a few years since my first replacement. Thank you for the tips.
Thank you guys so much. I had full knee replacement eight days ago. I usually toss and turn for two hours before sleeping. I use your pillow method and went to sleep immediately.
I slipped on ice 🧊 on my driveway. I hit soooo hard. Pain was intense!!! I thought I had just dislocated my hip. So, I stayed home for two days before I went to the hospital. MISTAKE! Instead of fixing the multi fractured 🦴 femur, they did a hip replacement. I’m only forty-two. I’m glad I found your channel.
Hey, Bob and Brad. I have painful knees from running and spin classes. I have been told to elevate my knees to reduce swelling , but was not doing the elevation right. Thanks for showing the right way to elevate your knees 😊
If you are British, can I assume everything, like your driving, is done on the opposite side? Sorry, and yes, I do have a day job, and I will not quit it. I hope you do well, I will be getting my hip surgery soon too.
I used my tie from my bathrobe to help me move my leg post surgery. My other salvation was that I have an adjustable bed so my legs are up all the time I’m or laying in bed. I also take time to push the back of my knee into the bed to straiten my leg. I also put my bed down and lift my leg and then grab my leg under my knee and then bend my knee.
I just came home today and my total knee replacement. This is the second one in six months. I had the right done first due to severe osteoarthritis. Bone on bone. It’s the most Traumatic thing to go through in my opinion worse than a C-section. Even with 15 mg of pain meds and a nerve pain pump. You’re not gonna be able to sleep on your side which I’m a side sleeper, due to bad back problems osteoarthritis. I have a the titanium device in my back from 2 back surgeries. I hope everything finds these dos and don’ts helpful
Good day sir may i ask a question about the cast on my broken lower leg. Is it good to sleep sideways position in bed?? Its month old cast. Im very worried during my unconsciousness while sleeping i always go twisted sideways position. Thank you sir
Worse pain I've ever felt was my tkr. Never , ever want to go through it again. The hospital kicks you out on day 2 and skilled nursing and PT only see you a couple of times a week. They didn't use the continuous movement machine which would help. Horrible procedure to endure.
I had a total hip replacement procedure on 12/11/23. I used to be a stomach sleeper but I've been avoiding that for now. However today is the beginning of 7wks post op. Is it ok to sleep on my stomach now ? Or should refrain for a longer period of time? And if so, how long?
Did you find an answer? I’m 6 wks post-op hip and miss sleeping on my stomach! The back is awful and I’m really over it! I have a new exercise that I have to do ‘on my stomach’, so I’m thinking maybe yes at this point??
I’m 21 and have had both of my hip replaced and need future replacements and I’m so glad I found you guys!! This video is very helpful thank you so much!!

I had my first knee replacement in Feb. had 3 weeks of home therapy, mainly because I do not drive or have dependable transportation 3x a week for PT and dr appts also. had p.t. the same day as surgery, 2x the next day in the hospital for the next 2 days before discharge. therapist came to my appt 3x a week starting the next day. then to a therapist 3x a week for a total of 3 months. now, no pain, no limp and no discomfort in that knee. now, since the other knee is just as bad, have that tkr in 3 days. I guess I was very lucky, even having had bone and bone for many years but put off surgery until retiring. 66 yrs old now and hoping the 2 new knees now will last as long as I do. THERAPY IS A MUST
I am 16 weeks in my both knees replacement, but cannot walk keeping my proper balance. Cannot stand more than 5 mts without getting the nerves so stiff that starts hurting bad, at the back of my knee intense pain. Becomes difficult to sit down.. pls tell me what is it?
I'm a diehard stomach sleeper and managed to finagle my polar care cable to where I could sleep on my stomach by day 3, the towel as well as the polar care padded the knee enough that it didn't hurt to sleep on my stomach and I obtained great extension at the same time. I could sleep about 3 hours in this position before waking up to take pain meds.
Hey Karen~ I'm a stomach sleeper, too, and about to have a TKR. Which Polar Care did you use & do you recommend it? Any other tips? Thanks & hope your doing well!
I had L partial knee replacement on Feb.1. I am going back to work Feb. 27. I go between sleeping in the recliner and the bed. Sometimes it is frustrating.
Thank you, you guys helps a lot. Just done a THR on left leg and keep having hardtime to sleep with just layback position. I also had ankylosing spondylitis and your video sure help me sleep well. Thank you again.
