Thank you for the great videos. I just "adopted" a giant dog that was abandoned on a highway. His poor paws were so tender he couldn't walk on hard surfaces when he came home ☹️ I haven't cared for a dog in several years and your channel has been such a help ❤️

With the cold weather coming on, I made a paw wax for my dog to apply before any damage is done from road salt and lawn chemicals applied in the Fall. It's also great for treating cracks in the paw pads to help them heal faster. It's a mixture of beeswax, coconut oil, calendula oil, and avocado oil. I poured the melted mixture into a tin about the size of my dog's paws so I just have to rub his paw onto the surface to apply the wax. I couldn't find calendula oil so I made it by steeping dried calendula flowers in pure olive oil for 4-6 weeks, then strained it.

Hehe!!! I'm happy I found this useful video while searching how to care for sore paw pads.
You were very informative and also amusing in some parts, mostly very helpful. 😊 I will be pursuing the Lanilan product for sure! I hope I spelled that correctly, lol.
My poor 2 year old Irish Setter hurt his pad and wont use any weight on the one hind leg. This is definitely something I've gone through with him 1 month and a half ago with his front leg.. (paw) and I brought him for all kinds of tests and spent money $$$$ and come to realize this time around.... not even my wonderful veterinarian caught the white, ever so faint abrasions on the paw pad that is once again visible the second time around.
My boy must have rubbed it on some part of the earth while off leash hiking for a second time and it is hardly visible as my veterinarian didn't notice the first time. Dr. SUITER just told me to rest him for 25 days, ( remainder of the month) figuring it was a minor strain or so and did not reccomend x Ray's at the time as all seemed well and no redness or swelling. He is wonderful and the best around as he always amazes me by saving me money and talking common sense to me... meanwhile I was expecting 200 to 300 extra in vet Bill's.
I feel like I diagnosed my dogs injury on my own and makes sense as it has occurred 2 times.
I've had to save my dog in a shocking chocking emergency with no experience but pure LOVE like a mother bear!! Haha!!
Looking forward to my subscription here :) thanks for the fun educating video!

One of my persians suffers from cracked paw pads, probably from contact with his litter and from playing on tile floors.(I'm guessing) No matter how often I clean them, they still get dried out and cracked. His brother doesn't as bad though. I was lucky enough to find a lip balm stick in my local health food store that was made with lanolin, vitamin e oil, beeswax and olive oil and a few other safe oils!(not essential oils)What a lucky find! It softened Giorgio's poor pads in about two applications! $2.64 for this stick! His blue kitty toe beans are sooo soft and shiny now. What a bargain and a great, safe remedy! You can find these things if you take the time to look. 😉I was about to buy a small bottle of pure lanolin which would've been just fine or a small bottle of vitamin e oil(either one would've perfect, but probably a little messy to apply to a persians fluffy paws,I do keep them trimmed though)but I saw this right next to them in the natural cosmetic/ safe oils section of the store. This is a privately owned business I've been going to for years but I'm pretty sure you can find this in most health food/vitamin stores. Also his nose leather can get a bit dry sometimes as well. Plain Saline drops help(the ones used for infants) and also plain burt's bees honey balm, just a wee dab on the nose gently massaged in does the trick. Make sure kitty isn't sick first, of course. Thanks Dr. Andrew, I was at my wits end trying to find something to help his paw pads that was safe for him to lick.(Can't always just drop in at vet's office for these little things, though he'll call me if I want him to but I try to figure these things out on my own after all these years. Sometimes you just get flubbed!>Sometimes when our pets are in a dilemma, we get in one too and cannot think clearly!(at least I do)Just being able to have your library of endless information at my fingertips is invaluable. I've actually been with my own alternative medicine vet for nearly 38 years now. He could be getting ready to retire I imagine soon🤔 but I don't like to think about it and we don't talk about it either and I don't think he's really making plans to, he absolutely loves what he does and has a true hunger to keep learning more. I'm one of his oldest clients/ patients. He's sooo busy. I remember when he first started with accupuncture, etc and then just went for it all after that!It scares me that he will leave one day. There's no one else like him anywhere near here. That's why I'm sooo glad I found you. That's why I talk to you and bounce stuff off of you and just read and read your stuff. No one vet knows everything, so it's good to have more even knowledge at our disposal!I feel extremely safe and know my cats are safe here. You're the next generation carrying that torch! Told him all about you!🤗Don't know what we'd do without you taking a stand for us and our pets! 👨‍⚕️Thank you sooo much for your honesty and dedication Dr. Jones! - wanda,Simon and Giorgio Jones 😊❤🐾🐈🐈( pee.ess.I've had never had one(cat) with cracked paw pads before! First time for everything. 🤦‍♀️)

