A 20 minute hard rock epic about the defiance of authority and tyranny... nothing more iconic

Agreed. Also a work of art.
Even better is that they made this in response to their label saying "hey you guys need to make more songs that are radio-friendly"
And they were like "Pfft how about no"

Honk!
An epic about defiance in the face of totalitarianism. A love letter to all of rock. Arguably one of the greatest songs ever written. RIP, Neil. I still can't believe you're gone, even 4 years later.

Damn right
I agree. I was asked is it really only 3 guys, yes it is. Best concert I've been to.
I don't care what anybody says. This is still the absolute heaviest thing I've ever heard, especially the first six and a half minutes. See, it isn't always about how fast or how loud you play. In fact, it really comes down to attitude. In this case, Rush were angry with how they were being told to be more "radio-friendly" and they said "absolutely not!" and made this masterpiece. The anger shows through, and that's why it's heavy.
Yes.
Perfectly stated!
This is the first album I listened to front to back without skipping a song. This is a true masterpiece.
Privileged to see Rush open their gig with this classic many many years ago and I was literally 15 feet away from Geddy . Memorable
I think that there's a lot of dynamics, very different from heavy metal productions of the same or later times. A lot of subtle notes and softness.
The world has to be saved at the end. The music the protagonist played brought back the elder race and showed them there are still people who care on earth. That’s truly why I believe the ending of the song is the elder race taking control. The world nowadays is so cold and unforgiving that I think Neil would now want this to be a love story of music. How the love of music persisted fascism and brought people back together. THAT is why I will not accept the “bad ending” theory to this song even though it is an equally valid take. God, I love Neil so much. I miss you man.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate Alex's majestic playing here. One of the most underrated guitarist ever.
He's routinely cited as one of the best, no one in this band is under rated
Yeah. Even Neal Schon can play better than that guy. And don't get me started on Eddie Van Halen.
@@spectrumdisorder He said he was underrated not Jimi Hendrix (not that you need to list off all the guitarists that are better than hendrix either)
I think he's overlooked, not underrated.

Discovered Rush by accident long ago. A friend was working on a guy's pickup with an 8 track tape player. He told me to come over and listen to this "shit". It was 2112. We were like "I don't know what this is, but it is amazing". We went to the All the World's a Stage tour concert shortly after. It was insane! I remember they said they were going to play a song off their upcoming album which wasn't released yet. It was Xanadu!!!! We were about 10 feet from the stage. I will never forget how incredible that show was and I have seen them 9 more times live.
That is an epic story!!
I remember being stoned out of my mind and listening to 2112. The 1st Rush album I ever bought. Afterwards I wondered why.
May Neil Peart rest in peace. One of the best drummers ever if not the best.

I don't know why, but I don't think most people have noticed Alex Lifesons use of the wah pedal in this song. He used it heavily to make a lot of white noise during his solo to represent the guitar being smashed into pieces by the priests.
Not going to lie the guy that finds the guitar is a really fast learner, it took me years to learn my first rush song
I still havent gotten that one down.
...And where can I get one of those Lifeson brand guitars! They really stand the test of time!
I learned "Tom Sawyer" in two weeks, granted I skipped the solo and only play it well enough that you can kinda hear that it's "Tom Sawyer".
Plus he coincidentally wrote it himself over of hundred years after it was originally written.

Timeless.
My Dad told me Rush was one of those bands that, while at their height, people either loved them or hated them .. there wasn't really an in between. And i feel the leading reason for that is because of how ahead of their time they were. They were visionaries.
I'll be 36 on Monday. Dad passed in July 2021. I'm so thankful he was so into Rush that me and my siblings couldn't help but become fans.
@@grantmackinnon6449 Absolutely right. I mean, I respect Bonham and all the obvious ones, but in my own personal opinion, there are shite drummers, then bad drummers, then good drummers, then great ones, then fantastic ones, then amazing ones, and THEN there’s Neil Peart.
Who else thinks this story should be a TV show? Like, channel Neils vison....tell the whole story...
Neil Peart was more than just the greatest drummer. He was a poet, lyricist, author, traveler, and philosopher who was kind enough to share his stories with us all.

