It's incredible what has happened in the linux since Steam announced they'd use Linux on their Steam Deck. It also doesn't help that Microsoft is making it real attractive to not use Windows.

Not going to lie man..... I actually enjoyed listening to this and didn't really find myself skipping around a bunch (except for when I went to rewind a specific section). It was nice to see you go through the various emulators too and the fact you showed ways to rip your own ROMs. I have quite a bit of older games from the 90s I'd like to go back and play.
I've also been thinking of getting my kids on Linux too, I just feel better about them having a system that's a bit more locked down and kind of forces them to tinker a little bit. I myself like Linux as well and use it for work stuff, it's awesome to me that Linux doesn't just need to be another sever-only OS.
Good video overall - simple, yet thorough explanations on how to get setup. Keep at it man!

Great video. You really did a good job explaining everything in detail. I've been gaming on linux for quite a long time. As far as the emulators I usually set those up through lutris. Earlier this year I finally decided to remove my windows partition on my computer. That was a great feeling. Gaming on linux has really improved the last few years. Great video. I always enjoy watching your videos.

This is very helpful. But there is another way to play a game on Linux, you can use heroic launcher and/or lutris. you may also install VM and play on VM because of the anti-cheat limitation, you may try to enable Display Acceleration on VM for better performance.

I'm not really a gamer but good grief, that laptop's specs look absolutely amazing. Those 2 GPUs are something that particularly interest me. Been dabbling in some advanced Python programs which take full advantage of the GPU so having the ability to route to either GPU would be a fascinating thing to do. Also GPU-passthrough in a VM would be a dream. The fact that Tux specializes in Linux is a gigantic cherry on top. Me likey.

If you are going to do more on Linux gaming I think getting games from the store running might be a good subject there are probably plenty of people with decent sized libraries from Epic's weekly giveaways
As for emulators the only thing more you might add is the pros and cons of one over another for the same platform but I think that's pretty minor

Using roms to run a physical game on your computer, You are allowed a digital copy of every actual physical cartridge you purchase and physically own in the United States, other countries may have other laws and restrictions so it would be advisable to lookup the respective laws in your country regarding software/game copies use in your country. If you do not own the cartridge, its better to buy one, rip the cartridge and have your own digital copy for archive/backup. You can find cheap cartridges of games on certain sites, I suggest you own the physical copy before using any roms or files of any game. If you sell any physical game, make sure you deleted any digital copy as you no longer own the physical copy. This is out of repect to the game maker, the studio that created the game and also follows the DMCA act of 1998 subsection 117 for those in the United States. I agree "ripping" your own physically owned games or software for "archival or backup" purposes is on point. Rule of thumb is, if you don't physically own it, don't do it. But this video on Linux Gaming is FANTASTIC!, thank you for another awesome video!

I gave Garuda a serious try but I kept having sound issues, tried switching between all the avail options but it continued to not work. I did like the everything already installed, it would save a ton of time especially for a linux noob like me. I do have to say if i had stuck with Garuda, I think I would have learned a lot less about linux tho. I ended up doing Arch, I know odd that my sound did work on arch, since garuda is arch based, but it did. I had to install all that stuff Garuda does for you, and I have learned a ton, i'm still a noob tho. A big thanks to you and all those on youtube that do linux videos i hate the forums, and dont like the wiki that much!
Games I play on linux, so far Warframe, Guild Wars 2, Star Trek Online, all work without any issues, and in guild wars 2, where doing world bosses on win10/11 I was getting sometimes max 30 fps, on linux with some added compatability options in steam launch options i am getting a min of 70ish and usually at 100 fps for these world events (lots of players, lots of char models)
So I'd say if it runs out of the box roll with Garuda, If you want to self educate and learn, give Arch a try, I have not tried anything yet that wasnt arch based, I may install Nobra on a second hard drive sometime in the future and see how it goes!
and a big thanks again to you guys, all the instruction videos/linux type videos on youtube really help! Keep at it please!