    Healing Balm Recipe:
    natural beeswax - from a bee-keeper
    organic hemp oil
    natural lanolin -very thick.
    organic coconut oil
In a small saucepan - melt bees wax. Remove melted wax from heat. It cools and solidifies fast so have your jar ready. Be sure the jar has been heated with hot water to avoid cracking. Wax is hot!
Add the oils and lanolin a teaspoon at a time to the wax and stir quickly to avoid lumps; keeping the jar heated also helps with this. It took me a few attempts at this to get it right. Make small amounts and play around with it until you get it the way you want. I'm never without a jar - a lifesaver for busy hands and paws alike. I've also used it to seal garden injuries, scratches, even deeper scrapes, all with little to no scaring.

I love your videos! I made a rub for my dog that has itchy paws tonight. I was looking at videos while it cools and saw this one. I used coconut oil, a little avocado oil, vitamin e and cbd. Then I infused it with chamomile tea (I think... lol. I assume that putting tea bags in warm oil will infuse it). I might get some lanolin and maybe some shea butter to add later. I will be testing what I have once it cools. Thanks for all your info!

My old dog had some serious splits over the years buy they were cuts due to sharp items on the beach etc and luckily they healed really fast especially with a drop of superglue. My new dog is always cutting his pads. It's a nightmare and one of the splits is over a year old. No autoimmune disease but it's crazy bad. They don't bleed or slow him down but they flare up in the summer months. He runs almost exclusively on grass and I apply mushers balm daily. In fact I weekly will apply a giant dose of mushers and wrap in cling film so the lions share of the balm has time to soak in.

My part dachshund after putting this on her pads try to walk away on the linoleum and her front foot slipped out from under her as I told her to be careful LOL. She has a really short legs and she cannot turn her paw up side down to lick it oh, I don't know if this is because of her shoulder and back stenosis but I think it's cuz her legs are too short. I also put it on my hands as I was getting cracks on the sides of my fingers, this works perfect. Hope everyone is fine not sure if you'll get this message because this video is not recent. Thank you for all your great advice! Do you have any advice for overgrown pads. My dogs nails are kept short, but he is older and the back of his pads have grown out long and snag on bedding because he tends to walk more on his toe pads. I can't find any information how to help him with this problem. The back of his pads look like long spikes. Any advice in this matter would be humbly appreciated.

Hi, not very common and may be similar to people getting calluses. Topical options to try..vaseline, Vitamin E, Lanolin. Veterinary wise I would be wondering about removing the 'spikes' with surgery. Perhaps even a local anesthetic. Talk to your vet

I knew Coconut oil would come up in this it's brilliant for getting rid off dry flakey skin and black skin infections I also use a horse cut infection spray for any nick or cuts its called purple spray and is the best thing to use for cuts in my opinion really speed's up the healing process this guy is one of my go to channels he's always been right and think it's awesome that he is helping people to learn how to look after your animals without having to spend a load of money on anti biotics and creams that I don't think will work as good as the natural stuff but obviously there are times when your dog will need antibiotics but it's not always the way doctors are the same just give you tablets all the time 🙄 respect to you sir 👊 your not like the majority of vetinary practicioners who care more about money so would never tell you these natural remedies 😉👍

HI Dr..thank u so much for your videos. I have 2 questions for u! After you rub these things into the footpads, wont the doggies lick it right off? Shouldn't we wrap their feet or put socks on them after applying any of these things to their paw pads? and...2nd question...is if safe and/or beneficial for me to give an 18 lb dog CBD Oil, who has Hemolytic Anemia and is being treated with 6 mos of Prednisone, Atopica (and Doxyclcene for a few weeks) ? Wil there be any problems, or negative side effects of CBD oil going against his current treatment for Hemolytic Anemia with those drugs I listed? Thank u!!!

    • @VeterinarySecrets

      1. Yes often best to then wrap the pads. 2. CBD should be fine, but I would be very cautious while on other meds..personally I would suggest finishing them, or at least having the AIHA under control. Talk to your vets about it.

Doctor, do you think putting treatments on the paw pads would cause a system overload and cause heavy panting? Elderly sweetie with hyperkeratosis trimmed pads-treated with bag balm-panting 5 minutes after. Emu oil-panting 5 minutes after. Wrapped in a breathable plastic bag attached lightly with a velcro strap. jojoba oil application-no reaction. Coconut oil-no reaction. Is this a coincidence maybe or have you ever heard of a dog reacting negatively to an oil application to their paws?