2112 was written to combat the record company that was trying to control them. The priests are the record company. When you understand their back story it makes this epic album even more brilliant. They would not be controlled. They could not be controlled. Thank you RUSH for standing up to them and giving us what we needed; the beauty of music in its purest form.
I always heard it was about a dream that Alex had and he and Neil wrote the song together because Neil thought it sounded really cool.
The song is a lot of things, a criticism of authoritarianism and control, a tribute, and a big fat middle finger to the record company.
They made a conscious decision that they were going to make music their way, recording contract or not. They all felt that it might be their last album.

I think I was about 12 years old, around 1981, and used to love mooching around in some woodland behind some houses nearby where I grew up. One day there was an old chest of drawers, obviously thrown out into the woods by one of the homeowners. I rifled through the drawers, they were all empty, but in one I found a Philips c90 cassette tape. Curiously, I took it home and played it on my tape player and it was a recording of this album. That was when my life changed and I became a Rush fan. I listened to that tape most nights, through my headphones, in bed, it was mind blowing. Like nothing else I had ever heard.
Thank you Rush, for providing a soundtrack to my life and thank you to the guy who illustrated this, it’s fabulous.
That’s an awesome story. And thanks to the people who dumped that dresser !
I was 13 in 1976, I heard bits of this album from a friends brother and soon spent some hard earned mowing cash and bought the album. Many, many, many nights I sat in a chair next to the stereo in my folks living room at night, all lights off, headphones on, looking out the window at distant slowly blinking red lights from broadcast towers, and played this music as loud as my sanity would allow. I know (knew) every note, every lick, every strike of Neal Peart's sticks to the point of distraction in the real world as I replayed side A in my mind. I did the same with many albums (Kiss-Detroit Rock City, Styx-Equinox, Steve Miller) but 2112 was the leader by far. I ache for that time.
That sound really great, ive just discovered rush and already wanna learn all the songs on bass lol.
I was 18 in 2112
I was the same,, age too, Columbian red bud. Loved em all this time.. YAA oh YAA
Similiar memories, but early 80s discovering Rush, ELP and Yes. And no bong, I wouldnt dare at 13 in the living room, but bet your ass I walked the dog and blazed up before I got set up in the living room.
Me too:( miss the past. This was my favorite album, also, along with "The Song Remains the Same" Love your description of the" blinking red lights" from the broadcast towers.
Rush: the only band I can think of whose relevance and appreciation has remained so strong that a comic is adopted as 2112's music video FORTY YEARS after it was released.
So grateful I witnessed this performed live at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ in 1976, I’m still getting goosebumps today from those memories.
Why hasn’t this story been made into a movie?
Alex Lifeson is so underrated. What an absolute beast on the axe.
+Damien Rogers I think you mean Geddy?
Thanks for proving my point!
David Urrutia Ha ha ha, thanks for proving my point! Alex plays the lead guitar.
+Union Blacksmith actually, Geddy himself said in an interview he doesnt think slapping reflects his style and chooses not to slap. Same with Picking. He uses his fingernail to get that fat, full tone we all know and love.
@@davidurrutia7495 lmao you proved his point....... Thanks for the laugh dude
WE ARE THE PRIESTS OF THE TEMPLES OF SYRINX!
ALL THE GIFTS OF LIFE ARE HELD WITHIN OUR WALLS
If Rush are the priests, the rest of are the janitors.
I was just praying morning prayers and so tired of all the music that gets played a million times over and I'm depressed, drinking coffee and this song came on
! I've never heard it before it was on loud and someone walking by looked over and I'm in a better mood now and this song was so great. I love Rush but I've never heard this song! They were a super great band.❤
By the way... Rush opened for drum Neil Peart, for three months.
Then KISS played on Paramount ! ;-)
Last time I came this early the solar federation wasn't under control
That's what she said
Most underrated comment in the thread.
DJ Honeypants of course kkkkkkkkkkk
Thats inappropriate, ill allow it.
I love how the ending is still ambiguous enough that you can't tell if the main character succeeded in killing himself and the return of the Elder Race is just his dying dream / afterlife, or if they actually returned right when he was about to.
Jimi the Schmuck I like to think he did kill himself but his death caused the people to rise up against the priests and bring the ancient people back.
They had a lot riding on this album. Obviously, they decided to create one of the greatest opera's ever conceived and brought to fruition. Simply a masterpiece brung to life by some Canadian boys. One of Canada's house bands. Other being the hip and all others.😊
I maintain that this whole album would make an epic rock opera if someone turned it into a stage performance
Imagine in 92 years I imagine this will be getting a resurgence of airplay or whatever it is then. Of course I will not stop listening to Rush until my last breath.
21:12 is military time for 9:12. 9/12 is September 12, Neil Peart's birthday! Cool fact!
Docwho10th Alex lifeson’s birthday is on day before mine
Mind-bending. (I was half-hoping that the song would've been 21:12 long)
Also the day after September 11th. Perhaps an early foreboding of the event that should have happened but didn't? We're a laughing stock now because we didn't show then what an attack on American soil brings, a precedence we set back in WWII. I woulda nuked the bastards, just like in the video!
dethaddr - If that were the case, wouldn’t it make more sense if it was 2111, as opposed to 2112?
Also, look at the time on the Clockwork Angels album - 21:12..
In my mind, this is the epitome of AWESOMENESS!! R.I.P. Neal P.! The world has lost its most amazing percussionist!! We will miss you and it Neal.
Amen.
Every time I go back to listen to this masterpiece, I think of how we're slowly getting closer to the dystopia being described. Yet I retain hope that things will work out.
My life is complete. Thank you, dear, sweet Internet.
RIP Niel Peart. Another rock hero has came to there end. Plz celebrate his life and remember there music that changed a generation
Fumanchu1 5150 you didn’t even spell his name correctly. Some fan you are.
@Gunter Schtubert That's a stupid "new" way of spelling their. It's both wrong and annoying. See this all.over the place 😠 Oh well....
learn to spell Their correctly
Neil, and Rush will live on and continue to share their music thanks to You Tube.
Happy 45th anniversary to one of the greatest progressive rock albums ever made.
Again for the people in the back:
This song is a criticism of authoritarianism in *all* its forms. It is not made to confirm your political bias.
Not to mention that this came out in 1976... I agree, people need to chill these days..
I'm indie so no problem anyways. I'm glad Trump is gone but I still criticize those on the others side like Biden and Cuomo.
@@whenfatkillsfat803 I think it's obvious that both political wings belong to the same vulture
@@kingkoi6542 as Bill Hicks said, "It's the same guy holding both puppets!"
Absolutely! It doesn't matter if it's a right boot or a left boot on your throat, it's still a boot on your throat. People are so quick to think that they are always right and the "other side" is always wrong. This is probably a symptom of people isolating themselves in echo chambers of their own ideas where any challenges to their particular group think is actively lambasted and usually the most vehement are setting the tone.