I'm in your cult!! I really appreciate your videos. Could you do one on non-self-motivated people and how they can overcome it? My doc refused inpatient therapy due to increased infection rates. But I live alone, and on another surgery was inpatient. I had rehab 2x per day, with somebody saying 'let's go' plus I got 3 meals per day. At home alone I just don't eat much. Maybe a sandwich per day. So I get in-home rehab 2x per week and am going to outpatient rehab next week. I've been practicing driving. I hate not being in inpatient and I'm not healing as well as when I was. Plus, I know not eating much doesn't help. I'm miserable.
I understand. I’m 82 & 3 weeks into TKR. Pain has been terrible: I live alone also. Start pt Monday with me driving: this is no walk in the park. Pain meds Don.t help much either. Good luck!
Hi, I’m about to have a hip replacement and the booklet of advice I’ve been given says don’t lie on the none operated side. For first 6 weeks afterwards only lie on the operated side, if comfortable.
Got my partial hip replacement surgery around 2 months ago and have to sleep on my back with an elevation pillow mostly or my leg and foot get swollen. I used to be a side sleeper and wow is it annoying to train yourself to sleep on your back.
I just had a total hip replacement 5 days ago and haven't been able to sleep more than an hour without feeling so much pain, I end up seeing in a recliner.
I'm lay in bed 2 days after total hip replacement. I have no arthritic pain which is great. On the negative side though it's really hard work and I'm only 47
I just had my hip replacement this week. I'm 47 and I've got to get the other one done too. It's hard when your other hip is bad and can't lay on that side either.
I’m 4 months on now and everything is going good. If it’s any consolation I need my other doing also, but i feel amazing with just the one back to normal pretty much. I can cycle now and have no pain in my right leg anymore. Just need to get the other done and i’ll be a new man
Thanks for the tips, I had a partial L knee replacement 7 days ago & have already been using the pillow between knees laying on side technique because it is the most comfortable position at night personally.I certainly try out some of your other tips as well.Kind regards 😊
What do obese people do to get in and out of the bed. I'm so distraught. I lie in the bed and cry most of the night because I'm not in bed correctly. Is there anything that I can buy to use in the bed to help me move?😢
I had knee surgery lately, but have knee brace on it..it’s heavy and make my leg tired..what do you call that blue thing to help in getting out of bed?
Hi my husband broke hip had surgery went well then put him in rehab . Ok he was they told him no physical activity or therapy till every thing heals. Every thing seems ok. He wakes up next day and he screams in pain all sidden he cant turn head or lift head up in bed. I dont know what the hell happend. Help need answer???
Hi Bob and Brad! I broke cartilage off of my right knee. Now it's causing horrible pain down my right leg. They said I need two months of physical therapy. This was my strong leg. The P.A. said congrats you fast tracked your way to osteoarthritis at 47. Then he said you'll never walk the same way again! Is this true? He was really horrible!
Hi Patti,Had knee surgery 5 days ago. Sleeping situation is cruel. One problem I have apart from horrendous knee pain is a series of crush fractures in my spine. Sleeping flat on my back is beyond words painful, and the physio wouldn't give any advice on an alternative so have to contact my surgeon on Monday. There has to be some way to alter my sleeping position just a little to get some relief."Lay flat ,keep knee straight blah, blah, blah. I did not get into bed last night. Slept in my recliner for 5 broken hours. I'd love to hear some feedback from you about how you coped at this stage. Painkillers are only marginally helpful for a couple of hours.{Endone 5mg,and,Targin 10mg } I will be having injection for pain this morning via catheter, and, again on Sunday morning {tomorrow},but,it barely lasts beyond 12 hours. Would love to hear from you
Okay so are there any tips with people that have had rods put in their legs and screws and have multiple fractures I had a tree accident recently and I've done multiple fractures and had two rods put in my leg and screws for my knee and I have a little spinal injury so far I'm using a walker but is there anything I can do to make my recovery any better
Planning on TKR sometime in December (2021) and was wondering if sleeping in a recliner is beneficial. I currently sleep on my recliner because I use a CPAP machine at night and the noise (and snoring at times) interferes with my wife’s sleep. Thanks.
I had total knee replacement in September 2021 and I slept in a lift chair/recliner for about 2 months or so. Do much easier than trying to get in and out of bed. Im now trying to sleep in my bed-i sleep an hour or 2 on my side and then have to change position cuz my knee will start throbbing. I tried the pillow between my legs but it makes my knee hurt bad so I don't use the pillow. I wish you an uneventful recovery from your surgery.
Hi, it's great to see am stomach sleeper earlier because of hip pain. Now am not able to sleep properly after surgery. Pls suggest.. waiting for ur help
I'm going on two weeks after complete knee surgery muscles are still tight doesn't hurt that much until I go to bed I'm going to sleep falling asleep and boom a strong knee pain wakes me up is there anything I could do so that won't happen when I'm sleeping
For the first couple of weeks it is hard. When you find a comfortable position you can fall asleep but eventually wake up hurting somewhere and have to move a bit until the hurting starts again. The ice machine is the best answer to getting to sleep, I think.
