In US news and political news, members of Congress questioned 7 CEOs from big banks in Washington, D.C. last week. With money in politics, dark money, and Super PACs on eveyrone's mind, Congress pressed the banking leaders on many issues. Among those representing the big banks and Wall Street was JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon. Rising star in the House of Representatives for the Democratic party Katie Porter pushed Jamie Dimon the issue of a livable wage and minimum wage. Porter detailed the budgetary math of one of Dimon's employees on his bank's minimum wage by explaining this worker's wages and then budgetting all of their expenses.

@@lokeshn8850 Because that's the average cost of a 1 bedroom apartment in Irvine. She could live 3 hours away and commute the 6 hours/day ... and save $200/month in rent. But she would blow that easily in additional transportation costs. Moreover, what happens to her kid during those six hours?
Oh, and by the way jackass, even if this woman took the $567 shortfall out of the rent, she would only have $1,033 for rent. Good luck finding ANY place in CA for that rent. Sure, they could live under a bridge ... but that's, perhaps, not the safest place to raise a child.

Sure he will think about it. He's going to get to the bottom of who this woman who is working for him and have her canned for embarrassing him. He's also the same type of person who has exploited the land speculation racket to artificially raise the cost of rent and owning property in the Southern California. Unfortunately $1600 for a one bedroom in Southern California is slightly below average of $2000. It's practically robbery how these rich people have rigged the real estate and property market in California.

The point is, this job doesn't pay enough, period. And you can't justify that when the CEO is making $31 MILLION dollars per YEAR. Holy cow that's a lot of money. These are the types of people that when they play poker, they lay out $1 Million dollars on the table to bet. Some people work their whole life for a million dollars. I'm not stating an opinion, just felt like many factors weren't addressed in the video and would like to know more.
So what is this company's profit? (As in amount of money left often after all expenses), how many employees work in unlivable wages? Cause if this is a massive firm and has 20,000+ employees with these wages, and they all of a sudden have to pay all those employwes 6,000 dollars more a year for livable wages, would this company still be making any profit? Aka spending 120,000,000 more dollars every single year. Also what level of education or experience requirements are needed for this job? If the experience requirement is nothing, then they are already making leaps and bounds more than other similar low experience jobs such as fast food workers. Also does this company provide options to work overtime, or extend the amount of hours a week to let's say 50 (2 extra hours a day)? As this would provide an additional 640 a month.
The only opinion I wish to state here is that I believe that the amount paid should be equal to both the experience needed to obtain the position and the difficulty/hours a position has, not necessarily 'livable' wage. As if this was the case no one would attempt to go master a craft if you'd make the same amount doing a career that requires no experience and is generally an easier job. Now I don't know any of the specifics of this company's situation nor the employees - but I am not one to blindly believe things without the full story. If anyone is willing to inform me of the specifics off this companies budgeting and whether or not it can both financially sustain all it's employees living in unlovable wages, inform me of whether the employee deserves the increased pay (college education, years of experience in field, difficulty of job, trade school, etc etc.) I will back this 100%.

@JHeints - well she's fictional to illustrate a concept, so I can't really ask her about the specifics since she isn't real. Additionally even if there was a partner to this illustratory person- and widowed women do exist so there's ways a woman could be raising a child alone that wouldn't upset any of your restrictions- she isn't entitled, because this isn't about welfare but instead about a job that requires full hours but still doesn't pay enough to live on. It's not entitlement if you are working for it. Additionally multi room apartments require more financial power to be able to afford rent between roommates and pay the larger initial deposit which many in this sort of situation can't afford. The big question is, why is a company paying their CEO the value of a small city every month while not paying full time employees who keep the company running enough to live off of their wages? Companies not paying workers suitable wages just means those companies are forcing wellfare to subsidize their costs of business, which means this company is being a lazy mooch economically speaking.