This motion comic (which is topnotch, BTW) just made me further appreciate the masterpiece that is 2112. Long Live Rush! \m/
Absolutely agreed with you.
Personally, I preferred it more without it. I guess I like music better without or at least with minimal visual accompaniment (in terms of the lyrics, not concerts, music videos, etc.)
Still, you can't deny that it's an awesome video.
I never really cared about the lyrics but now I understand ....every piece of music combines with the lyrics...just great
Daniel De Villa I must agree. I like being 1 out of like 5 kids in my school that like rock and metal.
Turtleturd I wouldn't really call it metal but I think I know what you mean I used to go to a school where I was also one of 5 where this girl named ebby and me would argue over if guns and roses was good with they are but she prefers AC/DC and Metallica I'm not even sher if she knows who rush is but I wish I had stayed at school there to tell her
This is one of the nerdiest things they could have done and it's amazing!!
they were the nerdiest band in the 70, since they were in college, hear some of their fantasy stuff, like Fountain Of Lamneth, The Necromancer and By-Tor And The Snow Dog
Why is this one of the coolest things I've ever seen on the internet?
Because rush
Just cause RUSH
This is exactly what the Western world is living thru now
"Listen to my music
And hear what it can do
There's something here that's as strong as life
I know that it will reach you"
~Neil Peart, the beautiful lyricist & De Slagwerker
I always thought they could make movie based on this story. A rock opera.
stockjonebills same
Totally and there’s enough music by them to fill an entire film not just from this one song/album
Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock actually had this implemented as a crucial story point!
It had a part in the novel ready player one
@Jack Burton Not a ripoff, Peart gave credit to Rand for the influence for 2112.
Whoever animated this, you are a god.
Yeah, it’s fantastic.
Ok I know how this ends. The guy who found the guitar in the cave was named Lerxst, he didn't die. He hid in the cave. Later he found two friends of like mind, Dirk and Pratt (aka "The Professor"). They hung out in the cave and made music together. They got so good and so awesome they had to share it with someone, but they knew that was useless in 2112. The professor built a time machine and they went back in time to 1973. You may have heard of them.....but they went by different names......
Sources I need to read this myself
nice
Anyone catch the images of Alex, Geddy and Neil during the video? Notice how early on when the video talks about the elder race of man left Earth (15:25) that it was young versions of the three, and then at the end they come back as older (20:00)to take back the planet from the Priests of the Temple of Syrinx. Nice trick by the Illustrator/Animator of this video.
Yes! Thanks for pointing out.
Yes, ready to save the future AND the past!
It's oddly happening. I have been hearing the song "Twilight Zone" in my head that last few days. I guess my subconscious pulled it up as it relates to towns being empty with the covid-19 lockdown. That made me want to come to listen to all of the lyrics again with a new way of looking at them, wondering what else they may have "foreseen". First I noticed a Mandella Effect. No one played this album more back in the day, just saying and In Temples of Syrinx its " Father and Son" not common sons. Also, the oracle was a SHE, not he. Anyway, there is a "Galactic Federation" that is a negative ET bloodline posing as good, trying to take over control from another not so good ET bloodline and that is what this whole shut down is about as was the creation of Trumps Space Force. Take note that they even copied the logo symbol from the Federations in Star Trek. They are fighting up there and a lot is happening behind the scenes. They want AI to take over and the vaccine has synthetic DNA , patented voice to skull tech, that with 5G will give total mind control of all humans. The computers in the walls and temples ( our bodies) is 5 and 6 G nanotech. Humans will become good little worker biological slaves run by the AI computer and sold as such and no one will be the wiser. All human creativity will be snuffed out as the right brain will be shut down and inaccessible. AI is the only thing allowed to create music or art and it will suck as if you haven't noticed, it is already putting out much of today's garbage. And, a group called Annonymous as you all know, just called out Bill Gates and his vaccine and they called out Trump in the past. Anonymous has been calling out the whole Federation take over. Look at the album and who wrote the story of 2112. Its says - Annonymous You can't make this shit up. It's happening.

