What?! There are really only a handful of reactions out there to the entirety of This brilliant piece from 1976. I first heard it in 9th grade and it blew me away. But anyway, I initially subscribed because of your Elvis reactions, but I'm really happy that this popped up in my feed and I'm about to watch it right now.
The Rush Catalogue is DEEP... You really can't go wrong with any of their music. I agree that you need to research this song, there is a comic type version that you can watch that will help you tremendously, no need to do a reaction, just watch it on your own. I've been listening to Rush since 1976 and have seen them live several times.. absolutely fantastic. I'm here for your Rush journey... I'm sure the Rush Army will come along for the ride.
The first time I heard this song, I was taken to a kegger in the early eighties where I didn't know anybody. I was a young teen, super shy, and found a spot in the corner of a couch to sit away from everyone. This song started blasting in the house, and for 20 minutes I was lost and actually forgot I was a living breathing human being. It affected me that deeply.
That is one of Rock's amazing pieces. I still get chills hearing those last notes fade after the authoritative voice proclaims "We have assumed control!"
I enjoy watching people( discover something that I have loved for many years. Neil Peart was the GOAT (RIP)😭 GOD has him now😇 Neil wrote all the lyrics for the band. "Listen to my music. Hear what it can do" They were at war with their production people. This is giving them the middle finger. Get in to the story. It's worth it. That was side 1. Side 2 has other very good songs too. There's videos on TH-cam with a serious cool video to go with the song. Enjoy! The band was at war with their record company/publishers because they wanted shorter more radio friendly music. So the band pretty much gave them the finger and said, "We're doing this for us not you." They didn't need to include their fans because they knew we were already onboard. Thus the20+ minute song. The entire side of 2112. The song is about that war between what THEY want and what WE(collectively) want. Workin' Man Manhattan Project Red Sector A Will give you nice places to start😎
Hey man great reaction. 2112 is deep, not for everyone but my takeaway being a fan now for over 40 years has been all three guys were 22 and 23 years old. Think about that... so damn young and recording an epic song with really incredible lyrics that will always be relevant. The Rush catalog is deep, 4 decades of music. I hope you do more. Cheers from Rush's hometown in Toronto 🖐
WDVE in Pittsburgh had a late-night show called For Headphones Only. All trippy and heady music, Moody Blues, Rush and ELP. I remember when I heard this first, on that show, through my AM radio...completely blew my mind, had no idea what would make those sounds, the first time I was really taken somewhere with music. As I age, I realize what it took, in a personal way, to make this record. Completely changes the meaning for me.
This was my music...the first minutes before words... to my synchronized swimming solo in about 1988? Been a long time...State Championship .....I believe the judges were a bit shocked. I placed 2nd. I also believe the lsd was a help.
"At the end of 2112, the message “Attention all planets of the Solar Federation” is heard three times, then “We have assumed control” is heard three times. The first phrase has seven words repeated three times, and seven times three is 21. The second phrase has four words said three times. Four times three is 12, the end of the song and album title. Peace out and RUSH on
Ah 1976. Remember being in the record store, seeing that album cover and had to try it. Knew nothing about Rush, don't believe I'd heard of them before. I can remember thinking it was an appropriate band name. And when is their next album coming out.
Think about just 3 guys writing something so technically and rhythmically complex, putting on tape perfectly, and also performing it in concert. This ain't your average prog rock band.
If you are going into the deep end I suggest The Fountain of Lamneth. Actually Alex and Geddy met when they were 13 in junior high and became fast friends. Neil joined the group in 1974 after John Rutsy was let go due to health issues and a wanting to go into a different musical direction than Alex and Geddy. Cheers
I just subscribed to your page. One, your open mind, 2, you have great patience to sit through album sides and long songs. And 3 you don't always stop the song all the time!!! THANK YOU!!!!
A few seconds before you stopped the video for the first time, Alex Lifeson paid tribute to the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky. Sort of an Easter egg buried in the song.
Some of the best music to listen to and just....drift on the sound waves. I believe this is the first album I ever intentionally listened to while writing.
Been listening to Rush since 74. Thanks for doing 2112. I never get tired of that one. Tough to recommend a Rush song because there are so many good ones. "Big Money" is a favorite of mine.
As yotaman2112 mentioned, this is only half a song without the lyrics. There is a powerful story here. I have listened to this story and poured over the lyrics since it first aired in 1976, and you can't truly appreciate this masterpiece without them. For instance, I always notice the confusion on people's faces when they hear the chapter with the hero learning to play the guitar. They don't understand why the music sounds like crap because they aren't following the story. Also, if you aren't following along you may not catch that the hero kills himself at the end of the song because he believes he will not live to see the Elder Race return to "tear the temples down". This is coupled with the ultimate irony that the reason he killed himself becomes unnecessary and pointless when they return. This is a rock opera, and it should not be enjoyed without the story.
An all time Prog Rock classic!! If you want to introduce someone to Prog Rock (as opposed to "Art Rock", for instance) you can't do much better than 2112! Rush PLANTED THEIR FLAG with that song, no lie!
The messages within their songs lyrics are outstanding. Listen carefully they were wayyy ahead of their time.Research a little and you will understand 😉✌ Awesome reaction 😎🍺🍺
Disappointed this wasn’t the comic style illustrated video with lyrics. Maybe it’s not even around anymore. But that one would have told you the story, no research needed. But you heard Neil on those drums! A wizard.
do a video of you telling your friends and family you listen to this !!! it would be like me telling my parents when they asked me who the heck is this ?? when my mom asked I was into hemisphere's at the time though and well past 2112. can't buy a thrill by steely dan is an awesome debut album to get into bro.
Twenty One Twelve...this is the year in which this story takes place. It is much easier understood with the lyrics, along with the narration portion of the story, which are available on the Rush website...in the discography page. The narration portions aren't sung, they are to be read by the reader so the reader understands what is happening during the story. A little history about this release. They had just put out an album titled Caress Of Steel that did not do very well. Similar to 2112, there was an epic side long piece and a few other longer pieces. It did not do well commercially. The record label told the band they wanted something more radio friendly, 3-4 minute long songs, nothing else. Well, the guys decided they didn't want to conform to something they did not agree with. They figured their career was over and if that's the case they were going to go out with a bang and do it THEIR way. They released 2112 and it was so popular it cemented Rush's place in music history. After that they were allowed to do what they wanted and the fan base grew bigger and stronger year after year. Another great reaction, love that you're getting into Rush! Freewill would be great to do next, all three go wild in the solo section, you'll love it! Thanks!!
I always recommend having the lyrics to Rush songs available, unless you like watching movies on an old black and white TV? :D You are missing out on half the greatness.
Not college friends , the Guitar and Bass player went to high school together , The drummer lyric writer went to a different high school in the Toronto area , What did you think of the lyrics ? The story line ?
I plead with you to do a research on the background to this song. LISTEN to the story and try to learn it’s real meaning coming from the band. Once you learn it’s origins, you will get a better understanding and learn that it’s not just a surface song. Every chapter to this song has meaning. Once you learn it’s true meaning I ask you to listen to it again and you will have a deeper appreciation for it. People can explain it to you, but if you read up on it yourself it will hit you better than just getting a simple explanation.
This whole side is about a man eay back in the day finding a guitar in the forest. Picking it up for the first time, learning yo play and his journey!!!