My dog jumped off the couch and her two front feet slipped on the hardwood floor and she did the equivalent of the splits . Now , every time she tries to walk on the hardwood floors , her paws slip and slide . Her paw pads are nice and soft . They're not dried out at all . What do you recommend to give her more traction? Would a natural wax help( bees wax) ? Would the CBD Oil or Shea Butter make her paws more slippery ? She won't wear things like socks for traction . I have trouble keeping rugs in the house because she pees on them . She's 9 years old . I feel so bad for her . She's getting scared to walk on the floors . I have all hard floors and zero carpet. Thanks for the video 😊

@@VeterinarySecrets Hi! Thanks for getting back to me. I'm based in UK... I was thinking of it for my dogs paw... he has a long term problem with a patch of skin. And you mentioned that this one had coconut in it, which is why I was curious it might be a good one for him... I just watched your latest video on your own Ultimate CBD oil, and noted that you use Hemp oil not coconut. Could that be used topically on a dog paw too? (I understand the logic behind the coconut on skin).
If I got your cbd oil, I was thinking of it more for my dogs upper respiratory problem (possibly a trachael problem or damage) it's not been properly diagnosed as my dog has awful breathing attacks when in the car, so we can't take him to the vets anymore, they have to make house calls. And when we have got him there in the past, he's in such a distressed state our vet is against putting him under to give him an endoscopy or xray to determine what it could be because he's coming up to 13! The trouble is they dont see him how he actually is, he's full of life, strong - and like a pup here at home! It's just when he gets excited in the car excessively panting and then his breathing starts to turn nasty, there's this horrendous croaking sound mixed in with the panting and he's struggling to breath. It's heart breaking to see him like that. He's got so much more living to do, I want to be able to take him in the car so he can go for walks and down the beach, like we use too... but I can't take him anywhere because of this mysterious problem... I've been keeping on top of this inflammation he clearly has going on - there was a bad cough the first time this attack happened this time last year - with Throat Gold, Homeopet, KC defense, Vibactra Plus and they've all been very good, helping him the past year.. but even so, when the mobile dog groomer came here a couple of months back the heavy panting started to turn into this sinister croak again!? So I immediately took him out of the bath tub as I get very scared by these episodes... I wish I knew what was going on... Any advice gratefully received 🐾.

I have a black lab mix with wolf. At a puppy at 7 weeks I adopted him from an abusive home so he suffer PTSD. He was full of worms. I had him dewormed. But at 3 months he started shacking, had stiff muscles, hard paw that started to crack and stop eating. I had to hand feed him for months before he started eating on his own. He eat Alpo and table food. What I eat, Jcob eat too. I had him vaccine and started rubbing his muscles and putting aloe vara on his paws. It worked. But he grew from10 lbs at 7 weks to over 70 lbs by 3 months old. Now Jacob is 12 years old and seem to have trouble walking as if he were drunk. He doesn't seem to e in pain but I like to know if it is late signs of HARD PAW DISEASE and how do I treat him.

My puppy paw pad turned brown black orangy couler,,got infected ,I didn't take the vet , because I thought it was poo ,that had gone hard ,I tried to get it to go soft and couldn't ,to cut a long story short I couldn't get this browny black stuff off ,that was hard , couldn't get it to go soft it whent a bit lighter in couler I soaked in salt water,in the end I brought some ,spray because it was swollen and infected so I ordered LEUCILLIN antiseptic skincare spray used for two weeks and the black part has fell off ,now leaving her with a middle nail pad and a back nail pad but the two side ones have gone ,so my puppy looks like she has a deformed foot ,but on the plus side it has healed and no more infection ,I'm hoping her two toas grow back .hmmm just to shed a bit more light on what happened to her paw it whent crusty, and rock hard , impossible to make soft I'm sure someone will know what it was I'm guessing a kind of fungus yeast or something ,but it was no joke .I hope her toas will grow back as she only has a back pad and one toa this is her back foot .if anyone can shed any light on what she may have had I'd be very grateful ,also her tail dropped off only the very top the same thing again it looked a bit black well brown so I thought it was a bit of poo ,I wiped it and it just dropped of very strange but she is very well and happy and feeding in spite of all this ,she is the only puppy that survived as the others were born dead ,ahe is now 3 weeks old and iv been bottle feeding her ,she may be blind in one eye two long story ,but I got rid of the infection with saltwater ,and now I'm using Teramicin ,but I think it maybe to lait not sure .