Help!!!! I had left hip replacement surgery. Lost a lot of blood 🩸 but no blood transfusions where needed. 4th n 5th day where horrible. Pain swollen hip near surgery. Right now I kneed a leg lifter. I believe that might help. Sleeping is tuff. I want to cry n scream.
My aunt just had hip replacement surgery a couple of days ago and I was looking on your channel for tips any advice on things she can use for her buttocks becoming numb when she’s laying in bed? I know donuts can help in a seated position but I wasn’t sure if there was something specifically for laying on your back

Thank you for the magic!
Good luck!
@@angieventimiglio395 Good Luck! Sounds like a very full time.
How are you both doing now?
Hi, I’m about to have a hip replacement and the booklet of advice I’ve been given says don’t lie on the none operated side. For first 6 weeks afterwards only lie on the operated side, if comfortable.
how have you been after surgery?
You are so funny 👍🏻 Love it.
Got my partial hip replacement surgery around 2 months ago and have to sleep on my back with an elevation pillow mostly or my leg and foot get swollen. I used to be a side sleeper and wow is it annoying to train yourself to sleep on your back.
It really is hard to change your sleeping habits, that's for sure
Had knee surgery in less pain but if I keep my knee raised I feel it going numb on my toes help on what sleeping arrangements are ok
Un
I’ve no idea how I’d be able to sleep on my back. Ive been a stomach sleeper all my 81 years!! Side temporarily but only for a short while.
Why is sleeping on your stomach a no- no after a hip surgery? I’d that only during the healing process or forever?
Hi my husband broke hip had surgery went well then put him in rehab . Ok he was they told him no physical activity or therapy till every thing heals. Every thing seems ok. He wakes up next day and he screams in pain all sidden he cant turn head or lift head up in bed. I dont know what the hell happend. Help need answer???
I had partial L knee in June. I was only on the walker for 1 day & finished PT by visit 6
Linda Jones . was it this year you got your partial knee replacement
You guys just answered all my questions. Great info after a TKA.
In fact I have replaced a hip few years ago. Is it safe to sleep on the side I have replaced the hip in?!
Thank you in advance!
Double hip replacement surgery how to sleep. I use to sleep both sides I am 42 I had surgery 4 months before
Hi Bob and Brad!
Had knee replacement 3 weeks ago, need to find good way to sleep so uncomfortable...
Would love to hear from you
Very informative
For hip replacement you can sleep on your stomach.
Hi, it's great to see am stomach sleeper earlier because of hip pain. Now am not able to sleep properly after surgery. Pls suggest.. waiting for ur help
Watching all of these in hopes I will be so tired I will fall asleep on my back (impossible)
I'm going on two weeks after complete knee surgery muscles are still tight doesn't hurt that much until I go to bed I'm going to sleep falling asleep and boom a strong knee pain wakes me up is there anything I could do so that won't happen when I'm sleeping
Do you have any recommendations for someone having problems getting comfortable in bed or having sleep tremors after a double knee replacement?
For the first couple of weeks it is hard. When you find a comfortable position you can fall asleep but eventually wake up hurting somewhere and have to move a bit until the hurting starts again. The ice machine is the best answer to getting to sleep, I think.
Help!!!! I had left hip replacement surgery. Lost a lot of blood 🩸 but no blood transfusions where needed. 4th n 5th day where horrible. Pain swollen hip near surgery. Right now I kneed a leg lifter. I believe that might help. Sleeping is tuff. I want to cry n scream.
When you are by yourself who puts all those pillows in all those different places for how you’re supposed to sleep!?
HIP REPLACEMENT: min 7:11
My aunt just had hip replacement surgery a couple of days ago and I was looking on your channel for tips any advice on things she can use for her buttocks becoming numb when she’s laying in bed? I know donuts can help in a seated position but I wasn’t sure if there was something specifically for laying on your back
New sub.. learning so much
How about for femur thigh
You guys are the best! Thanks for the videos!
I have proximal tibia fracture but i can not afford to buy plate. Its only extranal fixator. 😢 Its already 3months
I spend half of almost every night in a supportive "stressless" recliner. Works great bed to chair then back to bee.
I only had a menicus cut off. I can't sleep either.
Thanks guys 👍✌

Great clip. But the audio constantly fluctuates in almost all of your videos and usually sounds lower than the normal volume.
