This album is the third of eight albums which are, in my opinion, the greatest compositional output of any band in the history of rock. From "Fly By Night" through "Signals" Rush's musical innovations have never been equaled (even, to some degree, by them). I have loved all of their music over the more than four decades they performed and recorded together, but for me, the earliest eight albums after Neil joined the band were the best of what they created.

I can't see anyone else in the comments mention this but at the end it goes
"Attention all planets of the solar federation" the line is sung/spoken 3 times. There are 7 words in the sentence, said 3 times makes of course 21.
    He then goes
"We have assumed control" 3 times. 4 words said 3 times is 12.
    The ending is 2112!
They were utter masters of their art!

Also, Alex Lifeson plays the most recognizable chord sequence from Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture (set 300 years before the time of Rush's album) four times right at the end of the Overture in 2112, just before the *BOOM*, which is très slick 'cause I bet if you search your ear's memory, a smile will come to your face when you suddenly remember the cannon shots, REAL cannon shots, associated with said chords in Tchaikovsky's masterpiece. Cool, eh? 🤗 🇨🇦

Firstly - awesome that you'd jump right in the deep end of Rush with this album. There's so much to appreciate from the Rush catalog. Their sound has changed over the years and it's one of the reasons they've been such an enduring band. I suggest a handful of songs - Xanadu, Cygnus X-1, Book 1 and 2, The Spirit of Radio and Natural Science, The Camera Eye, Witch Hunt, Subdivisions, and Losing It. They should give you a great foundation from which to explore other aspects of the Rush catalog. I hope this album gives you cause to listen to the band outside of producing reaction videos. They are truly a treasure, and I have felt fortunate to have been along for the ride as a "fan" since the mid-80's.
Regarding 2112 - I'd suggest reading the background on how the lyrics were crafted and the meaning of the song. It adds an entirely greater appreciation for how they created the arrangement - particularly the transition from "Temples of Syrinx" to "Discovery". As well, take a look into how the band was being challenged by its label at the time this album was created, as how much integrity the band showed at a time when their very existence was being challenged by their label because of their musical choices. Artistic integrity is a consistent theme in the lyrical content of their albums, particularly in their earlier work. If you watch their documentary "Time Stand Still" it will give you pretty good insight into the band. Well worth the time, IMHO...
Lastly, I enjoy watching your reaction videos, along with other younger folks who are adventurous to listen to some of these progressive gems on TH-cam. It's great to see younger people appreciate the musicianship and artistry of groups like Rush, Yes and similar progressive bands. It gives us older farts hope.
Maybe music will prevail after all...

This was basically their response to record execs who were threatening to drop them after their third album if they didn't come up with more short "radio-friendly" songs; they decided that if they were going to crash and burn, they may as well do it in grand style, so they came out with this album, whose success gave them the freedom to chart their own musical course. And now, for 30 minutes that will completely blow your mind, I recommend Cygnus X-1, Books 1 and 2.

Saw them 2 times here in Germany and those concerts were unreached. 2112 surely is one of the "Legends" they did.- and there are SOME. In case you wonder how THREE people can have such a rich sound, Geddy Lee sings and plays the bass WHILE sometimes playing keys with his feet, whereas Alex Lifeson sometimes, especially when Geddy plays keyboard and cannot play bass, plays bass pedals while playing guitars, and Neil Peart (R.I.P. Professor!) was one of the best drummers ever and writes the awesome lyrics aswell. Nuff said- Greets from Germany as always- never stop Rush or Babymetal reactions !!! (kidding. Do what you like!)

You mentioned “those chops”in the song. It would,as far as I remember, be the effect of using “Rests” between the notes. Take Care

A Canadian who has never heard of RUSH? :-) The joy on your face during the song was wonderful. Glad you were reading the lyrics, its a great story they are telling. Please put these songs on your RUSH list: Farewell to Kings, La villa Stragiato, Spirit of Radio and Hemispheres. More RUSH please.

Nice genuine reaction!...like how you stop to experience the special moments over again and there were many in this song. I remember when me some buddies got the 8track tape when this came out and loved it like you.
Don't forget side 2 because very good as well. Thanks for this and God bless you young lady.

