    Thanks, Chris! Canaries are my favorite. I'm about ready to pair mine up. I've never heard you mention replacing the eggs with dummy eggs. Is it not necessary?

    • @birdnerd

      Yes it is a good thing to do. I uploaded a video today updating the canaries and I talk a little bit about why I haven't used dummy eggs lately.

    Hey birdnerd , quick question , what kind of lighting set up do you use for the finches ? Great videos by the way thanks for the info.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have some adjustable LED lights on the side of my breeding cages. On the ceiling of my bird shed I have regular LED house lights. The birds also have the option of going outside to the aviary and get full sunlight.

      Canaries are geared more towards lighting. When the lighting and warmth increase it sparks their interest and they come into breeding condition. Typically if you are following the schedule of the sun in the Western Hemisphere they will start breeding around March.

    whats the best food to give a red factor? and do you have a video to show how to tell a male canary and a female.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are food colorings that you can put in their water to keep them with their red coloring. I have mentioned in some of my canary videos on how to tell the sexes. but it is difficult to tell the sexes of canaries.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are different sizes of canaries some breeds like the glosters are usually a bigger type of canary and then there are others like the lizard or the timbrado canaries are typically a smaller breed. So it depends on what you are wanting.

    hi, im new with Canaries, I bought a pair about 3 weeks ago. the female started building a nest almost right away and now she siting on 3 eggs, they are close to one year old, oh so they told me so most likely new parents. my concern is that im not sure if they are a bonded pair, I haven't seen the male feed the female and he seems to want to tear up the nest shes sitting on but doesn't really destroy it, just picks at the side of it lol. anyways he started singing 2 days ago for the first time and he try's to mate with the female while she's sitting on the nest with the eggs. The female seems to enjoy the attention and is not getting hurt or stressed from it. Any thoughts on this? should I wait and see what happens with the eggs? Thanks and great channel!

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could separate the male. It sounds like he may be young and a little inexperienced. Canary females are very capable of incubating and raising the young by themselves. This may give the mother a better opportunity to just focus on incubating the eggs and raising the young.

  • @masoudhadadi874

    what is the ideal temperature to breed? how about light regimen?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Between 68-75 degrees is what has worked best for my birds once the temp starts getting past 85 it tends to stress the birds out quite a bit and the babies don't develop as fast. Lighting for canaries is very important because that is what bring them in and out of breeding mode. between 12and 14 hours of light is recommended for canaries to breed

      If your pair is in breeding condition. you can expect eggs anywhere from 1-3 weeks after they build a nest. The eggs will hatch anywhere from 14-18 days after being laid.

    • @birdnerd

      Yeah that's fine, mine love to stuff into a nest box at night. If you are trying to breed them then I would suggest separating the pairs so they all can't cram into the nest.

      @@birdnerd even if there isn’t a female in the house... my little yellow one isn’t as aggressive nor as strong as my red factor so they are separate. The red factor one always thinks the yellow one is a bitch and tries to breed her and that is why they are separate. Because of the tail being destroyed by trying to breed he cannot fly as well anymore.Do you think I should re-locate him and only have one?I have had to stay at females and one male and I never had this issue... I love both of my canaries and they used to fly around in the house a lot not only the red factor aggressive one can do that.

      Mine did the same thing. I bought 2 different kinds of baskets and put the pieces of paper towels she put on top of the seeds in the baskets. She immediately took them out of the baskets, so I put them back in the seeds and gave them a different seed cup. Thought I'd do a little searching on what to do.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@suzannegmirek1520 Suzanne, You could remove the seed dish and put the nest where the seed dish was and transfer over the nesting material and eggs into the new nest and see if she will sit on them that way.

    • @suzannegmirek1520
      @suzannegmirek1520 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@birdnerd thanks for your response. That's exactly what I did :-) Unfortunately, they took all the nesting material out, she didn't incubate the last egg left for 2 days and on the 3rd morning, it was cracked open wide and I'm assuming eaten. Oh well. These canaries eat everything I put in the cage... little amounts of broccoli, grapes, scrambled eggs. I put Harrison's tiny pellets in a separate dish and they started eating it right away. I hope I didn't teach the male to eat the eggs. The nest is out now and if she starts putting paper toweling in the seed dish again, I will immediately put the nest in the cage and keep putting the paper towels in there. Unless, of course, you have some other advice for me. :-) Thanks again...greatly appreciated.