OK, I have been saying that someone needs to animate this piece for 30 years. Thank you.
Rush is the best band in the world and thanks to Neal Peart the man behind the drums and lyrics the man and the band was ahead of the time e are talking about 3 men that touched my RIP Neal and to Rush iam happy the they left a lot of music for he ages
Me: (gets a Rush album)
My religious dad: "why would you get Rush?? They're Satanists! You can tell by the pentagram on the cover!"
Me: "....I can't even begin to count all the ways that's the opposite of right."
Are you me 40 years ago?
Perhaps your Father missed the mark. Not divining alternate spirituality of a Taoist realm, one where powerful music w/messages of consciousness, oneness, unconditional love & hope against the rather dubious history/doctrine of liturgy from Biblical texts.
However one finds their own redemption, their singular salvation, should not matter, so long as one acts in the Greater Good, versus the singular pathos of the ego/self. Peace, Love & Light To all Rush Fans & Neil's Family in this time of mourning ~
@@greyangelpilot The upside - down pentagram was a symbol of some non - physical collective in conflict with the individual and his/her right to exist and be free to think and live. Most of the lyrics and musical ideas originate from writings by Ayn Rand (which was one of the authors that Neil Peart loosely admired and inspired him writing the lyrics) where she surmised that an individual's rights were more important than the existence of the collective, whatever it may be.
