That Sheildaig has been my go to for about 6 months when I didnt want to drop the bills on Ardbeg. Pretty sure it's $17.99 here in California. An absolute steal, and glad I'm not the only one who appreciates it. Would love to see you review some of their other releases.

As a Total Wine employee, the Shieldaig line of scotch is specifically meant to be a slightly more budget product line while still retaining the main basic profiles and flavors of scotch. The Spirits Direct products all follow the same idea of having the main flavor profiles of the specific spirits but keeping the prices as low as possible.

    Story for you MBs.
I've been watching these vids for probably a year now. My collection is up to 15 or so. Favorites being Ardbeg 10 and Balvenie double wood. Anyways, over all these episodes I kept hearing Daniel mention two tasting notes that intrigued me. Banana and Coconut. I've never had either in anything I've tried. I've recently received a bonus at work and decided what else would I buy but glorious whisky. Not being able to pin pick a whisky with a banana note, I went for the Green Spot. Daniel always seems to be really excited about the coconut he gets from that. I pick up the bottle at the store, excited to get home and finally taste this highly recommend whisky. I rush inside and go straight for the Glencairn. Pour a generous pour and sit in my throne. After a short glance at the color I go in for the nose. I proclaim "What the actual F###" I am overwhelmed by a huge blast of coconut. Oh S#it did Daniel nail this one. It's so overwhelming I still smell it 10 seconds after putting the glass down. I go in for the taste and the coconut is still there just not as strong. "Wow this is amazing" I think to myself, how is this possible? My girlfriend was busy with something in the other room and comes out to see whats going on. I proclaim this is the strongest smelling whisky I've ever had. Come to find out, unknown to me she had sprayed a coconut fabreze a few minutes before I came home. Lol. I guess I was too excited for the whisky to have noticed. Needless to say I look forward to trying this again soon. Hope I didn't ruin my expectations.
    Cheers.
    Banana notes?

I really enjoy single malt Scotch whisky mainly the Highland variety and besides smoke I taste in some of the more popular blends I’ve never really had a true Islay single malt. I picked up the Shieldaig at TB&W for $20 recently and I have to say it was quite an experience. The smoke, brine and medicinal aroma and flavor was for me not pleasant, I’m slowly warming up to it but at some point I would like to try the Ardbeg 10 to really indulge in this region. I’m wondering if I’m not quite digging this stuff is it a waste for me to drop $60 on real bottle of Islay? 🥃

Ardberg is Canadian newfoundland "scotch" made only with the purest of iceberg water harvested directly from the frigid waters of the North Atlantic of the Labrador coast. If you MUST add ice to it, it should always be frozen sea ice so as to enhance the subtle flavours of seal & polar bear skin flakes.

Rex makes a good point about waiters misunderstanding Scotch names. I was recently at a bar in Manhattan; passing by the bar on my way to a table, I noticed a Kilchoman among the Scotches. When the waiter came I ordered the Kilchoman (Kill-ho-man). Five minutes later, the waiter reappeared with the drink menu. Pointing to a gin-based cocktail, he said, "Is this what you wanted?" I'm glad he asked. He apologized profusely, saying, "I haven't had anyone order it yet."

I saw somewhere it was pronounced Shel-chik with a light k on the end, kinda like Ledaig is Leh-chik.
Anyways, I just bought this here in 2024 and now it's regularly sold at $30 but was on sale at my local TW&M for 25. Either way, I had low expectations but was a bit surprised as I had a similar revelation that it seemed like a younger watered down Ardbeg, possibly Wee Beastie. I need to see how it does against the Hunter Laing's Scarabus Islay single malt, as I highly enjoy that one as a budget option although it's a bit more pricey at around $35-40.

While everyone's jostling you guys, I'm gonna tell you what I think about this Islay brand. If you love the tastes of band-aids and iodine, then go for it. In a Glencairn glass, I couldn't pick out anything subtle at all. The taste was so medicinal, I almost spit it out right away. These guy's also make a Highland version and a Speyside as well. Haven't tried them yet, but I'll watch and look to see if you guy's cover them. I'm thinking about adding a smidgen of this to some plain Famous Grouse. Might make it taste like the Smokey Black Grouse which i like a lot?