Current exchange rate is £1 to $1.38.
      Hourly rate $12.70, I work a 42hr week.
So $27736.80 a year. Tax, pension and student debt is roughly 30% of my income, $19415, $1618 a month.
Rent (my old rent, my mortgage is way lower), $780 (3 bedroom house, lower income area north of the country).
Utilities $250 (includes phone, tv, internet, water, gas, electric, insurance (both life and property), and tax).
Transport $200 (rough estimate, its probably less actually).
Leaves $388 for food, luxuries and clothing.
Food is roughly if I eat well, $250-300 (that's for 2 people)
I don't have childcare costs, but it I was a single parent I would qualify for significant benefits that would cover them entirely and possibly leave some money left over. There would also be income from the childs other parent.
And I earn significantly less than this woman, pay far more tax, have a pension, am fully insured, have full medical cover. Yeah the US seems great.
Oh and if I had a job equivalent as hers with $16/hr (cutting my work week down to 37.5hrs instead as thats the standard in her industry) I would have roughly $590 a month for food and luxuries, and still qualify for the child support benefits. Frankly the US get screwed by insanely high rents. The only places in the UK with similar levels of rent are in London itself, and they are countered by far higher average incomes.

@@konkon4754 I know that this will likely fall on deaf ears but I thought I'd make a slight effort none the less.
The TL;DR: is that even if Patricia the Teller had no taxes to pay she would still be short $69.50 every month.
Patricia's current budget, as shown by Rep Porter, comes up to $2,992 each month, and I think we can both agree that it lacks several very important things. She would have to earn $35,904 each year (2,992 x 12 = 35,904) to actually meet the budget shown. Patricia's yearly earnings of $35,070 before taxes means she'd need another $834 each year to not be in the red.
Arguing whether the government is corrupt or not actually does nothing here. Patricia wouldn't earn enough money even if the government didn't "steal" the $5,970 through taxes each year (and I'd argue that it isn't theft, or at least not wholesale theft, as taxes go to some very important things).
The answer here is not to decrease or remove taxes. The answer here is to give Patricia, and all people in a similar situation, an actually liveable wage. We don't have to be partisan, we don't need to discuss whether taxes should be a thing or not (in my opinion at least a majority of the money paid in taxes goes to some very important things), and we don't even have to get into whether or not the cost of living would increase or decrease for Patricia if people didn't have to pay taxes (I definitely think they would, but as I said, not a thing we need to discuss).
Patricia simply does not have a high enough wage to make ends meet, even if she could get away with paying no taxes at all. And I think we can both agree that she should be able to afford both getting her kid lunch AND to save money each month for the inevitable medical care that they will need, in addition to the budget Rep Porter presented.
Hope that gave you some constructive things to think about and have a good day!

How about people who work full-time jobs get paid enough to afford to keep working that job? If they're all short $567 a month that becomes roughly 3.4 million dollars while the bank should have no problem paying this imagine every company in the country having to sacrifice 10% of their income, the big companies will be fine but the little guys will have a much tougher time.
What we should be asking is why renting a 1 bedroom apartment is aloud to be $1600 a month or a why a diet of Raman noodles costs $400 dollars a month. You can raise the minimum wage all you want companies will just keep adjusting their prices to keep their profit the same. The only thing that changes is now more people live near that poverty line.

She still can't afford to live off of that. I've been in the same position with no kids, no student loans, no car payment, and I live in Florida, and I had $50 every two weeks to live off of. Just me by myself in a one bedroom apt with a college degree working 40 hrs a week. The point is minimum wage is supposed to cover the basic cost of living and it doesn't. I could barely afford the basics making twice as much of minimum wage is in Florida. And I didn't qualify for low income housing because I make too much, and if I did that would be one more person in the welfare system when that benefit should be going to other more people who can't work. My rent goes up $80 a year but my pay only goes up $0.15...do the math. Im losing money the longer I stay at the same company and same apartment. Minimum wage has gone up $1.00 is my state in the past decade.. do you honestly think that is proportionate to the cost of living? Idk why peoplewould be against everyone in this country finally making what they deserve... including themselves. If you think big companies are appropriately budgeting money for everyone's interest and not just the people at the top, you're delusional. They have the funds, they're stealing every bit they can, and people are justifying it (while struggling) instead of fighting for what's right

