How we RESCUED a huge collection of RARE FILMS !

  • Last year the Periscope Film team performed an emergency rescue of a gigantic collection of films - right before they headed to a landfill. Today we're sharing the story of this herculean effort, and about what we do in general, the how and the why (in case you were curious!).
There are hundreds of thousands or even millions of films out there in the world waiting to be saved by people like us, and by people who are similarly minded (maybe you or someone you know?) We hope you will share this video with the world and help inspire appreciation and preservation of our nation's rich celluloid heritage!
    - Nick, Doug & the entire Periscope Film team.

I'm a long-time subscriber on TH-cam, but just joined on Patreon and TH-cam. What you are doing is SO important. Every film you can save is a gift to future generations. I honestly thought you were a much bigger operation, which is why I haven't supported before now. However, after seeing this video, I'm all on-board. Preserving this part of our history is crucial!

We do actually thank our Patreon supporters once a year with a special video, if you go on the Patreon site you will see last year's edition. We are super thankful for our Patreon supporters, as they have enabled us to acquire and save some wonderful films (including the batch featured in the video) by offsetting expenses. Thanks again!

Yes you are 100% true it is sad that so little content of value is created today...and that's one reason we wanted to publish all these wonderful old films. ...but there is always a tradeoff when it comes to thinking about eras in our nation's history ... in the oft-celebrated 1950s people were better educated but the nation was segregated, women didn't have careers, LGBTQ had no rights, people with disabilities had no options, etc.

I used to work for a large film library in Oregon. They rented the 16mm classroom films to schools in the western states. They had thousands of those.
Business was decreasing by the time I left in 1987. They had begun to rent VHS format videos.
I talked to the director of the library about what would happen to the films eventually. They didn't know.
    Issues were
    how to store them.
Who would want to have them
    Who even cared about them.
Who would want to bother with them.
I imaging that the collection would have been sold at auction to the highest bidder. Which could have been my humble self. Probably for $ 500.

    • @PeriscopeFilm
      @PeriscopeFilm  ปีที่แล้ว

That's a shame. We've rescued several libraries of this type ... but storage and preservation remains an issue. As you know, it's not inexpensive to store and scan motion picture films! The State of Oregon owned and operated the film library.
It was located at Portland State University in Portland.
I worked there for nine years.
I inspected the films using an electromechanical scanner.
Periscope Films probably has a few of those. I repaired the films. Also cleaned them with another machine. It used a liquid. Carbon tetracloride.
We also shipped and received the films every day.
I'm very happy that you are preserving these old films.

Thanks ... every college and university in the USA used to have a 16mm film library. So many of them just ended up in the landfills, it's awful to contemplate. I personally recognized that my own alma mater was dumping films and managed to rescue a handful of unique prints about the institution before they were tossed. At the time we had no money to store the others, it was truly sad.

You need to not throw out things that are current today. In this case, these old film back in the 30's through 60's.
Things never become old and a good example of history if they are thrown out shortly after they are made or used. Needs to be stored when they are still contemporary and then stored properly so when they are old they are not thrown away too.

A truly outstanding job, Periscope Film!!! Many people, sadly, do not seem to realize the enormous value of preserving these. EDIT: there is one film that I saw in high school health class in 1978 that I would LOVE to find at least a snippet of. I believe the film was on modern medical marvels (1960s-ish), and IIRC they interviewed the guy who either invented or drastically improved the shunt for hydrocephalitics. He was actually an auto mechanic or perhaps a machinist of some sort. He was talking about his invention and he made the comment something like, "Because of this, the babies can now be... salvaged." The entire class BURST out laughing at that one.

You guys are hero's, bringing real History to the world on an unlimited number of subjects. In Jr and Sr High School I worked in the Library and Media Center for an elective class. I was the guy who brought the projector or Film Projector box around to show to classes, circa 75-79. To see all them films and knowing how fragile the media is, it seems that this blessed treasure found it's way to you at the perfect time. Happy hunting and great work Periscope team.

Thank you, guys, so much for doing this! I have been obsessed with 16 mm films since I was in junior high and high school in the 1980s, and they would show us educational films that were usually a minimum 20 years out of date. The cardboard acting, the slang from another era that was unfamiliar to my generation, driver's ed. films with hippies on acid! I never wanted it to end! These films are priceless time capsules of times and places that are gone forever, and you are in some instances, probably saving the only surviving filmed record.

and early 70's. You are right - some of them were ridiculously out of date.....but I do still have fond memories of them ! Back in the 90's - was able to
acquire several VHS tapes and DVDs of some of these films - released by "Something Weird Video" ( I think they were out of Seattle ). They are a lot
of the drivers ed movies - VD warnings ( for sailors )...even chewing gum in class, etc. Funny to go back and watch once in awhile !

@@urbanurchin5930 There was nothing better than returning from lunchbreak to the classroom and seeing that 16 MM projector set up when you walked in the room. "What strange, hilarious, films are they going to show us today?", I would think to myself. I do remember "Something Weird Video", and I think I even bought some of their VHS tapes, "Carnival of Souls" maybe. But not any educational films. I do remember getting a few Tapes from a place in D.C. called "Freak-Outs & Flashbacks", that were all 1960s and early 70s drug scare films. Great stuff!

Ironically this video may be the most important thing on the channel. Until 10 minutes ago I didn't know who you all were or what you do. I knew only that old films could be found here.
I imagined Periscope Films was some guy in his basement finding things on the internet to put on the channel. That you do this work of transferring and restoring the films themselves, I had no idea. Certainly I am not the only one. It's important that this should be seen as widely as possible.
Many of the people involved and appearing on these old films are gone. The films may be the only existing manifestations of those people and whatever they were doing. When the films are gone, they're gone.
The work you're doing really matters. In many cases you certainly have the only surviving copy of a film. You are literally preserving history. I appreciate what you're doing, and I hope many others can as well.

Yes all the reasons you mention here -- are the reasons we finally made a video like this. It wasn't something we really wanted to do mind you -- anonymity has its positives and we worried that by revealing ourselves we would expose ourselves to a lot of trolling. Well, hasn't happened and in fact the responses have been overwhelmingly positive, and in the last 48 hours we've had a couple of film collections donated to us! And we've corresponded with other people about how they can preserve their family films. As a lover of this era of films, especially the ones that showcase how the USA and other countries promoted their products or travel industry etc, old commercials for the motor industry or aircraft are top of my list, so to be able to access them on TH-cam is an amazing achievement for us viewers and yourselves, loosing them to the ravages of time is unthinkable and you and your staff deserve our thanks, support and appreciation of the feat that you have achieved, many many thanks from across the pond in the United Kingdom. 😀😃😄😁👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇺🇸🇺🇦🇮🇱.