Ardburg is the German town that Islay is twinned with. In 1243 st Ellen came over and introduced whisky to the locals. They didn’t like her so burnt her and that’s why islay whisky is smoky. We learned this in school in Scotland.

Shieldaig is a Total Wine release, so the PLCB here wouldn't carry it. I don't know how close to border states you are, but I'm in Philadelphia so I looked up the Total Wine in Cherry Hill NJ. The regular Shieldaig Islay is indeed $19.99 there, and the 14yr is $59.99 (bonus, there's a Shieldaig peated Highland as well, also in the 20 buck range)

The Shieldaig Islay is pretty good. 15-17 bu ks here in AZ. Even though I'm an Islay fan, honestly the Highland single malt it where it's at. Usually a buck or two cheaper and I'd swear its Jura or Highland Park. Better than HP Magnus for sure.

Ardberg is a boutique craft distillery owned by the viking pirates Uhtred and Asgeir. They founded the distillery upon discovering the iceberg that sunk the titanic. In the moment yelling out: "Arrrrr there be a berg" they landed on the name "Ardberg". They decided to get revenge on that bitch and have chipped away at that glacial murderer, using its ice to distill their whisky since inception.

And let it be told, the legend of the Ahrdbehrg...... In 1877, in a small town in southern Alabehrma, a child was born. Steven Ehrdbert. When the boy turned 18, he decided to change his name to "Steven with a 'Ph' '", he told his parents. Thus, Phteven Ehrdbert set out with his new name, on a quest to find purpose in life. He ventured all the way up to the foothills of the mountains in Nehw Hehrmpshuure. There, he met his future wife, Mitsy Duhrdalurdaberhhg. She was from a farming family, and always reminisced of her father drinking whiskey whenever possible, and yelling at the chickens with his shirt off. This story intrigued Phteven, and he decided to start a distillery, produce a whiskey that everyone in town would drink uncontrollably, in an effort to let his lovely wife re-live her childhood once more. Phteven bought an old farm, crafted his equipment by hand, and after 7 years of work, with lackluster results, managed to produce a SINGLE barrel of single malt whiskey. Then, tragedy struck. The ramshackle barn-distillery was struck by lightning, and burned to the ground. The only thing that survived was the lone whiskey barrel. Phteven and Mitsy cherished that barrel, and put it in the basement of their small home for safe keeping. Years passed, and soon the barrel was forgotten. Until one day, Phteven's 6 year old grandson, Ahrthuur, discovered it, and rushed to ask Grandpa Phteven what was in the barrel. Phteven jumped to his feet, ran down stairs, and was crushed to see that his lone barrel of whiskey, was nearly empty. "AHRD-BEHRG!!!" Phteven shouted, thus naming his creation. He carefully emptied the barrel into one single, dusty old bottle. He brought it upstairs to share with his elderly wife, Mitsy. Upon remembering the whiskey, Mitsy grabbed the bottle, and proceeded to drink the entire thing. "YOU DRANHK MAHH AHRDBEHRG!!!", Phteven shouted, hanging his head in disbelief. And so, the Ahrdbehrg was lost forever, never to be tasted again. Some have tried to replicate it, by building a half-ass distillery, setting it on fire, and letting the barrels rot away in their basement, but all have failed....

Pirates of the 1800s found that in many Caribbean islands locals would drink a mysterious brown liquid that smelled of ash but tasted of heaven. That's a RARE whiskey that bartender is talking about, he SHOULD be excited to tell his customers about the South African Whiskey they got their hands on! The Aaardvark, by the way, should be the next Whiskey Spirit Animal. Just sayin'! 😜

Daniel’s jeans; please...... please tell me you at least wear boxers.
Otherwise, I feel it will be a re-creation of the pie eating contest from Stand By Me.

Ardbürrg is the whiskey brand started by Mack and Dennis...Even if I can’t pronounce an item on a menu I pronounce it to the best of my ability so confidently that even if I am pronouncing it incorrectly the staff will second guess themselves even if they know the correct pronunciation.