Truth be told emulation in Linux is significantly better than on windows. I was even watching a channel about handheld devices and emulation and when he installed Linux the performance was better compared to windows. For the windows games hopefully for me, I am not a big fun of online multiplayer games in general but I totally understand this limitation is going to keep some people either having to use windows alongside with Linux or not being convenient for them to use Linux. About the Distro I didn't know the tool in Garuda to install emulators but I think some other Distros have something similar but I don't use these tools I mostly know the emulators I am using and if I don't I check the internet and never had an issue to find it in the repos (a lot of emulators are open source and distros package them).

I wish I wasn't into such niche stuff that didn't play nicely with Linux. When I got my Steam Deck I really wanted it to be my first step towards ditching Windows, but unfortunately being really into visual novels, unpopular Japanese games, different mmos and stuff, Linux has kinda mostly been a hassle for me. It just sucks, because "Steam OS" really is pretty amazing with how well the features feel like a regular handheld or console. Windows doesn't even come close.
(I guess, it has improved, and many games I couldn't play a year ago I can play now, but I'm not really a fan of having to troubleshoot nonstop, and hoping I can just get a game running correctly, or not just be missing something (cutscenes, effects, etc). I really hope Valve keeps at it, and eventually, I don't even need protontricks or workarounds for everything and they do "just work")

I have playing Steam games on Linux for last 3 years until now. Games will not run now, Mount & blade 2, Outward, Wartales, Fartherest Frontier, Life in Feudal Forrest, to name a few. I have attempted to contact Steam support, I was sent a reply to acknowledge my request for help. Steam is very busy, 4th week now and still no contact. I have now purchased new memory for my deaktop, so old memory will go into rubbish bin and I use the new memory and try again.

The days of Windows are even more numbered in my household now. ProtonDB here I come. If the games I play are playable on Linux then there is no longer a use case scenario for Windows on my machines.

I'm trying to get my feet wet on linux in general, of cause gaming is a part of that.
Sadly gaming seems easier than developing C# apps x)
    Thanks for the video.

Everything is good, but you didn't mentioned about the windows game with dvd installers/offline installers.
Anyways, it's still a great and informative video.

If the anti cheat is at a kernel level, you're out of luck, luckily Windows are thinking about locking their kernel, which will force the anti cheat makers to make thier software at an api level, making it compatible with Linux..
Battleye works (when it comes to Bohemia games, like arma and dayz)
What distro is geruda based of?😮

Awesome video lad just was wondering about Linux, my brother dumped a broken Arcade on me that is run by an old Compaq PC inside the lad who made the Arcade is rip off merchant it is basically freemium games on MAME running on Unix system hoping that a Linux PC can be used to fix the PC the hard drive is tiny the thing is a joke tabletop CRT and a Compaq rip off PC folks get robbed buying them this thing needs fixed though but was wondering about sorting out a retro PC to run Linux to try hack and fix the old Compaq system as the lad that made it has it locked up kinda anyhow was expecting Linux to be a nightmare to run games yet it looks better than windows thankfully someone with common sense and a brain has brought out a decent video explaining how to sort it out cheers lad hope you had an awesome Christmas with a grand New Year thanks as needed a video like this to follow suit...

Looking for a distro that has minimal set up, really a more console-Es experience, this may be close

liked it alot, but did'nt have a use for new computer/laptop, so no subscription.. thnks for detailed video.. a shame you did'nt say anything about installing windows games on linux, metal gear works already native right? i'm installing Garuda on my second pc (i7 6700k) its getting too old for windows.. (build in 2016) already unsupported hardware.. since win 11. it works, but to many hoops to jump trough, is the main feeling that i get from windows now a days.. not to bad i kinda know what to do in windows.. but i'm getting annoyed about it, i'm watching linux mature in gaming for a couple of years now.. i think its time..