No, big companies are definitely not budgeting finances accordingly. I met a guy who works at Amazon. He makes just a little over $12 per hour doing package deliveries. He’s been at amazon for 2 years and he’s now a supervisor of the local warehouse. He can barely make a living with his income, but he gets by. A friend of mine from college just graduated and started an entry level job at Amazon. He makes a whopping $75 per hour excluding stocks and compensation bonuses as a software engineer. He parties every weekend, buys expensive clothes, and travels around the world in his spare time.
Of course the companies are going to look for their own interests first and foremost, but that doesn’t mean you cannot make a decent a luxurious income even as a fresh college graduate. However, if you don’t teach yourself valuable skills or do work that is of significant value to the company, don’t be surprised if you can’t afford a high speed internet and have to share your bedroom with someone else. With minimum wage, you CAN make enough to survive and get by, but it’s not going to give you a decent quality of life, and you can’t complain if you don’t bring any valuable skills to the table.

@shooter4hire shooter4hire you are grossly missing the point. Corporations will do everything in their power to take advantage of people that need their job. If you're sitting here telling us that it's not his responsibility to pay the people that make him millions of dollars at the very least a wage that they can live on without going into debt then you are part of the problem. How does it make sense to you that the people that make him all of his money don't deserve to make a fair wage? So you think that because this man wants to line his own pockets as much as possible the majority of ppl that work for him are expected to sacrifice having a family? Buying new clothes? Eating something other than ramen? It is absolutely his responsibility to solve their problems when his refusal to pay a fair wage is what's causing those problems.

These jobs need to be done by someone, not everyone can be a business owner or lawyer or doctor. It is ridiculous to sit and say that the ppl providing you a service that you demand don't deserve to live. So who gets to decide you're worthy? Is it you? Is it the millionaire CEO? Or is it something we all deserve equally? I'll give you a hint, it certainly isn't you who gets to decide.

What this lady does not mention is that there is government assistance for most of the costs listed. I have lived off less and it wasn't fun, but I did it. The stress of not having enough is also a great motivator for improving your skill set and progressing in your career.
While I'm sure banks and other big companies could benefit from caring more about the welfare of their employees, we can't exactly expect low skilled jobs to pay enough to support a family at 40 hours a week.

    • @sohanpereira2984
      @sohanpereira2984 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes we most certainly can! Take into consideration the average CEO makes about 8-10 million a year, while the standard of living at its highest doesn't change after 150k a year (meaning you can afford to live in the best houses, drive the best cars and eat at the best restaurants). So even if said CEO had the skillset of God being able to raise planets from a sneeze, does it make sense that he takes home 850k more than he/she actually needs while his employees can barely pay rent and feed their families in spite of working fulltime job?
The only reason there is government assistance is because companies like these do not pick up the slack in an inflated economy. If not citizens would start dropping like flies or resort to crime to make ends meet thereby inversely affecting the countries GDP. The fact that the government has to step in and set a minimum wage is counterproductive because of the ripple effect it creates and eventually raises prices again. But if they don't, then CEOs like these would still be paying a dollar fifty an hour and employees like you would gladly accept it, turning to the government for assistance

    • @wogeibe
      @wogeibe 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@sohanpereira2984 If the CEO donated his entire salary of 8 million and gave it to all his 60,000 employees, that would amout to a $133.00 per year raise. Also, how are you planning on limiting every CEOs salary to 150k per year? By law? Who wants to live in a society that controls its citizens to such an extent?
What would be the incentive to innovate and take on all the responsibility of running a huge company if you can never make past a certain amount? People are not that altruistic. The rich would just flee to places with better prospects like what has happened in Venezuela.
Companies would not pay 1.50 per hour because nobody would work there for that wage. We already know that because most companies pay above the minimum wage already without any law or regulation requiring them to do so. Wages are based on supply and demand, not minimum wage. Call a plumber and ask him to fix your sewer pipe for 20$ and see what he tells you.