Yeah, Rush were from Toronto, Canada... they even had an instrumental track 'YYZ' which is the airport code of Toronto.
Voivod is another band from Quebec... French Canadian members... mix of thrash metal w/ prog and abstract music and sci-fi themes... a bit tricky to get into, but brilliant metal band.
Annihilator is also a Canadian metal band from Ottawa, the brainchild of extraordinary guitarist Jeff Waters.
Dream Theater, a US East Coast prog metal band, has a Canadian lead vocalist James LaBrie from their 2nd album til today... James LaBrie also has solo albums to his credits... He and the members of Dream Theater are huge fans of Rush and Yes.

I went to Toronto in 2000. I forgot about the song until after I was back home. I did see Lakeside Park, but didn't get a photo of me outside the building on Moving Pictures.
Other Canadian bands she could react to are Max Webster, April Wine and Saga.

Respect for starting out with their masterpiece. The musicianship, the composition, the story, everything about 2112 (twenty one twelve) is absolute greatness. Neil Peart rightfully gets a lot of attention as one of the greatest drummers of all time, but all three of them are musical greats. Geddy is one of the finest bass players, plays a pretty mean keyboard/synth too, and back then his voice was fantastic and full of soul. Alex is absolutely one of my guitar heroes. Together they were greater than the sum of their parts.
2112 also has a lot of nostalgia for me. 40 something years ago I had this record, and me and my best friend listened to it over and over, until we knew every word, note, drum beat, nuance, and after a while every scratch and skip of the record by heart.
If you're going to do Rush album reactions, A Farewell to Kings (do that one first) and Hemispheres are essential 70s Rush albums. Their self-titled debut is essential for their straight hard rock origins.
    .
In the 80s, I think Permanent Waves is their best album by far. Moving Pictures was very popular and considered by some their pinnacle, but I disagree. It's not bad and has its highlights, but I was personally rather disappointed in that album compared to prior ones (and I was a Rush fanatic back in the day).
After that album, I wasn't paying much attention anymore. They became a very different band, which isn't necessarily bad... it just wasn't "my" Rush anymore.

I was shocked to hear that there is a Canadian who never heard of Rush. I thought they were part of the national pride. The way that America is mom, apple pie and baseball I thought that Canadians beer, hockey and Rush.
You need to listen to more Rush. They are by far the greatest band to ever come out of Canada. They’re one of the greatest rock bands ever, certainly the most talented for sure. Rush is the one band where every musician in the band is considered to be one of the best at their instruments. No other band put on a live show like they did.
I seen them more than 30 times and every show was spectacular and some of the best concerts I have ever seen. To hear the perfection and to see three guys, all playing multiple instruments as a time and never missing a stroke or beat. I’m sorry that young people today will never get to experience them live. They were unbelievable to watch.

Thanks for the reaction...I get a little choked up hearing Neil's rare voice on " All starships of the solar federation, We have assumed control..." The youth of today can't really fathom what it's like to hear this...Since 76, when this came out; many have stood on Rush's shoulders. I was 16 when it came out, and at the time; it just blended in with all the other AMAZING albums produced in the early 70's...YES, GENESIS, KING CRIMSON, ELP, ELO, PINK FLOYD, ALAN PARSONS, GENTLE GIANT, etc etc etc...An EXPLOSION of sound and profundity.

As a lifelong Rush fan, I loved your reaction and if you care to know the backstory to this track here it is. Their album prior to this Caress of Steel (their 3rd album and actually one of my favorites) wasn't selling well and they were getting heat from the record label to play more "radio friendly", shorter length hits like Bad Company were at that time. They even called the Caress of Steel tour the down the tubes tour. Geddy, Alex and Neil said the heck with it and figured if they were going out, they were going out on their terms. This album bought the three immediate and permanent artistic freedom from that point forward due to sales. By the way, if you listen through this again, replace the Priests in the story with their record label and main character with the band's mindset at the time. Hope you will keep enjoying what the Rush rabbit hole provides :)

Rush was my first major musical influence after The Beatles. 2112 was the first I learned to play a song on my guitar by tediously listening and playing by ear. Yes was next and both Geddy and Alex site them as a huge influence.

I just thought of something in examining the Professor’s last name: the first that caught my eye 👁 was ART- artist, artistic expression in both music and lyrical content. Second: PE as in physical education as in the Stamina it takes to play drums and in particular at a EXCEEDINGLY HIGH LEVEL!!! So we can deduce through his last name that we have an ARTIST in every sense of the word and Physical Education in terms of stamina and physicality to play at level that boggles the mind and soothes the Heart! Rest In Peace Professor there will never be another like you!
    Sincerely,
    Gary
